ong known as a leader in intercollegiate athletics,the Lone Star Conference (LSC) is an innovativeathletics conferencewhich aims to provide a superior

competitive experience for member institutions and to allowfor comprehensive development of student-athletes throughacademic services and life skills programming. The LSCcontinuestobuilduponitsproudhistorywhiledevelopingintooneofNCAADivisionII’smostsuccessfulconferences. Theleague’smissionistofosterstudentparticipationandsuccessamongmemberinstitutionsinDivisionIIintercollegiateathleticsasanintegralpartofeachinstitution’stotaleducationalprogram. The LSC pursues student-athlete developmentwith highest regard to theprinciples of academicexcellence,sportsmanship, ethical conduct, resourcefulness, communityservice,genderequity,anddiversity. TheLSC-foundedonApril25,1931-hasgrownfromafive-teamconferenceofTexas-basedschoolstoa15-memberleague that spans three states (Texas, Oklahoma and NewMexico).Theconferencewillexpandforthefirsttimesince1995withtheadditionoftheUniversityoftheIncarnateWordinJuly2010. The leaguecontinues toassist itsmember institutionsin the maintenance of intercollegiate athletic programs thatare compatible with the highest standards of education andcompetitivesports. Throughouttheleague’s78-yearhistory,variousinstitutionshavecompetedundertheLSCbanner.Today,onlyTexasA&MUniversity-Commerce (then East Texas State) remains fromtheoriginalgroupthatwasformedin1931whenNorthTexasState,SouthwestTexasState,SamHoustonStateandStephenF.Austin withdrew from the old Texas IntercollegiateAthleticAssociation. Themembershipalignmenthaschangedover theyears,withcurrentmembershavingbeenaddedineachof thepastfivedecades.TexasA&M-Kingsville(formerlyTexasA&I)joinedin1954,followedbyAngeloStatein1968andAbileneChristianin1973. ConferencemembershipremainedwithintheTexasbordersuntil1984whenEasternNewMexicowasadmitted.Sincethen,the LSC has grown to includemembers fromArkansas andOklahoma. CentralOklahoma(1987)andCameron(1988,1996)werethenextadditionsintheLSC’sexpansionphase,whileTexasWoman’s (1989) and previous members West Texas A&M(1986,1993)andTarletonState(1968,1994)joinedtheleaguesoonafter. Midwestern State was admitted early in 1995, and theleaguegrewagain later thatyearwith theacceptanceof fourmore Oklahoma schools - East Central, Northeastern State,SoutheasternOklahomaandSouthwesternOklahoma-alongwithHardingandOuachitaBaptistfromArkansas. Thatbroughttheleaguemembershipto17,butHardingandOBUdeparted the conferenceafter the1999-2000academicyeartobringabouttheLSC’scurrentlook. Otherpastmembersof theLSC includeTrinity,Houston,Lamar,HowardPayne,SulRossStateandMcMurry. Beginningwiththe1997-98academicyear,theleaguewasformedintotwodivisions-NorthandSouth-infootball,volleyball,basketball, baseball and softball. Divisional champions are

crowned according to results among division teams, with anoverallleaguechampionalsobeingdecidedeitherbycrossovergames or a postseason championship tournament. For thethirdstraightseason,volleyballandbaseballwillplaywithoutdivisions, utilizing a single conference standing to determinetheregular-seasonchampionandpostseasonseedings. While the LSC has maintained a long-standing traditionofcompetitiveathleticprogramsforitsmembers,manyteamsandindividualshavegoneontodistinguishthemselvesonthenational stage. Entering 2009-10, LSC member institutionshad collected more than 100 team national championships,including71inNCAADivisionII. TheLSCconductsconferencechampionshipsin16sports(eight men and eight women). Men’s championships includefootball, soccer, cross country, basketball, baseball, trackand field, tennis and golf. Women’s titles are determined involleyball,soccer,crosscountry,basketball,softball,trackandfield,tennisandgolf. The conference office is located in Richardson, Texas,a northern suburb of Dallas. The 2009 Championship started with women’s quarterfinal action. All four games were decided by five or less points as Southeastern Oklahoma, West Texas A&M, Texas A&M-Commerce and Central Oklahoma advanced to the semifinals.

Midwestern State celebrated after capturing the 2009 men’s championship with a close 66-60 victory over Southwestern Oklahoma.

West Texas A&M earned their 10th overall and second straight women’s championship title with an 66-59 triumph over Central Oklahoma in 2009.

UCO returns seven lettermen from last year’s 24-6 teamthat made a second consecutive NCAA South Central regionalappearance.TheBronchosareledbyseniorguardEricCazenave,whoaveraged11.8pointsand3.7reboundsagamelastseason. Wilkerson, Burch picked for men’s basketball preseason honorsTwo Lone Star Conference men’s basketball standouts werehonoredastheleague’sPreseasonPlayersoftheYearfor2009-10,asannouncedbytheleagueofficeinOctober. Texas A&M-Commerce senior forward Justin Wilkerson wastabbedastheNorthDivisionPreseasonPlayeroftheYear,whileAngelo State senior forward Shavar Burch earned the SouthDivisionaccolade. The league’s preseason awards were selected by a vote ofconference head coaches and sports information directors, inadditiontoseveralmediarepresentativesfromthethroughouttheregion. Wilkersonreceivedsixofthe19votesintheNorth,whileBurchwasthechoiceonsixofthe20ballotssubmittedintheSouth.
