Pitch The distance a propeller travels in onecomplete revolution. Low-pitch props create lessforward travel with each revolution (ideal for bigboats and heavy loads). In contrast, higher-pitchprops produce less low-speed pulling power andmore top-end speed.

Rake The tilt angle of the blades tip towardor away from the gearcase. (Progressive Rakemeans that the blade is curved as well as tilted.)On fast, lightweight boats, a higher-rake propshould hold the bow higher out of the water,producing less contact with the water and morespeed.

Cupping The curved lip on the trailing edgeof a blade, found on many propeller designs.Propellers with cupped blades excel in sharpturns and hold the water better.

Stabilize your gas during winter storage. Use in every other tankful all season long to prevent moistureand minimize formation of gum and varnish deposits. See page 20 for more details.

Prevent carbon, gum and varnish build-up by spraying through throttle body/air inlet at the beginningof the season and routinely every 50 hours on carbureted engines. See page 21 for more details.

Lubricate everything from propeller shafts and hose clamps to throttle and shift cables at thebeginning of and periodically throughout the season. See page 25 for more details.

Most engines require maintenance. However, Evinrude E-TEC engines require nodealer scheduled maintenance for 3 years or 300 hours.

When it comes to maintenance, you might want to handle some tasks yourself,

while trusting others to an Evinrude/Johnson-authorized dealer.

Grease and lube enginecomponents

Inspect electricalconnections and battery

Inspect engine mountingand water intake screen

Lubricate mechanicalsteering and tilt tube

Lubricate throttle andshift linkage

Flush the cooling system

Inspect engine oil andlube levels

Inspect the anti-corrosionanodes

Stabilize fuel with2+4 fuel conditioner

Fog cylinders with storagefogging oil or activate

auto-winterization

Change gearcaselubricant atrecommended intervals

Replace fuel and oilfilters at recommendedintervals

Tighten any componentsthat may have become
