JOHN TESH

There will be one 20-minute intermission. The taking of photographs or use of recording devices is strictly prohibited.

BIOGRAPHYThe host of the nationally syndicated, award-winning

The John Tesh Radio Show – which boasts 8 million loyal listeners daily – JOHN TESH is respected worldwide as a leading figure in entertainment and broadcasting. His 10-year reign as co-host of the popular Entertainment Tonight show made Tesh an American household name. He surprised many when he left the highly visible role to pursue his music full-time, gravitating toward the New Age and Christian Contemporary sound.

Tesh began playing the piano at age 6, and he joined the New York State Symphonic Orchestra in his teens. Tesh’s musical talents were revealed to America when he first appeared on PBS’ Live at Red Rocks. The concert became one of the top money-raisers in the PBS national pledge drive and helped launch Tesh’s debut solo album, 1995’s Live at Red Rocks, which reached RIAA Gold-certified status. Tesh’s other albums, 1995’s A Romantic Christmas and 1997’s Avalon, also attained Gold status.

For years, Tesh has inspired thousands of listeners with his albums A Deeper Faith, Christmas Worship, and The Power of Love, which have all graced the Billboard and Christian music charts. The Power of Love was nominated for a 2003 Grammy for “Best Pop Instrumental Album.” The release of 2003’s A Deeper Faith 2 solidified Tesh’s reputation as a performer who inspires hope.

Tesh’s recent project, the television special Alive: Music & Dance, celebrates the beauty of Ballet and the passion of Hip-Hop dancing. The show, enhanced with colorful light-ing and staging effects, is a high-energy spectacle of music and dance.

Honored by Radio & Records with a 2007 Industry Achievement Award for “Syndicated Personality / Program of the Year,” Tesh is also the recipient of a Keyboard Maga-zine Award and the Associated Press Award for investigative journalism. n

has included concerts and cultural exchanges in China, Japan, and the United States. Zhang has appeared with celebrated orchestras, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Orange County’s Pacific Symphony, Louisiana’s Monroe Symphony Orchestra, Michigan’s Grand Rapids Symphony, North Carolina’s Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle, and Iowa’s Cedar Rapids Symphony Orchestra.

Zhang, who has been playing the double bass since age 9, studied at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China. He has served on the faculty of Northwestern University and was recently appointed assistant professor of double bass at the University of Texas at Austin.

Pianist TOMOKO KASHIWAGI, who began her musical training at age 9, is active in Chamber music groups throughout the Midwest. She holds a master’s degree in music, with a specialty in piano performance, from Indiana University. n

BIOGRAPHIES In 2007, DAXUN ZHANG won the Avery Fisher

Career Grant, becoming only the second double bassist to garner the prestigious honor. The award recognizes and assists instrumentalists and Chamber ensembles who exhibit the talent and potential to launch successful careers. The Washington Post praised Zhang, saying he “plays soulfully, lyrically, and with an arresting delicacy that takes one by surprise. …If the bass is finally to produce a headliner, the instrument can have no better champion than Zhang.”

Zhang also won the 2003 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, becoming the first double bass player to do so in the organization’s history. Zhang was the youngest performer ever to triumph in the International Society of Bassists Solo Competition in 2001. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review said Zhang “offered a new standard on his instrument. His performance took one’s breath away.”

Zhang has performed extensively with Grammy-winning cellist Yo-Yo Ma’s acclaimed Silk Road Project, which

BIOGRAPHIESIn TOGETHER AGAIN: GARY PUCKETT AND

DAVY JONES, the two musical forces treat fans to classic hits. Pop-Rocker GARY PUCKETT stormed the music world with six consecutive Gold albums that featured a long string of Top 10 singles, including Young Girl, Woman Woman, Lady Willpower, Over You, and Don’t Give in to Him. Throughout his career, Puckett has performed on more than 30 television shows and prime-time specials, including a per-formance at the White House for a visiting Prince Charles.

Puckett’s group, The Union Gap, disbanded in the ’70s. Since then, Puckett has released popular solo albums, including In Europe and At Christmas in 2001; and 2002’s Gary Puckett Live, a collection of hits that includes Home, a moving song dedicated to the U.S. troops.

In 1986, Puckett was invited to tour with The Monkees on the group’s successful national reunion concerts. It gave Puckett the chance to work with DAVY JONES, who burst onto the small screen and instantly became a teen heart-throb in the Emmy-winning television series The Monkees. The 1960s show, about a struggling Rock group, launched the real-life Pop-Rock quartet The Monkees, which topped music charts with best-selling singles such as Last Train to

Clarksville, I’m a Believer, I Wanna Be Free, and Daydream Believer.

With Jones at its helm, the group became one of the largest-grossing acts of the time. The band’s album More of the Monkees held a firm spot on the music charts for 70 con-secutive weeks, becoming the 12th biggest-selling album of all time, according to Billboard. The group’s hits that rocked the music charts include A Little Bit Me, a Little Bit You; Pleas-ant Valley Sunday; That Was Then, This Is Now; and (I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone.

While aspiring in his teens to become a professional jockey, Jones was first introduced to acting through roles in British soap operas. He landed the part of mischievous Art-ful Dodger in London’s West End production of Oliver! At age 16, Jones was nominated for a Tony Award for his Broad-way portrayal of the character. The recognition attracted Screen Gems, which was then the television department of Columbia Pictures, and The Monkees television series was created. The series ended in 1968, and the band officially disbanded in 1971. Jones continues to act in theatrical pro-ductions; is an author, composer, and artist; and races horses in his native England. n

BIOGRAPHIESDOWN BY THE RIVERSIDE is a collaboration

featuring the timeless music of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and vocal legends The Blind Boys of Alabama.

Whether performing at Carnegie Hall or Lincoln Center, for British royalty or Thailand’s king, PRESERVATION HALL JAZZ BAND’S mission for more than 45 years is to preserve and perpetuate New Orleans Jazz. In 2006, the ensemble was honored by the President of the United States with the prestigious National Medal of Arts for its efforts.

Preservation Hall Jazz Band began touring in 1963, playing with many pioneers of the early Jazz scene, including Louis Armstrong, Buddy Bolden, Jelly Roll Morton, and Bunk Johnson. The band maintains a vigorous touring schedule, performing more than 150 days a year worldwide. When at home, the ensemble presents traditional New Orleans Jazz at the French Quarter’s historic Preservation Hall building, which is the inspiration behind the group’s name.

In response to Hurricane Katrina, Preservation Hall Jazz Band recorded Made in New Orleans: The Hurricane Sessions, a CD/DVD set of new and unreleased recordings and video footage from Preservation Hall’s more than 40 years as New Orleans’ musical and cultural center. The collection was recently released by Preservation Hall Recordings.

Since 1939, THE BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA has sung a fervent blend of traditional and contemporary Gospel music. A master at bringing out the most spiritual aspects of mainstream music, the group has won legions of loyal fans and widespread acclaim with a repertoire of soul-searching songs and four-part harmony sound. The band, inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, has won Grammys for the albums Spirit of the Century, Higher Ground, Go Tell It on the Mountain, and There Will Be a Light. The group has been featured on 60 Minutes, The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, and the 2005 Grammy Awards telecast. The Blind Boys of Alabama appeared in the 2003 film The Fighting Temptations and was the inspiration for the Steven Bochco television series Blind Justice.

With its recent critically acclaimed album, Down in New Orleans, the long-running ensemble proves it still wields an edge in shaping music history. Recorded with a stellar cast of local singers in the Big Easy, the album is a celebration of the city’s Gospel-influenced soul. n

BIOGRAPHIESFounded in 2001, LA CATRINA QUARTET’s mission is to

promote Mexican and Latin American Classical music, perform the masterworks of the string quartet repertoire, and work closely with living composers to promote the performance of new music.

In 2007, the quartet was featured as one of the next genera-tion of Classical stars in a showcase performance at Carnegie Hall for hundreds of concert promoters from around the world. The en-semble was selected through the highly competitive and prestigious Young Performers Career Advancement program.

One of the group’s biggest achievements is the publication by Arsis Press titled Our Hands Were Tightly Clenched. The work, written by composer Zae Munn, premiered in 2003. The group has recorded works by Mexican composer Germán Romero and col-laborated with several other composers, including renowned Cuban clarinetist Alfredo Valdés-Brito. La Catrina Quartet has received numerous awards and recognition, including Western Michigan University’s “All-University Research and Creative Scholar Award.” At Kent State University, the Miami String Quartet invited the group to perform Felix Mendelssohn’s Octet in E-flat Major.

La Catrina Quartet performs regularly for San Miguel de Al-lende’s Chamber music series, Pro Musica. Last year, the quartet was in residence for two weeks in Hickory, North Carolina, where it was featured in the Western Piedmont Symphony Orchestra’s Chamber Classics series as part of a one-year search for the new Quartet-in-Residence. La Catrina Quartet won a three-year appointment, which began in 2007.

For two years, the quartet conducted a two-week Chamber music summer camp at Kent Sate University’s School of Music and a residency in San Miguel de Allende, where the group collaborated with the Brentano Quartet. La Catrina Quartet is quartet-in-resi-dence of the Conservatorio de Las Rosas’ summer quartet program, and its members are adjunct faculty at Lenoir-Rhyne College in North Carolina.

BIOGRAPHYInspired after seeing Frank Sinatra perform at his high

school, JACK JONES decided to pursue a music career. His first demo, on which he sang This Could Be the Start of Something Big, captured the attention of a club owner who booked Jones for a three-week run. The gig gave him valuable exposure, and Jones was signed to a music label.

His rise to the top has included consistently sold-out shows and more than 50 albums, including The Race Is On, Lady, Call Me Irresponsible, and What I Did for Love. Seventeen of Jones’ albums charted Billboard’s Top 20. The legendary crooner won two Grammys for “Best Pop Male Vocal Performance” and he was nomi-nated for the songs The Impossible Dream; Wives and Lovers; Lollipops and Roses; and the album Jack Jones Paints a Tribute to Tony Bennett, in which Jones pays homage to his longtime friend and American icon.

The New York Times proclaimed: “Note for note, phrase by phrase,” Jones “is arguably the most technically accom-plished male Pop singer of a vanishing ilk.” His singing, said the paper, “flows from a soft, perfectly intoned middle and upper register in which sustained notes trail into the ether like silk ribbons.”

There will be one 20-minute intermission. The taking of photographs or use of recording devices is strictly prohibited.

In addition to a successful recording career, Jones has performed to wide applause in musical theater, appearing in Guys and Dolls, South Pacific, She Loves Me, and Pajama Game. He also received critical acclaim for his portrayal of

Don Quixote in the national tour of Man of La Mancha. He was a staple on televi-sion variety shows in the ’60s and ’70s, including Toast of the Town (also known as The Ed Sullivan Show), The Andy Williams Show, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, Bandstand, and The Steve Allen Show. Many Americans recognize Jones’ voice on the theme song for the popular televi-sion series The Love Boat, on which he also guest-starred.

In the early summer of 2008, the Holiday Inn Hotels and Resorts launched its M.B.A. (Master’s in Business Ac-commodations) marketing campaign bringing the voice of Jones to a new recording of The Love Boat Theme. He also recently shared his voice with a whole new generation when he sang Boat of Romance as part of an episode on the Emmy-nominated Disney Channel animated musical television series Phineas and Ferb. This year marks Jones’ 50th anniver-sary performing for audiences around the world. n

BIOGRAPHIESAN IRISH CHRISTMAS IN AMERICA explores

Ireland’s age-old customs with the modern artistry of the country’s finest performers, including award-winning vocalist Cara Dillon and the highly acclaimed band Téada. National Geographic Live! called the show “a heartwarming and entertaining presentation of seasonal cultural traditions from the Emerald Isle.” The festive production presents the traditions and tunes of Ireland with an evocative photographic slide show, which is enhanced by an engaging narrative rich in historical context. Stunning Irish step dancing and magical sounds from the Irish harp and Uilleann pipes round out the extravaganza.

Chosen in 2003 by Irish Music Magazine as “Best Traditional Newcomers,” the heralded TÉADA quintet has earned an international reputation for staging knock-out live shows. “A new and fresh face in Irish music, Téada is a band to watch out for,” predicted The Irish Voice. Founded in 2001, Téada has won over fans and critics with its signature sound– an intoxicating mix that is modern in its energetic dance rhythms, but also quaint with its strong echoes of musical styles from the past. The ensemble is frequently featured as a headline performer at major music festivals throughout the
