The men’s team returns a core group of players that know what it takes to get to the top. Last season, the Colonials swept all seven A-10 opponents in the regular season, including shutout victories over Duquesne, Richmond and Dayton. The Colonials rolled into the A-10 Championship on a six-match winning streak, and defeated Saint Joseph’s in the first round. GW fell to St. Bonaventure in the second round, but bounced back to win the third-place match over Saint Louis. Juniors Erik Hannah, Yan Levinski and Chris Kushma, all named to 2009 A-10 All-Conference teams, return with more experience and confidence from the fall 2009 slate. Kushma closed the fall with an 11-2 record, bringing home titles from the UVa Invitational and Georgetown Classic. Last season’s team MVP, sophomore Ugur Atalay had a great freshman season as A-10 coaches tabbed him the 2009 Most Outstanding Rookie. It was a repeat award for GW as Levinski earned the honor in 2008. Atalay won all of his No. 2 singles matches in the conference tournament to finish 15-6 overall. Sophomores Richard Blumenfeld, Andy Erickson, and junior Arya Vayghan all challenged and motivated each other to keep bringing their best play to the court. Blumenfeld had great success as a freshman at the No. 1 doubles position. Erickson’s season was shortened due to injuries, but he was unde- feated last season. Vayghan started and ended the season strong, after overcoming illness in the middle of the year. Freshman Ken Mkrtchian and walk-on Garrett Lockhart paired up in the fall at the Navy Invitational and took a share of the title, dropping only one match. Mkrtchian has the power and the skills to challenge any- one on the squad for a starting spot this year. This season’s schedule has the Colonials matched up against more ranked teams and individuals, including William & Mary, Columbia and Radford. Splitting the schedule between Montclair Country Club and the Mount Vernon Campus, the Colonials’ home matches include area rivals Georgetown and Howard. The 2010 Atlantic 10 Men’s Tennis Championship will be held April 16-18 at Club4Life in Monroeville, PA. 2009-10 ROSTER Name Yr. Ht.
