Tip Shanklin has seen LindseyWilson College grow up a lot. Sincearriving at Lindsey Wilson in 1998,Shanklin has seen the size of the col-leges faculty double, enrollment swell

past 2,000 students and the A.P. WhiteCampus to expand to cover more than200 acres.

And now Shanklin is ready to servehis second term as coordinator ofLindsey Wilsons English program. He

previously served as the programs coor-dinator from 2002-04.

Located within the colleges humani-ties and fine arts division, LWCsEnglish program allows students to con-centrate in one of four areas: literature,

journalism, writing and education. AllEnglish majors receive a broad-basededucation, which Shanklin said makesthem particularly attractive to many

prospective employers.A person with an English degree can

do just about any kind of job because ofthe kind of skills they get with anEnglish major writing skills, critical-thinking skills, cultural literacy,Shanklin said. The skills our majors getare applicable across all kinds of

employment fields.I suspect there are a lot of businesses

who would prefer someone with anEnglish degree rather than somethingfocused because they are going to wantto train that person for their business. Ifthat person has multiple skills -- culturalliteracy, writing, critical thinking, read-

ing skills they are going to have a bet-ter chance at being successful in a job.

A native of Hopkinsville, Ky.,Shanklin earned a bachelors degreefrom Burlington (Vt.) College, a mas-ters degree from College of Saint Rose(N.Y.) and a doctorate from Binghamton(N.Y.) University. At LWC, Shanklin isalso an associate professor of English.

Shanklins area of specialty is 19th &20th century British literature, and he

has translated ancient Greek literatureand poetry by 19th-century Frenchauthor Victor Hugo.

Shanklin said he was attracted toLindsey Wilson because of the collegesstrong sense of mission.

What I like about being at LindseyWilson is the commitment that it takes to

be here and the support we get from col-leagues and the administration, he said.
