2008-09 in review

2008-09 Year in reviewStanford closed out the 2008-09 campaign at 20-14 overall and 6-12 in Pac-10 play. For the 20th time in school history, the Cardinal reached the 20-win plateau. Following up on a 28-8 mark in 2007-08, this is the first time since 2002-03 (24-9 overall) and 2003-04 (30-2 overall) that Stanford has posted back-to-back 20-win seasons. Stanford secured a winning record for the 16th consecutive season and notched at least 18 victories for the third year in a row. The Cardinal also advanced to the postseason for the 16th straight year, reaching the semifinals of the College Basketball Invitational (CBI).

All told, it was a season filled with several notable accomplishments and memorable moments. Here is a look back at a few of the highlights:

stanford 75, Yale 67Nov. 14, 2008 – New Haven, CT

Lawrence Hill scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to help Stanford beat Yale 75-67 in the season opener for both teams. Anthony Goods added 19 points, including three consecutive 3-point shots to help put Stanford up 50-41 with 11:33 left. It was also the first career victory for Stanford first-year head coach Johnny Dawkins. In a game that featured seven ties and 13 lead changes, Stanford’s biggest advantage was 13 points at 66-53 with 3:26 left. The Cardinal shot 52 percent, including a 13-25 mark, from the floor in the second half. Stanford grabbed the lead for good one minute into the second half at 34-33, after the lead changed hands 11 times in the first half. Stanford improved to 77-17 in season openers and has now won 20 of its last 21 lid-lifters. For the first time ever, Stanford received at least 10 points in the same game from seniors Hill, Goods and Mitch Johnson.

stanford 65, northwestern 59Dec. 20, 2008 – Stanford, CA

Stanford’s 6-0 start had surprised everyone and this matchup against North-western was perceived by many as the Cardinal’s most difficult challenge to date. But Anthony Goods scored 18 of his 20 points in the first half and Mitch Johnson matched his career high with 16 points, helping the undefeated Car-dinal fend off a late Northwestern rally for a 65-59 victory. Stanford made eight of its first 11 3-point tries and shot 9-for-18 from long range overall, including four each by Goods and Johnson. Stanford placed four players in double figures for the fifth time in seven games while Goods’ 18 first-half points were the most in a half since Brook Lopez poured in 20 during the second half of an 82-81 overtime victory over Marquette in the 2008 NCAA Tournament.

stanford 111, texas tech 66Dec. 28, 2008 – Stanford, CA

Stanford had little trouble putting up points last year, reaching the 100-point plateau twice in the first nine games and ranking among the Pac-10’s top offensive teams for much of the season. In Stanford’s best offensive effort of the year, Anthony Goods led four players in double figures with 21 points and the Cardinal remained unbeaten with a 111-66 thrashing of Texas Tech, representing the second-worst defeat in Red Raiders history. The Cardinal made nine of its 12 shots on the way to a quick 20-6 lead just 4:46 into the game. Stanford shot 51.3 percent in the first half, cruising to a 57-34 lead at the break. The Cardinal shot 56 percent overall for the contest, made 42 field goals on 24 assists, held a 48-28 rebounding edge and racked up 14 steals. Landry Fields chipped in with 19 points while Lawrence Hill added 17.

stanford 76, arizona 60Jan. 4, 2009 – Stanford, CA

Stinging from a 90-60 loss to No. 17/14 Arizona State two days earlier for its first loss of the year, Stanford fans were curious how the club would re-spond against a talented Arizona team. Mission accomplished, with Stan-ford prevailing 76-60 to improve to 11-1 overall. Landry Fields matched his career best with 19 points and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds for his first career double-double while Lawrence Hill added 14 points. Stanford took a 35-26 edge into halftime and the lead swelled to 20 by the 5:33 mark of the second half. Stanford’s relentless defensive pressure forced Arizona into 20 turnovers. In a rivalry that has been highlighted by close games (the previous 16 contests were decided by 10 points or less), Stanford made it look easy with its fourth consecutive win over Arizona dat-ing back to last year.

2008-09 notebookcBi debut a successStanford owns a 30-20 all-time postseason record after advancing to the semifinals of the CBI. In its second year, the CBI featured a single-elimination, 16-team field with the first three rounds of competition played at campus sites. Oregon State defeated UTEP in the best-of-three championship series, winning two of the three possible games. Stanford breezed past Boise State 96-76 in its opener at Maples Pavil-ion and followed that with a convincing 70-56 win at Wichita State in the second round. The Cardinal then dropped a 65-62 overtime decision to Oregon State in the semifinals in Corvallis.

20 in the Books...againWith a 70-56 win at Wichita State on Mar. 23, Stanford recorded its 20th season with at least 20

victories. Following up last year’s 28-8 mark, this is the first time since 2002-03 (24-9 overall) and 2003-04 (30-2 overall) that Stanford has posted back-to-back 20-win cam-paigns. Furthermore, Stanford managed to extend a pair of lengthy streaks with its 75-63 rout over USC back on Feb. 28. That triumph clinched a winning record for the 16th consecutive season and gave the Cardinal at least 16 wins for the 16th straight year. This was only the second 20-win season for Stanford over the last five years.

stanford among elite with non-League successStanford finished the 2008-09 campaign as one of three teams in NCAA Division I competition with an undefeated record (13-0) against non-conference competition. The other programs who did not lose a non-league game were NCAA champion North Carolina (20-0) and NCAA

Final Four participant Pittsburgh (16-0). Stanford has finished non-conference play unbeaten on five other

occasions, most recently in 1955-56 with an 8-0 mark. As one would expect, Stanford’s non-conference numbers

were outstanding. Nine of the 13 victories were decided by double-digits, the club’s victory margin was +17.0, four players averaged at least 10.6 points per game and Stanford reached the 100-point plateau twice while averaging 80.2 points per game.

cardinal well-represented on all-Pac-10 teamsSeniors Anthony Goods and Lawrence Hill received all-conference honors for the second time in their careers while Jeremy Green earned a spot on the Pac-10 All-Freshman Team, highlighting Stanford’s selections among the 2008-09 Pac-10 men’s basketball award winners. Both Goods and Hill received Honorable Mention recognition, with

Goods receiving the honor for the second straight season and Hill adding to his All-Pac-10 honor from two years ago.

Hot start, Undefeated record Highlight first HalfStanford reeled off 10 victories in a row to begin the year, matching the seventh-best start to a season in school history and best overall since the 2003-04

club opened the year with 26 consecutive wins. In addition, the 10-game winning streak was Stan-ford’s best since that same 26-0 stretch four years ago. Even more impressive, Stanford was one of six unbeaten teams remaining in Division I com-petition (joining Clemson, Illinois State, Pittsburgh, North Carolina, Wake Forest) prior to suffering its first loss on Jan. 2.

dawkins among nation’s top rookies, Best all-time at stanfordJohnny Dawkins completed his first season at the helm with a 20-14 record and goes in the books as Stanford’s winningest first-year head coach, surpassing Robert Burnett’s 19-9 mark in 1951-52. Furthermore, of the 21 first-year head coaches in Division 1 with no prior college head coaching experience, Dawkins ranked third for the distinc-tion of winningest rookie coach behind Western Kentucky’s Ken McDonald (25-9) and Arizona’s Russ Pennell (21-14).

season scoring For the eighth straight year, a different player led Stanford in scoring. Anthony Goods finished the year with a team-best 16.2 points per game, following Brook Lopez (19.3 ppg in 2007-08), Lawrence Hill (15.7 ppg in 2006-07), Matt Haryasz (16.2 ppg in 2005-06), Dan Grunfeld (17.9 ppg in 2004-05), Josh Childress (15.7 ppg in 2003-04), Julius Barnes (16.0 ppg in 2002-03) and Casey Jacobsen (21.9 ppg in 2001-02).

three-Point shot a Key in 2008-09Stanford finished the year with 249 three-pointers, its best to-tal since making 252 triples in 2000-01. The 249 makes also rank third-best in school history. Meanwhile, Stanford’s 649 three-point attempts are the most-ever in a single season.

moving Up the chartsWith five assists against Oregon State on Mar. 25 in his final collegiate game, Mitch Johnson increased his career to-tal to 534. He leaves The Farm in sole possession of second place in the school record books, as only Brevin Knight recorded more as-sists (780) during his ca-reer. Johnson finished his senior year with 145 handouts, also averaging 6.6 points and 2.5 rebounds per game while making 32 starts.

Home sweet HomeStanford owned a 14-4 record at home in 2008-09 and reached the 10-win mark at Maples Pa-vilion for the 16th consecutive year with a 77-55 win over Oregon back on Jan. 22. In 2007-08, the Cardinal set a record for home victories (16) in a single season. Additionally, the Cardinal is 30-5 in its last 35 home games dating back to the start of last year.

Lawrence Hill

stanford 75, no. 22/23 california 69Jan. 17, 2009 – Stanford, CA

Lawrence Hill matched his career high with 25 points on 11-15 shooting and Stanford spoiled former coach Mike Montgomery’s return to Maples Pavilion in charge of California with a 75-69 victory over its archrival. Snapping Cal’s nine-game winning streak in front of a sellout, raucous crowd, Anthony Goods added 19 points and Landry Fields contributed 15 points as Stanford avoided dropping three in a row for the first time since ending the 2006-07 season by losing three straight. The game featured 15 lead changes and 10 ties, as Hill’s basket with 5:35 left gave Stanford its biggest lead of the game at five points and the Cardinal built on that. Stanford shot 55.6 percent overall and limited Jerome Randle, the Pac-10’s second-leading scorer at 19.1 points per game, to just 13 points on 6-for-14 shooting with six costly turnovers.

stanford 75, Usc 63Feb. 28, 2009 – Stanford, CA

Anthony Goods scored 20 points, Kenny Brown matched his career high with four 3-pointers and Stanford ended its longest losing streak in 16 years with a 75-63 win over USC on Senior Night in a game with postseason implications for both teams. Lawrence Hill added 14 points, eight coming during a 21-6 run in the second half by the Cardinal that erased a six-point deficit and gave Stanford a 69-60 lead that was never challenged. Improving to 13-4 at home, Stanford trailed by 10 points with just over 13 minutes remaining and came up big from three-point territory with a 12-22 success rate. The win avenged a 70-69 loss to USC one month earlier, when Stanford’s attempt to win at the buzzer rimmed out. Josh Owens grabbed a career-best 10 boards to pace Stanford’s attack on the glass.

stanford 74, no. 21/21 arizona state 64Mar. 5, 2009 – Tempe, AZ

Needing a signature win to help boost its postseason chances, Stanford got exactly what it was looking for with a 74-64 road upset of No. 21/21 Arizona State during the final week of the regular season. Shaking off a 90-60 loss to the Sun Devils back in January, Stanford shot 50 percent and limited Arizona State to just 36 percent shooting and an 8-30 mark from long range. Landry Fields led the Cardinal with 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting and was one of four Cardinal players in double figures. Stanford won for the first time in eight confer-ence road games, and the Cardinal did it with defense. In the first 8 minutes, Stanford limited Arizona State to 0-6 shooting from the field with five turnovers and the Sun Devils’ first basket came with 11:50 to play in the first half. Jeff Pendergraph, who torched Stanford for 31 points on 14-19 shooting and 11 rebounds in the first meeting, totaled 15 points and 11 boards but was only 2-4 from the field with most of his damage coming at the foul line (11-14).

stanford 70, wichita state 56Mar. 23, 2009 – Wichita, KS

A first-half scoring barrage coupled with a stingy defensive effort resulted in a 70-56 Stan-ford victory in the quarterfinals of the 2009 CBI over Wichita State. The Cardinal recorded

its 20th win of the year in the process, signaling the 20th time in school history the feat has been accomplished. Stanford raced out to a huge lead and coasted the rest of the way,

thanks to a game-high 21 points on 8-13 shooting from Lawrence Hill while Anthony Goods added 18 points. Stanford shot 50.9 percent overall, including a blistering 60.7 percent in the first half, and held a 37-31 advantage in the rebounding department. The Cardinal was in front 42-26 at intermission, leading by as much as 20 points early on after Josh Owens

converted on the second of two free throws for a 30-10 lead with 6:17 remaining in the first half. Meanwhile,

a stifling Cardinal defense limited the Shockers to just 32.1 percent shooting from the field over the first 20

minutes.
