The Vision

In 2009, the Radiological Society of North America

(RSNA) named a new executive director and launched

bold new initiatives to help its members remain top

performers in their field and to help transform the science

and practice of radiology, ushering in a new era of medical

care that is more efficient, more accessible and more

patient-centered.

NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

In April 2009, Mark G. Watson became the Society’s

executive director. He had served RSNA in a variety of

capacities for almost 20 years, including interim executive

director and assistant executive director for finance and

administration.

In naming Watson, the Board recognized his history of

distinguished service with RSNA as well as his ability to

provide the good counsel and effective leadership needed

to realize the promise of RSNA’s future.

The Challenge

When the Board updated its strategic plan, it added an

important new goal—to shape and advance the future

of radiology. This new goal encompasses a variety of

objectives:

• Convening radiology thought leaders to articulate a

vision for the future of the specialty

• Increasing awareness and stimulating the pursuit of

cutting-edge developments and research opportunities

vital to radiology’s future

• Preparing professionals in the radiologic sciences for

an increasingly quantitative future

• Advancing the frontiers of radiology informatics

At the 2009 RSNA annual meeting, RSNA President Gary

J. Becker, M.D., called upon the radiologic community

to advance the specialty through education and quality

improvement programs. “What you do not measure,

you cannot know,” Dr. Becker said in his president’s

address. “If you do not know, you cannot improve. It

is time for radiology to move more aggressively into

measurement and the quantitative applied science of

quality improvement.”

RSNA measured up by delivering the tools, resources and

solutions to enable each professional to answer the call to

excellence.

UNPRECEDENTED CONTINUING EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES

In addition to the thousands of continuing medical

education (CME) credits available at RSNA 2009—up to

90.75 for each physician—RSNA provided 66,121 CME

certificates through RadioGraphics, InteractED® and

online self-assessment modules (SAMs). One hundred

institutions registered to use the online RSNA/APDR

Resident Learning Portfolio, introduced to help residents

and program coordinators document growth and progress

as physicians.

RSNA debuted My Professional Learning Map, an

online tool that lets members design and meet their

own educational goals based on a practice-specific,

personalized action plan.

RSNA continued to offer programs for researchers

pursuing federal funding, such as Writing a Competitive

Grant Proposal, Advanced Course in Grant Writing and

the NIH Grantsmanship Workshop. Programs including

the RSNA Clinical Trials Methodology Workshop and

Introduction to Academic Radiology helped members

gain essential skills for developing protocols and pursuing

careers in research and academia.

QUALITY URGED IN EVERY FACET OF PRACTICE

New Quality Storyboards in the Lakeside Learning Center

at the RSNA annual meeting demonstrated successful

quality improvement efforts in areas including workflow

efficiency, safeguards against wrong patient/wrong

procedure, dose reduction, safety coaching and reducing

the need for sedation in children. Via the Quality tab

at RSNA.org, RSNA offered resources for radiologists

planning quality improvement projects, tools to help

identify and address areas for improvement, information

on quality-focused education programs through RSNA and

other institutions, performance measurement guidelines

and data for comparative analyses.

The Authority

RSNA was at the helm of rigorous, patient-focused

scientific and technological initiatives.

In the summer of 2009, the National Institute of

Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) awarded

RSNA a $4.7 million contract to design and launch an

Internet-based network for patient-controlled sharing

of medical images. The network will potentially reduce

redundant examinations, minimize patient radiation

exposure and enable better informed medical decisions.

The goal of the project is to provide patients with the

interoperability necessary for easy, secure access to

medical data and control of their medical information, said

principal investigator David S. Mendelson, M.D., co-chair

of RSNA’s Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE®)

initiative.

RSNA’s efforts in the quantitative imaging and biomarkers

arena continued to gain strength. The one-year-old

Quantitative Imaging Biomarkers Alliance (QIBA)

broke new ground, developing roadmaps for integrating

biomarker evaluation into research and practice. Imaging

Biomarkers Roundtables were held in the spring and fall

at RSNA Headquarters, aiming to coordinate stakeholders’

plans for various imaging modalities and disease-specific

imaging biomarkers, and the Toward Quantitative

Imaging: Reading Room of the Future exhibit debuted at

RSNA 2009.

RSNA’s Revitalizing the Radiology Research Enterprise

(RRRE) program hosted a workshop at RSNA

Headquarters for department leaders in radiology,

radiation oncology and nuclear medicine to develop

strategies for expanding research at their institutions.

Professionals gathered at RSNA Headquarters in April

for “Patient-Centered Radiology: Use It or Lose It,” a

workshop designed to teach attendees how to present the

concept of providing care from a patient’s perspective to

their institutions, local and regional societies, subspecialty

meetings and other forums. The session included

information on new patient care models being promoted

by other medical specialties and how they affect radiology,

as well as news about the American College of Radiology’s

“Face of Radiology” campaign.

THE COMMUNITY

RSNA’s publications, communications and collaborative

presentations reached an increasingly diverse network of

members across the globe.

MEMBERSHIP EXCEEDS 44,000

RSNA membership grew in 2009 to an all-time high of

44,118 members in 124 countries. This includes a record

9,132 members in Europe, Asia, South America, Australia

and Africa.

RSNA PUBLICATIONS SET THE STANDARD FOR SCIENCE,

EDUCATION AND NEWS

RSNA’s peer-reviewed journals—celebrating their 10th

year online—and award-winning member newsmagazine

enriched readers’ experience with more features than

ever before.

Radiology’s education journal RadioGraphics was

cited 5,932 times and had an impact factor of 3.095.

RadioGraphics Online added to the learning experience

with articles published ahead of print, online CME tests,

full-text and subspecialty searches and RSS feeds.

With an impact factor of 5.996, Radiology remained the

leading general radiology journal. Radiology articles were

cited 44,847 times, according to ISI Web of Knowledge

Journal Citation Reports®. Radiology continued to add new

online dimensions for enhanced learning and discussion,

including monthly “Hear What We Think” podcasts that

highlight recent journal articles and provide additional

insights into their context and signficance.

RSNA announced plans to unveil the Radiology Legacy

Collection, a searchable electronic archive of Radiology

issues from 1923 to 1998. The Collection, available

exclusively to RSNA members and subscribers beginning

in Spring 2010, will be an invaluable resource for

researchers and historians. The Collection will include

keyed metadata to facilitate searches, and each image has

been scanned individually for optimal resolution.

In its 19th year, RSNA News addressed timely topics

such as simulation technology, the impact of economic

recession on the healthcare system and how the medical

isotope shortage affects nuclear medicine. With RSNA

News online, members can search and bookmark issues

via myRSNA, view videos and online-only features with

RSNA News Extras, read the News directly from their

inboxes with monthly e-mail alerts and hear radiologists

discuss relevant topics in their own words with “Listen In.”

2010 will be a milestone year for RSNA News. At RSNA

2009, longtime R&E Foundation Contributing Editor Robert

E. Campbell, M.D., turned over the reins to C. Leon Partain,

M.D., Ph.D., and David M. Hovsepian, M.D., succeeded

Bruce L. McClennan, M.D., as editor.

Each issue in 2010 will celebrate the newsmagazine’s

20th anniversary, and a new design will be unveiled in

March 2010.

ELECTRONIC UPDATES DELIVER INSTANT INFORMATION

RSNA continued to keep members in the know with

electronic communications, including time-sensitive

monthly E-Reminders and RSNA Weekly news in addition

to audience-specific communications such as R|F Buzz

for residents and fellows, myRSNA Tips and Tools and

QIBA Quarterly. In 2009, RSNA launched an electronic

communication to link members with the Daily Bulletin, the

official newspaper of the RSNA annual meeting.

RSNA GETS SOCIAL

RSNA used Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn to expand

its reach in 2009, posting links to journal articles, grant

information, photos, videos and much more. Buzz about

the hottest topics and events in radiology teemed at the

annual meeting, where attendees, staff, exhibitors and the

press “tweeted” their news and posted their information

and best wishes on the Facebook page, which has gained

more than 2,600 fans since its inception in June 2008.

RSNA’s Twitter page, launched in May 2009, now has

more than 1,000 followers.

PUBLIC OUTREACH EMPOWERS PATIENTS

RadiologyInfo.org, the RSNA/American College of

Radiology public information site, received more than

548,000 visits per month. The site was regularly

mentioned in news articles, directing readers to the site

for more information about radiology. RadiologyInfo.org

was honored with two awards—the Gold Award for Best

Health/Health Care site in the eHealthcare Leadership

Awards competition and a merit certificate from the Health

Information Resource Center’s (HIRC) Web Health Awards

competition.

RSNA continued its participation in “60-Second Checkup”

audio programs, with 52 programs airing on radio stations

throughout the U.S. in 2009.

At the annual meeting, RSNA hosted 15 news conferences,

including one that offered expert commentary about the

U.S. Preventive Services Task Force’s controversial new

mammography screening guidelines that recommend

women wait until age 50 to begin annual mammography

screening. “Although not perfect, mammography is

the best we have in early detection of breast cancer,”

Stephen Feig, M.D., told reporters from local, national

and international news media outlets. “Twenty percent of

breast cancer deaths in the U.S. are in women who were

diagnosed in their 40s.”

Throughout the year, press releases publicizing studies

from Radiology were distributed to the medical news

media. Through its media relations activities, RSNA saw

more than 8,400 placements in broadcast, print, radio and

online media, with an audience of more than 5.7 billion.

COLLABORATION STRENGTHENS BONDS AMONG SPECIALTIES

RSNA continued its collaborations inside and outside of

radiology to help make healthcare more efficient, patient-

focused and accessible.

RSNA worked with the American Academy of Family

Physicians (AAFP) to present “Radiology and the Family

Physician” at RSNA 2009, a course that explored ways

to build professional bridges by helping radiologists and

family physicians learn what they expect and need from

each other.

The Bolstering Oncoradiologic and Oncoradiotherapeutic

Skills for Tomorrow (BOOST) program delivered courses

designed to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration in

radiology and radiation oncology.

Page 6: 2009 Annual Report

The Associated Sciences Consortium continued to

sponsor refresher courses at the RSNA annual meeting

providing continuing education credits for physicians,

radiologic technologists and other members of the

radiology team. A new course series, ASRT@RSNA 2009,

presented in collaboration with the American Society of

Radiologic Technologists, offered continuing education

credit and explored topics including talking to parents

about radiation safety, customer service in imaging and

the development of breast tomosynthesis.

Physics tutorials co-presented with the American

Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) featured

flat-panel imaging and fluoroscopy systems. RSNA also

collaborated with AAPM to develop and launch online

Physics Modules, designed to educate radiologists and

radiology residents about important concepts in physics

as identified in the AAPM Physics Curriculum. These

modules—in general imaging, radiography, mammography,

fluoroscopy, interventional radiology, CT and image

processing—are self-guided and include self-testing

features to create a comprehensive experience for the

viewer. Additional modules will become available in 2010.

As a member of the Alliance for Radiation Safety in

Pediatric Imaging, RSNA helped spread the word about the

Image Gently campaign, which launched Practice Quality

Improvement modules and other tools to reduce radiation

exposure to children. RSNA will also participate in a new

campaign in 2010 aimed at reducing radiation dose

to adults.

The Tools

RSNA opened channels for the latest technology and

offered unique resources for improving practice efficiency,

sharpening skills and connecting with colleagues.

The IHE Connectathon, hosted by RSNA and the

Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society

(HIMSS) in late February 2009 in Chicago, was attended

by 358 individuals representing 77 vendors who spent

four days testing 126 profiles for compliance with IHE

information sharing standards. The Connectathon offered

a glimpse of new device profiles, progress in partnerships

and the promise of achieving a universal electronic health

record (EHR) in the coming years.

The IHE Image Sharing Demonstration at RSNA 2009,

featuring leading vendors in medical imaging and EHRs,

showed how images and radiology reports can become

part of a patient’s personal health record, available

securely via the Internet to the patient and to authorized

care providers.

The RSNA Medical Imaging Resource Center (MIRC), a set

of free software tools, gave users better control of radiology

research and education. MIRC teaching file software

enabled educators to author, manage, store and share

radiology teaching files. The MIRC Clinical Trials Processor

(CTP) allowed researchers to exchange, index and retrieve

images and documents for imaging clinical trials.

By the end of 2009, more than 25,200 members used

myRSNA as a customized workspace to store, access and

share files, research and bookmark articles and participate

in real-time discussions. New features included file/

bookmark sharing, publicly searchable files/bookmarks,

profile photograph, third-party integration, new journals

and a built-in PowerPoint viewer.

The Forum

In North America and abroad, RSNA set the stage for the

best in science and education.

RSNA 2009 MAKES QUALITY COUNT

The pinnacle of RSNA’s science and education offerings,

the 95th RSNA Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting

convened under the theme “Quality Counts.” Despite

the nation’s fears about economic uncertainty, RSNA

2009 attendance remained very strong. The number of

radiologist attendees reached a record high (15,644),

as did the number of RSNA members (11,058). Overall

professional attendance was 26,363—down just 4 percent

from 2008. International registrants made up one-third of

the total registration of 56,824.

Of the record 10,891 abstracts submitted for presentation

at RSNA 2009, 1,750 were accepted for scientific papers,

712 for scientific posters and 1,735 for education exhibits.

The technical exhibition’s numbers remained among the

highest in history, featuring more than 700 exhibitors for

the 5th consecutive year. Again, the technical exhibition

spanned three halls in the McCormick Place convention

center.

Because of the three-building layout and other ideas to

help exhibitors maximize their appearance at the RSNA

annual meeting, RSNA was named one of 5 Innovators

of 2009 by Association Meetings. The magazine said

the Innovators “were able to look at their meetings with

fresh eyes and find new ways to drive attendance, create

a better educational environment and use the latest

technologies to deliver a better experience for attendees

and exhibitors at their conferences.”

The RSNA Technical Exhibition was also honored by

two other trade publications in 2009. Tradeshow Week

ranked the RSNA Technical Exhibition #1 among medical

tradeshows in the United States and Canada and #37

overall out of the 200 top tradeshows listed. Meanwhile,

Trade Show Executive magazine ranked the RSNA annual

meeting #35 out of “100 shows in 2008 that set the gold

standard for the trade show industry.” The publication

noted RSNA’s record-breaking annual meeting attendance

in recent years, the increasing number of international

abstract submissions, a large number of first-time

exhibitors and RSNA’s use of radiofrequency identification

to track the average number of hours attendees spent

in exhibit halls, total number of exhibit visitors, average

technical exhibit length and total number of visitors per

square foot in each exhibit hall.

THE GREENEST MEETING YET

RSNA continued its commitment to hosting one of the

greenest and cleanest meetings in the industry with a

number of environmentally friendly initiatives, including

conserving energy and water, recycling materials,

reducing waste and making greener purchasing

decisions—such as buying recycled products and printing

materials with soy-based ink. The recycling (diversion)

rate for RSNA 2009 was 74 percent, an increase over the

70 percent diversion rate for RSNA 2008.

continuing series of internationally-themed scientific

sessions with “U.K. Presents” at RSNA 2009. “China

Presents” and “Latin America Presents” are scheduled for

RSNA 2010.

The RSNA information booth made appearances at the

European Congress of Radiology (ECR) in Vienna, the

meeting of the Sociedad Mexicana de Radiologia e Imagen

in Mexico City, the SNM annual meeting in Toronto and the

100th meeting of the Société Française de Radiologie in

Paris.

In 2010, the RSNA booth will travel to ECR in Vienna

and the International Congress of Radiology in Shanghai,

among other locations.

DELIVERING EDUCATION TO THE WORLD

The RSNA International Visiting Professor program,

administered by the RSNA Committee on International

Relations and Education (CIRE), sent North American-based

radiology professors to Argentina, Bolivia, Estonia, Mexico

and South Africa. In 2010, teams will go to the Philippines,

Thailand, Brazil and Mexico.

CIRE continued to sponsor Introduction to Research for

International Young Academics, a seminar at the RSNA

annual meeting designed to encourage young radiologists

from countries outside North America to pursue academic

radiology careers. The Derek Harwood-Nash International

Fellowships, which allow international faculty members

to study at North American institutions, were awarded to

radiologists from Brazil and Turkey.

As in past years, the R&E Research Seed Grant and the

RSNA/AUR/APDR/SCARD Education Research

Development Grant were available to international

researchers, and for the first time the Education Scholar

Grant was extended to applicants outside North America.

The Leadership

RSNA named Sanjiv Sam Gambhir, M.D., Ph.D., an

internationally recognized leader in molecular imaging,

the 2009 Outstanding Researcher. Elliot K. Fishman, M.D.,

recognized for his innovative techniques and career-

long commitment to education, was named the 2009

Outstanding Educator.

Honorary membership was awarded to Lizbeth Kenny,

M.D., FRANZCR, of Brookfield, Australia, Borut Marincek,

M.D., of Zurich, Switzerland, and Ho-Young Song, M.D.,

Ph.D., of Seoul, Republic of Korea.

RSNA’s highest honor, the Gold Medal, was presented to

Gary M. Glazer, M.D., Brian C. Lentle, M.D., and David C.

Levin, M.D.

IN PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE

As Dr. Becker ended his term as RSNA president, he

promised that RSNA would remain in the forefront of

radiology’s efforts to measure and improve performance

and conduct safe and effective imaging and treatment.

“From minimally invasive therapies, to molecular imaging,

to quantitative imaging, it is RSNA’s responsibility to

pursue the best in science and research,” he said.

RSNA 2010 President Hedvig Hricak, M.D., Ph.D., Dr. h.c.,

vows to continue to pursue the use of imaging to advance

personalized medicine. “Integrated diagnostics, in which

imaging plays a vital role, is one of the cornerstones of

this leading-edge paradigm, necessary for implementing

personalized medicine into any healthcare system,”

said Dr. Hricak. “As president of RSNA, I shall carry this

message around the world.”

THORWARTH JOINS RSNA LEADERS

Joining the RSNA Board at the end of 2009 was a

nationally recognized expert on radiology economics

and reimbursement, William T. Thorwarth Jr., M.D. He

will serve as the liaison-designate for publications and

communications under Sarah S. Donaldson, M.D., until

she becomes RSNA Board chairman following RSNA

2010. “We all need to be active, not passive, participants

in crafting the future, and look for opportunities not only

to expand our knowledge and improve our individual

practices but also to ensure our preeminence in the fields

of diagnostic imaging, minimally invasive therapies and

radiation oncology,” said Dr. Thorwarth.

The Foundation

The cornerstone—and the stepping stone—for research

and education funding in the radiologic sciences, the

RSNA Research & Education (R&E) Foundation celebrated

its 25th anniversary in 2009 and the achievement of its

$15 million Silver Anniversary Campaign goal.

Corporations donated and pledged $6.7 million to the

Campaign, launched at RSNA 2005. Private practices

donated another $1.2 million, and individual giving reached

an amazing $7.7 million as individual donors lent their

support.

“So many of radiology’s brightest minds have gotten

their start with RSNA R&E Foundation grants over these

past 25 years,” said Jack E. Price, Foundation Board of

Trustees chair. “As a result, they have received millions in

subsequent funding from the National Institutes of Health

(NIH) and other sources, and have launched outstanding

careers that have led to incredible breakthroughs in the

field,” he said. “It’s wonderful to see that donors have

stepped up to help ensure that radiology education and

research may have a solid foundation for the next 25

years. It’s a great start, and we hope to see this kind of

support continue.”

R&E SUPPORTS PROMISING INVESTIGATORS AND EDUCATORS

The R&E Foundation funded 60 research and education

grants totaling more than $1.6 million in 2009. The

Foundation’s Board of Trustees was pleased to see an

increase in the number of education grant applications

received and funded compared to previous years. A

complete listing of the 2009 grant projects is available at

RSNA.org/Foundation.

25 YEARS OF FUNDING RADIOLOGY’S FUTURE®

Since 1984, the R&E Foundation has funded 760 grant

projects totaling more than $29 million. Surveys indicate

that for every Foundation dollar awarded, recipients have

received more than $30 from other sources, such as NIH,

for subsequent research projects—creating a return on

investment totaling $850 million for radiologic research.
