Our MissionThe UND Foundation fosters a tradition of philanthropic support, leading efforts to raise and manage funds that secure a strong future for the University of North Dakota and its students, faculty and alumni.

Our VisionThe UND Foundation will provide the centralized infrastructure and services to support all private fundraising efforts on behalf of the University of North Dakota. We will act as the University’s designated fundraising organization, partnering with all colleges and units.

In the spirit of stewardship and fiduciary responsibility, we will successfully lead the University through campaigns to grow its endowment and secure a solid financial future that benefits the continued educational and economic development of the state of North Dakota.

Innovative. Creative. Entrepreneurial. Engaging. Visionary. That’s the North Dakota spirit. On Oct. 8, The University of North Dakota through the UND Foundation launched the largest fundraising campaign the University has ever seen. North Dakota Spirit | The Campaign for UND ignited with vigor as more than 2,000 students, faculty, alumni and friends attended “Ignite the Spirit” at UND’s Chester Fritz Auditorium.

There, we announced that $300 million was actively being raised for the University’s educators, students, programs and places. Better yet, more than two-thirds of this goal has already been raised.

In fiscal year 2010, the UND Foundation’s investment portfolio bounced back as the markets began to turn favorably. Because of your spirit, we can report a 150 percent increase in gifts and commitments from fiscal year 2009. In addition, $14.5 million was spent for the benefit of UND – $3 million more than last year. And for the second year in a row, the University boasts a million-dollar gain in scholarship support, with more than $5 million directed at student scholarships!

Your spirit doesn’t go unnoticed. “I think scholarships really

instill a quiet confidence in those students that receive them because then they know that someone has recognized that they have some talent, even though they may not feel it themselves. It gives them that extra little boost that ‘Oh, I think I can do this, and someone else thinks I can do this,’” says Holly Brown-Borg, Ph.D., professor at the UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences.

North Dakota’s spirit is reflected in its extraordinary places. Benedict, ’62, ’63, and Dorothy Gorecki have generously donated $4 million to name the Gorecki Alumni Center, which is tentatively slated to break ground in the spring. Their spirit of support is just one example of the pride we all share for UND and will be reflected in this gateway to campus as current students and alumni alike take advantage of this new facility.

Support to UND in FY10

Gifts given through the UND Foundation annually provide financial support for campus priorities. The support comes primarily from endowed funds invested with the UND Foundation as well as annual cash gifts.

Support to UND through the UND Foundation increased by $3 million over fiscal year 2009. The total amount of scholarships awarded increased by 26 percent.

Financial Highlights

T he UND Foundation’s greatest asset is its investment portfolio. Gifts invested into an endowment make an impact now and in the future, ensuring longevity of donor intent.

The UND Foundation board of directors’ investment committee oversees these funds and provides guidance into investment strategies to maximize benefit to UND and maintain the strength of endowed funds. Of the $14.5 million spent to benefit the University in the fiscal year, 26 percent came from the 4 percent payout on endowments, a percentage determined by our investment committee.
