A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE PUBLIC-SAFETY PROFESSIONALS OF THE CAROLINA COMMANDER FOOTBALL TEAM OF CHARLESTON, BERKELEY, AND DORCHESTER COUNTIES, AND TO CONGRATULATE THE TEAM MEMBERS FOR THEIR CHARITABLE WORK IN THEIR COMMUNITIES.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to hear that the Carolina Commanders seek to bridge the relationship between public-safety professionals and the communities, especially the youth, that they serve through exciting, family-oriented activities and fun; and

Whereas, in 1996, law enforcement representatives from around the country met in St. Louis, Missouri, to form the National Law Enforcement Football League, and the first season began in the spring of 1997; and

Whereas, when the league was expanded the following year to allow participation from firefighters and emergency medical personnel, the league was renamed the National Public Safety Football League, which today includes over twenty-two teams in six conferences; and

Whereas, in 2007, Officer Urie Smalls, a twenty-two-year veteran on the Charleston police force, founded the Carolina Commanders Football Team, and in 2009, the organization grew to include a public-safety football program that seeks to strengthen ties between the community and public-safety officials; and

Whereas, the Carolina Commanders recruit players among law enforcement, corrections, emergency-medical, parole, and military personnel as well as firefighters; and

Whereas, with lofty goals, the Carolina Commanders will begin their first season in February 2010 and will seek to build a foundation to provide scholarships to underprivileged youths for college education or specialized training, a memorial fund to honor fallen public-safety professionals with aid for their surviving spouses and children, and a fund to help senior citizens in their communities with the cost of prescription medications; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are grateful for the work of the Carolina Commander Football Team whose members have brought pride and distinction to their professions and to their communities. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the public-safety professionals of the Carolina Commander Football Team of Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester counties, and congratulate the team members for their charitable work in their communities.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Carolina Commander Football Team.
