T ula Petersons parents knewthe value of an education. Andthe Campbellsville, Ky., hastaken steps to ensure that future genera-tions of Lindsey Wilson College stu-

dents benefit from the value she placeson a college education.Tula has included the college in her

will, which will establish an endowedscholarship. She has also named a

prayer room in the Sumner CampusMinistry Center in honor of her parents, the Rev. R.V. and Anna Belle Matthews.

I just love Lindsey Wilson, Tulatold me. Maybe I got that from mymother and dad because they alwaysloved Lindsey Wilson.

    Tulas parents were from

Breckinridge County, Ky. They weremarried on May 8, 1920, and had ninechildren. Rev. Matthews served in theArmy from 1914-19, making him aWorld War I veteran.

Rev. Matthews began making plansto enter the ministry during theMethodist Churchs conference year of 1922-23. In his ministry he served theShepherdsville, Ky., Circuit of 1925 and26. He was admitted to the oldLouisville Conference in 1927 andappointed to Kirkmansville.

Rev. Matthews continued to serve thechurch faithfully until he was forced togive up his ministry in 1935 because of ill health.

Thanks to V.P. Henry, Rev. Matthewswas admitted to the VeteransAdministration Hospital at Outwood,Ky. His health declined continuouslyuntil his death on Nov. 6, 1939.

Rev. Matthews was familiar withLindsey Wilson because he attended aconference on the campus.

He thought very highly of the col-lege, Tula recalled.

When her mother, Anna Belle, wassearching for a place to raise her ninechildren, she looked at Columbia.

She knew it would be a great oppor-tunity for the children get a college edu-caiton if they moved to a college town,

Tula said.So in the summer of 1940 againwith the wonderful help of V.P. Henry Anna Belle and her nine children wereable to settle in Columbia. She lived inColumbia until her death on Sept. 19,1967 and she saw most of her chil-dren, including Tula, receive an educa-tion from LWC. Four of Tulas siblingsalso attended LWC: Clara, Carroll,Virginia and Richard.

Dr. Henry was sogood to us, Tula said.

Thats why I wantedto do something inmemory of my par-ents. So I named a

    prayer room in their honor.

I also wanted to dosomething to show myappreciation toLindsey Wilson, for everything it hasmeant to my family.

So thats why I set up an endowedscholarship.
