1. LAMISE AL‐BASHA, ROCKFORD (KEITH)  Lamise Al‐Basha’s basketball coach always use to remind her that “your mind is the strongest part of your body.”   It took a while, but Lamise finally realized exactly what her coach meant, as her natural ability was often stifled by her own mental barriers.  “I struggled with overcoming the mental toughness aspect of the game,” wrote Lamise in her application essay. “I was constantly doubting myself and played without confidence. Finally, I came to understand what my coach had been telling me. Your mind only knows what you tell it. It took time to fight through the mental barriers, but I am a better, stronger person for it.”  A look at Lamise’s resume over the past four makes it hard to believe that there are any barriers that have managed to slow her down academically or in sports and activities.  Athletically, she participates in basketball, soccer and tennis and qualified for the 2009 IHSA State Finals in doubles play in the latter as a senior. She has also been involved in her school’s WYSE Team (Worldwide Youth in Science & Engineering), Math Team, International Club, Ambassadors Club, Model United Nations, Honor Council and Red Ribbon Committee.  Despite all of her extracurricular involvement, the Senior Class President somehow manages to find the time to volunteer at a local YMCA, serve as a camp counselor at Camp Experience, attend the Covenant Harbor Leadership Conference, annually compete in a horseback riding tournament and visit nursing homes with the Glamour Girls group.   Lamise’s many honors include the Bella Emerson Keith Scholarship, having her work displayed in the Rock Valley Art Show, the National Latin Award, Presidential Academic Excellence recognition, Tri‐M Music Honor Society, French Honor Society and being named an AP Scholar with Distinction.     Keith School History Teacher Bradley C. Stott has watched Lamise immerse herself in all that high school has to offer over the past four years. “She has been driven to take advantage of every personal and academic learning opportunity afforded to her. Lamise has been an incredible student, but she is an even better person.”  A two‐year National Honor Society member with a 4.0 grade point average (4.3 scale), Lamise Al‐Basha represents Board Division No. 4 and her principal is Dr. Ronald Lee.            

2. SARAH BACH, BARRINGTON  Of all the things that the sport of track & field has given back to Sarah Bach, nothing she has learned has been more important than the ability to clear hurdles, both literally and figuratively speaking.   Despite having never run hurdles upon joining the high school track & field team, Sarah was invited to join a team within the team known as the Hurdle Crew. Becoming a competent performer in the hurdle events was mentally and physically taxing, but Sarah’s hard work began to pay dividends in her races. Just as she began to pick up the technique and experience success, a stress fracture in her leg created a disappointing setback that took her away from her newfound passion. Dedicated to her team and teammates, Sarah fought through the pain and was able to successfully contribute in other events, helping the Fillies win the 2007 IHSA Track & Field Class AA State Championship. Sarah has since taken on a leadership role in one of the state’s top programs, as Barrington has followed with runner‐up and 13th place team finishes in the state finals.   “Becoming a hurdler took over a year and there was plenty of frustration, tears and sloppy races before I realized I could indeed do it,” wrote Sarah in her application essay. “I now understand the importance of being mentally strong. My love‐hate relationship with the hurdles has taught me how to overcome obstacles and ultimately nothing truly great will ever happen until I start to believe, in my own heart, that I’m capable of doing what seems impossible.”  Sarah has encountered few academic hurdles at Barrington, where she also participates in cross country, the Code Red Leadership Program and is a Fellowship of Christian Athletes leadership team member. The Illinois State Scholar was a National Merit finalist, an AP Scholar with Distinction and a Presidential Volunteer Service Award winner.   Barrington Science Teacher Karen Enright has seen Sarah display the determination that has allowed her to clear all of life’s hurdles so far. “If I had one word to describe Sarah it would be serious. She is serious about life, always working to the best of her ability and budgeting her time to allow her to participate in a variety of extracurriculars.”  A National Honor Society member with a 4.6 grade point average (4.0 scale), Sarah Bach ranks in the Top 5 percent of her senior class. She represents Board of Directors Division No. 2 and her principal is Stephan McWilliams.                

3. ELIZABETH BELL, ANNA‐JONESBORO  Elizabeth Bell’s road to an individual state championship in the 50‐yard freestyle at the 2009 IHSA Girls Swimming & Diving State Finals should become a thing of legend at Anna‐Jonesboro High School. If not because Anna‐Jonesboro has just under 600 students and the other 11 competitors she bested in the event came from school’s with a combined average enrollment of 2,595 students, then because Elizabeth Bell is the Anna‐Jonesboro swim team.  Elizabeth’s high school does not have a swim team, a pool or a coach, which meant after starting her swimming career as a two‐year old in a hotel swimming pool, the road to a state title literally became US‐51. Elizabeth traveled an hour daily to train at Southern Illinois University, where she honed her craft en route to becoming the southernmost state champion in IHSA swimming history.  “I learned that the love of a sport need not be crushed by a lack of essentials, like not having a team or a pool,” wrote Elizabeth in her application essay. “It became a dream of mine to one day be a state champion and I have never regretted my decision to focus on swimming.”  Elizabeth’s commitment to swimming did not limit her participation opportunities elsewhere, as she was also a member of the Lady Wildcats cross country, track & field and scholastic bowl teams, while also participating in Student Council, Spanish Club, Mu Alpha Theta, Math Team and the school band. The Illinois State Scholar was also a National Merit Semifinalist, a Wendy’s High School Heisman state finalist and received Academic All‐American awards from USA Swimming and the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association.  Anna‐Jonesboro Director of Guidance Carol Carter has been awed by Elizabeth’s approach to her studies and sports. “I don’t know how she is able to accomplish as much as she does within a 24 hour period, but I do know that Elizabeth will continue to excel in all possible areas in the future.”  A two‐year member of the National Honor Society with a 4.7 grade point average (4.0 scale), Elizabeth Bell will graduate as her class Valedictorian this spring. She represents IHSA Board of Directors Division No. 7 and her principal is James Woodward.                   

4. BRANDON BERRY, OLNEY (EAST RICHLAND)  Brandon Berry has yet to set foot inside a university classroom or listen to a lecture from a collegiate professor, but the senior from East Richland High School feels like he has already earned a secondary education. “This secondary education has not come from books, worksheets or assignments,” wrote Brandon in his application essay. “I have obtained this education through athletics, where I have been able to hone my interpersonal and intrapersonal skills.”  Brandon went on to credit his participation in athletics for helping develop his communication and leadership skills, but perhaps most importantly, they made him realize that he finds much more satisfaction in his team’s success than his own individual success. Not that there had been of lack of either.   Thus far in his high school basketball and baseball career, Brandon has been a part of four Regional championship teams and the 2008 Tiger basketball squad that reached the state finals and placed third in Class 2A. In addition, he has been named All‐State by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association and the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association.   Brandon’s involvement in his school and community does not start and end with sports, as the Illinois State Scholar is involved in a number of extracurricular activities. He is a member of several clubs, including the Spanish Club, History Club and Interact Club, while also serving as a mentor for Big Brothers/Big Sisters. A High Honor Roll honoree in each semester of his high school career, he competes on his school’s WYSE Team (Worldwide Youth in Science & Engineering) in Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology.      Brandon’s Honors Calculus teacher at East Richland, Lisa Pampe, saw his selfless attitude on display in the classroom as well. “Brandon is a young man of exceptional ability who strives for academic and personal excellence. He has a very inquiring mind, finishing answers by asking questions and self‐study. He is able to complete assignments quickly and then aids other students when they seek his assistance.”  Brandon Berry has compiled a 5.2 grade point (5.0 scale), owns a Top 5 class ranking and will likely graduate as his class Valedictorian this spring. He represents IHSA Board of Directors Division No. 7 and his principal is Chris Simpson.                

5. EDWARD BRUCE, FENWICK  Edward Bruce considers himself to be the consummate teammate. He has played a multitude of team sports since he was young and prides himself on his ability to work well with others on the Fenwick High School basketball team, Math Team or simply when working on a group project in any of his classes.    Where Edwards really shines though, is under the individual spotlight, whether it be writing a paper, studying for a test or playing on the Friar golf and tennis teams.  “My capability to work with others has always been something that has served me well,” wrote Edward in his application essay. “I am also able to thrive in situations where I must work alone. I pride myself on being self driven and the ability to push myself has served me well in my individual activities.”  Edward’s individual efforts on the golf course resulted in team success, as the Friars won two Regionals and a Sectional title during his career, in addition to a sixth‐place Sectional finish in singles tennis as a junior and the opportunity to qualify for the tennis state finals this spring.   The National Honor Society selection and National Merit Finalist has also compiled a multitude of awards on the Math Team, including fifth‐place in the 2008 Chicago Archdiocese Individual Math Competition and a pair of Top 6 finishes at the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics state competition. Continuing the theme of Edward’s intertwined success, the Friars took the next step in 2010, winning the Archdiocese team title, while Edward placed sixth individually.  Fenwick Guidance Counselor and assistant basketball coach Dennis Zelasko doesn’t need Edward’s team or individual accomplishments listed  to know that he and the Fenwick community are impressed by all of his accolades. “I consider Edward to be the epitome of what it means to be a student‐athlete. He is among the best and brightest students at Fenwick and is truly an amazing young man. You can always count on him to bring an exceptional effort to whatever he does, whether it’s in the classroom or in athletics.”  A two‐year National Honor Society member with a 4.6 grade point average (4.0 scale), Edward Bruce represents IHSA Board of Directors Division No. 3 and his principal is Richard Borsch.                 

6. JOSHUA BURNS, NORMAL COMMUNITY  There is no other student quite like Joshua Burns at Normal Community High School. Literally.   Of the 1,800 students roaming the school’s hallways, Josh is the only student‐athlete in the school this year participating in the combination of cross country, wrestling and tennis. His four‐year career on each team left him with roughly four free weeks per school year, but more importantly they have been vital in developing various positive attributes to his personality.   Cross country taught him about his own drive and desire, as he joined the team as a freshman despite having never run a mile before entering high school. Wrestling helped instill self‐confidence, as the self‐described “wimp” grew into the captain of the team by his senior season. Tennis displayed his selflessness and team‐first attitude, as his biggest rival, who also happens to be his younger brother, will likely supplant him as the squad’s No. 1 singles player this season.   “These sports have all changed me for the better,” wrote Joshua in his application letter. “I have made lasting friendships, developed confidence and learned that there are more important things in life than winning. Because of these experiences, I know I can overcome what challenges lay ahead.”  Josh doesn’t appear to shy away from any challenges, as he maintains academic success and other extracurricular involvement despite his time commitment to his school sports team. A Spanish Honor Society member who has earned a Superior Rating for his piano playing, Josh is also a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and a sportsmanship award winner. He finished in the Top 64 in the state in tennis a year ago and placed fourth in his wrestling Regional.  Normal Community Spanish teacher Julie Howell sees the attributes that make Josh unique among his peers. “Hidden behind his outgoing and good‐humored personality is a student whose scholastic achievements are outstanding. He is an enthusiastic, intelligent and driven young man who has risen to the academic challenges he set for himself.”      A two‐year member of the National Honor Society with a 5.1 grade point average (5.0 scale) and a Top 5 class ranking, Joshua Burns represents IHSA Board of Directors Division No. 5 and his principal is Dr. Jeanette Nuckolls.                

7. SHANE CONVERY, LINCOLNWOOD  In October of this school year, Shane Convery put it all together at Prairie Vista Golf Course in Bloomington. Despite blustery weather and occasional precipitation, he persevered and shot rounds of 71 and 73 at the 2009 IHSA Class 1A Boys State Finals. Shortly after sinking his fourth shot to save par on the 18th hole on day two of the competition, Shane realized a lifelong dream by winning the state’s individual state championship.  He acknowledges that the accomplishment was life‐altering, as it aided in his recruitment to play golf next year Florida Southern College, but was also determined not to let it change him as a person.  “The state championship came with much praise,” wrote Shane in his application essay. “It could have been easy for me to boast my accomplishment and forget about the people who helped get me there. I tried to take all of the congratulations, cards and newspaper articles with great modesty and set a good example for those who admired me, especially kids.”  In addition to golf, Shane also participated in basketball, Student Council, Tech Club, Spanish Club, Yearbook and Key Club during his time at Lincolnwood High School. He took on leadership roles within these groups as well, serving as the Tech Club President, Student Council Vice‐President and assistant editor of the yearbook.  Shane closed his golf career as a four‐time state final qualifier with three Top 3 finishes, while away from the course the Illinois State Scholar was honored for Outstanding Achievement in English, achieved High Honors in all four years at Lincolnwood and was the recipient of a Chemistry award.   Lincolnwood English Teacher Linda Brown has been just as impressed with Shane’s work in class, as others have with his work on the greens. “I have witnessed his positive, undefeated attitude continue to drive him to some of the most unique writing I have seen from any student in my 31 years of English instruction. Shane never settles for less than his best.”  A two‐year National Honor Society member with a 5.2 grade point average (5.0 scale), Shane Convery will graduate as the Valedictorian of his senior class. He represents Board of Directors Division No. 6 and his principal is Richard Mazzolini.                 

8. KELLY CURRAN, BLOOMINGTON CENTRAL CATHOLIC  Few student‐athletes in the state of Illinois know as much about individual or team success at the high school level as Kelly Curran. Kelly won the past two individual Class 1A Girls Cross Country state titles, was the 3200‐Meter Run winner at the 2008 IHSA Track & Field State Finals and was a starter on the Saints basketball team that claimed the Class 2A state championship this past February. Kelly will also have the opportunity to add to her individual and team trophy case this spring, as she tries to help the Bloomington Central Catholic girls track & field team defend its Class 1A state crown.  It is the story of the Saints track & field title last spring that best defines Kelly as a person, as she put the team above herself in a sport defined by individual accomplishment. Convinced her team could contend for the title, Kelly decided to participate in the maximum allowable four events at the state meet and urged two other teammates to do the same, knowing the decision could potentially cost each of them the chance at individual state titles in their best events. Both followed suit and while none of the three finished in first‐place individually, the school captured its first‐ever state championship in track & field.   “We were ecstatic that there were twenty first‐place medals for us as opposed to only two or three.” wrote Kelly in her application essay. “It honored all the girls who put in the same amount of time and effort, but do not always receive the same honors or results.”  Kelly’s involvement doesn’t end with athletics, as she participates in the Interact Club, Math Team, Vita Christi, Mu Alpha Theta, WYSE Team (Worldwide Youth in Science & Engineering) and Student Government at Central Catholic. The National Society of High School Scholars honoree and Advanced Placement Scholar traveled to New York City in December after being named a national finalist for the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award.  Fr. Patrick Henehan sees Kelly’s leadership skills on display every day as the Chaplain at Central Catholic. “Kelly is humble and unassuming. She often tries to help others and promotes good choices among students. She is a model of respect for others.”  A two‐year member of the National Honor Society with a 4.1 grade point average (4.0 scale), Kelly Curran will graduate as her class Valedictorian this spring. She represents IHSA Board of Directors Division No. 5 and her principal is Joy Allen.                 

9. BRIAN ELLIOT, MACOMB    Brian Elliot walked onto the field for his first day of high school football practice ready to emulate his favorite player of all‐time, the late Chicago Bear great Walter Payton, and begin the initial steps on the path toward his own professional football glory. The practice opened with a one‐on‐one tackling drill, but instead of Brian seeing his star begin to rise, he saw only stars.   Looking back on his career now, Brian realizes that initial hit and every one since was well worth it, despite the fact that he won’t sign an NFL contract as a player any time soon.  “My days of playing football are over now, but the lesson still remains the same,” wrote Brian in his application essay. “If you love something, you have to go after it. Sports have shown me how to achieve these dreams: hard work, dedication and most importantly perseverance. I will never be an NFL running back, but I have other dreams to chase.”  Despite the results of that first day of practice, Brian went on to excel on the gridiron, as well as on the wrestling mat, where he would help the Bomber wrestling team to Regional and Sectional titles and go on to place third in the state individually as a junior. He also took on a leadership role in the high school, where he became the President of his class, won the Chemistry Achievement Award and was honored as an Illinois Boys State Governor and Boys Nation Senator.   The Illinois State Scholar received a Presidential Nomination to the United States Military Academy and will begin his studies at West Point next fall.  Macomb English teacher Rooney Dively has had the opportunity to witness firsthand the skills that have made Brian a standout student and athlete in high school and a promising leader in the future. “When Brian is involved in an activity, he shows a good work ethic and never shirks from responsibility. He encourages others to become involved and to do their best. He will continue to be an active, positive community leader.”  A two‐year member of the National Honor Society with a 3.9 grade point average (4.0 scale) and a Top 10 class ranking, Brian Elliot represents IHSA Board of Directors Division No. 6 and his principal is John N. Rumley.                 

10. ELIZBETH FABER, ST. IGNATIUS  When Elizabeth Faber entered high school she thought of herself as “a tiny girl who could run fast,” but when she joined the cross country team as a freshman it ignited a lifelong passion for the sport.   “Cross Country has taught me the importance of teamwork, the significance of leadership and most importantly the thrill of being truly dedicated to something,” wrote Elizabeth in her application essay. “The strong team bond, the dedicated coaches and the challenges the sport presented were what kept me excited and engaged. Moreover, cross country has allowed me to apply these life lessons to all that I approach with confidence and optimism.”  Elizabeth’s stature and swiftness served in her well in the sport, as she completed her career on the Wolfpack cross country team having qualified twice for the IHSA cross country state finals, including helping her team to an 18th place finish in the state in 2008.   In addition to cross country, Elizabeth also participates in track & field, a school mentoring program, serves on the executive board of the St. Ignatius Health Coalition and has been a school retreat leader during the past four years. The four‐time Girls Catholic Athletic Conference Academic All‐Conference selection also has also given back to her community over the past four years by volunteering at the P.A.D.S. Homeless Shelter.  St. Ignatius Dean of Students and track & field head coach Erin Luby has witnessed Elizabeth’s passion and leadership firsthand. “Not only is Elizabeth a determined and dedicated student and athlete, but she is one of the best leaders I have worked with in my coaching career. As a cross country captain, she constantly encouraged those around her to give their best efforts, but was not afraid to confront her teammates if they are not working hard or are detracting from the team.”  Elizabeth Faber is a two‐year member of the National Honor Society who has compiled a 3.9 grade point average (4.0 scale). She represents IHSA Board of Directors Division No. 1 and her principal is Dr. Catherine Karl.                   

11. MITCHELL FAULK, ROCKFORD BOYLAN  Rockford Boylan senior Mitchell Faulk is already a published poet, so the dancing prose with which he describes the impact swimming has had on his life should come as no surprise.    “Then, in my future, I reflect upon my journey, define myself, and search for the root of such a journey, the one inciting factor that made me who I am. (My search will take me to) the wide base of the tower of my life, where there is but one thing of crisp austerity: a swimming pool.”   Mitchell’s words from his application essay correctly foreshadow an accomplished career on the Titan swimming team, one that included 10 Top 6 Sectional finishes and one school‐record, but fail to show the impact he has made out of the water at his high school.  In addition to swimming, Mitchell is a part of the Rockford Boylan tennis team and also participates in the Spanish Club, Natural Helpers, Key Club and Math Team. He has achieved four Top 3 finishes for the latter, including first‐place in Individual Geometry, Two‐Person Geometry and Team Geometry.   A National Merit Finalist and AP Scholar, Mitchell was the Gold Medal winner on the National Spanish Exam and has reached High Honors every year at Rockford Boylan. He has also achieved recognition from the National Language Art League and has been awarded Excellence accolades in Critical Thinking, European History and U.S. History.   Rockford Boylan Director of Guidance makes it clear that the impact the pool has had on Mitchell rivals the impact Mitchell has made on the school. “Mitchell is perhaps the most capable student I have encountered in my 25 years in secondary education. I regularly work with talented students who matriculate to colleges across the nation. Few, if any, can compete with Mitchell’s incredible focus and determination in accomplishing his academic and personal goals.”  The Valedictorian of his senior class, Mitchell Faulk has earned a 5.1 grade point average (4.0 scale). The two‐year member of the National Honor Society represents IHSA Board of Directors Division No. 4 and his principal is Fr. Paul Lipinski.                  

12. KAITLYN FRASER, OAK FOREST  Kaitlyn Fraser has a laundry list of things that she has learned from her time participating in basketball, cross country, soccer, Scholastic Bowl and Math Team at Oak Forest High School. That list includes time management, communication, dealing with adversity, setting goals, leadership and taking risks to name a few. But most importantly, she says that they have taught her who she is.  “My involvement with activities and sports has allowed me to be a happier, more productive student,” wrote Kaitlyn in her application essay. “I will be making crucial decisions throughout my life and am convinced that the skills I have gained while participating in sports and activities will guide my choices.”    Kaitlyn will also be able to pull life lessons from a number of clubs and organizations she has been involved with during high school, including Student Council, Science Club, Rotary Club, Freshman Mentoring and the Academic Talented Program. The Illinois State Scholar and Wendy’s High School Heisman candidate has also received recognition from the National Society of High School Scholars.   An active participant in the communities annual Relay for Life cancer awareness fundraiser, Kaitlyn actively volunteers her time within her school and community. She has served as an aid in an Algebra One class and helps organize community events as a member of the Interact Club.  Participation in activities has helped Kaitlyn figure out who she is as a person and the result is a student‐athlete that the entire Oak Forest faculty is proud of according to Mathematics Teacher Matthew Manzke. “I have watched Kaitlyn develop into a quality athlete, student and leader who is excellent role model for the Oak Forest High School community. The amount of time she spends working for others is a testament to her unselfish personality. She is always wiling to go that extra mile in order to experience success.”     A two‐year member of the National Honor Society with a 5.8 grade point average (5.0 scale), Kaitlyn Fraser will graduate with a Top 10 ranking in her senior class this spring. She represents IHSA Board of Directors Division No. 3 and her principal is Dr. David Wilson.                    

13. REBECCA GILLEN, MONMOUTH‐ROSEVILLE  Rebecca Gillen was told at a young age that “life is one percent what happens to you and 99 percent how you react to those situations.”   Her reaction in the classroom, the athletic realm and the community throughout high school has been to excel above and beyond her peers, something she credits to hard work and determination.   “Many times in one’s life there are going to situations where the odds do not fall on your side,” wrote Rebecca in her application essay. “If you work hard to overcome that adversity or can make the best of a bad situation, regardless of the outcome, you will be the definition of a successful person.”  Rebecca’s many successes include advancing to the WYSE (Worldwide Youth in Science & Engineering) Sectionals in both math and physics. The Illinois State Scholar has been an Academic All‐Conference pick in several sports and currently serves as the Treasurer on her school’s Student Council. She has also been involved in Spanish Club, Biology Bowl, Science Olympiad, the school newspaper, Math Club, the school yearbook and the Spirit Club at Monmouth‐Roseville.  Rebecca has been the recipient of a bevy of All‐Conference, All‐Area and Player of the Year accolades in volleyball, basketball and track & field throughout her career. She earned All‐State honors after helping the Titan 4x400‐Meter Relay team place seventh in the state at the 2009 IHSA Class 1A Track & Field State Finals and has four Top 5 Sectional finishes in three events during her first three years of high school track & field.   Monmouth‐Roseville English teacher and track & field coach Brian Tibbets has seen Rebecca excel inside and outside of the classroom. “It is rare to find an individual who excels so completely at both academics and sports, but I feel Rebecca has set new standards for current and future student‐athletes at Monmouth‐Roseville High School.”  Rebecca’s reactions to the situations in the other 99 percent of her life have now led her to a unique one percent of her own, as she will graduate this spring as the Valedictorian of her senior class.  A two‐year National Honor Society member with a 4.1 grade point average (4.0 scale), Rebecca Gillen represents IHSA Board of Directors Division No. 6 and her principal is Jeff Bryan.               

14. JORDAN HAUCK, JOHNSBURG  Whether it has been participating on the Johnsburg High School volleyball, softball, cheerleading or math teams over the past four years, Jordan Hauck knows one thing for certain. To attain success, one cannot just “be a part of a team or club.”  No, to truly attain success an individual needs to invest themselves in whatever they do and buy into their teammates and the concept of team.    “This is the basic idea that I will take away from my time in sports and activities, but will also apply to life in the future,” wrote Jordan in her application essay. “One person cannot pass, set and hit a ball over the net to score all the points by themselves, just as one person cannot manage, run and market a business alone. Sports and activities have given me the life skills that have helped develop the characteristics that I know will be beneficial to me as a person, student and employee.”  In addition to sports, Jordan helped hone her leadership skills by also serving as a Chairperson on the Student Council and participating on her school’s WYSE Team (Worldwide Youth in Science & Engineering). She also helped the Skyhawks volleyball and softball teams win two Regional championships apiece and will vie for a third in softball this spring while serving as a team captain. Outside of school, she participates in travel softball and volleyball, was a runner‐up for the HOBY Award, is a two‐time All‐American cheerleader and represented Johnsburg at the Fox Valley Leadership Conference.   Johnsburg Math Teacher and Math Team coach Brad Fey has seen Jordan’s commitment to team and her teammates, as well as her studies, firsthand over the past four years. “Jordan has impressed me with her commitment to learning, her commitment to improving herself and her commitment to making her classmates better students and learners. She is a natural leader and a positive role model to her teammates and classmates.”  A two‐year National Honor Society member with a 4.4 grade point average (4.0 scale), Jordan Hauck ranks in the Top 5 percent of her senior class. She represents Board of Directors Division No. 2 and her principal is Kevin Shelton.                  

15. ANNE HIGGINS, MT. ZION  No negative thoughts.  That was the mantra that Anne Higgins repeated to herself a countless number of times as she pushed through each cross country practice and race.   Anne made it easy to see why negative thoughts could potentially seep in at times during this grueling sport, but also the ultimate payoff for her personally, when she described cross country’s impact on her with the following prose from her application essay.  “It is just when the legs are exhausted to nothingness, when the lungs feel ready to collapse from lack of oxygen and when the body is urging to simply give up, that good character must dominate.”  Whether the rigors of cross country developed Anne’s character or revealed it, she has managed to “dominate” inside and outside of the classroom during her time at Mt. Zion. She started by giving herself a variety options, as she participated in cross country, track & field, basketball, Scholastic Bowl, Marching Band, Student Council, Spanish Club, WYSE Team (Worldwide Youth in Science & Engineering), SADD, Book Club and Physics Club during the course of the past four years.   Her inspired involvement in extracurriculars has led to a multitude of awards, as the Illinois State Scholar won the Rensselear Medalist, was a state finalist for the Wendy’s High School Heisman and was named a National Merit Commended Student. She also won a pair of Regional WYSE first‐place awards and notched a third‐place WYSE Sectional finish in English. In addition, she helped the Lady Braves to a pair of Regional cross country crowns and qualified individually for the IHSA Girls Track & Field State Finals in the 300‐Meter Low Hurdles in 2007.  Mt. Zion Guidance Counselor Cathy Shelton is one of the many school faculty members who have witnessed Anne’s dominance firsthand. “Goal‐oriented, personable, hard working, conscientious, dependable, ethical and humble are the words that aptly describe Anne Higgins. I have watched her grow into a mature young woman with a very bright future.”  A three‐year National Honor Society member with a 4.4 grade point average (4.0 scale), Anne Higgins will graduate as the Valedictorian of her senior class. She represents Board Division No. 5 and her principal is Greg Bradley.              

16. SEAN HOGAN, VERNON HILLS   “Life always has uncomfortable, new situations, but as long as we are willing to try and experience these new situations, the end result will be our own personal growth.”  The words from Sean Hogan’s application essay relate well to everyday life, but are typified by the students who enter high schools across the country for the first time each fall.      Sean had felt that lack of comfort as an underclassmen on his school’s WYSE Team (Worldwide Youth in Science & Engineering) and decided to take a leadership and mentoring role to his younger teammates in his numerous involvements at Vernon Hills, which included bowling, tennis, music, jazz orchestra, JETS, DECA, Robotics, WYSE and Math Team. His efforts not only gave him the satisfaction of helping others fit in, but he also saw the value in the improvement of each team, especially WYSE. “Making an effort to get to know each other made the team more comfortable and reduced the stress when we competed," he wrote.  One place where Sean never seems to be uncomfortable is in the classroom, as he helped the Cougars WYSE team to a trio of Top 3 finishes in chemistry and math during his career and also placed second individually in the Algebra II competition. He has also earned honors from the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics, AIME and DECA, while helping the Vernon Hills bowling team reach the IHSA Boys Bowling State Finals four times, placing 14th or better on each trip.   Whether helping younger teammates find their place, hitting the books or hitting the lanes, Vernon Hills Counselor and bowling coach Ronald Long says Sean approaches all his endeavors with an unbridled passion. “Spend 10 minutes with Sean and you feel like you are moving in reverse. His desire to be productive every single minute of every day sets him apart from other, equally qualified students. He is one of the most brilliant students I have encountered in 32 years of education.”  Sean Hogan has achieved a 4.6 grade point average (4.0 scale) and will graduate as the Valedictorian of his senior class. He represents IHSA Board of Directors Division No. 2 and his principal is Dr. Ellen Cwick.                   

17. KATHERINE KLEINMAIER, DIXON  Katherine Kleinmaier has had the opportunity for a countless number of positive experiences and achievements throughout her high school career. Katherine participated in volleyball, soccer and bowling for the Duchesses and was also a part of a number of groups at Dixon High School including the Key Club, band, Student Council and theater crew.   Thus, it may come as a surprise that when she talks about her greatest achievement during high school, she doesn’t bring up her all‐conference honors in all three sports, placing 12th or better as a team at bowling Sectionals in each of her four seasons, attending the Presidential Inauguration Youth Conference in Washington, D.C., being named a National Merit Commended Student or even being the recipient of The President’s Volunteer Service Award. Nor does she reference being selected to attend the Kiwanis Hugh O’Brian Leadership Seminar or receiving National Honor Student Recognition from the United State Achievement Academy.   No, Katherine’s greatest achievement was organizing an event where others got to enjoy themselves, namely the Key Club Fun Fair. Katherine helped organize the event from the ground up in every aspect, taking an active role in securing approval for the venue, inviting families from the community, putting together games, scheduling workers, finding prizes and making food.   “The first year was especially difficult because I didn’t have any experience,” wrote Katherine in her application essay. “Planning the event strengthened my skills in organization and communication, but besides this, I truly enjoyed the event. I love working with kids and families and seeing everyone have fun was a great reward.”  Dixon English Teacher Kelly Gingras says that the selfless side Katherine displayed in facilitating the Fun Fair is one that those in the high school and community see every day. “With her warm and caring personality, Katie makes connections with the people around her and projects compassion and concern in all of her interactions. Through her academic accomplishments, commitment to service and continual quest for knowledge and excellence, Katherine Kleinmaier exemplifies the qualities associated with the finest scholars and leaders.”    A two‐year National Honor Society member with a 4.4 grade point average (4.0 scale) and the Valedictorian of her class, Katherine Kleinmaier represents IHSA Board of Directors Division No. 4 and his principal is Dr. Michael Grady.              

18. AARON LAURSEN, CHARLESTON  Aaron Laursen dove into high school and all it had to offer with both feet. When those feet weren’t kicking the soccer ball on the freshman team, his schedule quickly filled up with Science Club, Spanish Club and schoolwork. He admitted in his application essay that he was worried “he wouldn’t make it out alive” and considered dropping everything to focus on his classes.  That was when a “miracle” occurred…a day off.   “That day, I realized that I didn’t need to quit in order to have a life; these things were my life,” wrote Aaron. “Everything I did taught me something and made me into who I am. Sports didn’t just teach me how to play a game, they taught me how to live life.”  Activities are Aaron’s life and he is determined to do as much living as possible, as he added wrestling, track & field, scholastic bowl, Spanish National Honors Society, the school newspaper and WYSE Team (Worldwide Youth in Science & Engineering) to his load over the next four years.   Aaron not only participated, but achieved, as the Illinois State Scholar has received a bevy of awards and honors in both athletics and academics. Just a few of Aaron’s honors include being named to the Chicago Fire’s All‐State Academic Team, winning the Charleston High School Scholar Athlete Award, a fifth‐place WYSE finish in Comparative Sciences, 13 total letters in four activities and All‐Conference accolades in Scholastic Bowl.      The students and faculty at Charleston have all taken note of Aaron’s vigor according to Physical Education Teacher and soccer coach Paul Stranz. “Aaron is highly respected by his peers. He has also earned the respect of the faculty and administration through his high academic achievement, work ethic and his involvement in school activities. He has been able to seamlessly manage his time and effort between academics, athletics and extracurricular activities.”     A two‐year National Honor Society member with a 5.4 grade point average (5.0 scale) and the Valedictorian of his senior class, Aaron Laursen represents IHSA Board of Directors Division No. 5 and his principal is Diane Hutchins.                 

19. ANDREW MARTIN, ST. THERESA  Andrew Martin has been told that high school will be the best four years of his life. He doesn’t disagree, but adds the caveat that they are the best years of his life so far.   “One of the most important things I have learned in high school is that a life of service generates a life of happiness,” wrote Andrew in his application essay. “I will take with me and use what I have learned outside of class just as much as what I have learned in class during the past four years.”  The things Andrew has learned outside of class could have come have a variety of places, as he has participated in cross country, track & field, Scholastic Bowl, Student Council, WYSE Team (Worldwide Youth in Science & Engineering), Chess Club, Drama Club and the Foreign Language Club during his four years at St. Theresa High School.   The Illinois State Scholar is a National Merit Commended Student who was a semifinalist for the 2010 Coca Cola Scholar Award and was also a candidate to be named to the Commission on Presidential Scholars. He has also earned numerous awards in WYSE and Scholastic Bowl, including a first‐place WYSE state finish in Chemistry.  St. Theresa Social Studies Department Chair Todd Vohland has seen the impact Andrew has made on others at St. Theresa, as well as young people in the Decatur community. “His combination of leadership, work ethic and character helps set him apart from the crowd as a very special young man. He is comfortable being a role model for younger students.”  There is no better example of Andrew’s comfort level as a leader for young people than with his active role within the Boy Scouts of America. The Eagle Scout has held a multitude of positions within the organization, including Troop Guide, Senior Patrol Leader, Vice Chief of Activities and Venturing Crew President.   The Valedictorian of his senior class, Andrew Martin has earned a 4.0 grade point average (4.0 scale) and a perfect ACT score of 36. The two‐year member of the National Honor Society represents IHSA Board of Directors Division No. 5 and his principal is Dr. Kenneth C. Hendriksen.                 

20. ELIZABETH MCKAY, DOWNERS GROVE NORTH    As a standout on the Downers Grove North speech team, Elizabeth McKay had the best of both worlds. As a competitor she was already a three‐time tournament champion by her junior year and was medaling in nearly every competition. As a teammate she had taken on a leadership role, as her teammates gravitated to her for advice, feedback and guidance. The more she did of the latter, the more she watched her teammates success grow, while some even began to surpass her.   As a leader, Elizabeth began to waiver.   “I realized that I was standing face to face with the most difficult obstacle a leader can meet: insecurity,” wrote Elizabeth in application essay. “So I picked my pompoms off the ground and resumed my post as team cheerleader. I coached, supported and encouraged with abandon, knowing the success of my teammates was not debasing my accomplishments, instead it was strengthening me as a leader.”  Elizabeth’s leadership was also on display on the cross country team, track & field team, Principals Advisory Council, Class Board and Government Club during the past four years. Her myriad accomplishments include being named a National Merit Finalist, a Bausch & Laumb Science Award winner, an AP Scholar with Distinction and a Gold and Silver Key Math award recipient. She is also a member of the French Honor Society and finished 12th or better nationally on two different occasions in the Le Grand Concours French Competition.  Just as Elizabeth inspired her speech teammates, teachers like Downers Grove North English Department Chair Linda Kraemer Augustyn have found inspiration in her. “When I think of Elizabeth, I am reminded of Ralph Waldo Emerson’s speech The American Scholar. He suggests that American intellectuals must possess an understanding of nature and its interconnections, a belief in books as a catalyst for original thinking and a desire to act ethically and purposefully. Elizabeth McKay possesses all three.”  A two‐year member of the National Honor Society with a 4.7 grade point average (4.0 scale), Elizabeth McKay will graduate as the Valedictorian of her senior class this spring. She represents IHSA Board of Directors Division No. 3 and her principal is Maria Ward.                  

21. ERIN POSS, ANTIOCH  “It’s all about mental toughness.”   That was the mantra that Erin Poss’ mom reminded her before every cross country meet during her sophomore season. Erin believed she was ready physically for every race: running an extra mile after practice, eating healthy and taking precautionary measures to protect against injury. Yet, she still found herself unable to overcome certain runners or to close on opponents in the final legs of a race.   Finally grasping her mother’s advice as the season wore on, Erin was ready to give the mental aspect of running the same preparation that she gave the physical side. The result was an 18th place finish in the state as a sophomore, achieving her goal of a Top 25 time.  “I did not realize how crucial the mental aspect was until the final race of the season,” wrote Erin in her application essay. “Looking back, I realize the important achievement wasn’t my finish at the state meet, but realizing my mom’s message and being able to utilize it to fulfill my potential. It is a lesson that carries over into other areas of my life.”  Erin has made two return trips to state in cross country since, earning All‐State honors in 2008 and 2009 with seventh and sixth‐place finishes, respectively. In addition, she has a pair of All‐State finishes from the 2009 IHSA Girls Track & Field State Finals in the 1600‐Meter Run and 3200‐Meter Run.  Mental barriers have either not appeared or been rendered ineffective by Erin in the classroom, as the Illinois State Scholar was a Wendy’s High School Heisman state finalist and was the top scorer on the American Mathematics Competition (AMC) test. She also participates in the Fellowship for Christian Athletes, Seminar for Scholars and the Athlete Leadership Council at her high school.  Antioch High School Mathematics Teacher Hanna Drye has seen the physical and mental attributes that have made her successful as a runner on display in the classroom. “Erin has an extremely strong work ethic and does whatever it takes to accomplish the goals she sets for herself. She has the ability to grasp difficult concepts and synthesize complex information.”   Erin Poss is a two‐year member of the National Honor Society with a 4.5 grade point average (4.0 scale) and a Top 10 ranking in her class. She represents IHSA Board of Directors Division No. 2 and her principal is Mike Nekritz.              

22. STEPHAN RAUH, METAMORA  Reflecting on the past four years of his life as a high school student, Stephan Rauh calls Metamora High School a “wonderfully enriching place of growth.”   Stephan’s personal growth was aided by his involvement in a number of extracurricular activities, including cross country, tennis, intramurals, Campus Life, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the German Club.   “During my last semester of high school I am making an effort to be especially thankful for the time that I have been able to spend both in the classroom and on the practice field/court/course.” wrote Stephan in his application essay. “The knowledge that I have gained through my classes has been incredible, but the memories I have made through sports are especially dear to me.”  Those memories include a tremendous amount of success in both the team and individual realms in cross country and tennis. Stephan helped the Redbird cross country team to a pair of Top 10 state finishes in his career and earned All‐State distinction in two of his three state final trips. He has also led his tennis squad to three tennis Sectional crowns thus far and earned All‐State accolades in doubles play a year ago. His academic achievements measure up to his athletic success, as the Illinois State Scholar and SAR Award Winner will graduate as his class Valedictorian this spring.  Stephan has made a significant impact on Metamora High School and his German Teacher Peter Bachfischer. “In my 37 years at Metamora High School there has never been a student who better combined outstanding qualities in academics and athletics than Stephan. I have come to know him as an extremely likeable, gifted and meticulous person. He is quiet and modest and does what needs to be done.”   A two‐year National Honor Society member with a 4.6 grade point average (4.0 scale) and the Valedictorian of his class, Stephan Ruah represents IHSA Board of Directors Division No. 4 and his principal is Randall Toepke.                   

23. KIMBERLY SABLE, NEW TRIER  Of all the life lessons participating in softball, tennis and gymnastics have offered Kimberly Sable during her high school career, two of the most important came during her freshman softball season. Both centered around the importance of team, but in two very different ways.  Kimberly capped a successful freshman season on the diamond by being called up to the varsity squad, where she would see significant action on a team ranked among the best in the state. The euphoria that should surround such a promotion was tempered by the fact that she was asked to switch to hitting lefty and serve as a slap hitter, something she had not done previously and wasn’t entirely comfortable with. Regardless, she made the move for the betterment of the team and helped the Trevians place fourth in the state.   The second event proved to be much more serious and helped put into perspective how trivial wins and losses are in the grand scheme, as a teammate’s family member was stricken with Multiple Sclerosis. The team rallied around her and took up a cause, putting on a highly successful softball clinic to raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society.  “These are two striking examples of how a group can accomplish goals that would be unattainable individually,” wrote Kimberly in her application essay. “Alone we had little to offer, but as a team we reached and exceeded our goals.”  In addition to athletics, Kimberly is highly involved in her school and community, participating in the Kinetic Wellness leadership program, Costa Rica Club, Student Athlete Leadership Training, Student Senate and Biology Club at New Trier. Her volunteer efforts include the Spanish tutoring program Casa Central, Haven Youth & Community Services, Operation Teen Safe Driving and Special Olympic coaching.  Named a Scholar by the state of Illinois and the National Society of High Schools, Kimberly was the recipient of the Comcast Leaders & Achievers Scholarship and has also been honored with the Board of Education Recognition Award for Outstanding Achievement, The Congressional Silver Certificate Award and Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica.  Kimberly’s ability to balance so many activities inside and outside of school has earned her the respect of New Trier faculty members like Guidance Counselor Jill Cervantes. “Kimberly squeezes every minute out of every day. Academically speaking, she is a gem and her contributions outside of the classroom have been phenomenal.”  The owner of a 4.7 grade point average (4.0), Kimberly Sable represents Board of Directors Division No. 2 and her principal is Dr. Tim Dohrer.          

24.  JASJAAP SIDHU, CARBONDALE  Step One: Wake up, get dressed and go to school. Step Two: Go to class, eat lunch. Step Three: Go back to class. Step Four: Go home and do homework. Step Five: Repeat.  The five steps above were chronicled by Jasjaap Sidhu in his application essay, in what he refers to as “The Machine,” a timeless trap that too many students across the country fall into during their high school years.   Jasjaap admits that he seemed destined for “The Machine” or worse after grade school, but saw high school as a chance to take advantage of all the opportunities in front of him.  “In middle school I was anything but a stereotypical good student,” wrote Jasjaap. “I was insubordinate, got in fights and although I got good grades, my character did not match my academic record.”   After entering high school, Jasjaap channeled his energy into tennis, speech and scholastic bowl, experiencing the same types of success as he had previously seen in the classroom. Between the three activities, he was a part of three Regional champion teams and three Sectional champion teams, while he also earned several individual accolades, highlighted by a pair of Top 10 individual finishes in the IHSA Speech State Finals.   Jasjaap also immersed himself in Student Senate, Spanish Club, the Freshman Mentor program, Future Business Leaders of America, Theater & Drama and the Student Advisory Board. All of his commitments weren’t a detriment to his grades, as he earned Illinois State Scholar Honors, was a WYSE (Worldwide Youth in Science & Engineering) Sectional Runner‐Up, earned second place at the Future Business Leaders of American (FBLA) Regionals and was Best In Show at the History Fair Regionals.       With perfect grades and involvement in over 10 activities and clubs, Jasjaap has not only avoided “The Machine,” he has become one himself.  Carbondale Student Activities Director Connie Morgan agrees. “I have been a part of student activities for over 20 years. Jasjaap is one of the most incredible student leaders I have had the opportunity to work with and is by far the best of the best.”  A National Honor Society member with a 4.3 grade point average (4.0 scale), Jasjaap Sidhu will graduate as the Valedictorian of his senior class. He represents Board Division No. 7 and his principal is Steve Murphy.         

25. JACK TUREK, ST. IGNATIUS  Of all the lessons that Jack Turek learned during his high school water polo and swimming & diving career, the most important did not occur in the water, but rather on the bus. It was on the bus ride to the 2009 IHSA Water Polo State Finals when Jack’s coach approached him to let him know that a younger teammate would be taking his starting spot that evening.   Jack admits that he knew nothing of the game of water polo when he entered high school, but decided to play after his swimming teammates convinced him. He wasn’t an overnight star, but worked hard and eventually earned a starting spot on the varsity squad, helping the team reach the state tournament as his love for the sport grew.   The decision sent his emotions “raging,” but Jack chose to put the team ahead of himself and in retrospect realized one of the great lessons of participation.    “I had worked so hard all year to earn my starting position on the team,” wrote Jack in his application essay. “Still, I had to realize that my teammate had also worked just as hard as me and was actually the better player. I had to put my own desires aside and think about what was best for the team.”   Few students have been better than Jack in the St. Ignatius community, as the National Spanish Exam Gold Medalist and Spanish Honor Society member has been a member of the school’s Retreat Leadership program and was selected to travel to Guatemala on a two‐week cultural exchange program. He also has multitude of honors from the pool, as he has combined to be a part of five Sectional champion teams thus far in his career between swimming & diving and water polo. In addition, he owns a Sectional title in the 100‐Yard Breaststroke and two other Top 3 Sectional finishes.   St. Ignatius English teacher and water polo coach Brian Drumm has witnessed Jack’s selflessness and skill two‐fold. “Jack is a true leader both in the pool and in the halls of St. Ignatius. His work ethic, listening capability and willingness to focus are the main reasons he has consistently been able to reach difficult goals in both arenas.”   Jack Turek is a two‐year National Honor Society member with a 4.2 grade point average (4.0 scale). He represents IHSA Board of Directors Division No. 1 and his principal is Dr. Catherine Karl.                

26. TIMOTHY WEBER, HOMEWOOD‐FLOSSMOOR  The Illinois High School Association has built its sportsmanship program around one overriding message, theme and slogan: “Do What’s Right!”   Tim Weber found himself faced with the chance to Do What’s Right! on the biggest stage of his athletic career at the 2008 IHSA Boys Golf State Finals. He was already two strokes under par on the first day of the competition and approaching his ball on the green when he noticed that it read “Barrington High School.” A walk down the fairway confirmed his fear…he had hit the wrong ball. While Tim could have tried to circumvent the rules to keep his superb round intact, instead he took the mandated two‐stroke penalty en route to a triple‐bogey on the hole.   “This experience enforced something I already knew,” wrote Tim in his application essay. “The best option is always to follow the rules and be honest. I could have kept quiet and gotten away with it, but I would not have been happy with myself. In the grand scheme of things, a bad score means nothing.”  In addition to golf, Tim was a member of the Vikings tennis team, as he helped the two teams to four combined state final trips and a pair of Top 10 golf finishes. He also participated in Scholastic Bowl, DECA, Psychology Bowl, Student Ambassadors, Math Team and Mu Alpha Theta during the past four years. Tim has been honored for academic successes as well, as he is an Illinois State Scholar, an AP Scholar with Honor, a National Merit Scholarship Commended Student and a Board of Education Distinguished Scholar.   Homewood‐Flossmoor Science Teacher and golf coach Christopher Stiglic feels that Tim’s role on his squad wasn’t defined by his one action of sportsmanship at the state finals, but by a career of leadership. “I have seen Tim grow and mature into a well‐rounded individual. Like any first‐rate leader, Tim is clear in defining his expectations, and is able to motivate people to achieve them. Qualifying for three state finals is impressive, but his willingness to help others succeed is even more impressive.”  A National Honor Society member with a 5.9 grade point average (6.0 scale), Tim Weber will graduate as the Valedictorian of his senior class this spring. He represents IHSA Board of Directors Division No. 3 and his principal is Dr. Ryan Pitcock.                  

ALL‐STATE ACADEMIC  TEAM ‐ WHERE ARE THEY NOW   LUCAS BILLS Nitanic (N.‐Harristown) 1998‐99 All‐State Academic Team   THEN  (from 1999 program bio) One small fact says it all about Luke Bills, he’s earned sixteen varsity letters. Sixteen. That’s four years and four letters each in basketball, baseball, football and track at Niantic‐Harristown. And that doesn’t count three years on the speech team, two years in Scholastic Bowl, and four years each in concert and jazz band. He’s also done WYSE and RUSE and Student Crime stoppers, coached basketball and football, and volunteered his time for all sorts of worthy efforts, from a homeless shelter to Toys for Kids and roadside clean‐up.  Luke Bills is clearly someone who likes to contribute, to give his best. "Athletic participation gives all competitors, from the team’s star to the water boy at the end of the bench, the feeling of self‐satisfaction," Luke contends. "When a competitor gives his best effort and is part of a family of players, winning and losing quickly become irrelevant."  NOW After graduating as the Valedictorian of his high school class, Luke went on to earn a Bachelor of Science from Millikin University, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude, and then an MBA from Duke University.  During his time at Millikin, Luke was a Presidential Scholar, Kemper Scholar, two‐time Scovill Award winner and a Rhodes Scholar nominee.   Luke joined Colorado Casualty Insurance Company, a member of Liberty Mutual Group, as a Regional Vice President in 2009. At Colorado Casualty, Luke oversees insurance operations in the states of Colorado, Wyoming and Utah.  Prior to his time at Colorado Casualty Insurance Company, Luke held responsibilities in the areas of agency management and marketing strategy for America First Insurance Company.  During 2007 and 2008, Luke had a leading role in the integrations of Liberty Mutual’s acquisitions of Ohio Casualty Insurance and Safeco Insurance.  Prior to his time at America First, Luke was a professional liability underwriter for AIG, specializing in Directors & Officers Insurance for publically traded companies.   Luke currently resides in Highlands Ranch, Colorado with his wife Jodi and son Nathan.    LOOKING BACK “Being selected to the 1999 IHSA All‐State Academic Team was a tremendous honor.  Using the skills and confidence gained through my high school academic and co‐curricular experiences, I was able to springboard into college and beyond.  Today, many of the skills I employ on a daily basis: hard work, learning from failures, perseverance, can be traced back to lessons learned during my time playing high school athletics.”          

ALL‐STATE ACADEMIC  TEAM ‐ WHERE ARE THEY NOW   CAROLYN AIKEN Benton 2000‐01 All‐State Academic Team   THEN  (from the 2001 program bio) When her peers at Benton High School were asked to describe Carolyn Aiken, comments included "if you need her, she'll be there," "she always talks to everyone," and "she's a leader, honest and friendly to everybody." As an example of Carolyn's commitment to teammates and friends, her after‐school hours consist of practicing with the golf, basketball or track teams, along with school musical practice, jazz band practice, speech practice, or helping a fellow student review for an algebra exam. She has also found time in busy schedule to serve on the Student Council, school newspaper, yearbook, Prom Committee and Fellowship of Christian Athletes, where she is co‐president this year.  

In her nominating essay, Carolyn states: "I believe the first step to a good education is the desire to learn and succeed. Participating in extracurricular activities has given me the desire to succeed in activities and in the classroom. Extracurricular activities have given me the confidence I need to succeed, the ability to work well with others, and travel experience."  NOW Carolyn graduated as her high school class Valedictorian and then moved on to the University of Illinois, where she graduated with honors with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marketing.  During her time in Champaign, she took on leadership roles in several student organizations, including Student Ambassadors, Business Council and as President of the Alpha Phi campus chapter. She also studied abroad in Vienna, Austria at the Vienna University School of Business and Economics in 2004, visiting over 20 countries during her time in Europe.   After graduating, she accepted a position with British Petroleum (BP) in Chicago. She was a part of the U.S. Convenience Retail business unit for the Fortune 5 company, working on projects to enhance the customer experience, reduce costs  and improve operational efficiency for field employees. Her greatest challenge came as a Forecast & Allocations Analyst on the Gulf Coast, as she balanced customer needs against a waning fuel supply when Hurricane Rita and Hurricane Ike struck within weeks of each other in 2008.  Carolyn became a student again this fall, as she is currently working on a joint Juris Doctorate/MBA degree from Washington University in St. Louis. She hopes to work in Corporate/Business Law or as In‐House Counsel for a large organization.
