2009 WOMEN’S SOCCER 3

Cypress had a tough end to their 2008 season coming just short of the State Tournament for the second

season in a row. The Chargers ended their season in a tie losing in penalty kicks in the second round of playoffs against arch-rival Santiago Canyon. This season, Cypress is on a mission to turn things around. Head coaches Randi Martinez and Jill Toda take over the head coaching du-ties and have high expectations for this season’s squad:

Coming off a solid but below expecta-tion 2008 season, the potential for a special 2009 season is very realistic. We are very optimistic that the qual-ity and depth of the thirteen incoming freshmen will compliment the experi-ence and talent of the twelve sopho-mores remaining. Our sophomore leadership is key to the success of this team. Heading the 2009 sophomore class is captain and First Team OEC selection in 2008, Casey Kiehl. Kiehl led the Chargers in points (28) goals (10) and assists (8). Her impact will be felt on and off the field. Fellow captain and First Team OEC selection Nicole Weil returns to a defense that allowed four goals in 22 regular season matches in 2008. Sophomore transfer Amber Lopez brings a wealth of premier level expe-rience to a midfield that could use the offensive creativity after only scoring 49 regular season goals in 2008 (a pro-gram low). In addition to the sophomore class, the Chargers add a thirteen player freshmen class that has depth and tal-ent.

Freshman Vanessa Corona was among CIF leaders scoring 49 goals in 2008 and 64 goals in 2009. This will give the team a dangerous weapon in front of goal. Hina Lilii, a club teammate of Co-rona, is a physical defender that really impacts a game. Lilii’s ability to defend anywhere on the field is a great option to have. ChristiAna Lang fills a hole in the center back position. Lang, a natural born leader, has the organizational skills to position this talented 2009 Charger squad to a championship lev-el. Four of the five coaches from 2008 return to this season’s staff so the same approach will be taken. The one addi-tion is goalkeeper coach Chris Gomez who brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this already talented staff.

With the shortened season, Cypress will play just five pre-conference games starting with a road and home game each before three road games in Northern Cali-fornia. The Chargers will then turn to con-ference play where they will defend their 2008 championship against one of the most competitive conference teams yet. The marquee rivalry games against the Hawks will take place on October 9th and November 10th where Cypress hopes to avenge their second round playoff loss from last year. The balanced 2009 Charger team will look to improve on last year’s season, con-tend for a state championship, and live up to the history of success Cypress Women’s Soccer is known for.

“We are very optimistic that the quality and depth of the thirteen incoming freshmen will compliment the experience and talent of the twelve sophomores remaining.”

Season Review

Though the Chargers had another successful year in 2008 including and Orange Empire Conference Cham-

pionship, Cypress failed to reach the standards they had set for themselves. For the second season in a row, Cypress fell in the second round thanks to penalty kicks. The team was denied a trip to the State Tournament where they had been every year between 1994 and 2006. The 2008 Chargers exceeded their tie record from 2007 with five and a total record of 18-1-5. The season started well with four straight wins before hitting a road bump with two straight ties to San Bernar-dino Valley and then Santa Barbara. Cypress stumbled again in conference losing to Fullerton for the first time in program history and then tying Riverside. Cypress battled to a 0-0 tie against Santiago Canyon in the first round and then won seven straight before the dramatic face-off with the Hawks to end conference. With the conference cham-pionship on the line, Cypress came through with a 1-0 win with a share of the conference title. Cypress shut out Santa Monica in the first round of playoffs setting themselves up for another dramatic match-up against Santiago Canyon. After a 90 minute draw with no goals scored, it came down to penalty kicks. The Char-gers failed to convert ending their season and strengthen-ing their rivalry with the Hawks.

Ray Haas, the highly successful archi-tect of the Cypress College Women’s Soccer program, passed away June 4,

2004 at the age of 62. In his 12 years lead-ing the Chargers, Haas directed Cypress to one national title, two California State Championships, and two State Runner-up Finishes. The college also made five state semi-final appearances. His squads won 10 Orange Empire Conference crowns and compiled an un-

beaten streak of 106 games in OEC action. Haas, a three-time CCA Coach of the Year posted a record of 248-16-21. He was fea-tured in Sports Illustrated’s Faces in the Crowd on January 17, 2000. Haas worked as diligently to help his players receive scholarships as he did in any other facet of his coaching routine. He proudly pointed out that more than 75 percent of his ath-letes played on scholarships at four-year colleges or universities.

Cypress Community College boasts a well round- ed physical education curriculum along with a successful sports program featuring 13 intercol-legiate teams and a strong support staff of profes- sionals. The school also

has a wheelchair basketball program. Student-athletes are provided quality individual in- struction, the chance to develop to their full potential and the opportunity to earn a four-year college or university scholarship. Cypress, which offers seven sports for women and six for men, has had a solid line-up of teams and individual athletes who have ex- celled since the college first opened its doors in 1966. In recent years, the baseball, softball, women’s soc-cer and women’s basketball programs have taken center stage. In 1997 the baseball and softball squads, coached by brothers Scott and Brad Pickler, cap- tured state championships. The baseball crown was the third of the 1990s under the direction of Scott Pickler who has over 700 wins in his 22 years at the school and captured the state championship again in 2003. Trevor Hoffman of the San Diego Padres, who played at Cypress in 1986 and 1987, is a four-time Major League all-star and holds the MajorLeague record for career saves. Brad Pickler, in his 19 campaigns, has also had a great deal of success. He has led the softball team to five state titles while winning over 800 games. The Chargers were the first California school to capture three consecu-tive state championships (1997, 1998, 1999). Cypress only started playing intercollegiate women’s soccer in 1991, but the late Ray Haas quickly built the program into a consistent winner. The Chargers won State Championships in 1998, 1999 and 2004. Cypress’ 27-0 season in 1999 was rewarded with a No. 1 national ranking by the National Soccer Coaches As-

sociation of America. Cypress captured its first women’s basketball

championship in 2005. Margaret Mohr’s team set a school record with 28 wins against five defeats.

Cypress enjoys strong support from the com-munity and student body, who are part of the traditionally pop- ular athletic program.
