The Maple Leaf Athletic Offices are located in the Roman Ginerich Recreation-Fitness Center adjacent to the front desk. Several of the coaches offices are located along the west end of the building. The front desk can direct visitors to the appropriate office.


ATHLETIC STAFF

Game Programs: Game day programs – to include rosters of both teams, schedules, stats, facts, and game notes – will be available prior to the contests for volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer, and men’s and women’s basketball.

Contest Previews: The official website of Goshen College athletics, www.GoLeafs.net, will have game previews for all conference contest. Previews will include the latest news, notes, stats, and probable starting lineups for each team. Previews will be available several hours before the start of the contest.

Media Passes: Members of the media (public and institutional) may receive free admission into all Goshen College home contests. All requests must be made through the Office of Sports Information in advance of the contest.

Media Interviews/ Requests: The Office of Sports Information is here to serve you. Please make any requests known and we will make reasonable accommodations. Please respect the preparation and concentration of all student-athletes and coaches by conducting all interviews after the contest and outside of the locker rooms, unless otherwise arranged by the Office of Sports Information and the sport-specific coach.

Statistics: Copies of game box scores will be available shortly following the contest in men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, and men’s and women’s basketball. In all other sports, statistics will be provided on www.GoLeafs.net as soon as possible – typically within a few hours, but no longer than 24 hours after completion of contest or meet. In basketball contests, box scores will also be made available at halftime. Current season statistics will be made available upon request or can be accessed through www.GoLeafs.net.

Goshen CollegeTennis Complex

Location: Far east side of GC Athletic Complex at the southern end of 12th StreetBuilt: 1950’sCapacity: 100 in bleachers

Kept in immaculate condition, the Goshen College Tennis Complex is home to the men’s and women’s Maple Leaf tennis squads.The facility features 10 regulation courts, including six with light-ing, allowing for later practice, workout, or even contest times. The 10 courts also allow for the men’s and women’s teams to practice or compete simultaneously.

Other Goshen College Athletic Facilities

Goshen College student-athletes train and compete in some of the best small college athletic facilities in the nation. The Roman Gingerich Recreation-Fitness Center, which opened in 1995, is home to the Maple Leafs’ 14 intercollegiate athletic teams and is one of the newest additions to an ever-growing college campus. The $7.3 million facility houses a variety of athletic and fitness-related activities. Whether you are a member of the golf team hitting balls on the indoor range or a basketball player running on the 200-meter indoor track, the Gingerich Center offers athletes every chance to train and compete success-fully. In addition to these indoor facilities, Goshen College also boasts some of the finest outdoor playing fields in the nation. The baseball, softball and soccer stadiums all are equipped with automatic, in-ground irrigation systems while the 1,500-seat soccer complex is one of the few lighted soccer stadiums at the NAIA level.

THE KING FILESStan King enters his tenth season as the head coach for men’s tennis at Goshen College in 2008. King boasts a career 47-50 team record in nine seaons as head coach of the Leafs. His 2007 squad finished fourth at the MCC Tournament, while the No. 1 doubles team of Sashi Sabanathan and Baekel Girma won Goshen’s first MCC title since the tournament moved to aflightedformatin2000.

King is a 1961 Goshen College graduate and played number one singles and doubles in each of his four years at the institution. For the past eight spring seasons King has also coached the Goshen High School girls’ tennis squad, where his teams have won two sectional titles and one regional champion-ship. His team has also shared the Northern Lakes Conference title in 1999. In 1997 King retired from a 30-year career as a research plant pathologist, most of which was spent living and working in developing countries in the semi-arid tropics. During most of these years King was able to remain active in competitive tennis, participating in tournaments in India, Kenya and Nigeria.

King and his wife, Bonnie, now reside in Goshen. Both their sons attended Goshen College. Their younger son, David, graduated in 2000 after a suc-cessful year as a member of the men’s tennis team during his dad’s first year at the helm.

THE YODER FILESSarah Yoder begins her fourth season as Goshen’s women’s tennis coach in 2008, after a stellar playing career at the institution. Yoder, a 2005 Goshen College graduate and three-year all-conference perform-er for the Leafs, is the program’s eighth head coach in its 35-year history. Yoder inherited a program that she helped build as a four-year player, as Goshen qualified for NAIA Regional competition in all four of those seasons — the only times in school history a Leafs team ac-complished such a feat. Yoder spent three seasons as Goshen’s number one doubles performer and two seasons at number one singles. She was voted to All-Mid-Central Conference honors following her sophomore, junior and senior campaigns, and was team captain in both her junior and senior seasons.

Goshen narrowly missed NAIA Regional qualification in Yoder’s first season as a coach, finishing with a 4-6 record overall and a fifth-place finish in the 2005 MCC Championships. Last season, Goshen bet-tered that mark, finishing 6-4 overall and fourth in the MCC Tournament. “I have a lot of passion for this program and this place,” Yoder said. “I’m excited to continue what we’ve done here. As a former athlete that played recently, I know our players and their games very well, after playing challenge matches with them. I know our conference. I think that I can bring some qualities to this job that will help keep our program heading in the right direction.” Yoder took over the Leafs’ program in 2005 with a variety of coaching experiences under her belt. Over the past 13 years Yoder has offered group tennis lessons to area youth and has given private tennis lessons for eight years. She worked at the Goshen YWCA as a tennis instructor for one year and has served as Bethany Christian High School’s assistant girls’ tennis coach for the past three years. Yoder graduated from Goshen College with a degree in psychology, maintain ing a 4.0 GPA throughout her four years on campus. As a result her outstanding academic and athletic performance, Yoder was a two-time NAIA All-American Scholar Athlete. Yoder is married to her husband of nearly five years, Seth Yoder. The couple reside in Goshen.

2007 SEASON REVIEW

Senior dominated team moves up the MCC ranks

Behind seniors Dianna Diaz and Laurelyn Foderaro, the Goshen College women’s tennis team finished 2008 a slot above a year ago with a seventh-place finish at the MCC Tournament in Fort Wayne. After a disapointing 2007 tournament ended with first-round losses in both singles and doubles, Foderaro, from Harrleysville, Penn-sylvania, regrouped and made a spectacular run which finished with runner-up honors in both fields. Teaming with fellow senior Diaz in No. 1 doubles, the pair took out Spring Arbor in the opening round before knocking off top-seeded Kristin Goeke and Katie Marsh of Taylor in the semifinal. The tandem would eventually lose 9-8 (8-6) in the championship match against a gritty Huntington pair. At No. 2 singles, Foderaro started strong, losing just one game in her first two matches, propelling herself into the finals. Foderaro would fall just short of her first MCC title once again as she dropped a 3-6, 3-6 decision to Taylor’s Kristine Bolinger immediately following her doubles championship match. The Lady Maple Leafs finished the regular season with a 4-7 overall record and 1-7 in MCC play, but that told only part of the story. “We were competitive in all of them (conference matches),” said head coach Sarah Yoder of her team, which scored at least three points in 7-of-8 matches. “But we struggled to win third sets and tiebreakers all year.” Goshen’s lone conference win came in a 7-2 thrashing of St. Francis.

“As a team we have to improve on how we deal with pressure situations. It was never an issue of not working hard enough,” said the third-year leader Yoder. “This comes from playing lots and lots of competitive tennis all year round.” All four of Goshen’s points at the MCC Champion-ships were off the racquets of seniors Diaz and Foderaro leaving a gaping hole for 2008. “We will greatly miss all three of our seniors in Diana, Laurelyn and Janie (Beck),” Yoder said following the MCC tournament. “Already our younger players are talking about ways to work on our game in the off-season and I think they see how we will need everyone to step up next year and take on larger roles on the team.”

After posting a 4-2 regular-season record at the No. 1 doubles spot, Senior Beakel Girma teamed with first-year Sashi Sabanathan for Goshen’s first championship since the tournament moved to a flighted format in 2000. The pair made quick work of Grace College in a 8-3 win in the opening round before knocking off the second-seeded Bethel College tandem of Kiko Cortez and Jered Shriner 8-6. The win put them in the final with fourth-seeded Ben Bischoff and Micah May, which they won by a 8-4 count. Sabanathan and Girma led the Maple Leafs all season as Goshen went 4-6 overall and 2-5 in MCC play and the pair were both named to the All Confer-ence team. Sabanathan also reached the cham-pionship round at No. 2 singles before

falling to Jorge Brumicky of Taylor University 6-2, 6-3. Girma (No. 1 sin-gles), freshman Alex Dominguez (No. 3 singles) and sophomore Joel King (No. 4 singles) all picked up points for Gos-hen at the weekend’s tournament. “I am pleased that we were a much improved and more competitive team in 2007 than in any of the previous three years,” explained King. “Through our MCC round robin record was the same in 2006, our 2007 losses were extreme-ly close.” In fact, those five losses came by just a combined 11 team points, includ-ing 4-5 decisions against Marian Col-lege and Indiana Wesleyan University. The Maple Leafs certainly made the most of their wins, taking a 9-0 victory over Grace College and 8-1 decisions over Anderson University and Indiana University-Southeast. Expectations now shift to the 2008 season. While King has lost a two-time All MCC performer in Girma, his num-bers two through six from a year ago were all underclassmen. “I am expect-ing a strong group of returning players, and am hoping that our new recruits will be able to fill gaps,” added King.
