Getting to Know Beyond the Books Educational Foundation

Beyond the Books Educational Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation whose goal is to provide a long-term, self sustaining financial base to fund innovative academic programs in District 87 and Unit 5 public schools which are beyond the limits of normal tax support. Organized in 1992, the foundation is a group of private citizens and is not part of either school district. The Boards of Education of both districts encouraged the Foundation’s formation and strongly support its efforts.

Welcome!Greetings,Can you imagine playing hide and seek using a GPS device? Or putting together a web based podcast…in Spanish? Or maybe even building a model car that runs on hydrogen? Over the past 18 years, Beyond the Books Educational Foundation (BTBEF) has funded projects that spark learning in innovative and creative ways.

Each year, the educators in Unit 5 and District 87 dream of new and exciting ways to enhance education and they put their dreams into grant applications. BTBEF board members pour over these grants, rank, deliberate, and ultimately select a certain number of grants to fund. Having read these grants for many years, the hardest part is realizing the number of projects that will not be funded because of limited dollars.

Last year, BTBEF initiated a plan to increase its endowment to one million dollars. Reaching this goal would significantly increase the number of projects we are able to support and the number of children who would benefit from these exceptional experiences.

Now we are in the midst of an economic crisis that has made the road to reach one million dollars appear much steeper. As the stock market fluctuates, everyone is wondering what investments will offer the best return. Perhaps we can look a little closer to home. Our children are a long term investment that one day will reflect the quality of their education and the value the community has placed on their future.

If you have already provided support to Beyond the Books Educational Foundation, please accept my sincere thanks on behalf of the current and past board members. If you are just now learning about this amazing Foundation, please consider your gift and allow us to add your name to those listed in this publication. Your gift will provide terrific learning opportunities for today’s children and also for their children and grandchildren. Now that’s what I call an amazing return on investment!

Thank you,Julie PaynePresident, Beyond the Books Educational Foundation
