The Charlotte 49ers Athletic Media Relations Department sat down with former 49ers men's soccer player and fi rst-year head coach John Cullen to get his thoughts on the 49ers women's soccer program and the 2009 season. Last season, the 49ers captured their third straight Atlantic 10 regular-season championship and their second consecutive A-10 Tournament title and made the program's fourth NCAA Tournament. The 49ers blanked Tennessee, 2-0, in the fi rst round of the 2008 NCAA Tourna-ment for a school-record 18th win.

What does being a Charlotte 49er mean to you? Well it is a coming home for me even though I’m from England because of the immense pride that I have for the school. When I played here I never imagined that I would end up as a coach here. I enjoyed my four years of college soccer as a student-athlete here. Once I graduated from Charlotte, I experienced several avenues of coaching through college and club. I guess I always thought in the back of my mind that I would love to come back here one day. So to be able to come back here and lead the women’s program and to be the person that the administration has faith in is a great thing.

The 49ers have won 47 games while posting 28-2-1 A-10 record over the past three seasons. Charlotte returns 10 start-ers and 21 letterwinners off a 2008 team which went 18-4-1 and 11-0-0 in the Atlantic 10. What are your thoughts on taking over a program that is the three-time defending A-10 Champions? I think some coaches would be fearful of walking into a program with such success and that is a defi nite challenge to build upon that suc-cess. There are already plenty of aspects in place but as every new coach I want to put my own handprint on the team, but I

have a great core of players that have experienced success and I will call upon them to set an example.

The senior class of Hailey Beam, Lauren Brown and Leah Zappone have won an Atlantic 10 regular-season champi-onship in each of their fi rst three seasons at Charlotte. What are your thoughts on the seniors? With Lauren Brown it is great to have a senior captain as our goalkeeper because it’s important to have experience and leadership in the goal to work with the defense. She is a very game-like player and very enthusiastic. She competes every time whether at training, practice or in games. Hailey Beam is a Hermann Award candidate, which is a refl ection of her ability, but knowing Hailey it is much more than her natural all around game, she is a competitor and that's what drives her. Hailey has the gift to unlock defenses and she has the ability to create extraordinary opportunities for us. Just like Lauren in the back it’s nice to have Hailey up front in the attacking spectrum so that we have someone going forward to create those goals. She is a leader in the way she trains and works. Leah Zappone is a good role model for younger players by showing that there is a role for everybody on the team and you must be ready when called upon. Since Leah is a such a versatile player she adds depth to a number of positions on our team.

The 49ers offense ranked among the nation's leaders in scoring with a school-record 69 goals last season. The 49ers also recorded a school-record 76 assists. Charlotte re-

turns players that accounted for 60 of those 69 goals. In the 49ers' 11 A-10 games last season, Charlotte scored 43 goals. Beam tallied 17 goals en route to earning consensus All-American honors. While Whitney Weinraub, who was named A-10 Offensive Player of the Year, scored 12 goals. Sam Huecker, who earned second-team All-A-10 honors, tallied 12 assists last season and she recorded fi ve assists against Xavier which was the highest single-game total in Division I women's soccer last season. What are your thoughts on returning a majority of the players that contributed to that record setting offense? I think we have a nice balance of options. With Whitney Weinraub we are going to move her around a little bit. Last year she played more in the wider areas, but we may look to put her more central to give her more touches closer to goal. Again we might use her in the wide areas to give her more one-on-one opportunities. So obviously we are expecting goals from her as well as Hailey and Sam Huecker from the midfi eld as well as assists. We defi nitely feel as if we have goal producers on this team it just comes down to creating chances and then of course taking them.

The 49ers defense recorded a school-record 13 shutouts and limited 16 foes to a goal or less last season. Charlotte returns a majority of the players that contributed to the 49ers stout defensive effort in 2008 which only allowed six goals in 11 A-10 regular-season games. What are thoughts on the defensive backline that features three-year starting goalkeeper Lauren Brown, All-Atlantic 10 performers Whitney Bryant and Megan Minnix as well as two-year starters Danielle Mayeaux and Katie Davies as well as Jenna McKeon who started on defense last season as a freshman? I think that is the pleasing part of this season because we have a good place to start with in regards to our defense. Some of the players mentioned will have to adapt to new roles. With Jenna McKeon we are looking at her to become a more attacking player. We are going to ask Megan Minnix and Whitney Bryant to get forward more and have Danielle Mayeaux stay back more to serve as a solid rock at the back with Katie Davies. But the backline is a group that we can hit the ground running with. I want them

to continue with the not conceding goals mentality that is tough to play against. I was pleased with what I saw in the spring as we played six games and had four clean sheets, which is very encouraging as we move into the new season.

The 49ers again face another challenging schedule with non-conference games against nationally recognized programs such as Georgia, NC State, Villanova and William & Mary as well as a trip across the county to face Davidson. Then, the 49ers face strong Atlantic 10 Conference schedule which includes road games at preseason A-10 favorite Dayton, two-time A-10 Tournament Champs Saint Louis as well as Fordham, who reached the 2007 A-10 Championship game, Temple, Saint Joseph's and Xavier. Charlotte will battle Duquesne, George Washington, Massachusetts, Richmond and Rhode Island at home. The regular-season culminates with the 2009 A-10 Tournament which will be played at Charlotte's Transamerica Field. What are your thoughts on the 2009 schedule? I think each game presents its own challenge for us because we are going to play a new brand of soccer and we are going to change up the formation so there will be new roles expected out of players. For each game we will look to learn and garner something from it because at the end of the year we will be looking to contend for the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament title here in Charlotte.

A new era in Charlotte 49ers women's soccer began, January 15, 2009, when John Cullen was named just the fourth coach in the program's history. Cullen is in his fi rst season as head coach at his alma mater after spending eight successful seasons as head women’s soccer coach at Catawba College. “I am extremely pleased to have someone with John’s character, abilities and accomplishments but the one thing that you can never put a price tag on -- the one thing that truly excites me -- is his passion for our program,” Charlotte Director of Athletics Judy Rose said. “To have an alum, who was a member of our soc-cer program, who has great coaching credentials, come home is the best of both worlds. What he’s done there is remarkable and I think the sky’s the limit for him, here. He has a vision for our program that exceeds what we have done.” Cullen, a native of London, England, has coached Catawba College for the past eight years, winning a pair of South Atlantic Conference championships and taking the Indians to four NCAA Division II Regionals and two regional fi nals. He was a four-time SAC Coach of the Year and was named the NSCAA Regional Coach of the Year in 2005 after leading the Indians to a 16-4-1 record that included a regular-season title in the South Atlantic Conference and a trip to the NCAA Regional fi nal. “I need to give a special thank you to athletic director Judy Rose and Kim Whitestone for their faith and belief in me to lead the program forward," Cullen said. "I’m truly honored to be named the 49ers women’s soccer coach. UNC Charlotte has been home to me on many, many fronts. I enjoyed a playing career here, formed lifelong relationships and Charlotte has made a difference in my life and I hope to come back and make a difference in Charlotte’s life. When I walked back on campus yesterday and was welcomed so warmly, it was like when I fi rst walked on campus in 1989 - I truly knew I was home. I’m glad to be back among the Charlotte family once again. I’m looking forward to my new adventure with the 49ers women’s soccer team.” In eight years at Catawba, Cullen posted a 113-33-16 record. He coached a pair of all-Americans, an academic all-American, two SAC Players of the Year, 18 All-Region selections and 32 All-Conference players at Catawba. In addition to his collegiate resume, Cullen boasts strong ties at the Olympic Development level. Cullen served as Assistant Director of Coaching at the Charlotte Soccer Club from 1992-2001. In 2001, he began working with the North Carolina Olympic Devel-opment Program and joined the US Region III ODP staff in 2006. Overall, he posted a 46-4 record with the NC ODP program including an unbeaten, unscored upon slate in 16 games with the `90’s NC ODP team. For three years, Cullen served as Executive Director of Soccer with the FC Carolina Alliance in Concord, N.C.

Our current players will love working with her and our prospective student-athletes will be very impressed by her knowledge and love of Charlotte. She brings all the attributes you look for in a coach, vibrant, passionate, great coaching experience and playing background. Her teams have always been successful and well prepared. Sarah demonstrates a quality that I value very highly, always being there for her players. I’m truly excited she has become a part of our coaching staff.” Denton has spent the past three seasons as head coach at Pfeiffer University. THE ATLANTIC 10

JUDY ROSEDIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Charlotte 49ers Director of Athletics Judy

Rose is one of the most successful and well-respected Athletics Directors in the nation. At the time of her appointment in 1990, she was just the third female to be put in charge of a Division I program. In 1999-2000, she became the fi rst female to serve on the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee. She served a fi ve-year term (2000-2004) on that committee. She also completed a term as 2003-04 President of the National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA).

With the 49ers, she has overseen the 49ers moves from the Sun Belt Conference to the Metro Conference to Conference USA and onto the Atlantic 10 in 2005-06. She has overseen the 49ers growth into a program that for the fi rst time is fully-funded at the NCAA level for athletic scholarships. She has helped raise monies for new athletic facilities, including the James H. Barnhardt Student Activity Center (Dale F. Halton Arena), the Miltimore-Wallis Athletics and Academic Training Center, the Irwin Belk Track and Field Center (Transamerica Field), the Wachovia Fieldhouse, the Short Game Golf Practice Facility at Rocky River Golf of Concord, N.C. and the Robert and Mariam Hayes Baseball Stadium. The 49ers will begin construction on their on-campus tennis facility in the spring of 2010. In all, she has helped develop nearly $50 million worth of athletic facilities which have enhanced playing venues, academic services, strength and conditioning programs, training and medical support. In all, these upgrades have improved the experience of each and every student-athlete, as a student and as an athlete. She has been instrumental in attracting national sporting events to Charlotte, including the 1994 Men’s Final Four, the 1996 Women’s Final Four, the 1997 AAU Junior Olympics and the 1999 and 2000 NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer College Cup. In 2008, the 49ers hosted the NCAA Div. I Men’s Basketball East Regional at Bobcats Arena.

It is under her watch that the 49ers have expanded opportunities to include women’s soccer and men’s and women’s track. Her next step has been to lead the 49ers most aggressive push to add football to the Charlotte 49ers program. Winning approval from both the Chancellor and UNC Charlotte Board of Trustees, the 49ers have pushed forward with plans to start the program in 2013. In addition, it has been under Rose’s leadership that the 49ers athletics program has enjoyed its best success. The men’s basketball program has copped nine NCAA bids under her reign and men’s soccer has enjoyed fi ve bids, including a trip to the 1996 National Semifi nals. Baseball, wommen’s basketball, women’s soccer and golf have all posted multiple NCAA Tournament bids while the men’s tennis team earned its fi rst-ever bid. The 49ers have also landed their fi rst-ever individual NCAA qualifi ers in men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and fi eld and cross-country. Recent highlights include four straight A-10 titles for the women’s indoor track, women’s outdoor track and golf programs as well as a program-best third-place fi nish at the 2007 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship. With that top four fi nish, Charlotte has boasted a “Final Four” team in both decades that Rose has served as A.D. (‘90’s - M. Soccer, 1996; ‘00’s - Golf, 2007). Since Rose became A.D., 14 of the school’s 16 athletic programs have either won a league title or been represented in NCAA play, or both. Along the way, Rose has reaped her share of awards, most notably the 2001 NACDA Southeast Region Athletic Director of the Year Award. Other awards have included the Pegasus Award in 1999, the 1996 Bob Quincy Award by the Charlotte Sportsman Club, and the 1996 Charlotte Regional Sports Commission “Sixth-Man” Award for city-wide athletic achievement. She was selected the 1996 Woman of the Year in Charlotte and was named the 1997 Citizen of the Year by the University Chamber of Commerce. In 1986, she became the fi rst female inducted into the Blacksburg (S.C.) Hall of Fame and she received her 25-Year Service Award from UNC Charlotte in 2000. More recently, she was inducted into Winthrop’s Athletics Hall of Fame, was named one of the city’s Top Businesswomen by The Business Journal and was recognized with the Judy Wilkins Rose endowment as part of the University YMCA’s Y Pathways program.

On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What started as an eight-school, men’s basketball-only affi liation has grown into a 14-university, 21-sport league that is universally hailed as one of the best conferences in the country. That growth and prominence is a direct result of the ideals and commitments of the member institutions of the Atlantic 10 - the University of Dayton, Duquesne University, Fordham University, The George Washington University, La Salle University, Univer-sity of Massachusetts, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, University of Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St. Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph’s University, Saint Louis University, Temple University, and Xavier University. The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade, have made a strong commitment to making the academic and athletics equation a successful one. Over the years, the league membership has strived to better recog-

nize the academic accomplishments of its student-athletes. The Commissioner’s Honor Roll, which cites every Atlantic 10 student-athlete with a 3.5 grade point aver-age or better, recog-

nized 1,162 student-athletes in the Fall 2008 while 1,164 were named to the Spring 2009 Honor Roll. The league sponsors Academic All-Conference teams in each of its sports and honors one student-athlete per sport as the A-10 Student-Athlete of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides four postgraduate scholarship grants to qualifi ed student-athletes. In 2000-09, 182 student-athletes earned Academic All-Conference recognition, while Charlotte’s Lamarra Currie, Christa Dominick of La Salle, St. Bonaventure’s Katelyn Murray and David Zenk of George Washington received postgraduate scholarship grants.

The Atlantic 10 Conference had 50 teams among the 767 Division I sports teams honored by the NCAA with public recognition awards for their latest multi-year Academic Progress Rate scores. These teams posted multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. This represents an increase of 16 teams from a year ago and ranked the league fi fth among 31 Division I Conferences.

In 19 of the 21 sports sponsored by the Atlantic 10, the league’s APR was at or above the conference average nationally according to the most recent data released by the NCAA. Moreover, 75 A-10 teams attained a perfect score in the NCAA’s Graduation Success Rate Report. The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a total population of nearly 74 million people within its geographic footprint of eight states and the District of Columbia, will crown champions in 21 sports this season: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, fi eld hockey, men’s golf, women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & fi eld, women’s rowing, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming & div-ing, men’s and women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball.
