Tupper, the Bryant University bulldog mascot, was named after Earl Tupper, president and founder of the

Tupperware Corpora-tion. Mr. Tupper donated his 220-

acre Smithfield farmestate to what was then

Bryant College on October24, 1967. Tupper, who had

originally planned to sell hisestate, was so impressed

with Bryant that he decided todonate the land instead, allowing

Bryant to move from its original locationon Providence’s East Side to its current

Smithfield, R.I. residence.

Originally nicknamed the Indians, Bryant became the Bulldogs in 1995. Out of appreciation for Earl Tupper and his generosity, when the school made the move,Tupper the Bulldog was born.

Hon. Ronald K. MachtleyBryant University President U

nder the leadership of President Ronald K.Machtley, Bryant University has evolved intoone of the most progressive and leading in-

stitutions of higher learning in New England.

Hardly a president who remains behind thescenes when it comes to intercollegiate athletics,Machtley — a former collegiate student-athlete inhis own right — has been an ardent supporter ofBulldog sports since becoming the University’sseventh president in 1996.

Mr. Machtley’s “New Century Plan For Excellence”initiated the most significant enhancements to theBryant campus and community since the univer-sity’s move to Smithfield, and athletics was no ex-ception. His New Century Plan saw the Bulldogs’varsity athletics program expand to 22 teams withthe addition of football, field hockey, men’s andwomen’s lacrosse, and in 2005 men’s andwomen’s swimming.

The addition of the new varsity programs broughtabout an overhaul of the university’s athletics fa-cilities as well. These renovations are highlightedby the construction of Bulldog Stadium, whichserves as the home of the Bryant football, soccerand lacrosse teams, as well as state-of-the-artfields for baseball, softball and field hockey.Changes to Bulldog athletics also inspired andsupported the introduction of the Wellness Center, which provides Bryant with a health and fitnesscenter that is second to none.

Before assuming the presidency at Bryant in Juneof 1996, Mr. Machtley was best known as one ofRhode Island’s leading public servants. He served

as a member of the United States House of Rep-resentatives from 1988 to 1995 and was a mem-ber of the House Armed Services Committee. Hewas also the ranking Republican on the Small Busi-ness Committee’s Minority Enterprise, Finance andUrban Development Subcommittee and co-founder of the first House Working Group on Men-tal Health. As a reflection of the esteem in whichhis congressional colleagues held him, Mr. Macht-ley was elected president of his congressional classduring each of his terms in the House.

Upon completion of his term in Congress, Mr.Machtley served as a partner in the internationaltelecommunications law firm Wilkinson, Barker,Knauer & Quinn in Washington, D.C. He is admit-ted to practicing law in Rhode Island, Massachu-setts and Florida.

President Machtley is a 1970 graduate of theUnited States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. Heearned a juris doctorate from Suffolk University in1978 and served on active duty in the UnitedStates Navy. Mr. Machtley also completed 25 yearsof service as a captain in the U.S. Naval Reserves. He was a member of the board of visitors of theUnited States Naval Academy from 1992 to 1995and currently serves on the boards of several cor-porations, as well as on the boards of many civicand charitable organizations.

President Machtley and his wife, Kati, have twochildren and reside on the Bryant campus withtheir two dogs, Sandy and Paddington. Their son,Todd, is an undergraduate at Muhlenberg College.Their daughter, Erin, graduated from Villanova Uni-versity in 1998.

In its first year of Division I competition, the Bryant University volleyball programdid more than just hold its own — the

2008 Bulldogs proved that they are wherethey belong.

And now, in its second year at the pinna-cle of the NCAA ladder, Bryant volleyballmust do it again, and then some.

After a 16-win season last year, earningwins over teams from such conferences asthe Ivy League, the Patriot League, theAmerica East and Bryant’s future home inthe Northeast Conference, opponents willbe looking for revenge in 2009.

But the Bulldogs are also looking to repaysome losses of their own this season, andwith a core of five returning to the ChaceAthletic Center Gymnasium, they arepoised to do just that.

And those returning letterwinners won’t bealone, as head coach Theresa Garlacybrings in a class of four solid rookies tohelp Bryant continue last year’s success atthe Division I level.

But even with a strong class of incomingfreshmen, Garlacy — who sits at 360 careerwins entering her 14th season at the helm— will need to fill the shoes of a trio ofrecord-setting 2008 graduates if the Bull-dogs wish to make a name for themselvesin Division I.

OUTSIDE HITTERReturning to lead the Bulldogs both on thecourt and off, senior co-captain JulieGeonnotti (St. Louis Park, Minn.) will an-chor a front line that remains almostwholly intact from the 2008 season. Geon-notti and the rest of the Bulldogs also wel-come back impact sophomore JazminStoner (Durango, Colo.), who was part of

a freshman class that was integral toBryant’s success in 2008.

Bryant’s returning outside hitters ac-counted for two of the team’s top fourpoint and kill getters in 2008 — Stoner atNo. 3 (331.5, 298) and Geonnotti at No. 4(183.5, 156) — and look to continue tocontribute as much and more with an-other year of collegiate experience undertheir belts.

But the Bulldogs will also welcome versa-tile newcomer Macy Mitravich(Waimanalo, Hawaii) to the outside hit-ter mix. A rookie who is known to createdeadly angles at the net, Mitravich will adda new dimension of arm speed and quick-ness to an already strong line in 2009.

MIDDLE HITTERArguably the Bulldogs’ top offensive player,6-foot-2 sophomore Maria Scocca (Mel-rose, Mass.) returns to anchor the middle.A member of last year’s devastating fresh-man trio, Scocca is always a threat tothwart opposing attacks with her longarms and superior blocking skills, leadingthe team with 127 blocks (24 solo, 103 as-sists) in 2008. Scocca also led the 2008Bulldogs in nearly every offensive category, including kills (343) and points (447).

Scocca will be joined in the middle bynewcomer Emily Kaup (Chandler, Ariz.).Standing at an even 6-foot, Kaup’ssmoothness and grace on the court makeher a strong blocker and an offensivethreat from the outset.

RIGHTSIDEJunior co-captain Adrienne Boss (Dracut,Mass.) will be looked upon to come backstrong after missing the second half of hersophomore campaign with a back injury.

Despite playing in just 23 of the Bulldogs’35 matches last year, Boss finished fifth onthe team in kills (148), blocks (30) andpoints (165) and will be expected to upthose numbers with her return to fullhealth. Versatile freshmen Mitravich andKaup could also be called upon to help outat rightside.

SETTERWith the setter position wide open, Gar-lacy welcomes the return of now-seniorAdriana Fuertes (Miramar, Puerto Rico)to join rookie Samantha Whitham (So.Weymouth, Mass.) to compete in aheated battle for the starting spot. But withher experience and success in 2008, Geon-notti will also be looked upon to con-tribute in the setting ranks and fill in at thequarterback role.

Fuertes brings experience and stability tothe position with her solid hands andknowledge of the Bulldog offense whileGeonnotti can call upon her experiencelast season to guide the offense. Whitham, with her aggressive serve and tough men-tality, will look to use her athleticism andfurious work ethic to make an impact ofher own.

DEFENSIVE SPECIALISTAfter losing two defensive-minded seniorsfrom last year’s roster, the Bulldogs throwthe responsibilities to junior Robyn Gard-ner (Longwood, Fla.), who has spent twoseasons improving her defensive game.Poised to take over as libero in 2009, Gard-ner will be looked toward to run the de-fense and push her teammates with herintensity and quickness.

But freshman Rebecca Meyer (Commack,N.Y.) will be in the mix defensively, too, with quickness and dedication of her own.

MEET THE COACHES

14th season Providence College ’88HEAD COACH

After enjoying a period of unparalleled success at the Divi-sion II level under head coach Theresa Garlacy, the BryantUniversity volleyball program proved it could — and would

— fare just as well at the highest level of NCAA competition in itsinaugural year of Division I play in 2008.

In 2008, in her 13th year of coaching at Bryant, Garlacy guided herBulldogs to a 16-19 record against a slate of proven Division I op-ponents, coming up with big wins against teams from not justthe Northeast Conference, but programs from the Patriot League, the Ivy League and the America East as well, all the while settingprogram and season records along the way.

During the 12 seasons prior to Bryant’s move to Division I, Garlacyled the Bulldogs to 10 NCAA Division II tournament appearances(including berths in the last nine seasons), an ECAC champi-onship, five Northeast-10 Conference regular-season titles andseven appearances in the conference championship match, claim-ing five tournament titles.

In 2007, Bryant's final season in Division II, the Bulldogs went outwith a bang, winning not just the North-

east-10 Conference regular-season titlewith a perfect 14-0 conference record

(32-13 overall), but also capturingthe program's fifth Northeast-10Conference tournament champi-onship and 10th berth into theNCAA tournament, making it tothe 2007 Sweet 16.

Garlacy has accrued a myriadof accomplishments andmilestones during her storiedcareer, including recordingthe program’s 700th victoryduring the 2007 season.

Garlacy notched her 100thcareer victory in 1999 — justfour years into her headcoaching career. Four yearslater, she earned win No. 200,

following that with victory No.300 on September 15, 2006.

Garlacy enters 2009 boasting a ca-

reer coaching record of 360-159 (.694), with a final Division IImark of 344-140. She left Division II ranked No. 24 in winningpercentage and No. 26 in career victories among active coachesand is the 17th most winningest coach in DII history. Garlacyleaves the NE-10 ranked second all-time in career wins.

Garlacy has been involved with all 10 of Bryant's NCAA appear-ances, nine as head coach and one as an assistant.

In just her second season as Bryant's head coach, Garlacy wasrecognized as the 1997 Northeast-10 Conference Coach of theYear after leading the Bulldogs to a 28-13 record and an NCAAtournament appearance.

BULLDOGS IN THE HALL OF FAME

The Bulldog women’s volleyball program inducted its seventh member into the Bryant Athletics Hall of Fame in2008 in standout Bunmi Akinnusotu, who joined a select group that has seen three former players inducted inthe past four years. During her career at Bryant, Akinnusotu was a dominant force at the net and still stands sec-ond all-time in total blocks and block assists. She is currently fourth all-time with 161 blocks in a single seasonand finished her career with 160 solo blocks (No. 3), 339 block assists (No. 2) and 499 total career blocks (No.

2) from 1999-2002. Akinnusotu is still ranked fifth all-time in kills (1434) and seventh in both matches played (155) and sets played(538). Standing first all-time in career hitting percentage at a .355 clip, Akinnusotu is also among the program’s most decorated alum-nae. Named the Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year in 2002, Akinnusotu earned three first team all-conference honors andthree all-region selections — including two first-team honors — over her four-year career. To this day, Akinnusotu still ranks in the NE-10’s top-10 in career kills, hitting percentage and blocks. She was the recipient of Bryant's Omar Shareef Spirit Award and NCAAWoman of the Year while also being named Bryant's 2001 Female Athlete of the Year and receiving both the 2003 Jim Thorpe Ath-letic Award and the 2000 Peggy Stone Emerging Leader Award.

Bunmi Akinnusotu, Class of 2003

A four-year member of the Bryant women’s volleyballteam from 1994 to 1997, Jennifer Carvalho enters theHall of Fame as one of the top setters in program his-tory. A native of East Providence, R.I. and graduate ofEast Providence High School, Carvalho made an im-mediate impact with the Bulldogs since first steppingonto campus. Carvalho opened her career by earning1994 Northeast-10 and AVCA regional Freshman of theYear honors and concluded her illustrious run with aBryant Athlete of the Year distinction as a senior in1998. During her career, she was a two-time North-east-10 All-Conference selection (1996, 1997) andearned AVCA All-Northeast Region honors in 1997. Theschool’s third-ranked career assists leader (4,702), Carvalho ranks in the pro-gram’s top-20 in career service aces (178), career digs (1,043), career total blocks(178) and career sets played (481). Team captain as a senior and member of theCaptains’ Council, Carvalho led the Bulldogs to a 99-47 overall record during herfour-year career.

Meribah Dean clearly has all of the requisite athleticcredentials to be enshrined with the elite Bryant stu-dent-athletes in history. Dean was a Second Team All-Northeast-10 Conference selection and an AVCAAll-Northeast Region pick in 1994 before capping offher playing career by becoming the third player in pro-gram history to earn NE-10 Player of the Year honors in1995. Her senior season saw her establish the Bulldogs’single-season hitting percentage record — a mark thatstood until 2001 — while she currently stands fourthon the career kills chart (1,487). But Dean’s career was

about so much more than volleyball. Dean, Bryant’s NCAA Woman of the Year, served as the head student athletic trainer in her senior year and was a memberof both the Captains’ Council and the Committee on Sexual Assault.

The Bryant volleyball program had been successful forquite some time through the late 1980s. But with thearrival of a freshman from Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, in1991, the Bulldogs enjoyed an unprecedented level ofprosperity that carries on to this day. Maria Bras quicklyestablished herself as one of the top players in theNortheast-10 Conference after earning the league’sFreshman of the Year award in 1991. In that rookie sea-son, she led the Bulldogs to their first regular-seasonconference championship. Bras spearheaded the mostsuccessful season in Bryant volleyball history as a sen-

ior in 1994, when she carried the Bulldogs to the Round of 16 in the NCAA tour-nament, completing a four-year stretch in which the Bulldogs were a combined116-39. She finished her career with 2,045 kills, good for No. 2 all-time, and wasthe first player in school history with more than 1500. She had an incredible 16triple-doubles in the 1992 season with 24 in her career and was an all-tourna-ment selection in every tournament in which she played in her four years. Bryant’sFemale Athlete of the Year in 1994 and 1995, Bras ranks No. 2 in points scoredin program history (2,487).

Every Bryant varsity women’s sports program owes adebt of gratitude to Lorraine Hudak. When Hudakjoined the Bryant staff in 1977, the women’s athleticsprograms consisted of just three sports — and Hudakwas the coach of all three. But over the course of just sixyears, Bryant more than doubled its sponsorship of var-sity women’s sports and was enjoying success that be-lied just how young those programs were. As anadministrator, she was well ahead of the curve as well, serving as women’s athletics director in a time wheresuch positions weren’t prevalent on college campuses.

Perhaps best known as the architect of women’s volleyball at Bryant, Hudak ledher squad to an 18-2 record in just its third season of existence, and her teams reg-istered five consecutive 20-win seasons through the early 1980s. Today, Bryant’swomen’s varsity teams are 11 in number and all are competitive at the Division Ilevel. And every one of them can point to Lorraine Hudak as the pioneer ofwomen’s athletics at Bryant, the person who put them where they are today.

More than 13 seaons may have passed since the Mid-dletown, Conn. native suited up for the Bulldogs, butNoelle Emmette's name still stands among the all-timeBulldog greats. During her outstanding career from1988 to 1991, Emmette garnered three all-conferencehonors and was not only named the 1988 conferenceRookie of the Year, but closed out her career as theNortheast-10 Conference Player of the Year in 1991. Asa senior, Emmette helped lead Bryant to a perfect 8-0conference record and 26-6 mark overall. That year, shepaced the Bulldogs with 379 kills and hit an astound-ing .330 offensive. In addition, her .917 hitting percentage in a win over NewHampshire College remains a record today — one that will be hard to top.

Noelle EmmetteClass of 1992

In the long and storied history of Bryant Universitywomen's volleyball, former standout Marcie Monaco'sname shines as one of the best of all time. The 1998Northeast-10 Conference Tournament Co-Most Valu-able Player, Monaco is second all-time in career serviceaces (326), fifth all-time in most attacks in a season(1,478), fifth in career digs (1,764) and ninth all-time incareer points. She is ranked fifth all-time in Northeast-10 Conference history with 1,764 career digs and is sec-ond with 326 career service aces. Monaco was integralin taking the Bulldogs to the program’s second ECACchampionship as a senior in 1998 after leading Bryant to a conference tourna-ment title the same year. She guided the Bulldogs to an NCAA tournament berthin 1997 as well as an NE-10 regular-season title in 1995.
