• Starting Fall 2009, Blackboard sections are automatically generated for every for-credit courses.

• Instructors and students are automatically populated from the registrar data.

• Instructors and Course Roster Viewers can enroll TAs in Blackboard using an external application.

• Scheduling Deputy can enroll TAs in Banner.

• Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA) governs access to students Education Records

• Federal Law and Purdue University policies require FERPA Certification (annual) before you can access student records on Vista

• 10-15 min. training/certification can be completed online.

• Login with your Purdue ID & Password

Change your personal settings

• Select My Settings

• Edit Profile – Add an email address

• Turn the HTML Creator on by default

• Turn on Mail Forwarding

Roles and Tabs

Users who have both Instructor and Designer roles will see all tabs.

Users assigned the Section Designer role only will see the Build and Student View tabs.

Likewise users assigned the Section Instructor role will see the Teach and Student View tabs.

Setting up the Grade Book

You can customize Grade Book by:

– creating and editing columns.

– modifying column settings to control alignment, number of decimals, and whether the column is released to students.

– modifying how some elements of the Grade Book are displayed and the order and visibility of columns.

Default Columns:– Last Name, First Name, User Name,

and Role– Midterm and Final

Automatically Created Columns:– Assessments, Assignments, &

Discussions– SCORM

Some column types need further editing:– Calculated Column

• Create the Formula for the calculation

– Letter Grade • Create the numeric ranges that determine

which letter grade is assigned

– Selection List Terms• Define all possible list values

Activity: Enrolling Members

• First, we need to populate our training section with students.

• Using Enroll Members, enter the names of these students.

Activity: Creating and Editing Columns

• Create numeric columns titled Project1 and Project2. These columns should be grade-related and released to students. Enter grades in these columns.

• Create a calculated column titled Projects. This column should also be grade-related and released to the students. Create a formula which averages Project1 and Project2 to create values for this column.

More Options:– Reordering Columns– Audit History (granular)– Export/Import to/from a Spreadsheet– IDP Scoring

Activity: Export/Import Grades

• Create an archive of your Grade Book by exporting grades to a spreadsheet

• Add a new column in Excel and import back.

Sending grades to the Registrar

• Submit grades directly from Blackboard to SIS

• Must be Instructor of Record or Course Roster Viewer

• Grades from the “Final” column alone can be submitted
