    SUBMIT THE PETITION FORM, YOUR STATEMENT AND ALL DOCUMENTATION TO YOUR COLLEGE REGISTRAR

    All enquiries regarding petitions must be made through your college adviser.

    PETITIONS: Students may petition the FacultysCommittee on Standing for an exemption from a rule,regulation or deadline of the Faculty as set out in itsCalendar

    and website at www.artsci.utoronto.ca/current/undergrad-uate/course. In particular refer to the headings: SessionalDates, Degree and Program Requirements, Academic Rulesand Regulations (Petitions and Appeals). Note, however,that petitioning is a serious matter. Petition decisions arebased on the validity of a request. Not all requests aregranted. If students have failed to observe deadlines, toheed warnings or to organize their academic prioritiesaccordingly, or if they have been negligent about theirresponsibilities, then special consideration may not bewarranted. The petition process is not a means to salvagecourses and the academic record, after the fact.

    DEPARTMENTAL ISSUES: Matters involvingterm work, such as the organization of a course,grading practices or the conduct of an instructor fall

    under the authority of the department or collegeoffering the course. Please raise such issues with theinstructor of the course or the appropriatedepartmental or college representative.

    COUNSELLING: The college registrars staff isable to advise students regarding petition proceduresand issues. The staff is not required to support allrequests and may discourage petitions that areunlikely to be granted due to lateness or insufficientgrounds.

    DEADLINES: Specific deadlines have been established for filingpetitions and will not be waived.Term Work: Petitions must be filed before the end of the examinationperiod.Examinations: Requests of any type regarding examinations must befiled within a week of the end of the examination period. Decemberexaminations: at the end of the first week of classes in January. Do notwait until the results are available to petition. Note: There is a feedeferred examinations: $70.00 for one, and $140.00 maximum.Late withdrawal without academic penalty/changes to the record

    (courses, status) Petitions must be filed within six months of the endof the session in which the course was taken or the status was earned.

    FILING A PETITION: Write a clearand concise statement of the reasonswhy compliance with the rule,regulation or deadline is/was notpossible, or why special considerationis being requested. The statementshould be no more than two pages,double-spaced in 12-point font orlegibly hand-written. All petitions must

    be supported by appropriatedocumentation and submitted to thecollege registrar with this form. Ifdocumentation is not submitted withinthree weeks of initiating a petition, thepetition may not be accepted. Note thatit can take at least a week before theCommittee on Standing receives apetition from your college. Incompleteor late petitions will not be forwarded tothe Faculty.

    Medical Documentation: The faculty will accept only the Universityof Toronto Student Medical Certificate in support of petitions that citeillness as the reason for the request. A copy of the certificate is foundin the Registration Handbook and Timetable, on the University ofToronto web site at www.healthservice.utoronto.ca, and at various ofthe University. Please read the Calendar entry, Appeals and Petitions,or refer to the Web atwww.artsci.utoronto.ca/current/undergraduate/forms

    RESPONSE TIME: The Committee on Standing can normally respond to most petitions within three weeks of receipt.If incomplete documentation or an insufficient statement has been provided or documentation is delayed, the college staffwill not forward a petition to the Faculty. Please contact the college registrar with questions or concerns if a decisionseems to be unduly delayed. Petition decisions can take several weeks to be issued if they are returned to the college forlack of sufficient information, if they need to be referred to instructors for further comment and recommendation, or if thepetition must go to a full Committee meeting. DECISIONS WILL BE SENT TO YOUR UTORONTO EMAILACCOUNT
