Coach D’Anna has captured four NCAA Division II Regional tournament berths, two conference championships and one NCAA Regional title since taking over the helm of the Lady Railsplitter women’s soccer program in 2003.

Coach Helio D’Anna, or simply Coach “L” (as he is known through-out the soccer world), begins his seventh season as head coach of the LMU women’s soccer program after helping the Lady Railsplit-ters reach the NCAA Tournament three of the past six seasons.

In 2004, the Lady Railsplitters reached the NCAA Tournament after winning the conference. That year, they advanced all the way to the quarter finals of the nationals.

In 2005, they also reached the NCAA Tournament after winning the conference title. In 2007, the Lady Railsplitters reached the the NCAA Tournament advancing to the second round after win-ning both the regular season and tournament title in conference.

Last year, the Lady Railsplitters finished the season with an 11-6-1 record, qualifying for the South Atlantic Tournament as the 5th

seed with a 4-4 record.

A product of São Paulo, Brazil, D’Anna served as head men’s soccer coach for nearby Union Col-lege before coming to the Lincoln Memorial University program. D’Anna guided Union to four Mid-South Conference Championships and was named Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year each of those seasons. Coach D’Anna’s 1999 and 2001 teams earned trips to the NAIA Region XI Champi-onship match, and the 2001 team finished the season ranked No. 3 in the country.

D’Anna majored in physical education at UniCamp-Brazil, and coached and played at different soc-cer clubs in Brazil as well as the American High School of Campinas. His soccer background also includes coaching and instructing at clinics and internships such as São Paulo Club (former back-to-back world champions), Clemson University Soccer Camp, Post-to-Post Soccer, Brazilian Soccer Academy, BRUSA, Brazilian Soccer Training Center and Cincinnati-Brazil Soccer.

D’Anna now possesses an overall winning record of 248-122-25 in his collegiate career as a head coach (178-86-19 with the men and 70-36-6 with the women). Coach D’Anna has been part of the Olympic Development Program as a coach in the state of Kentucky. He and his wife, Debbie, reside in Barbourville, Kentucky.

Assistant CoachPaula FantiniA former women’s soccer star at nearby Union College, Paula Fantini joined the LMU coaching staff in the fall of 2007 after obtaining a double major in Physical Education and Sports Management, minors in Health and General Business. As a student-athlete, Fantini excelled on and off the field. She was a Dean’s list honoree every semester at Union, and was a three-time Aca-demic All-Conference honoree, as well as a two-time All-American Scholar Athlete. She was named All-Conference and All-Region three-times, and

was named All-American twice. She is ranks 3rd in assists, 4th in goals scored, and holds the 4th place in the Union’s individual career records book. The team from her junior year in college will enter the Athletic Hall of Fame – Teams Distinction - at Union College this fall. Fantini has a strong coaching background in both club soccer (FC Alliance) and in college soccer (University of Campinas). “Her resume speaks for itself,” says LMU Head Coach Helio D”Anna. “She was and still is a phenomenal player and has already proven to have tremendous coaching skills. More importantly, she is a person of excellence and that is what we always associate our program with at LMU. We are thrilled to have her on board with our men’s and women’s soccer program.”

Graduate Assistant CoachAdriano de Moraes Although Adriano only played one season with the Railsplitters, his con-tributions were evident in the Railsplitter’s two Appalachian Region titles, their two Elite-8 wins a SAC Tournament title, two trips to the final four, and their 2007 national championship appearance. As a graduate assistant coach, de Moraes brings to the table a great deal of soccer knowledge, quality leadership and a work ethic that is second to none. In addition to being involved with team and individual workouts, de

Moraes also works with the keepers and is pursuing a master’s degree in education.

Graduate Assistant CoachIan RichardsonFollowing a successful playing career at LMU, Ian will begin his first year as graduate assistant coach at his alma mater. A native of North La-narkshire, Scotland, Richardson was a smooth player with a very steady personality on and off the field. Now as a coach, he plans to translate his experiences that built a solid winning tradition for the Railsplitters into a new streak of accomplishments.

Coach Richardson will be involved with all phases of the program includ-ing keeper training. He will pursue a Masters Degree in Education.

The beginning of a season is a very special time. The expectations, excitement, and hopes are so strong you can see it in the players’ eyes. Last year was full of challenges with many injuries and many new players ar-riving to fill big shoes. Although we finished with a very good record and maintained the winning tradition, the players felt that they fell short of the mark.

This season feels like a chance to get it right: the play-ers had a very strong off season, including the spring work outs and games, as well as the summer leagues and conditioning. Without a doubt the players are eager to get going with the pre-season and to achieve what they felt should have happened last year.

This year’s roster is extremely balanced and full of tal-ent. Some players who missed several games last year (as well as the whole season) are back and healthy. Oth-ers who had their first encounter with college soccer now know what this level is all about and are ready to take the challenge. The juniors are poised to lead as much as the seniors. And the incoming class could not be more promising. On paper this could be one of our strongest teams ever assembled.

We will be deep in all positions on the field, with two, three and even four players of quality for every posi-tion. The healthy internal competition will push everyone to give their best daily. The coaching staff will have a good problem to solve several puzzles to find the playing time and make the right personnel choices for every game.

Our schedule could not be any stronger and will give us a chance to contend for an at large spot in nation-als. We will play 14 regional games including all of our always tough conference games, as well as Barton, King, Mount Olive, GA College, Columbus State and Belmont Abbey. Although we will not have an easy day on the pitch, the strong schedule will showcase our talent and depth of the roster.

Our new facilities are a year older which allows us to play more home games. This will be a welcome situ-ation as last year we were forced to play very few home games due to the stadium construction. And an im-portant goal for our staff is to attract bigger crowds for our games. The quality of the team is a great factor, as well as the comfort of the new facilities.

The returning players as well as the incoming ones are well aware of the academic goals as well. We start the year with a 3.0+ GPA and intend to build on it. Achieving the NSCAA Team Academic Award is an important goal to be achieved.

Our coaching staff is in tune and made up of people with great history at LMU. And considering all the excitement and growth that LMU is going through, it’s even more exciting for us to see how far we have come over the years. The team and the staff reflect this transformation and add to the sense that something very special is happening in Harrogate, Tennessee.

All pieces are in place and we just await the first whistle to start writing the exciting new segment of our history.

Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us

we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 112th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering over 30 majors. LMU’s Fall 2008 enrollment was 3,365 students and there were 153 faculty members at the main campus and extended-campus sites. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.

Key Dates in saC History

1930 -– North State Atlantic Conference formed when six schools broke from the North Carolina Intercollegiate Athletic Conference 1961 – Newberry joins league. Conference changes name to Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) 1975 – South Atlantic Conference formed as foot-ball league with eight schools, called the SAC-8. 1988 – Wingate replaces Newberry 1989 – SAC became an all-sports conference 1996 – Newberry rejoins conference 1998 – Tusculum joins conference 2006 – Lincoln Memorial joins conference 2007 – Brevard joins conference

The South Atlantic Conference has experienced and en-joyed over 30 years of athletic tradition and excellence. The conference has enjoyed tremendous success due to dedicated people building a premier athletic conference throughout its history.

The distant forerunner of the South Atlantic Conference was the North State Atlantic Conference (NSIAC). The NSIAC was formed when the “Little Six”, as it was called, broke from the North Carolina Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1930. These charter members included Lenoir-Rhyne College, Atlantic Christian, Catawba Col-lege, Guilford College, Elon College, and High Point University.

The North State continued to grow over the next 30 years, adding Western Carolina (1933), East Carolina (1947) and Pfeiffer (1960). A name change became necessary when the league accepted Newberry as its first South Carolina member in 1961. The league took on the name Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) on May 20th of that year.

The CIAC saw several changes in the following years as East Carolina withdrew from the league in 1962. Appa-lachian State and Western Carolina followed in 1971 and 1976. All three landed in the Southern Conference. The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, N.C. became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker.

The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions.

After the first season of play in the SAC-8, Lenoir-Rhyne College captured the first football title.

In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, all-sports conference.

That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis. Later the conference grew to 14 champion-

ship sports by adding women‘s soccer (1990), men’s and women’s cross country (1993) and women’s golf (1999).

The South Atlantic Conference was composed of the same eight member institutions from 1975 until 1988, when Win-gate University replaced Newberry College as the eighth member institution. Newberry later rejoined the conference in 1996. Tusculum College was admitted as a member of the league in 1998. In 2006, Lincoln Memorial University began play in the conference and Brevard College became a full member in 2007.

Today the conference is a group of nine private, liberal & civic arts colleges and universities, similar in size and athletic philosophy. Since becoming eligible for NCAA Division II postseason play in 1993, the league has sent representatives from all of its sponsored sports to NCAA postseason play.

The league membership now includes Brevard College in Brevard, N.C.; Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn.; Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C.; Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, N.C.; Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn.; Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, N.C.; Newberry College in Newberry, S.C.; Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tenn.; and Wingate University in Wing-ate, N.C.
