DR. RANDY LOWRYLI P S C OM B UN I V E R S I T Y ’ S 1 7 T H P R E S I D E N T

r. L. Randolph Lowry, founder of

the nationally-recognized Straus

Institute for Dispute Resolution and

professor of law at Pepperdine University in

Malibu, Calif., took office as Lipscomb

University’s 17th president Sept. 26, 2005.

Connecting the university to the

community is a hallmark of Lowry’s presi-

dency. He views the city of Nashville as the

university’s campus and the world as its class-

room. Not long after his arrival on the

Lipscomb campus he proposed a $54 million

plan to dramatically advance Lipscomb's

academic programs and to invest in new

campus facilities. During his tenure a new

College of Pharmacy has been established

creating the first Lipscomb doctorate degree,

seven new graduate programs have been

developed, and four new institutes have been

founded including the Institute for Conflict Management, the Institute for

Law, Justice and Society, the Institute for Sustainable Practice, and the

Institute for Corporate Governance and Integrity.

Under Lowry’s leadership the university embarked on a building

program that included the renovation of several academic and residence

buildings on campus, the building of a music wing and a residence facility,

among other initiatives.

Beyond academics, Lowry is involved in the Nashville community.

He is a member of the Agenda for Nashville's Future, the Downtown

Rotary Club, and the boards of the Alliance for Public Education,

Character Counts and the YMCA. Membership in Partnership 2010 of the

Chamber of Commerce and the United Way have also reflected his service to

Nashville. He was a member of the 2007 class of Leadership Nashville. In

May of 2007, Lowry was selected as one of Nashville’s top 50 Business and

Community Leaders for the Future by “Celebrate

Nashville,” the official publication

for Nashville’s 200 year

anniversary.

Service is an important aspect of life at

Lipscomb. Lowry believes that for service to

be meaningful, however, the university

community must also engage with the city.

Lipscomb is the first university in Nashville

with a service-learning requirement for all of

its undergraduate students providing tens of

thousands of hours of service to more than 75

community organizations. Through the

Institute for Conflict Management, Lowry has

been engaged in initiatives with local school

districts and police departments as well as

other civic organizations.

A graduate of Pepperdine University,

Lowry earned a bachelor’s degree in political

science and a master’s degree in public

administration from the Malibu, California

university. He received the juris doctor degree

from Hamline University, in St. Paul,

Minnesota. In 1986, Lowry joined the law school faculty at Pepperdine

and established a new international academic program in the emerging

field of dispute resolution. In addition to teaching at Pepperdine, Lowry

has worked, literally, around the world. He is an annual visiting faculty

member at Vermont Law School and City University of Hong Kong. He

has also taught at Shantou University, in Beijing, China; Bond University

in Gold Coast, Australia; Hamline University; and the University of

Modena in Modena, Italy. His consulting and training practice has

included work for the legal community in The Netherlands, the introduc-

tion of mediation in India through a grant from the Asian Development

Bank, training for judges in Buenos Aires, Argentina, as well as consulta-

tion with lawyers for Freshfields, an international law firm in Asia.

The Lipscomb Bisons posted their first ever overallwinning record and second winning worksheet in theAtlantic Sun Conference in 2008.

Even though the Bisons won all-time high 10 gamesand also posted program highs in goals scored (41),assists (36) and points (118), coach Charles Morrowdoesn’t expect his team to rest on any laurels.

“It is easy to find contentment and a sense that wehave arrived once we have had that success,” saidMorrow who is beginning hisfifth year with the Bisons. “It isnot only a challenge for thisyear, but it has been a chal-lenge for the last three years. We have done a good job ascoaches in working very hard tofind the right players, but wehave also worked very hard tokeep the players focused ongetting better and not beingcontent with the things wehave accomplished.

“We had a good season lastyear. I don’t want to soundunappreciative of that becausewe have certainly been on theend of some bad seasons. Butwhat was a good season lastyear could have been an unbe-lievable one. I not only realizethat, but the players realize it too. That will provideplenty of motivation.”

In the Atlantic Sun Preseason Poll, the conferencecoaches picked the Bisons to finish third behindJacksonville and Campbell. They received one first placevote.

“With us being picked third, not only is there asense that we have arrived, but in the conference thereis a sense that we are a pretty good team,” saidMorrow. “We have to work harder. We saw this lastyear. Every time we step on the field we are going tobe getting the best of the team we are playing against.

“This year is a huge test. We are not surprisinganybody in the conference this year either. Every yearwe have been here we have done better in the confer-ence than where we were picked in preseason.”

Defender/midfielder T.J. Williams, a second teamAll-Atlantic Sun selection in 2008, is the only starter

from last season not returning. While it would appearthat Morrow is set for the season, he stresses no onehas a safe job.

“Every position is open,” Morrow said. “There is alittle bit of credit for what has been done in the past. But if someone is performing better than you on agiven day, or in a given week, that person is going toplay. We are going to put the best 11 on the field.”

Morrow did admit that it is highly unusual for acollege soccer team to return somany starters from the previousseason.“I would imagine there is no onein the conference that has morestarters returning,” said Morrow.“It is very unheard of to havethat many returning. I think it is agood thing. We have a betteridea of the type of player and thetype of person each one of theseguys is who are coming back. “It’s not easy to do the samething we did last year and go outand have success. If we don’tbuild on what we did last year interms of improvement andbuilding on players playingdifferent roles, and if we don’tgrow, we will not have the sameyear we had last year. That’s a

huge point we talked about with our returning guysduring the spring. And we will continue to harp on itthroughout the year if guys aren’t improving andgetting better, or if they are not broadening in thesense of being able to do more and different things onthe field.”

Several of the contributors from last season aresophomores, including Garret Pettis, a forward who seta program record for goals in a season with 12. Pettisbecame the first Bisons player to be named AtlanticSun Freshman Player of the Year and also earnedberths on both the A-Sun All-Freshman Team and theAll A-Sun Second Team.

“Garret Pettis had an unbelievable season for uslast year,” said Morrow. “He scored some great goalsand did a lot for us. But he would be the first to tell youthat without the cast around him that would neverhave happened.

Preseason

PAGE 13

“We have forwards who sat on the bench last yearwho are better finishers than Garret. You might look atit that Garret has a spot locked up, but I don’t thinkGarret feels that way.”

Morrow has addressed the sophomore year withhim.

“Garret is a team guy,” said Morrow. “He is notsomeone who is going to get caught up in his numbers. As long as we are doing well and progressing he is notgoing to be caught up in trying to duplicate what hehas done.”

Forward Miguel DaSilva, the A-Sun PreseasonPlayer of the Year selection by the conference coaches, has been the centerpiece of the Bisons’ offense. Hescored 10 goals last season, the second highest total inprogram history, and also set a new program record forassists in a season with 11.

“Miguel is so dangerous one vs. one,” said Morrow.“You can’t stop Miguel from getting by you. You mighttake the ball from him, but if he gets isolated during agame then two out of three times he is going to getbehind the defender.

“He is just so good getting to the goal and creatingopportunities. Not only does he create a lot for himself, but he creates a lot for others. He is a pretty goodpasser, but he also draws so much attention tohimself.”

Defensively, senior Kezi Lara, a second team All-Atlantic Sun pick in 2008, has been a leader. He thriveson his ability to stop players one-on-one.

“Kezi is quick and fast and can cover a lot ofground,” said Morrow. “If he gets out of position hecan still recover. He is one of the strongest players onthe field. He carries himself very well and knows howto use his body very well in terms of protecting the ball.

“He takes pride in the fact that one vs. one no oneis going to get by him. Whether he is dribbling ordefending he is a great one vs. one player. A lot oftimes being a good defensive player is just a matter ofcharacter and who you are.”

The Bisons return two goalkeepers from lastseason. Both Patrick Walsh and Brent McGee split timein net as freshmen.

“Toward the end of the season Walsh won thatrole,” said Morrow. “He was injured a little bit in thespring. The thought would be that he would come in asthe No.1 goalkeeper.

“Brent McGee is also a very capable keeper. And

Joey DeRosa, who redshirted last year, was the onlykeeper in the spring to not surrender a goal. Who isgoing to start there is still to be determined and weprefer it to be that way.”

The driving force for the Bisons will be a return tothe Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament. For the pasttwo seasons they have advanced to the semi-finals.They lost to eventual conference tournament championJacksonville in a shootout in 2008.

Morrow’s Bisons are facing their most challengingseason ever including games with both Michigan andMichigan State. The Atlantic Sun Conference gets oneautomatic bid for the NCAA Tournament, but Morrowthinks the conference is ready to have a team earn anat-large bid.

“The last three years the winner of our conferencehas at least gone to the second round,” said Morrow.“This past season Jacksonville was bounced in thesecond round by North Carolina. It was a one-goalgame and North Carolina went to the Final Four.”

“There has to be a sense of continually growing anddeveloping as a team,” said Morrow. “Last year wegave up a total of nine goals in the first half last yearwhich was respectable. We gave up 25 in the secondhalf.

“I feel like if our second halves of games wouldhave been similar we would have been in the NCAATournament and we would have been regionally andnationally ranked. I really feel like we would have hitsome milestones that would have been out of thisworld.”

Page 16: 2009 Lipscomb Men's Soccer Media Guide

PAGE 14

Teams from the Big 10, the Big East andConference USA are early tests for the LipscombBisons soccer teams, but coach Charles Morrowstops short of calling the 2009 fall schedule thetoughest ever for his team.

"I think it is a schedule that is comparable to theones we have played before," said Morrow. "I thinkit is a tough, very competi-tive schedule.

"Our program goalsare to be a regionally andnationally competitiveteam. I think we aregetting there. We haven'tgotten over the hump ofgetting past the semi-finals of the conferencetournament the last twoyears."

The Bisons open the2009 season at home Aug.22 when Louisville, a BigEast team, visits theLipscomb campus for anexhibition game. They willfollow with another homegame Sept. 1 when BerryCollege, an NAIA team, visits.

"We hope the Louisville games will develop intosomething we can have on our schedule on a regularbasis," said Morrow. "We don't have many teamsclose to us to play. After Belmont the closest teamsfor us are Louisville and Alabama-Birmingham."

Three tournaments are on the schedule. TheBisons will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., Sept. 11-13, toplay in the University of Michigan's tournament. They will open against Michigan State, winner ofboth the regular season and tournament champi-onships in the Big 10 last season. They play hostMichigan in the second game. Both Michigan andMichigan State advanced to the NCAA Tournament.Michigan State was a surprise loser in the secondround to Illinois-Chicago. Michigan advanced to the"Sweet 16".

On Sept. 4 and 6 the Bisons make the short tripdown the boulevard to play in Belmont's tourna-

ment. The Bisons will face Marshall from ConferenceUSA and Oral Roberts from The Summit League.

The Bisons will host the Hyatt Place SelectInvitational Sept. 18 and 20. The Bisons will openwith North Carolina-Asheville from the Big South andalso play Alabama A&M. Belmont rounds out thefour-team field.

The Bisons close outthe non-conferenceportion of the schedulewith a visit to FurmanSept. 25 and a stop atWofford Sept. 27.

"Michigan, MichiganState and Louisville areobviously big nameschools in high profileconferences that jumpout at you," said Morrow."But Furman is alwaysgood and is traditionally atop 20 team. AlabamaA&M is one of the moretalented teams in thecountry. That will be atoughchallenge for sure.

Marshall and Oral Roberts are also two programsthat have had success in the past at well.

"I feel good about the out-of-conferenceschedule and how it will prepare us for the confer-ence. We don't get at large bids to the NCAATournament. We believe in playing the best teams toprepare us for the conference tournament. That isthe most important thing."

The Bisons will play their first four games inNashville and six of their first eight.

"We are in Nashville a lot," said Morrow. "I likethe fact we have so many home games. It is nice tostart out at home."

The Atlantic Sun portion of the season opens athome Oct. 1 against Campbell, which announcedThursday it was leaving the A-Sun for the Big Southin 2010-11. The Bisons are seeking their third consec-utive A-Sun Tournament berth under the direction ofMorrow.

The Bisons will also play Mercer (Oct. 3), North Florida(Oct. 16), Jacksonville (Oct. 18) and Belmont (Oct. 22) at homein conference games. The Belmont game is the regular seasonhome finale with the winner receiving the game trophy tokeep for a year.

"I would expect Jacksonville, which won the conferencetournament, to be a favorite team to win it again," saidMorrow. "Campbell will be favored a lot. I would think wewould be in the top three, but we are consistently under-rated. Every year I have been here we have finished higherthan we were predicted to finish. I think our guys feed onbeing an underdog."

Road games in the conference are Oct. 9 at Stetson, Oct.11 at Florida Gulf Coast, Oct. 20 at ETSU and Nov. 1 at USCUpstate to end the regular season.

"I think the A-Sun as a whole has gotten better since I havebeen here," said Morrow. "I definitely think the other coachesin the conference would agree with that. And I think that wehave gotten better in the last four years or so as well."

The Bisons lost to Jacksonville in the tournament semifinalsin Buies Creek, N.C., in a shootout. They lost to Campbell, theregular season champion 4-3 after opening with a 3-0 lead.

"Certainly the margin of difference between the top teamsand us has closed completely," said Morrow. "I think we arewell on our way to being a team that gets regional considera-tion."

The A-Sun Tournament format has changed for the 2009postseason. In the first round the four highest seeds will hostgames to determine the "Final Four" teams.

Conference

ATLANTIC SUN CONFERENCEFor more than 30 years the Atlantic Sun Conference has stood forachievement with integrity in both the academic and athleticarenas with a focus on the balance between the two for itsstudent-athletes. The A-Sun boasts a blend of the most dynamicand prestigious private and public institutions in the region, withall committed to the conference goal of Building Winners for Life.

The experience for a student-athlete in the A-Sun is supported bythe entire university community, from coaches to faculty, and fromthe CEO’s to the athletic and academic support staff.Atlantic Sun student-athletes compete in outstandingfacilities throughout the conference and in some oftop markets in the Southeast. Eight A-Sun schoolscompete in the top 10 media markets within theconference’s five-state footprint. With All-America selections, National All-Academichonorees, teams and individuals qualifyingfor and advancing in NCAA Championship play,Atlantic Sun student-athletes achieve at thehighest levels of collegiate athletics.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS

Continuing a tradition of academic achieve-ment, more than 57 percent of all student-athletes earned All-Academic status duringthe 2008-09 academic year. Fifteen student-athletes earned places on the 2008-09 CoSIDA/ESPN the MagazineAcademic All-District Teams. Belmont led the impressive institu-tional totals in the race for the All-Academic Trophy for theseventh time in eight years with 66.5 percent of its the student-athletes achieving All-Academic status with grade point averagesof a 3.00, or better.

Belmont senior Andy Wicke, Jacksonville senior Jeremy Gillan,Lipscomb junior Kellie Sirus and Campbell senior Karlie Loveearned spots on CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americateams. Lipscomb’s men and women track and field teams and thewomen’s cross country team ranked among the top 10 GPAs inNCAA Division I, in being recognized as All-Academic ScholarTeams from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country CoachesAssociation. The Belmont men’s cross country team posted thefifth-highest GPA, according to the USTFCCCA.

Wicke, one of the Bruins’ most celebrated student-athletes, sharedthe conference’s male Scholar Athlete of the Year award andearned the conference’s Postgraduate Scholarship. Mercer’sChereese Rowe earned the conference’s second PostgraduateScholarship. Wicke earned national acclaim as he became one ofjust two men’s basketball players to receive an educational grantthrough the NCAA postgraduate scholarship program. For hisdedicated academic success and community service, Wicke landedon the Lowe’s All-Senior All-America Second Team and was one of10 finalists for the Lowe’s Senior Class Award.

ATHLETIC SUCCESS

For the second straight season, the A-Sun made early headlines onthe hardwood as Mercer, under new head coach Bob Hoffman, went on the road and defeated Alabama and Auburn within afour-day span, shooting the Bears up to the top spot in the RPI. Atthe General Shale Brick Atlantic Sun Championship, ETSU endedBelmont’s three-year reign, winning its first A-Sun Tournamenttitle and making the NCAA field for the eighth time. During the

Championship, Courtney Pigram became just the second player inleague history to reach the 2000-point plateau. Two players couldreach that mark this season in Mercer’s James Florence andCampbell’s Jonathan Rodriguez. Florence and Campbell begin theseason as the second- and third-highest active scorers in thenation.

During the baseball season, three A-Sun hurlers, Lipscomb’s RexBrothers and Kennesaw State’s duo of Chad Jenkins and Kyle

Heckathorn moved up the draft boards of MajorLeague teams with every dominating performance.Brothers turned in one of the league’s top single-

season strikeout performances; Jenkinsposted a 41-inning scoreless streak andHeckathorn capped his season with a domi-nating 15-strikeout performance againstUNF, earning National Player of the Weekhonors. On draft night, Jenkins became justthe seventh A-Sun player to be a first-round

selection, going to the Blue Jays. In thesupplemental phase of the first round, the Rockies picked Rex Brothers and theBrewers tabbed Heckathorn.

In softball, the conference turned in oneof its finest seasons in history, especially

during the non-conference season. Against out-of-conferenceopposition, A-Sun schools posted a .602 win percentage, the fifth-highest in the nation, trailing only the SEC, Pac-10, ACC and Big 12.Five schools finished with win percentages better than .600 andFGCU and Mercer reached the 40-win mark. The Eagles establisheda league record for win percentage at .839 in posting a 47-9record. For the second-consecutive May, Campbell emerged victo-rious at the A-Sun Championship, led by the dominating perform-ance of MVP Brittany Stanley. She pitched all 31 innings, recordedtwo shutouts and struck out 26 against only two walks.

One of the most dominating athletes in Atlantic Sun history closedout her career in Jacksonville’s Natasha Harvey. She led theDolphins team titles in both Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field fora fourth-straight year and won the inaugural MVP honors at bothmeets as well as the Most Outstanding Field Performer award.During her four years, she won a combined 18 individual events, five Most Outstanding Performer awards, both Most OutstandingFreshman performers in addition to the two MVP honors. Off thetrack, she won the A-Sun’s Female Student-Athlete of the YearAward, was the A-Sun’s nominee for the NCAA Woman of the YearAward and appeared on the U.S. Track & Field and Cross CountryCoaches Association All-Academic team for a fourth-straight year.

The 2009-10 athletic year promises to be an exciting one for theAtlantic Sun as UNF and Kennesaw State earned full Division-Istatus and will be eligible for all postseason tournaments. FGCU’schampion volleyball and baseball programs and USC Upstate’ssoccer and softball programs have also gained access to A-Sun andNCAA postseason play. For the first time in league history, Mercerand it’s University Center will play host to the General Shale BrickMen’s and Women’s Basketball Championships. The BaseballChampionship leaves Florida for the first time in 16 years forNashville, Tenn. and Lipscomb’s Dugan Field. FGCU landed its firstchampionship, and will host volleyball in November. These newadditions and venues make the upcoming year a hotly anticipatedseason for the Atlantic Sun.
