uilt in the heart of Minnesota, it was inevitable that
Shattuck-St. Mary’s School would enjoy a long history of
hockey on its campus. The first recorded official hockey team
at Shattuck School banded together in 1925 to skate on a small
pond in the area where Clapp Dormitory now stands. Over the
years, hockey remained a tenacious presence at Shattuck School,
and in 1968 the campus’ first indoor ice rink was built–a lofty
arched construction now affectionately referred to as “The
Barn.” Throughout the late 1980s, the SSM hockey program
saw hard times as school enrollment dropped and players were
harder to come by. For a few years, SSM partnered in a co-op
program with Faribault High School in order to get a full team
on the ice and in 1989 had only two players on the roster.
Then, in 1990, the school embarked on a visionary plan to bring
hockey back to SSM–stronger than ever. In the first year of
SSM’s new phase of hockey, players were recruited from all
over the country to join in the building of a new program.
In its second year, the fledgling program had already garnered
enough attention to add a second team. By 1993, SSM had
outgrown the local high school hockey league and expanded
its season to include a full schedule of USA Hockey games
and tournaments. In 1996, the School fielded its first girls
hockey team, and the top boys midget team skated to its very
first National Championship tournament. Three short
years later, in 1999, the Boys Prep team, led by Andy
Murray, former Head Coach of the Los Angeles Kings,
kicked off what would become a tradition of excellence
by winning its first Tier I Boys U18 National Championship
title. The Boys Prep team has since won four more
National Championships–in 2001, 2003, 2005, and 2007.
Also in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2009, the Girls Prep team
capped its seasons as Tier I Women’s U19 National
Champions.
hese days, the SSM hockey program is made up of eight
teams playing a seven-month schedule of 50-70 games per
season. The two girls teams, two bantam teams, and four
midget teams practice daily on two campus ice rinks, and
compete in games and tournaments around the United States
and Canada. Under the leadership of Director of Hockey Tom
Ward, supported by an incredible staff of coaches, trainers, and
teachers, the SSM hockey program has grown into the premier
program in the United States. As Sports Illustrated magazine
put it, “Shattuck-St. Mary’s School is to high school hockey
what Harvard is to law school.”

For the fourth time in the last five years, theGirls Prep team has captured the USA HockeyU-19 National title. In April of 2009, both theU-16 and U-19 girls’ teams traveled to Rochester,New York to take their shot at their respectivechampionships.
The preliminary round found each team fairingvery well. The U-16 girls went 2-1 in pool playand advanced to the quarterfinals. They met astrong opponent in Detroit’s Belle Tire, howeverpersevered and won the game 2-1, sending themto the semifinals against Team Illinois. Unfortunatelythe girls could not overcome the 2-1 deficit andwere eliminated from the tournament. The teamended up with an impressive 40-7-6 record, the best in the team’s history as well as its best finish ever, ending up the 3rd best team inthe nation.
The Girls Prep team rolled through the round-robin play and headed into the quarterfinals as the number 1 seed in the tournament. They wontheir quarterfinal and semifinal matches 7-2 and 5-3 respectively and set up the championshipgame against the Chicago Mission, the defendingnational champions.
The first period was very evenly matched withboth teams having good scoring chances. Withjust under five minutes remaining in the period, senior Jessica Cohen knocked in a power playgoal to put the Sabres ahead 1-0. That scorelasted one full period before senior Dru Burnsrifled a high slap shot past the Chicago goalie. The Sabres went into the third period with a two-goal advantage, however it was still any-body’s game. With just over eight minutes toplay, Brianna Decker ’09 converted on a nicepass from Amanda Kessel ’10 to put the game almost out of reach. In a last ditch effort, the Mission pulled theirgoalie. Even though they did finally score, the Sabres got two empty net goals to secure the championship.
The Sabres showed their impressive special teams play as they scored four power play goals and did not give up agoal on their nine penalty kills in the game. Coach Gordie Stafford attributed the team’s success to their depth, conditioning, and attitude. He added, “It was a challenging year because of absences and injuries, so we hardly ever had a full roster. We just came together at the right time, in large part to our senior leadership especiallyBrianna Decker, Jess Cohen and Dru Burns,” all of whom had at least two points in the championship game.Stafford also praised the play of senior goalie Becca Ruegsegger, who had 38 saves in the final game. Decker andjunior Amanda Kessel were the leading scorers of the tournament racking up 16 and 19 points respectively in sixgames. The team finished the season with a record of 43-12-3.

Welcome to the 2009-10 Shattuck-St. Mary’s Hockey Season!
The 2009-10 hockey season is shaping up to be one of our most competitive seasons for all of ourteams here at Shattuck-St. Mary’s School. The student-athletes who are in our program this year are asstrong as we have ever had. We are all looking forward to following their progress throughout the season.
The Girls Prep team won a national championship last season. All of the teams that went to national tour-naments had very strong showings at their respective tournaments.
The season proved to be one of the strongest in the history of the program. Overall, all of our teamsmoved along very nicely throughout the year and the coaching staff was pleased with the level of play and progress of each individual and team.
All of us involved with Shattuck-St. Mary’s hockey are excited about great things happening in our schooland hockey program. We want to wish all of the teams and coaching staff the best of luck this year!

Former Boys Prep star Sidney Crosby became the first ex-SSM player to win the Stanley Cup when hisPittsburgh Penguins beat the Detroit Red Wings in thedeciding Game seven of the finals of the NHL playoffs.Crosby, who helped lead the Boys Prep team to anational Championship in 2003, ended the playoffs asthe 2nd highest scorer in the league.
There were five teams in the playoffs with former SSM players in their lineups, including the final fourteams. Jonathan Toews ’05 of the Chicago Blackhawks,Patrick Eaves and Joe Corvo of the Carolina Hurricanes,Ty Conklin ’93 of the Detroit Red Wings, as well asCrosby made it to their conference finals. The Penguinsswept the Hurricanes to advance to the Stanley Cupfinals where they met the defending champion DetroitRed Wings in a rematch of last year’s final. Crosby netted three of his thirty-one points in the finals, including two points in the Penguins game four win.
In just four years of playing in the NHL, Crosby hasracked up many awards and accolades. Some of hisaccomplishments are, winning the Hart Trophy for the league MVP, the Lester B. Pearson award for theMVP voted by the players, the scoring title, as well asbecoming the youngest player in league history toscore 100 points, which he did in his rookie season. He can now add a Stanley Cup to his resume, becomingthe youngest captain in NHL history to win the covetedtrophy. Crosby is also a shoe-in to be on the CanadianOlympic Team in 2010. With his amazing skill, SidneyCrosby will likely have a long and promising NHLcareer. It would not be a surprise to see him win morechampionships in the future.
