fischer FIRE STOP systems
In early 2007 fischerwerke launched a newproduct range for passive fire protection. The fischer FIRE STOP products offercomprehensive fire protection solutions forbuilding service installations, therebycomplementing the SaMontec and fixingsystem product lines. As a full-rangesupplier, fischer now offers a completeproduct assortment with fire approvals.

9FIRE STOP
Construction facilities rely on building ser-vice systems with the associated piping, ductwork and cable ways for their properperformance. The service distribution sys-tems require a host of wall and floor pene-trations, ideally through suitably designedopenings. Fire-rated walls and floors mustbe resealed to ensure the integrity of thefire barrier or compartment. Fire stop sys-tems, whose purpose is to provide an effec-tive barrier to the spread of fire, represent agood-practice solution to these require-ments. As a passive fire precaution, theyreduce or minimise the hazards posed byfire and smoke by ensuring local fire con-tainment.
Fire stop systems for building service elementsThe installations required for the distribu-tion of services within buildings include thepiping, ductwork, conduits and cable ways
of the power, heating, sanitary, refrigera-tion, ventilation and air-conditioning sys-tems. The building services elements maybe broken down into cable, pipework and
ventilation components. This division is re-flected by the statutory building controlframework and the common guidelinesadopted by all 16 German federal states, specifically the Pipe and Cable InstallationDirective (LAR) and the Ventilation SystemDirective (LAR).
fischers FIRE STOP range features bothtrade-specific and cross-trade solutions. The fire stops take on a variety of forms, including board (e.g. S90-rated M10 combi-nation board fire stop), mortar, blocks, foamand cushions.
Fire stops to LAR(Pipe and Cable Installation Directive)For penetrations through space-enclosingbuilding elements, the provisions cover thefollowing individual types of service run inseparate or shared openings:
Electrical cables no limit on diameter Non-combustible pipes diameter< 160 mm
Combustible pipes diameter < 32 mm
Constructions complying with LAR specifi-cations are deemed adequate for serviceruns within these size limits. fischer FIRESTOP products for such applications includethe FDB fire protection compound, for sys-tems C1 and T1, and the FM3 mortar, inconjunction with the FBV anti-corrosionfleece for pipes, in systems C2 and T2.
For service runs beyond these size limitsand for several services penetrating a singleopening where the spacing requirementscannot be met, the LAR requires tested andapproved fire stop systems certified forspecific applications under building controllegislation (national technical approvals orbuilding control test certificates). It alsorequires the on-site marking/designation ofthe installed fire stops. fischer providesself-adhesive signs to designate the sys-tems. Moreover, applicators in some casesrequire instruction in the use of the fire stop
systems and the fischer ACADEMY nowoffers special courses for its FIRE STOPcustomers.

Test standard 4102 includes different parts. Building materials are classified in non-flammable (A1, A2) and flammable (B1, B2, B3) classes of building materials.Building members can be composed of different building materials. The relevant parts of DIN 4102 are listed below.
DIN 4102 Content Building members Classification
Part 3 Fire walls and non-load-bearing outside Walls and ceilings Wwalls, terms, requirements and tests
Part 5 List and application of classified building materials, building members and special components
Part 6 Fire protection seals, seals in lift shaft Doors, gates Twalls and in fire-resistant glazing; terms, requirements and tests
Part 9 Cable fire stops, terms, requirements Ventilation systems Land tests Fire stop flaps K
Part 11 Cable jackets, pipe fire stops, installation Pipe fire stops Rshafts and channels, seals for their inspection Installation channels Iopenings; terms, requirements and tests and shafts
Part 12 Function maintenance of electrical cable systems Function maintenance ERequirements and test of electrical systems
Part 13 Fire protection glazing; terms, requirements No heat crossing Fand tests With heat crossing G
The duration of fire resistance specifies the resistance to fire over a certain period of time (in minutes).Building components are classified in fire resistance classes (F 30 F 180 or e.g. R90, L90, S30, K90 . . . ).
DIN 4102 Test Standard
The following fischer FIRE STOP con-structions are currently available as systemsolutions:
Mineral fibre board fire stops for 30-,60- and 90-minute fire resistance in sys-tems C10, C11, M10 and T10. The water-proof and paintable coating and fillercompounds FAB and FAS likewiseprovide all the benefits of universalapplication.
Mortar fire stops for 90-minute fire resis-tance in systems C20, M20 and T20. Thelightweight mortar FMO offers a highcoverage of as much as 2.7 litres/kg.Moreover, the possibility of incorporatingmineral fibre board as permanent shut-tering in floor fire stops obviates theneed for external shuttering.
Cushion fire stops for 90-minute fire resis-tance in system C30. Available in four sizes(S, M, L, XL), the FBK fire stop cushionsfit perfectly into the opening around thecable or cable support systems.
Block fire stops for 30-, 60-, 90- and 120-minute fire resistance in systems C40and C41. The FBB fire stop is a block forall seasons and can be applied withoutancillary materials and in conjunctionwith the FBS fire stop foam.
Foam barriers for 30- and 90-minute fireresistance in systems C50 and C51. TheFBS fire stop foam is ideal for smalleropenings and highly economical, withonly 75 mm thickness in walls with 30-minute fire resistance.
The FBM fire stop sleeve for 90-minutefire resistance in system T60 can beeither plugged on and incorporated ininfill mortar. A sound-control insert isincluded.
Fire stops to LAR(Ventilation System Directive)
The LAR sets out the fire-resistancerequirements for ventilation ducts and asso-ciated shutter units. It also specifies therequirements relating to shutter devices
(fire and smoke dampers), which are nor-mally cast into solid building elements. TheFM3 mortar in system V2 is provided for thisapplication.
