2009 OUA Silver MedalistsThe University of Toronto Varsity Blues field hockey team fell to the Guelph Gry-phons 1-0 in the OUA championship game on Sunday, November 1 in London, Ont.

It was the third consecutive OUA final featuring the Gryphons and the Blues, with Guelph taking home the crown twice over the past three seasons.

Tegan Stairs (Kitchener, Ont.) took credit for the only goal of the contest, tipping in a shot from her sister Brienne only a couple of minutes into the game.

Both teams had plenty of scoring opportunities, par-ticularly the Blues who could not convert their nu-merous chances in the second half to even the score.

“We missed two chances - an open-netter and a breakaway,” said head coach John DeSouza. “You can’t miss chances against a team like that. If you do, you’re going to have a tough time.”

Guelph goaltender Dorothy Marcy (Oliver, B.C.) was the stand out of the match, stonewalling the Blues forwards and corner unit to preserve the shut out and the OUA banner for the Gryphons.

Both Guelph and Toronto will travel out West next weekend (Nov. 5-8) for the 2009 CIS championships, hosted by the University of Victoria.

“We’re looking forward to the challenge,” said DeS-ouza. “It’s going to be important for us to recover quickly and get psyched up for it. I think we’ve got some things in the bag that we can use.”

Toronto will enter the tournament as the No. 4 seed and will be joined by the Gryphons, UBC, UVIC and the University of Alberta in the pursuit of CIS gold.

Record ManualVARSITY BLUES HISTORY

For over forty years the University of Toronto has been central to the growth of field hockey as a Canadian university sport. Since the early 1960s, field hockey has flourished and the U of T Varsity Blues have created a tradition of excellence and achievement at both the provincial and national levels.

The foundations were laid early, when the Varsity Blues captured their first Ontario-Quebec university field hockey championship in 1963. That victory was just the beginning, with U of T going on to claim an incredible 26 OUA championships and ten national titles. The Varsity Blues are also the leaders in “firsts”, winning the inau-gural OWIAA outdoor title in 1971, capturing the inaugural CIS outdoor championship in 1975 and claiming the first Ontario indoor hockey banner in 1985. U of T women’s field hockey also had an incredible run from 1963 to 1979, going an amazing 17 season without a single loss in league play.

Liz Hoffman continued the emerging dynasty in 1974, coaching the Blues for the next 20 seasons and retiring in 1994 to become U of T’s Director of Athletics. Under her guidance the team won 16 Ontario league titles and eight CIAU championships.

Following Hoffman’s retirement, Beth Ali took the reins and soon posted three consecutive undefeated seasons (1995-1997). The winning streak has continued, with the Varsity Blues claiming eight of the past 11 OUA cham-pionships since 1997. At the national level, Ali captured a CIAU crown in 1996, a silver medal in 2000 and six bronze medals (1995, 1997, 1998, 2004, 2005, 2006) before retiring at the end of the 2006-07 season.

Carrying on this successful coaching tradition is John De Souza, Blues assistant coach for 18 years. A provincial player for 13 years and a national team player for seven years, De Souza coached the national indoor field hockey team in 2007 and was the assistant coach with the 2007 Pan American team that won gold and represented Canada at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

In total, Varsity teams have won 36 outdoor championships (26 provinicial and ten national) plus 15 Ontario indoor titles. The program has produced numerous athletes for Canada’s junior and senior national teams, as well as eight Olympians, 67 CIS all-Canadians since 1985, ten inductees to the U of T Sports Hall of Fame and eight U of T Athletes of the Year.

BLUES WIN INAUGURAL CWIAU FIELD HOCKEY TITLE

In 1975 the U of T women’s field hockey team (pictured at left) not only captured the inaugural CWIAU cham-pionship, but with that victory became the first Varsity Blues women’s squad to earn a national university title. The team was inducted into the U of T Sports Hall of Fame in 2003.

Led by head coach Liz Hoffman, the team qualified for the first Canadian university championship with an impressive display at the OWIAA championships at York University. The Varsity Blues won their 13th straight OWIAA title with a 7-0 record, while outscoring the opposition by an impressive 27-0 margin.

At the CWIAU championship hosted by the University of British Columbia, U of T opened the round-robin portion of the event with a pair of shutout victories over Lakehead (2-0) and McGill (3-0). The Varsity Blues started the second day of competition with a 3-0 win over Dalhousie, before falling 3-2 on penalty strokes to the University of Victoria in their final match of round robin play. The 3-1 record earned U of T a three-way tie for first place with UVic and Dalhousie. U of T claimed the top spot on goal differential and with it, a place in the finals versus UVic.

After a scoreless opening half in the final, U of T’s Anne Hofland scored early in the second stanza to give U of T a 1-0 advantage, a lead that they would never relinquish. The Varsity Blues then controlled play until the final horn to earn the inaugural national crown. Carol MacDougall paced U of T with a three-goal tournament, while Diana Millar, Anne Hofland and co-captain Susan Scott added two goals apiece.
