The home of the University of California women’s swimming and diving team is the Spieker Aquatics Complex, one

of the finest outdoor facilities in the United States.

Completed in the fall of 1982, the $1-million dollar facility was made possible through the Cal Sports ’80s project and was dedicated to former California water polo

letterman Warren “Ned” Spieker Jr., who provided the major portion of the funding for the project.

The facility replaced the old Harmon pool, which had stood on the same site since the early 1930s. Included in the extensive remodeling project was the joining of the two existing tanks into one 50-meter by 25-yard pool of deep water, suitable for national

the home oF chamPions

and international swimming and water polo competition. Also included in the reconstruc-tion was the installation of new piping and filtration systems, lighting modifications and increased spectator seating.

The Spieker Aquatics Complex is located adjacent to Haas Pavilion at the corner of Bancroft and Dana streets on the Berkeley campus.

Spieker aquatics Complex has played host to some of the world’s best swimmers, including olympic and Cal swimmer Emily Silver.

record

Prior to season-ending triumphs at the NCAA and Pac-10 Champion-ships, California improved gradually

throughout regular-season competition with a typically challenging schedule of Pac-10 opponents as well as a pair of national invi-tationals. The Golden Bears produced a 4-4 dual-meet record, winning a season-opening meet against Pacific, 147.5-103.5, on Oct. 11 in Stockton, Calif., before opening the home schedule with a 175-123 loss to Texas on Oct. 18 at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Bears won their conference opener against Washington, 137-119, in their final home meet of 2008. They next competed in the Art Adamson Invitational at Texas A&M’s Student Rec Center Natatorium in College Station, Texas, from Nov. 21-23, winning the meet with 1,024 points. They closed 2008 by finishing second behind the host Bulldogs in the Georgia Fall Invitational, held from Dec. 3-5 in Athens, Ga.

Against Pacific, the Bears won eight of 14 events, including the first three – the 200-yard medley relay, 1000 freestyle (junior Blake Hayter) and 200 free (junior Lauren Boyle). Freshmen Sara Isakovic and Liv Jensen opened their Cal careers by swim-ming on the Cal B squad, which was fourth, in the 200-medley relay. Isakovic later placed second to senior Dana Vollmer in the 50 freestyle (23.80-23.96) and clocked the best time (56.26) in the 100 butterfly, though it was an exhibition swim. Jensen later swam

in the 100 breaststroke (5th) and posted the fastest time (51.88) in the 100 free, though she swam it as an exhibition.

The Bears earned a No. 5 ranking in the Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) poll that came out two days before the meet with No. 7 Texas. Cal won four events – the 100 backstroke (se-nior Lauren Rogers), 50 free (Jensen), 500 free (Isakovic) and 400-free relay.

The Bears won their last dual meet with the now defunct Washington pro-gram, coached by former Cal assistant Whitney Hite. Isakovic, swimming in her first collegiate 1000 free, won the race in a time of 10:03.46. Sara Isakovic

Cal opened the New Year on the road and split meets with Arizona and Arizona State, falling to the Wildcats, 178-120, on Jan. 23 in Tucson, Ariz., and defeating the Sun Devils, 162-91, on Jan. 24 in Tempe, Ariz. The Bears closed the regular season with three home meets, losing to USC, 152.5-147.5, beating UCLA, 172-123, and ultimately losing to rival Stanford, 162-129.

In Cal’s first action after the winter break, Vollmer won three races (100 and 200 but-

terflies and 200 free) and Boyle won two (500 and 1000 frees)

against Arizona. The 1000 was a tight battle, with Boyle edging Wildcat Susana Helms by two hundredths of

a second (9:53.61-9:53.63). One of the highlights

against the Bruins was Cal (senior Madison Kennedy, sophomore Hannah Wilson, Jen-sen and Vollmer) setting a Spieker record in the 200-free relay with a time of 1:31.49.

Against the Cardi-nal, Cal set three pool

records at Spieker, with Vollmer setting two in winning the 100 (48.32) and 200 (1:43.66) frees and Jensen claim-ing the 50-free record (22.18) with a victory. The 50- and 200-free times were also Cal dual-meet records.

Vollmer also won the 100 fly, junior Heather White claimed the 200 IM and the Bears won the 400-free relay. Cal said goodbye to the five senior Bears – Kennedy, Natalie La Rochelle, Rogers, Vollmer and Emily Verdin – competing in the final home meet of their careers.

Eleven days after its setback against Stanford to end the dual-meet sea-son, Cal moved on to Federal Way,

Wash., to compete in the Pac-10 Champion-ships held Feb. 25-28 at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center. The Bears produced a complete team effort, garner-ing points from several team members to compile 1550 points and win their first Pac-10 title. Along the way, Dana Vollmer won two individual titles – the 100- and 200-yard freestyles – and swam on two relay winners – the 400- and 800-free relays.

Vollmer posted a meet-record and NCAA automatic qualifying time of 47.19 to win the 100 and an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:42.68 to capture the 200. Junior Lauren Boyle won a fifth Cal title, repeating as the conference’s 1650-free champion with a school-record and NCAA B qualifying time of 15:56.93.

In the 800-free relay, Vollmer got the Bears off to a great start with a 200-free American-record, NCAA-record and NCAA automatic

place behind Kennedy (21.87) on Cal’s all-time 50-free list and made Jensen the first American woman under the age 18 to swim under 22 seconds in the sprint. Wilson finished third (22.15), Dagg placed fourth (22.30) and Kennedy ranked seventh (22.48).

In diving, freshman Alissa Barker col-lected Cal’s best showing, a fourth-place finish on the platform final with a score of 237.90. Barker also posted Cal’s best finish on the three-meter springboard, taking 17th (210.05). Bears freshman Molly Hayes was 14th on the one-meter board (220.60).

qualifying time of 1:41.53. Vollmer edged the previous American record (1:41.66) set by former Cal star Natalie Coughlin in 2007. Senior Madison Kennedy, Boyle and sophomore Hannah Wilson combined with Vollmer to set then-school and conference records with their winning time of 6:56.87 to give Cal its sixth straight win in the 800-free relay at Pac-10s. In the final race of the meet, the foursome of Vollmer, sophomore Erica Dagg, Kennedy and Wilson set a then-NCAA record of 3:11.05 to claim the 400-free relay.

Liv Jensen continued her coming out party, leading a trio of Bears in a 2-3-4 finish in the 50 free.

Jensen swam a time of 21.94 to finish a close second to Arizona’s Lara Jackson (21.36). The time moved her into second

Several days after their triumph in Washington, the Bears headed back to College Station, this time for

the NCAA Women’s Swimming and Div-ing Championships. They continued their successful end of season run, winning five national titles and posting a school-record 411.5 points en route to their first NCAA team championship. Cal, which had posted a program-best third-place finish in 2007, beat second-place Georgia by 10 points in 2009. Dana Vollmer concluded a spectacular senior season with five NCAA championships: the 100-yard freestyle, 200 free, 400-free relay, 800-free relay and team title. Her winning 100-free time of 47.17 was just .17 seconds off of Natalie Coughlin’s school record and ranked Vollmer second all time at Cal.

Cal won three of its NCAA titles on March 20, with junior Amanda Sims capturing Cal’s second 100-butterfly crown in three years with a time of 51.28, Vollmer posting an NCAA Championship- meet record of 1:42.01 to claim the 200 free and the four-some of Sara Isakovic, Hannah Wilson, Liv Jensen and Vollmer taking home the 800-free relay in a U.S. Open-, NCAA- and NCAA Championship meet-record time of 6:52.69. In the 50 free, Wilson was third (51.47) and Vollmer, who won the 100 fly at NCAAs in 2007, was fourth (51.69). Sims’ prelim time of 51.12 ranked her as the all-time third-fastest Bear in the event.

with a prelim time of 4:36.79, which broke another Coughlin record, and then placed fourth in the final with a time of 4:37.79. Junior Alexandra Ellis set a school record in the 200 breaststroke with her 10th-place time of 2:09.51.

In all, 11 Bears collected All-America hon-ors from NCAAs: Vollmer, Sims, Kennedy, Isakovic, Wilson, Jensen, Ellis, Boyle, Erica Dagg, senior Lauren Rogers and sophomore Tara Thomas.

After the Cal program’s best season, Dana Vollmer was named the 2009 NCAA Swimmer of the Year, Pac-10

Swimmer of the Year and Honda Sports Award winner for swimming, and Teri McK-eever earned NCAA and Pac-10 Coach of the Year awards. Freshman Liv Jensen also earned the Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year Award. Vollmer was also nominated for a 2009 ESPY Award in the Best Collegiate Female Athlete category. Cal placed 13 Bears on the Pac-10 All-Academic teams, including three – Natalie La Rochelle, Tara Thomas and Emily Verdin – on the first team.amanda Sims

Jensen, Wilson, Madi-son Kennedy and Vollmer combined to set a school record in the 200-free relay, posting a time of 1:26.48 to surpass the school record of 1:27.05 the Bears set in the relay prelim earlier in the day. Cal’s relay narrowly finished second behind Arizona (1:26.20).

methods. Under McKeever’s tutelage, the Golden Bears have produced six Pac-10 Swimmers of the Year, including three-time winner Natalie Coughlin and 2009 honoree Dana Vollmer, and 13 consecutive top-10 NCAA finishes. She has amassed an impres-sive 141-49 dual meet record in her tenure with Cal entering this season.

Last season was the program’s best ever. McKeever coached Dana Vollmer to a spec-tacular end to her college career, as Vollmer was named the 2009 NCAA Swimmer of the Year and Pac-10 Swimmer of the Year and won the Honda Sports Award for Swimming. Cal produced three individual NCAA titles

“(Teri) McKeever also is known as a coach who turns previously unnoticed swim-mers into major talents, and talented-but-burned-out swimmers into Olympians and world champions. Current and former pupils include Olympians Dana Vollmer, Haley Cope, Staciana Stitts—and Natalie Coughlin, who credits McKeever with resurrecting Coughlin’s swimming career and helping her to win five medals, including two Golds, at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Tall, lean, and tanned, 45-year-old Teri McKeever strides the pool deck imperiously, ash-blond curls tucked into a faded Cal baseball cap, stopwatch cords dangling from the pockets of her blue sweatpants. One hand clutches the first of her three breakfast Diet Pepsis. (“It’s like coffee,” she says. “Just cold.”) It’s a fairly typical 6 a.m. practice at Spieker Aquatics Complex, except there’s no fog, so the rising sun is lighting up the church across the street and the top of the eight-story Unit 3 dorms. Fifteen swim-capped heads lining the shaded north edge of the pool are turned in the direction of the coach as the swimmers rest between sets.

This is McKeever’s laboratory, where dance class meets praxis. Here “Teri’s ways” come to life in a blend of specific commands to move body part A to spot B, with other general orders to “take care of the water” and “wait for the water” and “breathe more life into your body.”

Regarded as one of the best swimming mentors in the United States, Teri McKeever begins her 18th year as head coach of the University of California’s women’s swimming and diving program. She ended her 17th season as the 2009 NCAA Coach of the Year after leading the Golden Bears’ to their first NCAA team championship and becoming the first woman coach to be credited with an NCAA swimming and diving team title. She also claimed the 2009 Pac-10 Coach of the Year award after leading Cal to its first Pac-10 team championship.

McKeever has taken the Cal program to new heights and is often regarded in the coaching circle as the sport’s influential innovator because of her unique training

(Vollmer in the 100- and 200-yard freestyles and Amanda Sims in the 100 butterfly), two NCAA relay champions (400- and 800-free relays) and two NCAA/U.S. Open records (400- and 800-free relays) and scored its most points (411.5) at the NCAA meet in school history. Nine Bears emerged as All-Americans and two earned honorable mention All-America honors after NCAAs. The Bears also won five Pac-10 titles (Vollmer in the 100- and 200- frees; Lauren Boyle in the 1650 free; and the 400- and 800-free relays). Another McKeever pupil, Liv Jensen, earned the Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year accolade.mckeever as

She was the first woman coach on the U.S. Olympic swimming team and the first woman to be named head coach of the national team at a major international meet (the 2006 Pan Pacific meet in British Columbia). She also served as an assistant coach for the U.S. team during World Championship competition in 2003, 2005 and 2007. Other international coaching duties included as-sistant roles with the 2001 Goodwill Games and the 2002 Pan Pacific Championships.

In addition to those historical milestones, McKeever is above all proud to have trained

the best of the best on the international scene. McKeever has helped guide Coughlin to 11 Olympic medals, including three gold, alumna Haley Cope to a silver medal and the entire U.S. swimming team to 28 medals, including 12 gold. McKeever also coached Staciana Stitts, who became the first Cal woman swimmer to earn an Olympic gold medal since Mary T. Meagher in 1984, when Stitts was a member of the United States’ gold medal-winning 400-meter medley relay at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Prior to making her mark on Cal women’s swimming, McKeever had strong ties to the Pac-10 Conference, both as an athlete and as a coach. A former USC All-American herself, she competed in the NCAA Cham-pionships meet all four years while at USC and helped the Trojans to four consecutive NCAA top-10 finishes. She earned All-America honors in both 1980 and 1981. As a senior in 1983, McKeever was named USC’s Outstanding Student-Athlete. She worked as an assistant coach at USC from 1984-87, helping develop several All-Americans.

The Southern California prod-uct graduated from USC in 1983 with a B.S. in education with two teaching credentials (multiple subject, secondary life science) and also earned a masters degree in athletic administration in 1987. McKeever’s father, Mike, was an All-American lineman for the Trojans’ football team in 1959. McKeever comes from a family of 10 children (she is the oldest), all with varied athletic backgrounds.

McKeever married Jerry Romani in the spring of 2007. The couple resides in El Cerrito, Calif.

in the collegiate, national and international arenas under Herdt. Most recently, Cowboys junior Mark Murdoch finished 12th in the platform at the 2009 AT&T National Diving Championships. Herdt has international experience, having mentored former Cowgirl Saara Haapanen as a Finland national team assistant coach, including at the 2007 FINA USA Diving Grand Prix.

Herdt sent three Cowgirls and one men’s diver – Murdoch, who was eighth on the three-meter board – to the finals of the 2009 NCAA Zone E Diving Championships and coached Stephanie Ortiz to a strong junior season. Ortiz won the three-meter springboard, placed second at one meter and finished eighth on the platform in the 2009 MWC Championships en route to the MWC Co-Diver of the Year award.

A native of East Lansing, Mich., Herdt also earned MWC coaching kudos in 2006, for coaching the Wyoming women, and in 2008, for coaching the Wyoming men. He produced two other conference champions at Wyoming: Haapanen won the women’s one-meter title in 2007 and Kyle Bogner, as a true freshman, won the men’s one-meter crown in 2008. Haapanen’s 2007 champion-ship marked the first time a Cowgirl swimmer or diver won an individual MWC title.

Herdt has worked at various college div-ing camps, including the Texas Longhorns Camp in the summers of 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. He coached the Minnesota Diving Club and the Twin City Diving Club in Min-neapolis, Minn., from 2000 to 2004.

A 2004 graduate of Minnesota, Herdt served as co-captain of the Golden Gophers as a senior during the 2003-04 season. He earned academic All-Big Ten accolades in his last two years at Minnesota.

B erkeley is a part of the San Francisco Bay Area major metropoli-

tan area of approximately 7.2 million people. The region is one of the most beautiful in the world and includes the major cities of San Fran-cisco and Oakland, as well as Berkeley, home of the world-renowned University of California. Just south are San Jose and the Silicon Valley, home to many of the world’s high-tech companies. The Bay Area also lies within easy driving distance of the high Sierra resorts of Lake Tahoe and Yosemite, the Monterey/Carmel peninsula, the world famous Napa wine country and the spectacular Mendocino Coast.

Everyone knows San Fran-cisco, a.k.a. “The City,” from the numerous photographs, movies and television shows that capture its magic and beauty. It is a city built on a series of more than 40 hills, offering panoramic views of every kind. The hub of a nine-county complex and the fi-nancial and insurance capital of the world, San Francisco has a resident population of just over 800,000 and is situated on a 46.7 square mile peninsula bounded on

the west by the Pacific Ocean, the north by the Golden Gate strait, and from north to east by the San Francisco Bay. San Francisco has been named the world’s top city twice and the top city in the U.S. in 18 of the last 19 years by Condé Nast Traveler.

The San Francisco Bay is spanned by two landmarks, the Golden Gate and San Francisco-Oakland Bay bridges, and graced by four islands: Alcatraz, Angel, Yerba Buena and Treasure. The area is easily navigated by car, BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit), bus or ferry, making it easily accessible to all.

Located across the Bay Bridge from San Francisco, Oakland is a city of over 400,000, jam-packed with exciting attractions, stimulating arts and an ideal climate. Oakland’s charm exceeds its man-made wonders, as its tumbling hills, vast forests, hiking and riding trails, beautiful lakes and numerous parks provide a natural escape for those who prefer nature over an urban environment.

Berkeley, just a 12-mile drive from San Francisco, is situated on 17.7 square miles with a population of just under 103,000 people. A study in contrasts, Berkeley is a small town with a big city character. With its world-renowned university, global population and rich diversity of cultural arts, Berkeley reflects and affects the rest of the country.

Sports fans can see it all in the Bay Area - professional football (San Francisco 49ers, Oakland Raiders), professional basketball (Golden State Warriors), professional baseball (San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics), professional hockey (San Jose Sharks) and outstanding collegiate com-petition (six Division I schools).

The UniversiTy of California

SIMPLY ThE BEST

T here is no other way to aptly describeAmerica’s top public university. There is no other way to describe one of the elite academic settings

in the world – especially one that also includes one of America’s most successful athletic departments.

The University of California blends the best of all worlds. Overlooking the scenic San Francisco Bay and ranked as the nation’s top public university by the U.S. News and World Report, the flagship campus of the state of California also features an athletic program that annu-ally finishes among the leaders in the Directors’ Cup standings, which rates the overall success of America’s collegiate athletic departments.

Cal attracts what many believe to be the finest applicant pool in the United States. The university features a diverse student body population. The University of California offers 351 degree programs, and 35 of the school’s 36 graduate programs are ranked among America’s Top 10. Cal’s 35 programs among the Top 10 is No. 1 among all universi-ties in the country, as is its 32 “distinguished” programs, as rated by the National Research Council.

The library is ranked third in the country, as judged by the Association of Research Libraries with 10 million volumes in 32 campus libraries.

The faculty features seven Nobel Laureates, 135 members of the National Academy of Sciences, 28 Mac-Arthur Fellows, 74 Fulbright Scholars, four Pulitzer Prize winners and more Guggenheim Fellows (359) than any other university in America.

The Student-Athlete High Performance Center, now un-der construction, is expected to be completed prior to the 2011 season. The 142,000 square foot facility will house locker rooms, offices and meeting rooms, as well as areas for strength and conditioning, sports medicine, nutrition and academics for football and 12 other intercollegiate sports.

The building is the physical manifestation of Cal’s High Performance Initiative, a unique program that challenges student-athletes to reach their level of optimal performance through strategic and efficient application of resources. Using cutting-edge technology and a multidisciplinary ap-proach, the cornerstone principles of the HPI are communi-cation, integration and information.

Memorial Stadium, considered by many to be one of the most beautiful settings for collegiate football, was originally constructed with funds donated by alumni, faculty, students and fans. At the time, Robert Gordon Sproul, who became UC president in 1930, said that the stadium “stands in simple dignity, beauty and strength.”

Now, plans are being finalized to renovate the 86-year-old structure, starting with the west side, to create programmat-ic, game day and fan amenity improvements while respect-ing the architecture and character of the historic structure.

Donors have demonstrated their backing of the privately-funded project through their commitment to the Endowment Seat Program (ESP), a first-of-its-kind effort in major college athletics to secure the financial future for the Athletic Depart-ment. ESP will provide a long-term, sustaining endowment that could grow to $1 billion over the next 30 years and will be used to fund annual operating needs for Cal’s student-athletes.

While the California football program has produced school records of six straight bowl appearances and four consecutive bowl triumphs as part of

59 wins overall in the last seven years, the mission for Cal football is: To EDUCATE and GRADUATE all football student-athletes with a meaningful degree that will sup-port their future successes in whatever field they choose.

Cal’s unique “Academic Game Plan” (AGP) is a program established by head coach Jeff Tedford to ensure success in the classroom as well as on the field. AGP, under the direction of Cal’s director of student-athlete development, consists of players meeting regularly with coaches and counselors to review coursework and assignments. Play-ers are given an “Academic Game Planner,” which they are required to keep up-to-date. The point of AGP is to ap-proach academics just like a game, with a plan. The play-ers would never go into a game situation without studying film, having a plan, practicing and preparation. Tedford and the Cal staff want student-athletes to approach aca-demics the same way.

aTHLETiC STUDy CEnTErThe Athletic Study Center, which is

housed within the Division of Under-graduate Education, is the tutorial and academic support program for the nearly 900 student-athletes at Cal. Centrally located in the Cesar Chavez Student Center, the program provides a spacious and comfortable area for quiet study, individual classrooms for tutorials, and a computer lab for word processing and required course work.

TUToriaL ProGraMThe tutorial program promotes and

enhances students’ academics skills and progress by providing individu-al tutoring, group workshops, study groups, credit courses and intensive special programs. The Athletic Study Center has between 50-60 tutors on staff per semester to guarantee that students receive the best possible support. Tutorial sessions are offered at night to enable student-athletes to receive help after practices when they have more time to devote to studying.

Of the 18 players signed in 2002 in coach Tedford’s first class, 15 (83%) graduated within five years. A total of 20 players over the past 10 years have earned gradu-ate degrees while playing and 10 of those players who earned graduate degrees have gone on to play in the NFL, including Adimchinobe Echemandu, Tyler Fredrickson, Scott Fujita, Nick Harris, L.P. Ladouceur, Alex Mack and John Welbourn.

For the 2005-06 academic year, the Cal football team achieved the highest score possible (1000) in the Academ-ic Progress Rate (APR). This past year, Cal posted a multi-year score of 970, second among Pac-10 schools. In addi-tion, 74 student-athletes on the football team have earned Pac-10 All-Academic honors in the Tedford era.

aDViSinG ProGraMSThe advising programs offer a broad

range of services to meet the unique needs of Cal’s student-athletes, which include assistance in understanding and complying with university, college and NCAA requirements, the devel-opment of time management skills and the resolution of personal issues unique to student-athletes.
