WHERE ARE YOU and WHERE ARE YOU SUPPOSED
TO BE?
OUT OF THE BLUE
Those of you who have been around for more than a twinkling of
time can attest to the basic premise that real inspiration comes
from those people in your experience who have left an indelible
footprint on your life. Something they said, something they did,
some nugget of wisdom they passed along… whatever the case, we
all can think of someone right now who has made one of those
impressions on our life that we will never forget.
The October recipient of the OUT OF THE BLUE AWARD, was
a bit shocked and overwhelmed when Yvette Lewis chose me as
the winner. My intentions when I began this column several
months ago were to honor deserving people who have given
inspiration to another just by being themselves, just by doing a
good work in their own environment. The real plus to this process,
is that the recipient from the month prior gets to choose the next
OUT OF THE BLUE recipient to be honored in the next published
Early Bird, so, I get to pick again... which is a good thing.
We are fortunate to have an enormous group of many people to
choose from who are more than worthy of mention for an award
such as this... but, I would venture to say, that if I were to poll any
number of them as to who they would consider an inspiration, a
tireless worker, a loyal friend and joyful in even those times they
don’t really feel like it, one name would be present on nearly every
list.
With over 23 years of work experience, this person has developed
a reputation of greeting every task with the same breath of fresh air
as the last. Hungry for learning, this person strives to perfect their
craft in numerous classes, certification, and a committed
involvement in any number of responsibilities at one time...
whenever they are asked to do something, they respond with the
same willingness of heart and attitude needed. As you would
expect, our recipient is very involved with their two children, and
is often found at numerous sporting events supporting them in all
areas of their involvement and giving even more of their sense of
pride and loyalty to those closest to their hearts....
It is with great respect and joy that I bestow this, the fourth OUT
OF THE BLUE AWARD to one of the most deserving recipients
and a friend to us all:

I don’t have to tell you about HOLIDAY STRESS... 1/3 of American’s have it, feel it, or create it every 12th month of every year and there is really only one thing we can do about it... GET READY TO DEAL WITH IT. Here are six (6) steps (of the forty zillion out there) that you might want to consider for the relief of stress, as reported and compiled by Dr. Neil Solomon from the National Mental Health Association: TALK IT OUT – When something worries
you, don’t bottle it up... all that does is make
the problem worse, and the solution more
painful to attain.
GET AWAY FOR A WHILE – When
something is bothering you, don’t hesitate to
change the scenery for a while and step away
from the madness.
WORK OFF YOUR FRUSTRATION – Do
something constructive with the pent up energy.
Jump into some physical activity at the gym or
take a long walk.
 DO SOMETHING FOR SOMEONE –
Giving something to someone else is such a
“high”... when you find yourself starting to
worry about your woes, reach out to another
and heal yourself in the process.
TAKE ONE THING AT A TIME –
Prioritize your tasks and dig into them one at a
time, setting aside all of the rest for the time
being... unload your overload.
SHUN THE “SUPERMAN” URGE – No one
can be perfect in everything... don’t try to be.
And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling,
how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without
packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled 'till his puzzler was sore. Then
the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before. What if Christmas, he thought,
doesn't come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.
~ Dr. Seuss
The Closing Chapter of President Mark Hutchison
The days of the Hollywood Western movie have quietly faded into the archives of a storied history of raw, gritty actors, who brought to life a truly wild, wild west to our television and movie theater screens. It was hard to hide the reality brought to a Western set... with bullets flying, horses galloping, Indians scalping and great expanses of untamed land being explored with dangers lurking behind every sagebrush and tumbleweed... today, it is a hard act to follow to try to duplicate the passion and talent brought to the genre in the early days of the Silver Screen. For CO-OPP, the comparison is found best in the level of professionalism brought to the forefront and a passion to grow beyond our own expectations. Two years ago, Mark HutchisonMark HutchisonMark HutchisonMark Hutchison, CPPO, CPPB, C.P.M., followed his own hard-act-to-follow, taking the position of Presidency from R. Fred Myers, CPPO, CPPB, who was a grassroots leader with a passion for his profession and the organization he was a charter member of. Hutchison was no stranger to serving this chapter, having carved his own path in numerous positions of responsibility before winning the Vice Presidency by popular vote. His two years in that role, were served in the shadow of a great leader, giving him time to decide his own agenda and how he wanted to lead. One overriding constant in this Organization is that there is no shortage of great leaders to network with for the parting of their wisdom... and there are none too busy to give it. When Mark came into his own tenure in January of 2007, he did so with passion and drive and the vision to go a little further than his predecessor... just a step or two more to take us to a new untamed trail. He recruited a staff willing to take his challenge, and a few staffers fell into his lap, wanting to serve somewhere, but, not really sure where... so he gave them a mountain and encouraged them to climb... and, they did... In his tenure, CO-OPP has yielded an unprecedented two (2) National Buyers of the Year, in Pharshotam Lal ChannaPharshotam Lal ChannaPharshotam Lal ChannaPharshotam Lal Channa, CPPO, CPPB, CPPM, CPP, CIPM (2007) and Gayle BlankenshipGayle BlankenshipGayle BlankenshipGayle Blankenship, CPPB (2008) and one (1) National Manager of the Year in Barbara Barbara Barbara Barbara JohnsonJohnsonJohnsonJohnson, CPPO, CPPB, C.P.M., MPA (2008). CO-OPP has twice achieved runner-up position as National Mid-Sized Chapter of the Year (2007 and 2008), missing this past July by one place of scoring a tri-fecta in the three highest individual and chapter awards given. Membership has grown to 216 members, from 16̀1, qualifying our Chapter to be listed and competing with the Large Chapters on a National Level for the prestigious chapter awards. Certification numbers have increased in every level with increases over each year and there is a growing sense of pride and desire to authenticate ourselves through certification. National introduced a new level of Certification in association with the Florida Atlantic University, the Executive Certificate Executive Certificate Executive Certificate Executive Certificate in Public Procurementin Public Procurementin Public Procurementin Public Procurement whereby prospective students utilize a Capstone experience using individual research papers, peer critique and evaluation and coursework to reach a new level Certification. Local publications grew by one, with the introduction of Early Bird, which is published on the months when The Procurement Edge is not (those months where there is no General Membership meeting), keeping our members informed always, with a source for information at their fingertips; and, the Chapter Manager, a new Website was purchased and is in the final stages of being released LIVE to the General Membership, which will enhance the work being done in our chapter for an even larger audience. We have learned much, we have reached new levels beyond even our own expectations and we are not finished yet. On the horizon, a new leader, President Elect Joe LombaJoe LombaJoe LombaJoe Lombardirdirdirdi, CPPO, CPPB, stands ready to take the helm, learning from two years of shadowing a great leader, Mark Hutchison, who leaves a legacy rich with accomplishment, earmarking this Chapter as one of the premier organizations in the NIGP family. Throw in a plethora of talented overachievers ready to take on new positions of responsibility and challenge and a chapter of those who are watching and waiting for the one-days that they will step into the fray, wanting to serve but not really sure where... and, like his predecessors, Joe will give them a mountain... and teach them to climb. Not just a leader, not just a bit actor in a since gone to archive story, Mark Hutchison leaves as a real person, willing to take on new challenges and go a little higher, willing to don a sombrero at Forum and mount a steed called Muffin, knowing the picture would be captured forever, but realizing that it’s FUN to be a Purchasing Professional with CO-OPP and unlike the Westerns of old, the names just change, but the passion, the desire and the success is reborn every two years. ~Steve Sammons

Dear Members of TBDCITL,
We are in the midst of the Joyous Christmas Season. One may only pray that your Christmas Shopping is
finished, wrapped and under budget!
People across all nations celebrate Christmas for a couple of reasons. Some celebrate in honor of “The
Reason for the Season”; some celebrate because if it is Christmas, then off to shopping we go; and some just
enjoy celebrating any holiday regardless of the reason.
During every Christmas Season, thousands of people suffer from a recession within their own home. This
year millions are suffering from a world-wide recession. While parents are hurting from a loss of
employment, loss of their homes or lack of funds, it is the children that are hurting the most.
As our children simply do not fully understand the economics of a recession or why they must move to a
new place, very much unlike where they have been living for many years. Please remember to offer a
lending hand.
One of my favorite passages is: “If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need, and shuts
up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?” (1 John 3:17). While Linda and I might not
have a lot of earthly possessions, we attempt to lend a helping hand. Remember the commercial, “Someone
almost stopped and helped …”
Enjoy the Christmas Season and the upcoming New Year. May your 2009 be a little more precious than
2008.
Mark Hutchison, CPPO, CPPB, C.P.M.
