2OO8 BLUE KNIGHT SOFTBALL SEASON PREVIEWComing off of a 2007 campaign that sawthe Blue Knight softball team win UrbanaUniversity’s first-ever regular seasonAmerican Mideast Conferencechampionship, Head Coach Nikki Plugerhas great expectations for her 2008squad. The Blue Knights return sevenstarters from the championship team thatwent 23-24 overall and 10-4 in AMC play;plus Pluger brought in 10 talentedrecruits.

“Winning the AMC regular seasonchampionship has helped put Urbanasoftball on the map,” said Pluger. “It’shelped with recruiting and getting ourname out. It’s given us a boost in the rightdirection. Having that confidence will helpget us right back there this season. I can’tgive enough credit to the team.”

The success from 2007 has alreadyreaped benefits. In addition to a top-notchrecruiting class, the Blue Knights alsoreceived votes in the 2008 NAIAPreseason Top 25 poll.

“Being ranked really is an honor for ourprogram and the team. The team isexcited, but they know now there is atarget on their back,” said Pluger. “Eventhe newcomers have a sense that wehave to play each and every game to thebest of our abilities. We won’t be takenlightly now.”

The Blue Knights lost just one senior fromthe starting lineup of the championshipteam, but she was a major factor in theteam’s success: first team all-AMCshortstop Katie Mallett.

“Losing Katie is hard, but hopefully, withthe recruits we’ve brought in, we will fillher shoes,” said Pluger. “They definitelyhave the talent to do so.”

Junior transfer Erica Schroeder (HuberHeights, Ohio) and freshman Tami Lasley(Union, Ohio) will be looked upon to fill inat shortstop this season. Schroedertransferred from Wright State where sheplayed in 49 games for a Raider squadthat won the Horizon Leaguechampionship and played in the NCAA

tournament. Lasley is an all-Stateperformer from Northmont High School.

“Erica has two years of college experience.That has helped her along the way,” saidPluger. “She’s a newcomer to us but sheknows what it means to go to a conferencechampionship and how to win.

“Both Erica and Tami have a great armfor that side of the field,” added Pluger.“They both have a lot of range and cancover a lot of ground. They both knowthe game very well at short and alwaysthink a step ahead.”

On the other side of middle infield atsecond base is senior veteran ErinDowdell (North Ridgeville, Ohio). Dowdellearned all-AMC honors last season afterposting a .950 fielding percentage.Freshman Brittany Ziepfel (Hamilton,Ohio) will also be vying for playing timeat second base.

“Erin always gives 100 percent. Shebrings a lot of strength on the right side.She’ll help the other side of the middleinfield which is new this year,” saidPluger. “Brittany brings a strong bat andarm, plus is an excellent fielder.”

Working the corners for Urbana will besenior Jackie Masur (Cincinnati) at thirdbase and freshmen Maria Hendricks(Urbana, Ohio) and Kayla Nenninger(West Milton, Ohio) battling it out for thestarting spot at first base. Masur, whowas tagged as a second team all-AMC

third baseman in 2007, has started everygame during her three-year career atUrbana and owns a .352 career battingaverage, aided by her team leading .421last season.

“Jackie is a great kid. If she can continueher success from last season, she willhave a great senior year,” said Pluger.“She has a great glove at third, a greatarm and bat. She has everything.

“Maria has a great glove,” Pluger added.“She is not afraid to go after anything andgoes all out.”

The Blue Knights have a solid corps ofoutfielders. Sophomore Brittany Heunen(South Vienna, Ohio) will start in left field,while junior Jessica Tuttle (South Vienna,Ohio) will cover center field, andsophomore Danielle Muterspaw (Xenia,Ohio) will handle right field. FreshmenErin Lein (Toledo, Ohio) and JamieWilliams (Cincinnati) will serve asbackups. The outfielders will be coach byBlue Knight three-time all-AMC centerfielder Bobbi Jones.

“Brittany is always improving,” saidPluger. “She gives that extra push whenthe team needs it. Jessica is experiencedand has the arm for centerfield. Both bring

“Danielle saw some time in the field lastseason and has improved immensely,”added Pluger. “Her fielding has gotten alot stronger.”

Urbana has three solid catchers thisseason who will vie for starting time.Returners Linsey Manning (Fairborn,Ohio) and junior Kendal Schaefer(Fletcher, Ohio) bring a wealth ofexperience for all of Urbana’s newpitchers. Manning, a sophomore, wasnamed second team all-AMC and wasalso named to the all-AMC Freshmanteam. Schaefer has two years ofexperience and batted over .300 as asophomore. Freshman MeganBerkheimer (Thornville, Ohio) will alsosee some time behind the plate.

“Linsey brings a good arm and a greatbat,” said Pluger. “She learned a lot afterstepping up last year. Being named all-conference gives her more of aconfidence boost.

“Kendal has a good arm and is great atblocking,” added Pluger. “Last year herbat really came through for us. She is agood leader and always supporting herteammates.”

Pluger has assembled a solid pitchingstaff that has more depth than any squadshe has had at Urbana. There are fiveplayers in Urbana’s rotation. They arecoached by Kim Sycks, a four-yearstandout at Wright State and formerprofessional pitcher. Junior Katie Cramer(West Carrollton, Ohio) is the lone returnerfor the Blue Knights on the mound.

“We went over goals and one of Katie’smain goals is to keep her ERA down,” saidPluger. “She is working hard and is a hugebenefit to the team.”

Cramer is joined by sophomore transferJessie Swinderman (Glenford, Ohio) andfreshmen Danielle Finley (Milford, Ohio),Ashley Meyer (Cincinnati) and Lasley.

“We have been focusing on pitching andthey have been throwing a lot more.Compared to last year, we are already astep ahead,” said Pluger. “It’s nice to havethe depth we have this year with ourpitchers. The pressure won’t all be on oneperson’s shoulders.”

Pluger believes the Blue Knights will be aforce at the plate this season and improveon their team batting average of .296.

“I think our bats will be a major strengthfor us,” said Pluger. “We have a lot of kidsin the lineup who can step up.”

Nicole Pluger has put BlueKnight softball on theproverbial map. Entering herfourth season as Urbana’shead softball coach, she hasalready led UrbanaUniversity to back-to-backRegion IX tournaments.

Heading into the 2008season her squad attainedan NAIA No. 29 preseasonranking.

In 2007, her softball teamaccomplished a feat noother team at Urbana hasbefore; the Blue Knightswon the American MideastConference South Divisionregular seasonchampionship. Pluger wasnamed AMC and NAIARegion IX Coach of theYear, while six of her playersearned all-AMC accolades,including first team honorsfor senior shortstop KatieMallett. In three seasonsPluger has had 16 playersnamed all-conference andtwo named to the AMCSouth Division all-FreshmanTeam (Jackie Masur andLinsey Manning).

Pluger, of Dayton, Ohio,served as an assistantsoftball coach for SheilaNahrgang at Wright StateUniversity from 1998 to2004 where she helped

guide the WSU program to some of its most successfulseasons. The 2003 Raiders won the Horizon Leaguetournament, defeating the No. 1, 2, 4 and 6 seeds. Thenthe Wright State softball team made history by becomingthe first eighth seed to ever win a game at the NCAARegional tournament, defeating Missouri, 3-1.

The Raiders won 169 games over her career, including36 victories in 2000, a school record for wins in a singleseason. Pluger mentored 11 all-conference athletes, andfour all-Great Lakes Region selections (Amber Kolle,Michelle Demmitt, Annie Divac and Nikki Scott). Pluger

BLUE KNIGHT HEAD COACH NIKKI PLUGER (TOLEDO ‘97)served as an academic advisor and her players got itdone in the classroom as well as they did on the field.The Raiders had the 13th best grade point average inthe nation for a Division I program in 2002.

Prior to her stint at WSU, Pluger coached three years atthe University of Toledo. In her first season with theRockets she created and implemented a recruitingprogram, working as a graduate assistant. She wasnamed interim head coach at Toledo in the fall of 1997and led the squad to a winning season. She then servedas an assistant coach the remainder of the season until1998.

Pluger has worked several softball clinics including: KentState University, Eastern Kentucky University, WrightState Summer and Winter Softball Camps, University ofToledo, Ottawa Hills Softball Recreation Camp, TomJudson’s Pitching and Catching Camps in Grand Rapids,Mich. She also hosted her own youth camp along withBill Van Horn in Kent City, Mich.

Pluger, a native of Grand Rapids, Mich., was a four-yearletter winner on the University of Toledo softball team.She was an all-MAC shortstop for the Rockets, whichled the nation in double plays in NCAA Division I duringher junior season. She earned her bachelor of arts degreein commercial recreation from Toledo.

Pluger played her high school softball at Northview, whereshe was a two-time all-conference, all-District and all-State selection. Northview won the 1991 Michigan HighSchool state championship her junior year. Pluger had a.402 career batting average and she holds the schoolrecord for career runs scored (117). She was also amember of the illustrious Northview 30-30-30 Club hersophomore, junior and senior years in which she had atleast 30 hits, 30 runs and 30 RBIs. Nicole is the daughterof Gerald and Patricia Pluger of Grand Rapids, Mich.

ASSISTANT COACH KIM SYCKS (WRIGHT STATE ‘O2)Kim Sycks is in her fourth year asassistant coach for the Blue Knights.She specializes in working with thepitchers and first basemen.

Coach Sycks, of Piqua, Ohio,enjoyed a prolific four-year career atWright State University as a pitcherand first baseman. She was namedto the all-Horizon League NewcomerTeam her freshman year. Thefollowing season, in which she threwa no-hitter against Loyola University,

Sycks was named a second team all-Horizon League pitcher.

In 2000, she was honored as a member of the Horizon Leagueall-Tournament team, and earned first team all-conferenceaccolades her junior year as a utility player. Sycks closed out hercareer as a first team all-league first baseman her senior yearand was named the Raider MVP.

Sycks left her mark at WSU, breaking several Raider records,including: homeruns in a season (7), career homeruns (18), careerputouts (775) and career shutouts (13). Coach Sycks had a 2.04ERA over her four-year career, which is third all-time in WSUsoftball history. She is also second in the record books for careerwins (38) and strikeouts (345). She finished with 93 RBIs, second

all-time at WSU.Coach Syckswent on tobecome anundergraduateassistant for theRaiders from2001-2002. Shegraduated withher bachelor ofarts degree inorgan iza t iona lcommunications in 2002.

Following her collegiate career, Sycks played professionally forthe Celina Suns fast pitch softball team.

Sycks played her high school softball at Piqua where she was athree-time all-State selection (twice a first team selection andonce a second team selection). She also earned first team all-GMVC honors. Sycks holds nearly every softball record at PiquaHigh School: career RBIs, career batting average, career wins,career strikeouts and lowest ERA.

Sycks is an escrow officer at the Talon Group in Dayton, Ohio.She is the daughter of Robert and Connie Sycks, and has threesisters, Jenny, Betsey and Cindy.

Jennifer Frey, MA, ATC, a native ofMarysville, Ohio, joined the BlueKnight athletic training staff as theassistant athletic trainer in August of2006. She earned her bachelor ofscience degree in athletic trainingfrom Wright State University in 2003.She holds a master ’s of art ineducation from CumberlandUniversity, Tenn. which she earnedin 2005. She was employed atCumberland as an athletic trainerbefore coming to Urbana.

Krystal Warren is the SportsInformation Director at Urbana.Warren oversees and organizesthe publicity of the university’s14 intercollegiate athletic pro-grams. She is responsible forwriting and editing athletic pub-lications, including mediaguides, game-day programsand press releases. She alsomanages the Blue Knight ath-letics web site.

URBANA UNIVERSITY ACADEMICDEGREE PROGRAMS

The 27,000-square-feet Student Center is one of Urbana University’snewest on-campus facilities. Student Center facilities include aWellness Center, lounge, conference and meeting rooms, snack bar,and a bookstore. In addition, wireless computer service is availablethroughout the facility.

In 2003, a major renovation project was completed atBarclay Hall and adjacent Bailey Hall. The two buildings,which house classrooms, are now connected by anatrium and a secondary walkway.

Urbana University is dedicated to providing superbresidence hall facilities to its students. McConnell Hall(below) was completed in the summer of 2007, andSycamore Residence Hall (left) was completed in 2004.
