EDITORIALCongratulations to all those who won awards and certificates at the Oiche Buiochas night recently. Iwant to thank all those who nominated me and I was humbled to receive an award as I'm sure were theother nominees. Since I came to Claregalway, I found myself becoming involved in various activities.Claregalway is renowned for being very community focussed and each newcomer brings new ideas. To me the community starts with me and what I can do for it. We could all bury ourselves in isolationand watch others get on with things. Our roots are in community and hold us together when the stormcomes. The parish is a scaffolding for the whole community. We have so many varied associationsand clubs and so many friends can be made along the way by becoming involved and reaching out.Our Parist Priest, Canon Noel Mullin has delivered so many thought provoking homilies to the packedcongregations weekly which helps us all on our journey through life. We are so blessed to have him inour midst. The transformation of Claregalway is coming together at great speed and it would be great if wecould get involved in the Tidy Towns competition. I am appealing to anyone out there who wouldlike to come on board and get a committee up and running to initiate this process. You can contactme at 086-3913852 if interested. It would be a great way for the community to work together and bea place of pride for the people of the parish and passers through. There are many splendid examplesof Tidy Towns all over Ireland. Let Claregalway be the next town to come on board! It's great to see the No Name Club so popular with the youth of the parish. Well done and continuedsuccess to the team behind it.Gardening fever is at an all time high now and a visit to Horkan's is a must for all gardeners. Lots ofcolour and ideas in store. See you there!! Until next time,

CHICKENPOXChickenpox is a very common illness that causes a rash and can make you feel generallyunwell. It is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, one of the herpes viruses. "Varicella" refersto the initial infection known as chickenpox and "zoster" refers to its reactivation in laterlife, presenting as shingles.Chickenpox mainly affects children; more than 90% of people have had it by the age of 15.Most children catch chickenpox in pre-school or early school years, there are outbreaksmost years especially in winter and early spring. Once the symptoms have cleared up, thevirus remains in the body and is kept at bay by the immune system. At any time later in lifethe virus can be reactivated, causing shingles. You can't get shingles from someone who haschickenpox.Symptoms of chickenpox can include headache, fever, sore throat, backache and a generalfeeling of being unwell, this is normally the pre-rash phase, then small itchy reddish spotsform on the skin surface, normally on the face and scalp first which then spread to thechest, arms and legs. The time from catching the virus to the rash forming is known asthe incubation period which usually takes between 5 and 20 days. The spots go on to formraised papules and can develop into small blisters called vesicles. These then form intopustules which crust over and heal, usually taking a little over 2weeks.The spots are usually very itchy. Generally the illness is milder in children than adults. Thevirus is spread by direct contact with a person who has broken chickenpox blisters, indirectcontact with clothes etc, which are infected with fluid leaks from the vesicles, saliva ornasal discharge, and small airborne droplets of infected mucus or fluid. People incubatingchickenpox are not infectious immediately and only become so from about 2 days beforethe rash appears until five days later.Treatments include eurax or calamine lotion or cream to relieve the itch, antihistaminetablets or liquid help to reduce the skin reaction caused by the virus, paracetamol for feverand headache and sometimes for at risk groups antiviral drugs like acyclovir are used.

P a g e 1 0 N u a ch t C h la ir , M a v 2 00 8CLAREGALWAY BY-PASSAmeeting of Claregalway residents was held in the Parish Meeting Room on 17thApril2008. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the up-to-date position of the By-pass forClaregalway.Written replies from Minister for transport Noel Dempsey given to questions in SeanadEireann from Senator Fidelma Healy Eames (13 February 08) and in the Dail from DeputyPadraic McCormack (2April 08 Ref.11745),stated:"In addition to the development of the N17Tuam-Galway Motorway, which will provideconsiderable relief to the town of Claregalway, Galway Co.Co. has approached the Departmentof Transport in relation to possible funding for an interim relief road. This proposal was putforward on the basis that it would provide relief from traffic congestion, in advance of themotorway, but also on the basis that a new road in the area would open up land for muchneeded housing and related development. A road designed to facilitate such developmentmight qualify for funding under the Department of Transport's regional and local road strategicgrants scheme."It was considered that the last sentence "might qualify for funding" raised uncertainty onGovernment commitment to financial funding. Letters received from Minister Eamon 6Cuivand Cllr. Mary Hoade indicated similar uncertainty about a By-pass being constructed anytimein the near future. From all the communications received in the month prior to April 17,itwould appear that this road will not be built unless one quarter of the cost is contributed byGalway Co.Co.,who will or might build the road.Deputy Noel Grealish and Cllr. Jim Cuddy unexpectedly attended the meeting. DeputyGrealish informed those present that the above information, as well as material published inlocal papers, was not correct. He stated that Minister Noel Dempsey had made a commitmentto him to fund the 20 million required for the By-pass. He confirmed that 20m. is thecorrect cost. Some of this could be recouped by future development in Co.Galway (not just inClaregalway) .Deputy Grealish provided the residents with copies of a letter in which he requested Mr.JohnMorgan, Director of Services, Galway Co.Council to send to Mr.Kevin Ring, Departmentof Transport. The letter listed 30 road schemes in Co.Galway at a projected cost of 370.5million. Mr. Morgan's letter stated: "Galway Co.Co. is aware that the Department of Transportis prepared to provide funding up to 75%of the total cost of these schemes, subject to fundingbeing available and that GalwayCo.Co. raise the remaining 25% locally". Amongst this listthere was no evidence that a By-pass for Claregalway would be ranked as a priority.Deputy Grealish assured the meeting that the By-pass will be completed in the currentGovernment's term of office, before 2012, and that the total funding required of 20m will beprovided by the Government. He also promised to publish this commitment in Nuacht Chlairand local papers.Pat McGrath, RTEMorning Ireland, reported on the meeting on the following morning'sprogramme, where Deputy Grealish again stated that the Government would pay the 20m.The inclusion of the By-pass in the Programme for Government and this recent commitmentare very much welcomed. Publication of this promised commitment is eagerly awaited.

    P a g e 1 2 N u a ch t C h la ir , M a v 2 00 8WHAT IS AGE ACTION IRELAND?

Age Action Ireland is the national organization which works to improve the quality of life of allolder people and their carers. Our aim is to achieve fundamental change in the lives of all olderpeople by empowering them to live full lives as actively engaged citizens and to secure their rightsto comprehensive high quality services according to their changing needs. The majority of our members are older people, but some are careers or caring professionals. Othermembers include voluntary groups, statutory agencies and private/ commercial bodies. We aim to change attitudes and to tackle ageism in all its forms. We believe older people shouldhave the same rights as any other age group and should not be judged by their chronological age.We promote positive ageing and combat age discrimination. What does Age Action do? We inform through our library and information service We educate through life-long learning, training courses and publications We do research on ageing. We support, devise and organize training for carers We lobby government to make life better for all older people We bring together all individuals and groups interested in ageing and older people.About Care & RepairThe Care & Repair Programme has been established to carry out "odd-jobs" for the older person(over 65) and provide a be-friending service. The pilot phase of the programme will take place inthe Dublin Docklands area and Galway City. Itis intended to roll out the programme nationallyover the next 3 years. Volunteers are of all ages and both sexes. Some offer specialist skills (e.g.electrical or joinery expertise), whilst others are interested in DIY generally and are willing to giveadvice/ support.Jobs range from replacing light bulbs to fitting door chains and spy-holes or smoke alarms, puttingup shelves, moving light pieces of furniture across a room, and taking down/putting up curtains.Volunteers in effect provide a willing pair of helping hands to do a variety of small tasks that anolder person may find difficult to do.A "job" is expected to take no longer than an hour, though many small tasks may be undertakenduring a visit. Our Service if free of charge, as the client only pays for materials used.DONATIONS ARE ALWAYSWELCOMEMonitoring of the ServiceTo ensure that the Service operates satisfactorily, monitoring forms are issued to clients to seektheir comments and suggestions. How do I arrange to have ajob done?

Lo-Call: 1890 369 369The administrator will put the client's details on to the Small Repairs Database and from there avolunteer will be contacted to arrange a suitable time to call. All volunteers will carry official Care &Repair identification.

UPDATE FROM YOUR LOCALCOUNCILLOR, JIM CUDDY

    P a e 1 4 N u a c h t C h la i r , M a 2 0 0 8

Traffic at Claregalway N.S.The situation with regard to the traffic safety at Claregalway National Schoolhas not progressed very much. Replies have been received from The Dept. ofTransport who passed the issue to the NRA, The Road Safety Authority alsoforwarded the letter to the NRA expressing their serious concerns. The NRA saidit was not their responsibility. The Department of Education is looking into thematter further. At the end of the day it would appear that the responsibility lieswith the Department of Education and they have been made aware of the Health and Safety issuesinvolved so there is a legal obligation on them to act. I will keep you up to date on developments.8al/ymurphy CrossThe danger that exists at Ballymurphy Cross was once again raised by me with Galway Co. Co.at the most recent meeting on April 28th. Even though the council are aware of the danger thatexists they have informed me that no funding is provided in the 2008 road works programme forthis work and that in the absence of such funding it is not possible to undertake the improvementworks in the current year. I will try and have this work included in the programme for 2009.Litter on Airport RoadThe increasing litter problem on the road between the Airport and the Western Motors roundaboutis a cause of serious concern and has been brought to the notice of the Local Area Office. The replyI have got back is that litter control is undertaken on an ongoing basis within the limits of availableresources. I don't think this is sufficient having regard to the fact that this is the main roadbetween Galway City and the Airport.CCTV Camera at CregmoreRecently the CCTVcamera that was installed at the bottle banks at Cregmore was deliberatelydamaged and had to be taken away for repairs. The camera will be put back as soon as possible.Itis sad to see this type of damage being done to public property. The camera is there to preventthe illegal dumping oflitter. I would like to take this opportunity of commending the CregmoreResidents Association ( CARA) for all their hard work for their community.Community AlertNow that the Cregmore Community Alert scheme is up and running it is up to all in the area to givetheir full support to those operating the scheme. Itcan only be good for the area. The action grouphas already acquired the community alert signs and I have asked the council to erect them as soonas possible.CongratulationsCongratulations to Compantas Lir on reaching this years All Ireland Drama Confined Final Festivalwith their play" The Year of the Hiker".Congratulations also to the Claregalway Development Association for their very successfulorganisation of the Oiche Buiocheas on April 18th. Itwas befitting to see those who have madesuch a contribution to their community honoured.

    Defibrillator Project - Update.

Automated External Defibrillators (AED's) are used to treat victims of sudden cardiac arrest, where the heart has stopped beating as a result of a fatal heart rhythm. An AED is a small, portable, computerised device which reliably analyses the heart rhythm and guides the operator through aseries of visual and verbal prompts, to deliver a shock if one is indicated. This electrical shockenables the heart to restart beating with a normal rhythm. If a shock is delivered within minutes ofcollapse, the person has a much improved chance of survival. Time is the critical factor; thereforein the event of a Cardiac Arrest call 999 or mobile users 112 and ask for the cardiac ambulancethen send someone to get the nearest available AED (Claregalway Hotel) Immediately start CPR(Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) as follows - open up the airway by tilting the persons head andchin. Check for breathing (5 - 10 seconds, no more) if none give 2 short breaths, watch for chest torise and then start chest compressions 30 deep and fast. Continue this process until the AED hasarrived and is ready to be used by the authorised AED operator.To-date Claregalway has one AED (Defibrillator) which is located in the Claregalway Hotel with 4people fully trained as authorised AED operators. Fund raising for a second AED is on target andit is planned that this will be located in the Community Centre. This is the ideal location as it willprovide a service for the National School, GAA grounds, Community Centre and the general publicto the south of the Village. Our plan is to increase the number of authorised AED operators in thevillage and surrounding areas. We hope that members of each of the groups using the CommunityCentre and GAA Club and school personnel will volunteer to train and become authorised AEDoperators. Training is simple and uncomplicated and takes aprox. 4-5 hours to complete. So, if youare interested in volunteering please contact: Jimmy Roche - 086 2606691.Compiled by Michele Rohan

CLAREGALWAY GAA CLUB RESULTSBoys U'16 A Co. League - Claregalway 1-8Athenry2-9Claregalway narrowly lost the decisive league matchagainst Athenry in Claregalway on Tuesday last. Twosoft first half goals were to be the difference. The firsta cruel deflection & the second a close range free kickproved the difference, despite some heroics in goalfrom Jonathan Healy, the highlight being a second halfdouble save. Despite the set backs Claregalway playedgood football in the first half with scores coming fromBrian Kelly (0-2) &Eoghan Commin, Justin Brennan&Ken Hansbury.Half time score Claregalway 0-5 Athenry 2-4.Claregalway threw everything into the second half andperformed well. Three second half points from EoghanCommins and a goal from Philip Doyle a penalty (afterEoin Lynskey got through on goal & despite beingfouled netted superbly). But despite the performance itwas not to be enough - final score 1-8 to 2-9.Bovs U'16 - Comortas Peile Na GaeltachtaThis was a very busy but highly rewarding week forthe U'16 footballers. First round ofthe Comortas sawa trip to Leitir Mor to play the local side. In the end itproved easy for Claregalway but not without a stuggle.Semi -Final- Baile Chlar Na Gail/imhe 2-14Cheathru Rua 1-8.Next came a trip to An Cheathru Rua to play thelocal side. This was an excellent game of football andit was only late in the second half that Claregalwaypulled away to record a victory. Ciaran Harte provedthe unlikely two goal hero with points coming fromEoghan Commins (0-5), who gave an exhibition offreetaking in particular one 40 yard effort off the groundagainst the wind, Ken Hansbury (0-4), Brian Kelly(0-3), Peter Dolan &Kevin Culkeen (0-1) apiece. Ablistering start, two goals from Justin Brennan, thesecond to rival Ronaldo, gave Baile Chlair the perfrectstart. The wind was strong and Baile Chlar built abig lead with futher goals from Johnny Evans (1-1)&Brian Kelly as well as points (0-4) from the free takersupreme Eoghan Commins gave Baile Chlar a halftime lead of 4-5 to 0-2. Baile Chlar defended brilliantlyin the second half, with outstanding displays fromSean Moran, Paul Jacobson, Eamonn Loughlin &Conor King in particular. Second half scores fromman of the match Brian Kelly (0-2) Ken Hansbury &Eoghan Commins, plus a blistering goal from ColmO'Hagan sealed a well deserved victory.

Ladies Junior B - Claregalwav 5-9Salthil/6-10Claregalway Ladies' Junior B's played a tightly-contested game on bank holiday Monday againstSalthill at The Prairie. In a high-scoring contest,Claregalwayjust came up short in the swelteringconditions. The away side started well with DeirdreBrennan, from full-forward, and Eimear 0' Connell, from centre forward, getting early points. Salthill thenscored two points of their own before Claregalway re-took the lead after a flowing team move, that endedup with Deirdre Brennan dancing through the entireSalthill rearguard to score a goaLAs the half woreon, Salthill began to get a grip on the game, and thematch turned into a shoot-out between the opposingfull-forwards. Only some stout defending from theClaregalway backs, with Amy Rohan particularlyinspirational, kept the away side within four points atthe break.Claregalway grafted very hard early in the secondhalf, but unfortunately their work seemed comprisedmore of perspiration than inspiration and Salthill helda ten point lead with ten minutes to go. However, arousing late comeback that was stimulated by somegreat work by Fabienne Cooney at midfield led toClaregalway getting a foothold on the game again. Two goals from Charlotte Cooney, a penalty goal fromMairead Linnane, and a goal and a point from DeirdreBrennan meant Claregalway held the slenderest andmost unlikely ofleads entering injury time. Itwould, however, have been an injustice to Salthill had theylost the game after dominating for large segments andthey scored a goal and two points during injury timeto secure a four point win. Perhaps a draw would havebeen a fairer result, but Claregalway can be proudoftheir trojan effort and comeback.
