friendS of cal aquaticS

The Friends of Cal Aquatics is an orga-nization of alumni, parents, and supporters of all four Cal Aquatics programs-men’s and women’s swimming & diving and water polo teams.

The Friends of Cal Aquatics fundraising committee works in conjunction with the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and the Cal Athletic Development office to raise necessary funds for the four Cal Aquatics programs. The support from the Friends of Cal Aquatics provides vital financial assistance in the form of annual gifts and contributions to endowment funds for student scholarships, as well as the day-to-day operating costs for the aquatics programs in perpetuity.

Friends of Cal Aquatics evolved from the efforts provided by four generous visionaries and alumni: Rick Cronk, Don Fisher, Warren Hellman and Ned Spieker, who founded the Splash Club Endowment Fund in the 1980’s by providing a leadership gift of matching funds which raised a total of $2 Million for the programs. Another prominent Cal Aquatics endowment fund was established in honor of the legendary Cal Swimming and Water Polo Coach Pete Cutino. The Peter J. Cutino Scholarship Fund enables the men’s water polo program the opportunity to attract nation-ally prominent water polo players to Cal.

The Cal Aquatics teams are traditionally the finest in the nation, but if these programs are to maintain the level of excellence they have enjoyed, new sources of revenue must be found. The only way to insure competitive funding for the aquatics programs in the future is through your support of the Friends of Cal Aquatics. For further information on Friends of Cal Aquatics, contact the Cal Athletic Development Office at 510-643-2746 or visit calaquatics.com.

2009 SeaSon outlook

Senior co-captain Spencer Warden

After a one year hiatus from compet-ing for a national championship, the 2009 California men’s water polo

team is back and ready for another run at the NCAA crown. Kirk Everist’s squad was not able to make it three-straight in 2008 after winning back-to-back titles in 2006 and 2007, yet the Golden Bears return five players with championship rings and the knowledge of what it takes to capture a final, plus several other standouts ready to build on Cal’s legacy of 13 national titles.

Leading the Bears’ way to the top will be senior captain Spencer Warden, Cal’s most decorated returning player. Warden, a 6-4, 190-pounder, is a three-time All-Amer-ican and was a second-team All-America pick last season after leading the team of-fensively with 40 goals and defensively with 68 steals. He has been a clutch performer ever since his freshman season when he was MPSF Newcomer of the Year and pro-duced the match-winning assist against USC in the 2006 NCAA title match.

Two more stalwarts, senior captain Mike Sample and junior Brian Dudley, repre-sent the best in Cal’s athletic and academ-ic excellence. Sample gained valuable international experience this past summer as a member of the United State’s squad,

coached by Everist, which competed at the World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia. He is a two-time member of the ACWPC All-Academic team, and was a contributor on the 2007 NCAA title team, playing in 30 of the squad’s 32 matches that year.

Dudley, a 6-5, 210-pounder from Johan-nesburg, South Africa, is another two-time ACWPC All-Academic honoree and was a key player in the Bears’ 2007 NCAA cham-pionship run, scoring a goal against USC in the finals. He has notched 47 goals in two seasons, including 28 goals last year when he had the match-winning shot in overtime against Long Beach State, was selected the Nov. 17 MPSF Player of the Week and was an honorable mention All-American.

Junior center Zach White and junior goalie Jacob McIntosh are two more bearers of championship rings and both had busy summers. White, a 6-4, 220-pound left-hander, was an alternate on Everist’s World University Games team,

won a silver medal in July at the Maccabiah Games in Israel and helped the Lamorinda club team to second-place finish at the Men’s Senior Nationals. He has 33 goals in two sea-sons, and as a true fresh-man was the only player to compete in all 32 matches during the team’s 2007 na-tional title run. McIntosh is Cal’s incumbent at goalie, playing in 25 of 28 match-es last season, recording 212 saves with 31 steals and 23 assists. He excelled this past sum-mer, helping Lamorinda to a silver medal at Senior Nationals, and is a two-time first-team summer All-American.

There is no doubt additional fire-power will be provided by sophomores Ivan Rackov and Luka Saponjic from Bel-grade, Serbia. Rackov, a 6-2, 185-pounder and Saponjic, a 6-5, 225-pound left-hand-er, were immediate contributors last sea-son as true freshmen. Rackov was fourth on the team with 31 goals and also added a team-high 33 assists with 30 steals and 21 ejections earned, including four goals in the MPSF Tournament. He was a first-team summer All-American for Lamorinda as well. Saponjic tallied 24 goals in 19 matches last fall, then helped Serbia to bronze medals at both the FINA World League Champi-onships and the World University Games (held in his hometown of Belgrade) this past summer as one of the youngest players on the Serbian National Team.

The Bears’ talent pool continues to run deep with the return of key sophomores

Charlie Steffens and Cory Nasoff. Stef-fens, the son of Carlos Steffens (three-time Cal All-American, 1979 Pac-10 Player of the Year), is a 6-3, 190-pound attacker who scored 18 goals as a redshirt freshman, including goals against UCLA and Long Beach State in the MPSF Tournament. He is also a fine student, earning ACWPC and MPSF All-Academic honors. Nasoff, at 6-2, 190 pounds, notched 17 goals in 26 matches with 27 steals, 13 assists and 12 ejections earned as a redshirt freshman. He also scored three goals in the MPSF Tournament and this past summer was an All-American in helping Lamorinda to a sil-ver medal at Senior Nationals.

Cal has a slew of other players are as-sured of an opportunity to showcase their talents. Sophomores Zach Greenwood (6-4, 219) and Jack Stampfl (6-6, 215) will provide an inside presence after compet-ing in 24 and 21 matches, respectively, last season. Newcomers Iosefa Tuiasau (6-2,

240, junior from Wellington, New Zealand/West Valley College) and Marko Pance (6-2, 185, sophomore trans-fer from UC Santa Barbara) will be in the mix for play-ing time, as will sophomore center back Travis Bick-ham, redshirt freshman utility man Spencer White (brother of Zach White) and redshirt freshman attacker Mason Cox.

Nine more athletes are also in line for playing time this season – juniors Adam

Cline and Sandy French, sophomores Bryan Schnugg and Eric Johnson, and redshirt freshmen Brian Schmidt, Marin Balarin, Nathaniel Vail and Marker An-derson.

Besides McIntosh, there will be addition-al competition for starting duties manning Cal’s goal. The Bears have sophomore goalie Wil Toppen, who had 39 saves in seven contests last season, as well as talented true freshman Justin Parsons, freshman Steve Giahos and redshirt freshman Stephen Ambrose.

“We have a nice mix of younger and old-er players,” said Everist. “The team is hun-gry after a lot of close losses last season (five of nine losses were by one goal), but this is a talented group that has grown to-gether and gotten better. The team is now a year older and is finding ways to be more consistent. We have the ability to control the tempo of the game, both offensively and defensively, and the talent to defeat anyone we face. I am excited to see how it all comes together.”

In addition to his work at Miramonte High School, Everist served as water polo commis-sioner at San Fran-cisco’s Olympic Club from 1999-2001, a period that produced a gold medal and two silver medals in FINA World Masters com-petition. Also, since 2000 he has been co-head coach for the Lamorinda water polo team, leading that club to the 2001, 2004 and 2005 USA Water Polo 20-Under na-tional championships, and the 2002 Northern California Zone Junior Olympic title. In January of 2005, Everist added to his duties the position of treasurer of the College Water Polo Coaches Association.

A 1990 Cal graduate, Everist propelled the Bears to national championships in 1987 and 1988 as a player. He earned NCAA All-American status from 1986-88 and was named the NCAA National Player of the Year in 1988. Everist went on to play for the United States National Team for nine years (1988-96) and was a member of the USA Olympic Team at the 1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta Games. He also competed on America’s gold medal winning water polo teams at the 1991 World University Games and 1995 Pan American Games.

Producing back-to-back NCAA titles, two Mountain Pacific Sports Federation crowns, 33 All-Americans and numerous

academic honorees, Kirk Everist has proven to be the perfect individual to perpetuate the tradition of excellence that defines California water polo. In seven seasons (159-49, .764) Everist has twice led the Golden Bears to the pinnacle of the sport; directing his alma mater to its NCAA-record 13th national crown with a 8-6 win over USC in 2007 after a thrilling 7-6 last-second national championship victory over the Trojans in 2006.

A former three-time All-American, 1988 NCAA Player of the Year and two-time United States Olympian, Everist, 42, earned the 2002 MPSF Coach of the Year honors in his inaugural season when he guided Cal to the MPSF Tournament title and a national runner-up finish. Then in 2004, he was inducted into both the Cal Athletic and the USA Water Polo Hall of Fames. In 2006, Everist was selected USA Water Polo’s Elite Co-Coach of the Year after leading the Bears to both the MPSF and NCAA titles. Most recently, he coached the United States’ World University Games team that competed this past summer in Belgrade, Serbia, mentoring five Bears, including senior Mike Sample and junior Zach White.

On July 29, 2002 Everist returned to his alma mater and immediately led the Bears to a 20-7 mark and Cal’s first MPSF title and national runner-up finish since 1995. Now after guiding the Bears to the school’s first back-to-back NCAA trophies since the early ’90s, Everist and his troops will be vying for another national crown in 2009.

Before his successful return to Berkeley, Everist had contributed to eight CIF North Coast championships as an assistant coach at Miramonte High School. During Everist’s 11-year tenure at Miramonte, the school also produced nine league titles and three third-place finishes in the California State Tournament. He helped develop 22 high school All-Americans, and three of his former

Brian SchulManathletic trainer

Brian Schulman is in his sixth season as the head athletic trainer for the California men’s wa-ter polo program. Schulman, 30, has extensive experience in athletic training, having worked for the San Francisco 49ers, at Fresno State and UC Santa Barbara, and for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He is also the athletic trainer for the Golden Bears’ baseball and women’s soccer programs.

Prior to joining Cal in March of 2004, Schulman was an intern assistant athletic trainer for the San Francisco 49ers in 2003-04. He came to the 49ers from Fresno State, where he worked with the football and baseball programs while earning his masters’ degree in exercise physiology. As an undergraduate at UC Santa Barbara, Schulman was a student athletic trainer for the baseball, men’s basketball and men’s soccer programs. He graduated from UCSB in 2001 with degrees in political science, and health and exercise science. Schulman had an internship with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the summer of 2000 and is also a certified strength and conditioning specialist.

A native of Encino, Calif., Schulman and his wife, Megan, reside in Dublin.

Boyd lachanceassociate head coach

Boyd Lachance, a huge factor in the Golden Bears capturing the 2006 and 2007 NCAA titles, has been the associate head coach for the Cal men’s water polo since July 18, 2003 after playing a major role in the Bears winning the MPSF title and advancing to the NCAA title match in his first year as an assistant in 2002.

Lachance, 37, came to Cal after an outstand-ing water polo career at Pacific in the early ‘90s and seven years of coaching club, high school and community college water polo. As a two-year starter for the Tigers (1992-93), he was Pacific’s second leading scorer in 1992 (35 goals in 20 matches), finishing his career with a scoring aver-age of 1.09 goals per game. In addition, Lachance was a member of the only Tiger water polo team in school history to reach the NCAA tournament, achieving a No. 5 national ranking in 1993.

Transferring his skills from the pool to the pool deck, Lachance has coached in the national and international scene. He was added to the USA Men’s Senior National Team staff and coached the National B Team coach following the 2008 Beijing Olympics, working under national team coach Terry Schroeder. In 2002, Lachance was an assistant coach with the National Cadet Team in Serbia, the head coach of two Pacific Zone Divi-sion II Premier League championship squads and the assistant coach for the Pacific Zone Division I Premier League national championship team. He was also co-head coach at Campolindo High School from 1999-2000 and an associate head coach at Diablo Valley College in 2001.

Lachance has been part of 12 USWP na-tional championships (six 20-Under, four Premier League, two 18-Under) and two NCAA titles in his coaching tenure, while developing 79 USWP All-Americans, six high school All-Americans and three community college All-Americans along the way. Since joining the Cal program in 2002, he has helped coach 33 NCAA All-Americans.

In addition to his coaching duties at Cal, Lachance is the club director of Lamorinda Water Polo, which he founded in 1999. Since 2002, all members of the Bears’ water polo program have gone through the Lamorinda club system.

Lachance received a degree in sociology from Pacific in 1994. He resides in East Sacramento with his wife, Gretchen, and son, Carson, four; son Nolan, three and son, Kellan, born June 23, 2009.

Sean nolanassistant coach

Former Golden Bear goalie (1991-94) and 2000 Olympian Sean Nolan, 37, is in his fifth season as an assistant coach at Cal.

Nolan joined the Bears’ coaching staff after a successful national and international water polo career. A member of the USA Senior National team from 1994-2000, he competed in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, helping the United States to sixth place finish along with other former Cal stars Gavin Arroyo, Chris Humbert and Chris Oeding. Nolan was also on Team USA’s gold medal-winning squad at the 1993 World University Games in Buffalo, NY; was named Goalie of the Tournament at the 1997 Unicon Cup in Budapest, Hungary; and helped the United States to a gold medal at the 1999 PanAm Games in Winnipeg, Ontario, Canada. He played professionally in Greece for the club team, Naok, in the town of Corfu from 1996-97.

A three-time All-American (1992, 1993, 1994) at Cal, Nolan graduated in 1995 with a degree in political economies of industrial societies. He led the Bears to NCAA titles in 1991 and 1992, including making two match-saving blocks at the end of regulation in the ‘92 title match against Stanford. The 1992 NCAA championship match is considered by many to be the greatest title match in NCAA water polo history as Cal went on to win 12-11 in sudden death overtime to finish with a perfect 31-0 season record. Nolan was the recipient of the Peter J. Cutino Water Polo Trophy in 1992 as the team’s most improved player, and was the team’s Most Valuable Player in 1994.

Although the 2008 California men’s water polo team did not achieve its goal of winning a third-straight

NCAA title, the Golden Bears still finished 19-9 overall (4-4 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play), No. 7 in the final national rankings and had four All-Americans. Junior attacker Spencer Warden was named a second-team All-American by the Associa-tion of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches, while three other Bears – seniors Frank Reynolds and Trent Calder, and sophomore Brian Dudley – were tabbed as ACWPC honor-able mention All-Americans.

Warden, a team captain along with Reynolds and Calder, led the Bear’s with 40 goals in 27 matches. He also paced Cal with 68 steals, was second on the team in ejections earned (27) and field blocks (11), and third in assists (29). Warden scored five goals during the MPSF Tournament and was named first-team All-MPSF. He now has 96 goals in three years at Cal, earning honorable mention All-America honors as a freshman and third-team All-America honors as a sophomore. As a freshman in 2006, Warden was named MPSF Newcomer of the Year and has been first-team All-MPSF the past two years.

Reynolds was the first MPSF Player of the Week selection of 2008 (Sept. 8) after lead-ing the Bears with 11 goals and adding four assists, three steals, three ejections earned and two field blocks during the Navy Open in Annapolis, Md. He finished second on the

team with 35 goals and had 30 assists, 20 steals, 11 ejections earned and seven field blocks. Reynolds ended up scoring 68 goals in his three seasons at Cal.

Calder, team captain in both 2007 and 2008, was third on the ‘08 squad with 33 goals and led the Bears with 14 field blocks. He added 21 steals, 18 assists and six ejec-tions earned, concluding his career with

96 goals. Both Calder and Reynolds were key players on Cal’s back-to-back national title runs.

Dudley, a two-time Academic All-America and MPSF All-Academic selection (3.42 GPA in business administration), scored 28 goals with 35 steals, 24 ejections earned and 14 assists in 2008. He was the Nov. 17 MPSF Player of the Week after leading the Bears to league victories over Long Beach State and UC Irvine, notching the match-winning goal in sudden death overtime at Long Beach State.

Juniors Mike Sample (3.26, interdisciplin-ary studies) and Scott Cruikshank (3.14, interdisciplinary studies), and redshirt fresh-man Charlie Steffens (3.35, undeclared) joined Dudley as Cal’s 2008 academic honorees. Dudley was placed in the Supe-rior Class with a GPA between 3.41-3.70; while Sample, Cruikshank and Steffens were members of the Excellent Class with GPAs between 3.20-3.40. Sample was also named the recipient of the Walter A. Haas Jr. Community Service Award given annually to a student-athlete for his or her outstanding contributions to community service.

Actually, the entire men’s water polo team contributed in the classroom as Kirk Everist’s squad had the highest team GPA of any of Cal’s men’s varsity sports with a 3.245 GPA during the 2008 fall semester. With the impressive team GPA during the fall, Everist’s squad was tops among all of the Bears’ men’s sports during the 2008-09 school year with a cumulative team GPA of 3.162. Frank Reynolds

ruleS, reGulationS & terMSintroduction

Water polo, the oldest team sport in the Olympics, is a game of skill, endurance and swimming ability played in a 20 by 30 meter pool. There are seven players, six in the field and one goalkeeper. The object of the game is to shoot a the ball into a one-by-three meter goal. One point is scored for each goal. A player may shoot for a one-point goal, without a fake or a hesitation, after an ordinary foul outside of seven meters. The game consists of four, eight-minute quar-ters, with each team allowed 35 seconds to take a shot.

GaMe PlayThe game starts with both teams lined

up on the opposite ends of the pool. They sprint for the ball dropped in the middle of the field of play by the referee. Teams advance the ball by passing, or dribbling (swimming with it). Only one hand may be used on the ball at one time, with the exception of the goalkeeper. Defensively teams will play man-to-man and zone defenses. No player is allowed to hold, sink, pull back or otherwise interfere with the free limb movement of an opponent unless the player has his hand on the ball. It is the object of the defense to play the ball and not the man. The timing of the foul is critical in all defensive plays. Poor timing often results in ejection fouls.

foulSThe referee indicates a foul by blowing a

whistle and pointing with the hand toward the team that has possession, indicating the direction of the team’s attack. That team may receive a free throw. There are ordinary fouls and major fouls.

Ordinary fouls - offending team gets a free throw from the point of the infraction.

1. Two hand touch of the ball. 2. Taking the ball underwater and touched by an opposing player. 3. Impeding the progress of a player who does not have the ball. 4. Pushing off of an opponent. 5. Stalling.Major fouls - Offending player ejected

for 35 seconds or until a goal is scored or there is a possession change.

1. Kick/strike an opponent. 2. Interfere with a free throw. 3. Hold, sink or pull back an opponent without the ball. 4. Misconduct, disrespect. 5. Ordinary foul in dead time (the time between the call of the foul and the actual putting the ball into play).

terMinoloGyBack Door: An offensive drive from the

wing position on the weak side (away from the ball).

Ball Under: A minor foul (see #2 under ordinary fouls).

Center Throw: A free throw from in front of the goal at the two-meter line, awarded when the ball goes over the goal line last touched by a defensive player.

Counter Attack: A fast break.Dry Pass: Pass from one player to another

without the ball touching the water.Extra Man: A man up situation, usually six

on five and a “power play” situation.Inside Water: The offensive player has

an advantageous position in front of the defender, with nothing but open water in front of him and the goal.

Moving Pick: Moving screen intended to free an offensive player for a release pass and/or shot.

Natural Goals: Goals scored when both teams have an even amount of players.

Penalty Shot: A free shot taken by the offensive player from the five-meter line, awarded when a foul occurs inside the four-meter line preventing the probable scoring of a goal.

Point: Position at the top, of the 12 o’clock area of the offensive set-up, in the center of the pool.

Release: A player making himself avail-able for a pass.

Switch: Defenders switching defensive responsibilities.

Wet Pass: A pass from one player to another that lands near the receiver in the water.

Wet Shot: A shot attempt while the ball is controlled in the water, usually a quick wrist shot. Also called off the water shot.

Nick Folker enters his sixth year at the helm of the California Aquatic Strength Program. Since joining the Golden Bears, Folker has helped guide Cal aquatics

to three NCAA team champion-ships (men’s water polo in 2006 and 2007, women’s swimming in 2009), as well as developing numerous individual and relay national champions, and several Olympic medalists.

A native of Curry’s Post, South Africa, Folker swam for the Uni-versity of Hawaii under renowned sprint coach Dr. Samuel J. Freas and was a seven-time All-American and Hawaii’s first-ever individual first-team All-American. He also represented South Africa interna-tionally from 1996-2002 at such competi-tions as the Olympic Games, World Cham-pionships, Short-Course World Champion-ships, Commonwealth Games, All-Africa Games and the FINA World Cup.

Folker graduated from the University of

Hawaii with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, holds a master’s degree in kinesiology from Cal State East Bay, and owns certifications in strength and condi-tioning (CSCS) and swimming (USS).

Serving as home to the California water polo and swimming teams is the Spieker Aquatics Complex, one

of the finest outdoor facilities in the United States.

Located on the corner of Dana and Ban-croft on the south side of Haas Pavilion, the one million dollar facility was completed in the fall of 1982. It was made possible through

the Cal Sports ‘80s project and was named after former Cal water polo letterman Edward “Ned” Spieker, who provided the major por-tion of the funds for the project.

The facility replaced the antiquated Har-mon Pool, which served as the home for California aquatics for 50 years. The primary aspect of the extensive remodeling project was the joining of the two previously existing tanks to provide for the 50-meter by 25-yard pool of deep water, suitable for major national and international water polo and swimming championships. Spieker Aquatics Complex has served as the site of the United States Senior National Water Polo Championship in 1984 and ‘86, the National Qualifying Tournament for collegiate women’s water polo in 1997 and 2000, the women’s Moun-

One thing that hasn’t changed with the Bears move into Spieker is Cal’s dominance at home. Between 1976 and ‘81, the Bears’ men’s water polo team lost just one league match at home. Since the Cal men played their first match in the Spieker Aquatics Complex in the middle of the 1982 season, the Bears have compiled a 200-48 (.806) record. In 1991 and ‘92, the Cal men went through the home season unbeaten, winning all 19 of their matches at Spieker.

The Bear women played their first home matches as a varsity sport in Spieker during the 1996 season and have compiled a home record of 75-24 (.758).

acadeMic GaMe PlanCOMPREHENSIVE PROGRAM FOCUSES ON GOLDEN BEAR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT

While the California football program has produced school records of six straight bowl appearances and four consecutive bowl triumphs as part of

59 wins overall in the last seven years, the mission for Cal football is: To EDUCATE and GRADUATE all football student-athletes with a meaningful degree that will support their future successes in whatever field they choose.

Cal’s unique “Academic Game Plan” (AGP) is a program established by head coach Jeff Tedford to ensure success in the classroom as well as on the field. AGP, under the direction of Cal’s director of student-athlete development, consists of players meeting regularly with coaches and counselors to review coursework and assignments. Play-ers are given an “Academic Game Planner,” which they are required to keep up-to-date. The point of AGP is to ap-proach academics just like a game, with a plan. The play-ers would never go into a game situation without studying film, having a plan, practicing and preparation. Tedford and the Cal staff want student-athletes to approach academics the same way.

AcAdemic Achievement

ATHLETIC STUDY CENTERThe Athletic Study Center, which is

housed within the Division of Under-graduate Education, is the tutorial and academic support program for the nearly 900 student-athletes at Cal. Centrally located in the Cesar Chavez Student Center, the program provides a spacious and comfortable area for quiet study, individual classrooms for tutorials, and a computer lab for word processing and required course work.

TUTORIAL PROGRAMThe tutorial program promotes and

enhances students’ academics skills and progress by providing individu-al tutoring, group workshops, study groups, credit courses and intensive special programs. The Athletic Study Center has between 50-60 tutors on staff per semester to guarantee that students receive the best possible support. Tutorial sessions are offered at night to enable student-athletes to receive help after practices when they have more time to devote to studying.

Of the 18 players signed in 2002 in coach Tedford’s first class, 15 (83%) graduated within five years. A total of 20 players over the past 10 years have earned graduate de-grees while playing and 10 of those players who earned graduate degrees have gone on to play in the NFL, in-cluding Adimchinobe Echemandu, Tyler Fredrickson, Scott Fujita, Nick Harris, L.P. Ladouceur, Alex Mack and John Welbourn.

For the 2005-06 academic year, the Cal football team achieved the highest score possible (1000) in the Aca-demic Progress Rate (APR). This past year, Cal posted a multi-year score of 970, second among Pac-10 schools. In addition, 74 student-athletes on the football team have earned Pac-10 All-Academic honors in the Tedford era.

ADVISING PROGRAMSThe advising programs offer a broad

range of services to meet the unique needs of Cal’s student-athletes, which include assistance in understanding and complying with university, college and NCAA requirements, the devel-opment of time management skills and the resolution of personal issues unique to student-athletes.

Sandy BarBourdirector of athletics

As Director of Athlet-ics at the University of California, Sandy Barbour oversees an Athletic Department that ranks as one of the most successful in the country with a mission that seeks to match its

level of excellence with that attained by the University as a whole.

Under Barbour’s leadership, the Golden Bears have developed into a model pro-gram that has become a mainstay among the Top 10 in the annual NACDA Directors’ Cup standings. Cal once again matched the school’s best-ever finish in 2008-09 with a seventh-place standing, which was achieved with a national championship in women’s swimming, a runner-up finish in women’s tennis and women’s rowing, and top-five finishes in men’s swimming (4th), men’s gymnastics (4th) and volleyball (5th). The Bears were also seventh in 2006 and ’08.

“Sandy Barbour was my first appointment at Berkeley, and I consider it a privilege to have her as our athletic director,” Chancellor Robert J. Birgeneau said. “Under her leader-ship, our student-athletes are excelling on and off the field, supported by a department committed to excellence, equity and compre-hensive compliance with the rules.”

Since Barbour began her tenure in Berke-ley on Sept. 15, 2004, Cal programs have captured 10 national team championships and 43 individual titles.

In addition, the Golden Bear football team has won four consecutive bowl games – the Las Vegas Bowl in 2005, the Holiday Bowl in 2006, the Armed Forces Bowl in 2007 and the Emerald Bowl in 2008 – and shared the Pac-10 championship for the first time in 21 seasons in 2006.

Overall, Cal supports a 27-sport program with more than 800 student-athletes and a budget in excess of $60 million.

On the academic front, more than half of Cal’s 27 programs maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, with 11 of them earning cumulative GPAs higher than their histori-cal average last year. All Bear teams also surpassed the required minimum score in the most recent Academic Progress Report, and more than 175 student-athletes have earned academic all-conference recognition in each of the last five years.

One of the “100 Most Influential Women in Business” in the Bay Area according to the San Francisco Business Times, Barbour was

named a regional Athletic Director of the Year for 2008-09 by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), and she was a finalist for National AD of the Year at the Sports Business Awards. Barbour was previously chosen a 2006 Woman of Distinction by the East Bay Busi-ness Times and the 2006 National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA) Division I-A National Administrator of the Year.

Barbour is an active member of sev-eral committees on both the national and conference levels. Currently chair of the Pac-10 Budget and Finance Committee, she is also a member of the Pac-10 Executive Committee and the Pac-10 Television Committee and served as vice president of the confer-ence for 2007-08. In addition, Barbour is on the NACDA Executive Commit-tee, the NCAA Diversity Leadership Strategic Planning Committee, the NCAA Women’s Basketball Discus-sion Group and the WBCA Defensive Player of the Year Selection Committee.

Prior to moving to Berkeley, Barbour was the deputy director of athletics at Notre Dame, serving as the university’s senior athletic administrator from July 2002 to September 2004. She previously held an associate athletic director position there starting in 2000.

Barbour’s career in intercollegiate athletic administration spans 28 years, beginning as a field hockey assistant coach and lacrosse administrative assistant at the University of Massachusetts in 1981. She has since served as assistant athletic director at North-western and in 1991 was recruited to Tulane as an associate athletic director.

In 1996, Barbour was appointed Tulane’s director of athletics at age 36, and during her three years overseeing the program, Green Wave teams won 12 conference champion-ships. In her first year in the position, the school captured four conference titles, a feat never before accomplished in Tulane history. She also hired Tommy Bowden as head football coach during her first year. Bowden proceeded in 1997 to post the Green Wave’s first winning season (7-4) in 16 years, and then directed the school to a 12-0 record, a Conference USA championship and a No. 7 national ranking the following season as the 1998 Liberty Bowl champions.

In her position at Notre Dame, Barbour oversaw facilities and event operations for the school’s 26-sport program, including football game management and the de-partment’s two golf courses. She was also

responsible for developing, maintaining and implementing Notre Dame’s $127 million athletics facilities master plan.

Additionally, her role at Notre Dame in-cluded responsibilities for women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s cross country, indoor and outdoor track, men’s and women’s swim-ming and men’s golf. She also assisted with the administration of women’s basketball.

Born Dec. 2, 1959, in Annapolis, Md., Barbour grew up in a military family. Her father was a career aviator in the U.S. Navy, and her family lived in various U.S. loca-tions as well as in Western Europe during her childhood.

Barbour graduated cum laude in 1981 with a B.S. degree in physical education from Wake Forest, where she was a four-year letterwinner and served as captain of the field hockey team. She also played two varsity seasons of women’s basketball.

Barbour earned advanced degrees at both Massachusetts (an M.S. in sports manage-ment in 1983) and Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management (an MBA in 1991).

Between master’s programs, Barbour served as assistant field hockey and lacrosse coach at Northwestern from 1982-84. She also held the position of director of recruiting services during that period, before being promoted to assistant athletic director for intercollegiate programs in 1984, a position she held until 1989.

Prior to joining Tulane, Barbour worked in programming and production for FOX Sports Net in Chicago during the summer of 1990.

Located across the Bay Bridge from San Francisco, Oakland is a city of over 400,000, jam-packed with exciting attractions, stimulating arts and an ideal climate. Oakland’s charm exceeds its man-made wonders, as its tumbling hills, vast forests, hiking and riding trails, beautiful lakes and numerous parks provide a natural escape for those who prefer nature over an urban environment.

Berkeley, just a 12-mile drive from San Francisco, is situated on 17.7 square miles with a population of just under 103,000 people. A study in contrasts, Berkeley is a small town with a big city character. With its world-renowned university, global population and rich diversity of cultural arts, Berkeley reflects and affects the rest of the country.

Sports fans can see it all in the Bay Area - professional football (San Francisco 49ers, Oakland Raiders), professional basketball (Golden State Warriors), professional baseball (San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics), professional hockey (San Jose Sharks) and outstanding collegiate com-petition (six Division I schools).

SIMPLY ThE BEST

T here is no other way to aptly describe America’s top public university. There is no other way to describe one of the elite academic settings

in the world – especially one that also includes one of America’s most successful athletic departments.

The University of California blends the best of all worlds. Overlooking the scenic San Francisco Bay and ranked as the nation’s top public university by the U.S. News and World Report, the flagship campus of the state of California also features an athletic program that annu-ally finishes among the leaders in the Directors’ Cup standings, which rates the overall success of America’s collegiate athletic departments.

Cal attracts what many believe to be the finest applicant pool in the United States. The university features a diverse student body population. The University of California offers 351 degree programs, and 35 of the school’s 36 graduate programs are ranked among America’s Top 10. Cal’s 35 programs among the Top 10 is No. 1 among all universi-ties in the country, as is its 32 “distinguished” programs, as rated by the National Research Council.

The library is ranked third in the country, as judged by the Association of Research Libraries with 10 million volumes in 32 campus libraries.

The faculty features seven Nobel Laureates, 135 members of the National Academy of Sciences, 28 Mac-Arthur Fellows, 74 Fulbright Scholars, four Pulitzer Prize winners and more Guggenheim Fellows (359) than any other university in America.
