2 The Carriage House Community Table 2009 Annual Report
Andrea had long golden hair in a braid, wasmissing her front teeth, and loved pink. She drew me pictures of rainbows and horses while her momand I talked about their lives.
Andrea and her mom and dad were homeless. The family got stranded here on their way to live with
family back East, but once their car broke down they were left with limited choices. They were camping
high up in the mountains, afraid that if they were found outside with a six year old, the child would be
taken away. Andrea was well cared for, well fed, and up to date with doctor visits and immunizations, but
her parents were unable to fnd work.
We worked to enroll Andrea in school and soon after she star ted, CHCT got a call on our voicemail
praising Andrea for being a great student. (Her mom didnt have any other phone number to leave as acontact for the school.) Our donors and volunteers suppor ted the family by donating lots of pink cloth-
ing, outdoor gear, and toys. We helped the dad by giving him access to voice mail, interview clothing, and
bus tokens. He found a job in two days. The family worked hard to save money and soon was able to
save enough to be eligible for Emerges emergency shelter. CHCT worked with some local churches to
help the family with a housing deposit. They now have a place to live.
This story says a lot about the family, the Boulder community, and The Carriage House Community Table.
The family sought help and worked hard to get where they are today. Volunteers in the community
came together to support them. We coordinated with several other agencies to get this family
employment and housing. Its the example where everything went right.
And while this story sticks out in my mind when I think of 2009, there are so many other stories of
success and community that happen at The Carriage House Community Table. Despite the dramatic
increase in homelessness, we continue to serve food, give people access to medical care, and provide
employment support on a daily basis to everyone who asks for help. Our services have adapted to the
increase in families like Andreas coming through our doors, but were still all about one thing: community.
Ours is a place of community and respect. Your place in that community as a suppor ter, volunteer, and
advocate is vital. We really couldnt have helped Andrea and her family or any of the other 3,500
people that came through our doors last year without you. Thank you so much for your thousands of
volunteer hours, heaps of donations, and considerable number of dollars. Together we opened the door
for Andrea and hundreds of others to a world of more oppor tunity.
With thanks,
Joy Eckstine

our
stories
Their amazing stories keep getting better and betterAs one of The Carr iage House Community Tables newest client interns, I was thrilled
when I was asked to follow up with previous shared personal stories of two former
clients, Tory and Jeff, to nd out, Where are they now?
I not only found inspiration and hope from their success, but the genuine gratitude they
have towards The Carriage House Community Table for the kind, caring, and dedicated
support they received was truly heartfelt.
Melodie
Tory
Tory is a recovering heroin and pain pills addict who continues to work successfully
with the Methadone program. She is looking forward to celebrating her third year in
sobriety. Tory nds inspiration in her 19-month-old daughter, Isabella, as she embarks
on her journey through sobriety and to her dreams.
Tory enjoys and is grateful for her new position in retail sales. She was the only
one from a seasonal employment team to be offered a permanent position. She
and Isabella continue to grow and blossom from the love given to them by Isabellas
father.
Jeff
Jeff is humbly treading his way down the Yellow Brick Road to happiness. Formerly
homeless, Jeff has found comfor t in the strides that he has so diligently made over
the last few months. He works at King Soopers here in Boulder and yet, he still
takes time to give back to The Carr iage House Community Table every Friday.
Jeff is really excited about his upcoming paid vacation. He is planning to wanderaimlessly through the Rocky Mountain. National Park in search of a peaceful and
spiritual experience. Jeff is also looking forward to getting back in touch with his
medical work experience.

In the past year, we have created a client internship program where clients work at the Carriage House or atour evening dinners in return for a small stipend, a chance to develop job skills, and an employment reference. The internships helps the clients on their path to self-sufciency by providing them with resources and skills, while at the same time giving our staff more time to serve an increasing number of clients. Most heartening ofall, this internship mobilizes the desire that so many of our clients have to give back to The Carr iage HouseCommunity Table. The loyalty to the community our organization has built is erce. Our client interns come andgo regularly as their circumstances change, but we are grateful to all of them for their hard work and inspiration.

cook for hundreds, clean thousands of dirty
dishes, perform acupuncture, play music,
donate clothing, and teach ar t
lessons. They give hugs, a shoulder to cry on,
and unending words of comfort. Some of
the teams that serve dinners have been
volunteering for more than thirteen years.
Weve got loads of volunteer stories that have touched us over the last year.
Here are just a few we want to share with you:
An Eagle Scout troop organized a collection of outdoor gear and brought it to the Carriage House
the rst snowy day last October. A twelve-year-old girl brought a box of several dozen cupcakes that she had made from scratch,
decorated and arranged so beautifully we could have all sworn they came from a top-notch bakery.
A new volunteer, at work for no more than ten minutes, saw a man whose feet were freezing and,
after helping the man take off his boots, rubbed his feet until they were warm.
A rst-grade class from a local elementary school organized a clothing drive and brought
four carloads of coats, boots, and blankets to our door.
A member of our board who comes to Carriage House to cook once a week witnessed a
clients distress at having lost the most recent Harry Potter book. While staff was calming the
woman down, he went to the bookstore and bought her a new one.
A volunteer drove a client in need of medical attention to the hospital because the client
didnt want to have an ambulance bill that he couldnt pay. A group of volunteers from the Kiwanis Club spent an entire weekend painting the inside
of the Carriage House (greasy kitchen walls included).
The Carriage House Community Table
works because of our volunteers.
Over 300 volunteers give thousands of hours of
service. While volunteering at The Carriage House
Community Table is not always glamorous, it is often
fun and fullling.
If you would like to get involved with our
community by volunteering your time,
please let us know by e-mailing us at
or by calling us at (303) 442-8300.
