The fes-tival was held April 25, inthe Blank Honors CenterAtrium.

Verma is an integrativephysiology major workingwith mentor Susan Hagen

in the surgery department.His research was titled,“Are Medical StudentsLearning What FacultyMembers are Trying toTeach?” He is the son ofRajinder and Asha Verma.

Verma received recogni-tion as an ICRU ResearchFellow to pursue a specificresearch question andreceived $2,500 for the2008-09 academic year.He will again be supportedfor the 2009-10 year as aICRU Research Fellow andalso received the award, asa ICRU Summer ResearchFellow with a $2,500stipend for this summer.

Jaycees honoredat state convention

MMAASSOONN CCIITTYY — TheMason City Jaycees chap-ter was honored at therecent Iowa Jaycees mid-year all state convention inCharles City.

National awards werealso officially given fromthe national year-endconference held in CrystalRiver, Fla., in March. TheMason City Jayceesreceived several member-ship awards and was rec-ognized as the ninth bestchapter in the country.Iowa was also recognizedas the number one state inthe nation at the event.

At the state convention

in Charles City, the MasonCity Jaycees received thefollowing awards for theirprogramming: Outstand-ing Mid-Year MembershipProject for Buffalo WildWings M-Night, Out-standing Mid-Year Envi-ronmental Project forEvans Preserve Earth DayCleanup, and the Mid-Year Gail Marshall Memo-rial Award for HockeyShots, a youth hockeyskills competition.

On an individual basis,Mason City members JulieBauer and Joshua Massonwere awarded their sixthdegrees. Degrees are givenas a way to measure thewell-roundedness of anindividual member. The

highest ranking a personcan receive is the tenthdegree. Bauer also receiveda Top Local PresidentAward for mid-year, andMasson was awarded forhis accomplishments asDistrict Director for Pur-ple District 2. Massonachieved the award for TopGrowth District at Mid-Year.

The Mason City Jayceeswas also given Parade ofChapters awards. Paradeof Chapters ranks Jayceechapters across the stateaccording to different cri-teria, then overall. In theProgramming Parade,Mason City ranked sixth.In the MembershipParade, Mason City

ranked first. Overall,Mason City was rankedsecond in the Parade ofChapters.

The Mason City Jayceesis a professional organiza-tion for young people age21 to 41. The Jaycees focuson volunteering, leader-ship development, net-working, and individualdevelopment. The chaptermeets bi-monthly on thesecond Wednesday andthe fourth Tuesday of eachmonth at 6 p.m. at PizzaRanch in Mason City.

MMAASSOONN CCIITTYY — SaraBerner, and Katie Hay-good, both of Mason City,were awarded scholarshipsfrom the Iowa P.E.O. Pro-ject Fund. P.E.O ChapterIW, of Mason City, spon-sored both students.

Berner was awarded a$3,500 scholarship. She isa student at the Universityof Northern Iowa, CedarFalls.

Haygood was awarded a$1,500 scholarship. She isa 2009 graduate of MasonCity High School and willattend North Iowa AreaCommunity College.
