Celebrating 101 Years of Exercise

Dr. Milton Muelder was instrumental in the creation of the Intramural Sports “Learn to Swim” program.

Through his generosity he has taught thousands of area youth the lifelong skill of swimming. He con-

tinues to swim at IM Sports West almost daily.

The 2009-2010 IM Handbook was produced by Rebecca Kegler and Jody Strank.

Demonstration Hall is the former ice rink before Munn was built in 1974. The Morrill Act of 1862, which established MSU, also called for military instruction. It was at ‘Dem Hall’ that students received training for infantry, cavalry (there used to be a riding arena inside), and artillery. Its 15,725 square feet is now primarily used for:

Club Sports The Sport Club Program is designed for students who have interests and/or skills in sports not routinely offered at Michigan State. When possible, these interests may be explored and established as a club sport in which

students take the lead in organizing, managing, and promoting the club. Club sports will receive administrative guidance and in some cases equipment and facility usage from the Intramural Sports and Recreative Services

department. Participation is completely voluntary and therefore can be purely recreative or a chance to perfect a skill with the intent of travel and competition. Visit the Intramural Sports website and click on the Club Sports

link, then email the specified contact person. Don’t find your sport? Start a Club!

IM Sports Competition & Rules League Competition on a Non-Varsity Level Individual, dual, and team sports are offered each semester. Play can be competitive or choose a non-competitive league where there are no playoffs – just a whole lot of fun. Leagues and Teams can include:

Residence Hall Leagues (All students from one RH) Greek Leagues (All Students from one Fraternity / Sorority) Independent Leagues (Any MSU student regardless of residence) Non-Competitive League (no playoffs) Men’s Teams Women’s Teams Co-Rec Teams Graduate Student / Faculty Teams

Team Entry Procedure / Individual Sport Procedure All members of a team must be current student, faculty, or staff. A representative must attend the team manager’s meeting to obtain rules, guidelines, procedures, and the entry card. Individual students who wish to play on a team should attend the manager’s meeting. Teams may be looking for additional

players or a team can be formed of individuals. Students who do not find a team at this time may sign up on a ”wanted” list. To participate in individual and dual sports, students should go to the main office of the IM East or IM West to pick up entry

forms and general information. Unless specified, a meeting is not required prior to participation. Paid entry forms should be returned to the IM office before the stated deadline to assure inclusion.

Team Managers In general, the team manager’s responsibilities include: Attending the Team Manager’s meeting(s) to obtain forms, rules, and team

entry card(s). Being responsible for correctly filling out the team entry card(s), payment of

team fee(s), and submission of the team entry card to the IM Office. Responsibility for notifying the IM Office / Director of any relevant

information changes including contact phone numbers. Being familiar with the eligibility rules and communicating to each player IM

rules, guidelines, procedures, and team information including game schedule, re-scheduled games, and the consequences of an ineligible player on the team. Representing the team during the games or for any official IM business.

Outdoor Field Safety

Outdoor facilities including Munn, the Ralph Young Outdoor Track, IM East and Vet Med

fields, the Duffy Daugherty football practice field, and the Outdoor Tennis facilities are equipped

with a lightning detection system. If the system detects the possibility of a lightning strike,

one 15 second blast of the horn will occur. All activities should cease and persons should

seek shelter immediately. The ‘all clear’ signal is three shorts blasts of 5 seconds each. Play may resume at this time. During scheduled IM

Sports activities, it is a requirement to comply with the system.

25

The Michigan Victory Games began in 1976 in Detroit traveling to colleges and universities around Michigan over the following years. MSU hosted the National Games in 1986 because of, “An ongoing sensitivity to the needs of students with handicapping characteristics making Michigan State University one of the most accessible campuses in the country,” according to the Michigan Disability Sports

Alliance (MiDSA) archives.

The events are designed for adult athletes with cerebral palsy, traumatic

brain injury, survivors of strokes, and other related conditions. This year’s three-day event in May 2009 included Swimming, Bowling, Cross Country,

Cycling/Handcycling, Powerlifting, Soft Discus, Table Tennis, and Field Events ending with The Big Dance, an evening of celebration. Hosting over 200 athletes and 250 volunteers, the wide variety of events gives those with

special needs access to recreational and competitive sport options.

Team Eligibility Rules The spirit of the rules calls for their most careful consideration. They have been designed to protect the great number of intramural athletes and to ensure them ample opportunity to participate. It is important that all groups observe the rules equally so no one team gains an unfair advantage over others. Therefore, all participants of the competitive program are expected to know the eligibility rules which govern the specific activity and the consequences of an ineligible player for the team. All currently enrolled Michigan State students, faculty, and staff are eligible for participation in the IM competitive programs. Spouses are eligible to participate in only the non-playoff leagues during the academic year (September through May), but may play in any league during the summer session. Both the MSU affiliate and the spouse must play for the same

team. The spouse must have a valid university issued spouse ID card which includes a picture. Women are not eligible for men’s independent playoff teams or vice versa with the exception of soccer and ice hockey. No

more than two members of the opposite sex may be on the field of play at one time. Women may play for a men’s non-competitive team. MSU Alumni are not eligible to play on IM teams. MSU College of Law students are eligible to play however Cooley Law

students are not eligible. The PENALTY for a team using an ineligible player (with intent or not): Team shall lose all contests in which the ineligible per-

son played if the violation is detected (through protest or by officials) before league playoffs begin. If detected during playoffs, the team shall lose only the game in which the player is detected. The win will be awarded to the team that originally lost the game and that team will automatically advance.

Managers allowing violations of any eligibility rules may, themselves, be suspended from participation in any capacity at the Intramural Director’s discretion.

Sportsmanship / Conduct Unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated. Use of harassing language or other behavior that relates to a person’s race, age, sexual orientation, creed, ethnic origin, disability, or political persuasion is not acceptable. Anyone physically or verbally abusing an intramural official will be immediately suspended from further play. In instances where officials or players are threatened or physically abused by spectators, teams identified with the spectators may be suspended indefinitely. Intramural professional staff and student supervisors have the authority and responsibility to penalize, disqualify, and/or eject players engaging in such behaviors if warranted. Participants or spectators ejected from a game are encouraged to meet with the supervising IM Director. At that time, the director will determine the duration of the suspension. For more specific information on who is eligible to play, team managers are advised to read the Eligibility Guidelines for IM Competition on our website www.imsports.msu.edu. Questions may also be directed to the IM Director in charge of the sport.

Alcohol or Illegal Substances It is university policy that alcoholic beverages or other illegal substances not be con-sumed on university recreative areas - indoor and outdoor space alike. Team managers must take responsibility to see that neither players nor spectators carry alcoholic beverages to the facilities. IM Supervisors have the authority to remove participants or forfeit games if substance abuse problems occur.

Health Concerns IM Sports and Recreative Services is concerned with the protection of all participants from injury and infections. Every effort is made to assure the safety and well being of all; this may require the closing of an activity area, stopping a game, or the testing of skills to demonstrate knowledge and abilities. During these times, we ask for your understanding and cooperation; it is, after all, in your best interest that such precautions are taken. Participants should be aware that medical costs incurred by participants must be covered by per sonal insurance. Students not covered by their family’s policy are eligible to purchase the MSU Student Health Insurance Plan. Students wearing glasses should use protective guards or wear special athletic glasses, especially for racquetball. Students who must wear knee braces or other protective gear must have any exposed metal covered with a soft wrap so as to not pose a risk to other participants. Any injury that shows bleeding must be covered completely or the injured party removed from competition. Follow posted safety rules and cooperate with IM personnel when emergency situations exist or are suspected.

Page 10: 2009-2010 Handbook

A safe environment is important to MSU, but the reality is that the risk of harm still remains. To help prepare women, the department offers two different self defense workshops absolutely free. Workshops are regularly scheduled in IM facilities and can be held in residence halls and sorority houses by request. Designed for women, men may attend with the full understanding that this is a serious issue. For more information, contact Angela Michael (517) 432-2661. The Level 1 Workshop Avoiding victim-like behavior Developing verbal and nonverbal communication for confrontation and de-escalation Utilizing basic self defense skills The Level 2 Workshop (after attending Level 1) How to handle an armed attacker Learn new physical techniques and practice full force strikes into

padded bags.

The department’s greatest need is for sports officials. With more than

2,000 games scheduled yearly, student officials play an important role. While previous officiating experience

is an advantage (and previously playing the sport is essential), it’s not

required - training will be provided. Just call the IM Sports facility nearest

you for available positions.

Frank Beeman graduated from Michigan State University in 1943 with a degree in Physical Education and earned a varsity letter as a member of the MSU Tennis Team. He served in the Army during World War II as a paratrooper then returned to MSU as a physical education instructor and men’s tennis coach in 1947. Under Biggie Munn, he was asked in 1948 to direct the Intramural Sports program. By 1951 Coach Beeman’s Men’s Tennis Team won the Big Ten Championship, the first team at Michigan State to do so. He was instrumental in the planning and opening of the Men’s Intramural Building (later named IM Sports West) in 1959. Dr. Beeman instituted the first Master’s Degree program in Intramural Administration in the nation, a true pioneer in the field of Intramural Sports and Recreative Services. Frank sent more then 50 graduate students into the field of recreation throughout his tenure. His legacy lives on throughout the nation in the intramural programs that his graduates continue to operate. He always maintained an open door policy symbolized by the oversized doorway into the main office area. After 40 years of service to MSU, Dr. Beeman retired in 1987.

Jackie Dunayevich is a 2005 graduate

from North Farmington High School. She is majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies in Social Science – Health

Studies and will be attending Nursing school at Villanova University in May 2010. Jackie has been working at IM East and IM West since her freshman

year as an aerobics instructor.

Katie Clark is a 2005 graduate of Western High School in Jackson, Michigan. She is a Supply Chain

Management major with a specialization in International Business. She plans to

pursue a Masters Degree in College Student Affairs after she graduates in

December of 2009. Katie has worked for Intramural Sports for four years.
