Director of Swimming and Diving Matt Crispino enters his third season at the helm of the Tribe program. Crispino became the sixth director in the history of the College since the men’s and women’s teams combined in the 1989-90 season, and is the first W&M alumnus to head either swim team since Keith Havens ’76 from 1981 to 1984. In the 2008-09 season, the women’s swimming and div-ing team had one of its finest years in the College’s history. The team posted a 10-2 dual meet record during the regu-lar season, including a 7-1 ledger vs. CAA competition. At the championship meet, the Tribe won seven conference titles, including a trio of relays. In total, W&M broke school records on 14 occasions, CAA conference records on sev-en occasions, and W&M freshmen records six times. Lead-ing the way was Katie Radloff, who not only won the 50, 100, and 200 free in CAA for the third straight year, but also collected seven medals in total, the most of any athlete at the event, and advanced to the NCAA Championships for the third straight year. In the relays, the Tribe won gold in the 200, 400, and 800 free relays, while earning a silver medal in the 400 medley relay. Rookie Hailey Hewitt also became the first woman in the school’s history to win the 200 back at the CAAs. For the men’s swimming and diving team, the 2008-09 season was a great step forward for the program. Much like the women’s team, however, the men’s team saved its best swimming of the season for the CAA Championships. After finishing seventh in 2008, the College placed fourth in 2009, the biggest improvement of any team. The Tribe scored 466 points at the championship meet, the most the College had scored since the 2000-01 season, despite the fact that the team competed with-out divers. Overall at the meet, the Tribe broke W&M records 15 times and freshmen records six times. The College really excelled in the relays, breaking all five William and Mary records, including a pair that were more than 10 years old. In 2007-08 season, the women’s team finished the year ranked sixth by Colleg-eSwimming.com in the mid-major poll due in large part to the team’s runner-up finish at the CAA Championships. Radloff was named Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet for the second consecutive year after sweeping the sprint events. She was also named CAA Swimmer of the Year, was named to the CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major All-American team and competed at both the NCAA Championships and the Olympic Trials. During Crispino’s first season on campus in 2007-08, the men’s swimming and diving team performed well and saw a number of school records fall. Crispino returned to his alma mater in 2007 after five years in the assistant coach-ing ranks. His most recent stop was at Colgate University for the 2006-07 season, where he served as the assistant coach for both men’s and women’s teams. Directly responsible for the sprint corps, Crispino saw his athletes race to 49 lifetime-best performances, including four school-records and one freshman record. Prior to Colgate, he spent three years on the deck at West Point as the assistant coach for both men and women, helping the Corps of Cadets to a 23-12 record and a pair of second-place showings at the Patriot League Championships. In addition to his direct responsibilities for the sprint group, Crispino also helped develop the dry-land and in-pool training regimens for the middle-distance and distance swim-mers, leading the team to break 12 Academy and 13 plebe (freshman) records and producing four U.S. National qualifiers and two NCAA “B” cuts. His 27 sprinters alone achieved 109 lifetime-bests. Crispino got his start in coaching as a graduate assistant at Florida State Univer-sity, where he worked with several athletes who counted NCAA, U.S. National, and Olympic Trials bids among their accomplishments. He helped guide the Seminole men to a runner-up finish at the 2003 ACC Championships, while the women came in third. The teams combined to send seven athletes to the NCAA Championships during his tenure. The captain and Most Valuable Swimmer of the 2001-02 Tribe men’s swimming team, Crispino helped set the school record in the 800 free relay as a freshman at the CAA Championships, with a time of 6:47.85. In his rookie season, the team placed a program-best second at the conference meet after going 15-1 (6-0 CAA) during the regular season. Crispino still ranks among the all-time top-10 in the 200 and 500 free, and is sixth all-time at the College in the 200 IM. Crispino received his bachelor’s of arts in government from the College in 2002, and his master’s in physical education from Florida State in 2003. In July 2008, he married Liz Koch, former Tribe swimmer and CAA Champion in the 100 and 200 fly. The couple resides in Williamsburg.

DIVING COACH

Joyce D’arcy joins the William and Mary staff this season as the diving coach. D’arcy replaces Dr. Robert McNamee who retired after the 2008-09 season after eight seasons. The appointment is pursuant to final approval from the College’s Board of visitors. D’arcy comes to W&M with six years of coaching experience. Previously, she has been the diving coach at West Chicago high school and with the Arlington Heights Recreation diving team. Currently, D’arcy in-structs youth diving classes at the Kingswood pool in Williamsburg. “We are excited about Joyce’s decision to coach our divers here at William & Mary,” Crispino said. “In the interview process, her passion for the sport of diving and for motivating student-athletes were immediately evident. Our divers will undoubtedly benefit from her experience and enthusiasm.” D’arcy graduated from Rockford College in 1988 with bachelor’s degrees in both Spanish and Music. At Rockford, she was a member of the diving team for two years and an NCAA Division III All-American. In high school, D’arcy was a four-year member of the diving team and was selected as captain her senior season. D’arcy currently resides in Williamsburg with her husband, Derek, and their four children.

SecondSeasonatW&M JamesMadison,2008STEVEN EVANS

ASSISTANT COACH

Steven Evans enters his second season as an as-sistant coach for the Tribe men’s and women’s swim-ming and diving teams. Evans, a 2008 James Madi-son University graduate, was a four-year member of the Dukes’ swimming and diving team. More recently, Evans has worked locally as an assistant coach at the Williamsburg Aquatic Club. At the time of his hiring, Tribe head coach Matt Crispino said of Evans, “With his swimming experience at JMU and his familiarity with the CAA, Steven really knows what it takes to succeed and excel in our con-ference. Steven comes highly recommended from his coaches in the Williamsburg area and I look for him to bring an abundance of energy to the pool deck.” A graduate of Jamestown High School in Williamsburg, Evans earned his bachelor’s of science in sports and recreation management from JMU in 2008. Evans, who resides in Williamsburg, currently works as an assistant age group coach at the Williamsburg Aquatic Club.

FirstSeasonatW&M Kenyon,2004FERNANDO RODRIGUEZ

ASSISTANT COACH

Fernando Rodriguez enters his first season as assistant coach for the Tribe in 2009. Rodriguez will serve as the recruiting coordinator and will also handle the responsibilities of the stroke and IM groups. “I am thrilled that Fernando has chosen to join the Tribe swimming and diving staff. Fernando is a proven winner, and has surrounded himself with some of the best coaches our sport has to offer,” Crispino said of Rodriguez’s hiring. “I have no doubt that his experi-ence at Kenyon, Wabash, and Athens Bulldogs will serve our program well. When you speak with Fernan-do, it’s easy to see that he not only knows the sport, but he is extremely passionate about it. He understands the concept of the student-athlete, and he understands what it takes to win – and that’s exactly what we plan to do with Fernando on board.” Rodriguez comes to the College with six years of coaching experience, most recently as a an assistant senior coach and head master’s coach with the Ath-ens Bulldogs Swim Club in Athens, Georgia. He was also an assistant coach at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana during the 2004-05 season. Rodriguez graduated from Kenyon College in 2004 with a degree in anthro-pology. He recently obtained his master’s degree in kinesiology from the Uni-versity of Georgia. As a student-athlete at Kenyon, Rodriguez was a seven-time NCAA All-American and a four-time All-NCAC honoree. He was also part of four NCAA D-III national championship teams.

After one of its most successful years, culmi-nating in a runner-up finish at the CAA Champion-ships for a second-consecutive year, the William and Mary Tribe women’s swimming and diving team is ready to take that final step. “As runner-ups the past two seasons, we’re happy with the progress we’ve made, but the ulti-mate goal still remains to win the CAA title,” Director of Swimming and Diving Matt Crispino says. “With the roster we have this year, we believe we have what it takes to accomplish our goal this season.”

SPRINT FREESTYLE Heading into their senior seasons, the two best freestyle sprinters in the College’s history hope to bookend their collegiate careers with a CAA title. Katie Radloff, the school record-holder in all three sprint freestyle events will look to reclaim the title of CAA Swimmer of the Year this season after winning it her first two years on campus. Radloff remains undefeated at the CAA’s in the 50, 100, and 200 free, setting school and conference records this past season. Classmate Lindsay Guers will also look to end her career for the Green and Gold on a high note this season. Guers has had a great two years after transferring in from Florida State. Guers ranks second all-time at the College in the 100 and 200 free, and third in school history in the 50 free. Gu-ers was fantastic at last year’s conference champi-onships, setting personal bests in all three events. Junior Emily Burns will look to improve her times this season after another great year for the College. Burns, who ranks second all-time in school history in the 50 free, will be counted on to score points once again for the College at the CAA’s this season. Sophomore Liza McDevitt had a great showing at her first conference championships, setting personal-bests in all three sprint freestyle events. Freshman Elizabeth Hall will look to contribute right away, especially in the 50 free. At Chantilly High School, Hall earned five automatic All-American honors and was named to TheWash-ingtonPost All-Metro team in 2008 and 2009. Providing depth in the sprint freestyle events will be a pair of juniors who will both look to rebound from injuries last season. Both Stevi Anderson and Haley Smith will look to drop their times this season and potentially score points for the Tribe at the CAA’s.

DISTANCE FREESTYLE Headlining the deep group of distance free-styles for the College this season will be the school record holder in both the 1,000 and the 1,650, sophomore Molly Emery. Emery had a great regu-lar season for the Tribe, racking up 13 dual-meet victories, but the rookie really came on at the CAA’s breaking the school record in the both the 1,000 and the 1,650 on the same swim. This season, Emery will look to drop her times even further and compete for CAA title in the 1,650. Classmate Liz Fireman will also look to im-prove off a great rookie campaign this season. The versatile swimmer, who can swim the 200, 500, and 1,650, will look to drop her times even further and again score big points for the College at the CAA’s. Senior Tage Waite, the former school record holder in the 1,650, will headline a trio of swimmers that will be counted on heavily this season in the distance freestyle events. After an injury-plagued junior year, look for Waite to revert back to sopho-more form. Freshmen Meghan Baker and Caylyn Tate will also be counted on early in their Green and Gold careers. Both Baker and Tate arrive in Williamsburg with impressive prep resumes and should score points this season for the College at the conference championships. Providing depth for the Tribe in the distance freestyle events this season will be juniors Clare

LeGuyader and Kristin Fimian and sophomore Kelly Fini. Both LeGuyader and Fini will look to drop their personal-best times they set last season, while Fimian will look to replicate her form from the 2008 CAA Championships where she set two per-sonal bests.

BUTTERFLY In the butterfly, the College will have one of its best group of fliers in recent memory, headlined by the school record holder in the 200 fly, senior Erin Welshofer. Welshofer had a great swim in the finals of the 200 fly, coming within milliseconds of breaking two minutes. Welshofer will once again look for a conference title in the event and will be looked upon for leadership among the corps of fli-ers. Sophomore Hailey Hewitt will look to build upon one of the best rookie campaigns in school history this season. Hewitt had an unbelievable regular season, tying the school record for most dual-meet victories in a season with 27. Hewitt then capped her season with a great performance at the CAA’s and will look to build upon the freshman re-cords she set last season. Junior Julia Applebaum and freshman Gabri-elle Mizerak will both be counted on to score critical points for the College this season at the conference championships. Applebaum will hope to lower the personal-bests she set at last year’s CAA’s, while Mizerak will look to translate her great success on the prep level to success at the collegiate level. In 2009, Mizerak was named TheWashington Post All-Area Swimmer of the Year and was a five-time All-American at Osbourn Park High School. Two other freshmen will also look to contribute right away for the College. Hall is a fantastic sprint flyer, while Kayla O’Malley will provide another ca-pable swimmer for W&M in the 200 fly.

BACKSTROKE Along with the sprint freestyle, backstroke might very well be the deepest group for the College this season. Leading the corps of backstrokers this season will be the two school record holders in the 100 and 200 back, Radloff and Hewitt. Hewitt, the CAA Champion in the 200 back, will look to defend her title this season, while Radloff will once again look to dominate the 100 back when not swimming the sprint freestyle events. Sophomore Erica Rapp and Emery will also be counted on heavily at conferences this season. Last year, Emery set the school’s freshman record in the 100 back at the conference meet, while Rapp was forced to miss the CAA’s due to illness. Also being counted on to score points this season will be rookies Hall and Mizerak. Look for Hall to contrib-ute in the relays and 100 back for the College, while Mizerak will specialize in the 200 back. Rounding out the group of backstrokers this season for the College will be junior Hope Sweet-nam and Applebaum, both of whom scored points and set personal bests at last year’s CAA Champi-onships.

BREASTSTROKE Leading the way for William and Mary in the breaststroke this season will be a pair of seniors, both of which set personal-bests last season at the CAA Championships. Suzanne Figuers had a great showing at the conference meet, not only setting personal bests in both the 100 and 200 breast, but also making the consolation finals of both events as well. Look for Figuers to elevate her game and compete for a spot in the championship finals in both events. Also looking to compete for a CAA title this season will be Courtney Alles, who placed fifth last season in the championship final of the 200 breast. Alles will hope to build upon her times she set last

season and help lead the young group of breast-strokers this season. Freshmen Emily Bart and Shelby Ran-dall will be counted on to contribute immediately this season for the College. Bart was a four-time state qualifier in the breaststroke at Cherry Hill High School West in New Jersey, while Randall was a three-time NCSA Junior National qualifier at Midlothian High School in Virginia. Adding depth to the group this season will be sophomore Laura Mathews. Matthews had a very solid rookie season for the College, swimming for the Tribe at last year’s conference championships.

INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY Headlining the versatile group of individual medley swimmers this season will be veterans Alles and Figuers. Alles made the championship final of the 400 IM last season, then won the 200 IM con-solation final in a personal-best time. Figuers also swam well, making the championship final of the 200 IM. Both Emery and Hewitt will look to lower their times from last season, times that set school fresh-man records last year, Emery won the consolation final of the 400 IM last season in a freshman record time, while Hewitt set the freshman record in the 200 IM at the Terrapin Cup Invitational. The freshman trio of Bart, O’Malley, and Ran-dall will all look to score points at the conference meet this season, with O’Malley and Randall spe-cializing in the 200 IM and Bart concentrating on the 400 IM. Also looking to make a splash in the indi-vidual medley will be Matthews, who set personal bests in both the 200 and 400 IM at the Terrapin Cup Invitational last season.

DIVING With the graduation of senior co-captain Sa-mantha Greenwood, sophomore Maureen Reed will be counted on heavily this season and will look to score points for the College at the conference championships.

RELAYS Relays will once again be a strong suit for Wil-liam and Mary this season after great showings in all the relays last season at the CAA’s. W&M will look to continue its dominance in the free relays this season at the conference championships after winning gold in all three in school and conference record time. After setting the school record in the 400 med-ley relay and finishing second at the CAA’s last year, the College will hope to build off that effort and get on the medal stand on both medley relays. A long list of candidates will be considered for the relays in hopes of finding the right combination.

THE COLLEGE OF WILLIAM & MARY

TRIBE ATHLETICS AN EXPERIENCE IN EXCELLENCE 17

In 2008-09, the William and Mary Tribe men’s swimming and diving team took great steps for-ward, and in 2009-10, the College plans on taking even more strides. “Last season, we made a lot of progress as a program,” Director of Swimming and Diving Matt Crispino says. “Moving from seventh to fourth was a good step, but this season we hope to challenge the top teams for a conference title. This year’s team is very, very young, but they’re hungry and I expect big things.”

SPRINT FREESTYLE Headlining the corps of sprint freestyle swim-mers this season for William and Mary will be senior Kevin Gallagher. Gallagher set the school record in the 100 freestyle last season at the CAA’s and he will once again be counted on to lead this deep pool of swimmers. Also expected to score points for the College at this season’s CAA Championships will be redshirt freshman Max Glober and junior Michael Nacca-relli. Glober, who sat out last season due to injury, has made great strides this summer and enters the season as the Tribe’s second-fastest sprinter. Nac-carelli had a solid season in 2008-09, but will look to revert back to the form he had at the 2008 confer-ence championships when he set three personal-best times. Senior Kevin Lynch, junior Andrew Quesen-berry and sophomore Marty Harm will all look to push Glober and Naccarelli for spots in the sprint freestyle events this season. Lynch and Quesen-berry will both look to lower their times from last season, while Harm will look to improve this season on the freshman record time he set last year in the 50 freestyle. A quartet of freshman will also see time in the pool for the College in the sprint freestyle events this season. Rookies Stevie Cline, Hunter Perrot, Brian Murphy, and Ben Ward will all look to trans-late the great success they had on the prep level to the collegiate level.

DISTANCE FREESTYLE Leading the Tribe’s distance freestyles this year will be sophomores Stephen Fay and Luke Robbins. Both swimmers had great regular sea-sons for the Green and Gold, but both really ex-celled when it mattered most at the conference championships. Both Fay and Robbins showcased their tremendous talent, with each scoring critical points for the Tribe in the 200, 500, and 1,650 free-style. Look for both swimmers to lower their times this season and complete for titles at the CAA’s this year. Aside from Fay and Robbins, sophomore Co-lin Stanton and freshman Kyle McVeigh will both look to score points for the College in the longer freestyle events. Stanton set personal bests in the both 500 and the 1,650 free at the conference meet last season, while McVeigh comes to Williamsburg with prep background in the 1,650 and 500. Contributing to the Tribe in the middle distance this season will be the duo of senior Austin Baraki and Perrot. All three have the talent and capabilities

to contribute right away, with aspirations of scoring points for the Green and Gold at the CAA Champi-onships this year.

BUTTERFLY Pacing the fliers this season for the College will be junior Geoff Ramsdell, who came on strong towards the end of the season, culminating in a school-record time in the 100 fly. Ramsdell will be heavily counted on to not only duplicate the points he scored for the Tribe last season at CAA’s, but also compete for a conference title in the 100 fly. Along with Ramsdell in the 100 fly, four other swimmer will hope to make waves in the event. Leading that group is sophomore Marty Harm, who set the freshman record in the 100 last season. Se-nior Kevin Lynch will look to move up the College’s all-time ranks in the event from his current spot in fifth, while sophomore Jake Maloy and Murphy will also look to improve upon their times and help out the team. In the 200 fly, sophomore Evan Mulloy and freshman K.J. Shaw will be counted on to step up and swim well immediately. Last season at the con-ference championships, Mulloy set personal-best times in both the 100 and 200 fly and will look to lower those times, while Shaw comes to the College with a prep resume that includes being apart of the 2009 NCSA Junior National’s men’s and combined championship teams.

BACKSTROKE The Tribe’s backstrokers will have a new look this year with the graduation of both Shawn Mat-thews and David Mangini. No one swimmer will be able to fill those shoes, but the College has a deep group of swimmers that will all need to step up. One person expected to help fill the void will be Maloy, who set the school’s freshman record in the 100 back last season. Also expected to help ease the pain is freshman Sidney Glass, who was the Central Region Swimmer of the Year in Virginia during his senior year at Atlee High School. Another group of five swimmers will look to see time in the pool this season for the Tribe in the backstroke events and Crispino hopes that all will step up in the open competition to fill spots. Among that group is senior Kevin Gallagher and junior Geoff Ramsdell, both of whom should pro-vide quality depth in the 100 back. In the 200 back, sophomore Jack Collins, sophomore transfer Mitch Finch, and McVeigh will all look to improve and score points for the Tribe at the CAA Champi-onships, with McVeigh also helping in the 100 back as well.

BREASTSTROKE Headlining the Tribe’s breaststrokers this season will be senior Andrew DeMichaelis and junior Jim Fenningham. At last year’s CAA Cham-pionships, Fenningham had a great performance, touching the wall in a personal-best time and finish-ing fourth in the consolation final of the 200 breast. DeMichaelis also swam well, setting a personal-best time of his own in the 100 and 200 breast. Both men will be expected to score even better this

season and to provide leadership to a young group of swimmers. The College will again count on freshman to step up right away, as the trio of Jesse Cunning-ham, Shaw, and Ward will all see significant time in the pool. Along with Shaw, Cunningham, who was a Junior National qualifier, will see most of his time swimming the 200 breast. Ward, who was also a Junior National qualifier, will swim the 100 breast for the College during his rookie campaign. Providing depth in the breaststroke this year for William and Mary will be two sophomores in Stanton and Collins. Both have the potential to push for time in the pool with goals of scoring at conference not out of the question.

INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY With the graduation of Mangini, who set the school record in both the 200 and 400 IM last sea-son, the College will again have big shoes to fill. Looking to fill the void will be versatile group of swimmers. In the 200 IM, Ramsdell will help fill the void left by Mangini. Ramsdell is a very talented swim-mer, who already ranks sixth all-time in the school’s history in the 200 IM. Look for Ramsdell to lower his times even further this season and vie for a spot in the championship final at the CAA’s. Providing depth to Ramsdell in the 200 will be Collins, along with rookies Shaw and Cunningham. Collins showed promise last season in the 200 IM, while both Shaw and Cunningham had a great deal of success swimming the event in high school. Shaw will be counted on more heavily in the 400 IM, however, as the College looks for swim-mers to step up. Shaw had a very impressive high school career, and he will have to adjust fast to col-legiate competition if he hopes to score points for the Green and Gold this season at the conference championships. Also expected to contribute in the 400 IM will be Stanton, who set a personal-best last year in the event at the CAA’s.

DIVING William and Mary will have just one diver on the roster this season in the person of junior Mike Newcomb. Although the College did not send a div-er to the CAA Championships last season, Crispino and new diving coach Joyce D’arcy expect a big season from Newcomb, in hopes he will improve on his solid scores from a season ago.

RELAYS At the 2008-09 CAA Championships, the Tribe set new school records in all five relays. This sea-son, the College will hope to better all those times. This year the free relays will again be a strong suit for W&M, since the strength of the team lies in its sprint and middle distance freestyle swimmers. The medley relays for the Green and Gold this sea-son are more unknown than its free relays, but the team has a great wealth of talented and versatile swimmers to choose from to form very competitive relays that should have great chance to medal at the conference championships this season.

The College of William and Mary is a public uni-versity located in Williamsburg, Va. Founded in 1693 by Royal Charter issued by King William III and Queen Mary II of England, William and Mary is the second oldest college in the country after Harvard. William and Mary has a long history of liberal arts education and a growing research and science curriculum that demonstrates a strong commitment to undergraduate research. The College, which became a state university in 1906, has been designated a “Public Ivy,” and for nine straight years has been ranked by U.S. News & World Report as the sixth-best public university in the country – and the nation’s top small public university. Also referred to as “the alma mater of a nation,” the College has educated four U.S. Presidents – George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe and John Tyler, which is the third most of any college in the coun-try. William and Mary also claims several firsts, including the 1776 creation of Phi Beta Kappa – the country’s first academic honor society – the first honor code of conduct for college students, and the first collegiate law school, es-tablished in 1779. William and Mary is also home to the Sir Christopher Wren Building – the country’s oldest academic building still in use – and the President’s House, the oldest home of a university president still in use.

WILLIAM & MARY FACTS

Second oldest educational institution in the U.S.

In addition to four U.S. Presidents, W&M has educated a number of this country’s key historical figures, including U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall and 16 signers of the Declaration of Independence.

W&M is one of only eight U.S. institutions of higher edu-cation designated a “Public Ivy.” A Public Ivy is a state-assisted institution that offers a superior education at a cost far below that of Ivy League schools.

U.S.News ranked W&M sixth among all public colleges and universities and 32nd among both public and private institutions in 2009.

Newsweek named W&M “hottest small state university” in 2006.

U.SNewsandWorldReport rated the School of Educa-tion 48th in the country in 2010.

W&M ranked 18th in graduation rates for national uni-versities in 2009.

The PrincetonReview named W&M a the ‘Best of the Southeast’ school in 2009.

The W&M Law School ranked 30th in the nation in 2008.

The History Department’s doctoral program ranked fourth in the nation for U.S. Colonial History in 2010.

W&M ranked as the sixth-best public university in the country in the inaugural guide, “America’s Best Colleges 2008” by ForbesMagazine.

The PrincetonReview rated W&M the third among the top 50 best value public colleges nationally in 2009.

Phi Beta Kappa, the premier academic honor society in America, was founded by W&M students in 1776.

W&M’s 11-to-1 student-faculty ratio is the lowest among the top public universities. Nearly 50 percent of William and Mary’s classes have fewer than 20 students.

W&M libraries, including the main Earl Swem Library, were rated the eighth best College Library in the Country by the Princeton Review in 2008.

BusinessWeek rated the W&M Undergraduate Business Program in the top 10 among Public Institutions in the country.

The College of William and Mary sponsors 23 varsity sports and provides students with a unique and successful balance of athletics and academics. The Tribe Athletics Department finished 117th nationally in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Standings for 2008-09, a number that ranked second among Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) programs and fourth in the state of Virginia. The Directors’ Cup, which was created by the NACDA and USA Today in 1993-94, is a program that hon-ors institutions maintaining a broad-based program, achieving success in many sports, both men’s and women’s. W&M has placed among the top 100 nationally in 12 of the program’s 16 years, while leading the CAA on seven occasions. W&M has produced more CAA Championships than any program in the league’s history. The College owns 95 league crowns, nearly 40 more than its closest competitor. The Tribe raked in the awards in 2008-09 as well, tallying a combined 197 all-conference honors, 34 All-America honors and six league players of the year. During the 2008-09 season, the Green and Gold produced an overall athletics winning percentage of 68.2, while racking up a combined 888 wins. Along with its accomplishments on the field of play, the Tribe is just as successful in the classroom, epitomizing the term student-athlete. In the NCAA’s inaugural Academic Prog-ress Report in 2005, W&M ranked fourth among Division I teams, which was the highest of any athletic scholarship-granting school and of any public school. Since the inception of the CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year, W&M has produced 28 honorees, more than any school in the conference.

William and Mary is committed to building and maintaining outstanding facilities for all 23 of its varsity athletic teams. The College has demonstrated this commit-ment by investing approximately $16 million toward the construction and upgrade of its athletics facilities during just the last six years. Among W&M’s recent projects was the completion of the $11 million, 30,000-square foot Jimmye Laycock Football Center, which was dedicated in June of 2008. This past summer, the Laycock Center renovated the foyer to include photos, information and memorablia on the Tribe’s storied football tradition. This past summer, Busch Field experienced a renovation that included a total revamp of the field, underlying pad, water cannon and drainage system. The reno-vation created a competition surface that ranks alongside those used at the U.S. National Training Centers in Virginia Beach, Va., Chula Vista, Calif., and that used at last year’s Olympic Games. In 2005, Kaplan Arena received an upgrade with the installation of 6,900-square foot permanent wood floor along with rubberized sports flooring on the open end of the arena to accomodate track and field and other multi-purpose activities. A year earlier, the home of Tribe soccer and lacrosse, Albert-Daly Field was dedicated, providing the programs with a $1 million all-natural grass facility.
