Going beyond the ballpark and into our community.
2 0 0 9 A N N U A L R E P O R T
For more than 50 years, the Baltimore Orioles have worked hard to give back to the local community, becoming involved in a variety of area programs and initiatives. Through OriolesREACH, the team seeks opportunities to reach out to our neighbors and help our fans improve their daily lives. In addition to partnering with existing charities and organizations, the Orioles have also established a collection of initiatives under the current ownership group. This book serves as a brief summary of some of the efforts that have taken place during the past year both in the community and at Oriole Park.

Player and Mascot Appearances
One of the best examples of the Orioles reaching out into the community is when Orioles players themselves appear at various functions and events in our
neighborhoods. Even the Oriole Bird has “flown” to over 200 destinations in the community since the 2008 season. This year, fans have had the opportunity to meet their favorite players including Brian Roberts, Nick Markakis, Adam Jones, and Aubrey Huff, as well as several new
Orioles including Nolan Reimold, Brad Bergesen and Matt Wieters, at locations throughout Birdland. To find out where your favorite current or former Orioles are appearing next, visit OriolesREACH.com and click on “Community Calendar.”
Summer Reading Program
The Orioles teamed with the Maryland State Department of Education for the 2009 Summer Reading Club, a program designed to encourage and reward area youth who commit to reading throughout the summer. Beginning in June, children from elementary school age through high school were ableto register at any Maryland Public Library and receive a Reading Logthat guided them through the summer reading program. Kids who complete the Reading Log will receive prizes including free tickets toan Orioles home game. Over the last two years, more than 150,000 students participated in the Summer Reading Program.

Breakfast Breaks Program
For the 2008-09 school year, the Orioles and Baltimore Ravens joined forces with Baltimore City Schools to create the Breakfast Breaks program. The program provides thousands of less fortunate city school students with boxed breakfasts, each branded with logos and fun activities from the teams.
Learning with the Orioles
OriolesREACH teamed up with Baltimore City Public Schools this year to launch “Learning with the Orioles,” a comprehensive summer learning program teaching math, reading, science and social studies skills to nearly 14,000 students at 84 city public elementary and middle schools.
Written by City Schools teachers and Child First Authority, Inc. curriculum specialists, the program blends skills from each academic discipline for each grade level with facts and
games related to the Orioles and baseball. It represents a new style of curriculum for City Schools, one that integrates several different academic subjects into a program that is educational, fun and includes enrichment activities, including a visit to Camden Yards at the end of the summer session.
In recognition of participating students, the Orioles provided more
than 7,000 complimentary tickets and welcomed 150 students to join City School CEO Dr. Andres A. Alonso in a pre-game ceremony at Oriole Park. Current and former players and the Oriole Bird have also made appearances at schools in Baltimore City, and the organization has recognized outstanding City Schools teachers and students in pre-game ceremonies at Camden Yards.

for the Cure
OriolesREACH, in conjunction with Major League Baseball and Susan G. Komen for the Cure, celebrated Mother’s Day at Oriole Park with special pre-game ceremonies featuring the local winner of the ‘Honorary Bat Girl’ contest. The nationwide campaign was designed to raise awareness and support for the annual Going to Bat Against Breast Cancer program, a joint program between MLB and Komen for the Cure, the world’s largest breast cancer organization. The local winner of the contest was Cathy Greer, a 51-year-old mother of three from Hollywood, Maryland, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000 at the age of 42. Orioles outfielder Nick Markakis, whose mother survived breast cancer, was part of a celebrity panel that took part in voting for Honorary Bat Girl winners.

Orioles Celebrate Memorial Day with Military
Appreciation Day
To celebrate Memorial Day, the Orioles hosted several events at Oriole Park to honor those who proudly serve our country through military service. The Orioles teamed with AT&T’s Cell Phones for Soldiers program and the Maryland National Guard’s A Taste of Home in a ceremony prior to the afternoon game against the Blue Jays. Orioles and AT&T representatives collected hundreds of cell phones to be donated to military families. Also, AT&T donated 60,000 prepaid phone cards to the Taste of Home organization, a group that provides physical and emotional support to Maryland’s sons and daughters stationed overseas.
The team also honored two winners of the Army Child, Youth and School Services essay contest, “What does it mean to you to be a military child?” Carolyn Mason, age 9 from the Aberdeen Area Youth Center,
and Brianna Lloyd, age 8 from the Edgewood Youth Center were honored in a pre-game ceremony. The Orioles also provided 200 tickets to military families for that day’s game.
In a special first pitch ceremony, a Maryland National Guard Unit presented the Orioles with a framed photo and an American flag that was flown in Afghanistan as a thank you for the team’s donation of hats to the children of Afghanistan.

with Benson’s Battalion
Fulfilling a commitment made when he was traded to the Orioles in 2006, former Orioles pitcher Kris Benson and his wife Anna joined the Orioles Charitable Foundation to donate a total of $250,000 to Baltimore charities and the Baltimore City Police Department in two pre-game ceremonies the weekend of April 24 and 25 at Oriole Park. Benson, now a member of the Texas Rangers, and his wife created the Benson’s Battalion Foundation after the tragic events of September 11, 2001. The goal of the Foundation is assist local police, fire and public safety organizations in the fight against terrorism by purchasing the equipment needed in this effort. As part of the trade, the Orioles arranged for a charity bonus to be distributed in conjunction with the Orioles Charitable Foundation to Baltimore-area police, fire and public safety organizations.
The Bensons and the Orioles Charitable Foundation presented a $125,000 joint donation to be divided among the following Baltimore charity groups: The Run to Remember Fund, benefiting the Baltimore City Fire and Police Departments; The Nephcure Foundation; the Johns Hopkins Bipolar Center at Bayview; St. Vincents Center; Shannon’s Fund at the University of Maryland Medical Center; and the Casey Cares Foundation.

In 2008, the Orioles and OriolesREACH established Shannon’s Fund, a $50,000 endowment at the University of Maryland Medical Center to provide financial assistance to hospital patients and their families. Created in memory of Shannon Obaker – the team’s Director of Community Outreach who bravely fought cancer for over a year before passing away in January 2007 at age 29 – Shannon’s Fund is administered by the University of Maryland Medical Center. Funds are donated to patients and their family members as need arises to assist with the general expenses associated with the treatment process, including hospital parking, alternate housing, food costs and household bills.
People who knew Shannon knew of her passion for helping others, especially children and animals. In her role as Community Outreach Director, Shannon coordinated charitable donation requests, scheduled player appearances in the community and arranged special visits for sick children who wanted to meet their baseball heroes. The Orioles and the Obaker family believe that the
most meaningful way to remember Shannon is to reach out to help others because that is what Shannon cared about most.
The Orioles will continue to contribute to the Fund via proceeds collected from future charitable endeavors and OriolesREACH initiatives. Those wishing to make contributions in Shannon’s memory can visit OriolesREACH.com and click on “Donate to Shannon’s Fund.” Or, make checks payable to Orioles Charitable Foundation and use the enclosed return envelope.
