Thank you all for another wonderfulyear with the Club; particularly all of

you served as Club officers, organized orhosted events, helped

with the CharityCommittee, or vol-unteered in any ofour other endeavorssuch as the AllBritish Field Meet.

We had a busy 2008, visiting manylocations, learning about cars,

trains, airplanes, and beer, among otherthings. Some of the events the Club heldthis past year included:

• Seeing how the Oregon Food Bankworks;

• Visiting the Evergreen AviationMuseum's restoration shop and museum;

• Learning how the folks at PortlandPowder Coating can coat just about any-thing metallic with just about any color;

• Touring Sauvie Island and learningabout the advantages of collector carinsurance from Hagerty Insurance;

• Riding on an old train through theWashington countryside;

• Participating in the collector car cor-ral at the Portland Historics Races (whereLarry Clemenson and Kym Randolph'sbeautiful BT7 won the best collector caraward) and watching some of our mem-bers and other Healey owners enthusiasti-cally race their vintage cars;

• Having a great tour to Hood River, apicnic on Kent and Judy Lambert's frontporch, and a visit to the Western AntiqueAeroplane and Automobile Museum;

• Enjoying another great drive toCentralia, Washington with an overnightstay at the Olympic Club;

• Yet another great tour (despite a fewadventures) and an overnight stay at GaryJackson's house at Eagle Crest;

• Participating in the 32nd All BritishField Meet over Labor Day weekend andagain watching some of our Club mem-bers race their cars;

• Enjoying a wet, but enjoyable, tourthrough the Coast Range to a great bar-beque at Tom and Skip Monaco's house

Update for 2009Roger Moment October, 2008

There are some important changes regarding the ConcoursGuidelines for next year.

1. George Marinos, who has served as the ConcoursCommittee Treasurer and contact for purchasing copies ofboth the Big Healey and Sprite Guidelines, has decided tostep down after many years of service in this capacity. Hehas done a terrific job and we will all miss working with him.

2. The new person to contact to purchase copies from is:

Mike Osipik39 East 55th Terrace

Kansas City, MO 64113 USA

[email protected]

3. The Guidelines will now be supplied on CD - nomore hard copy. This format will allow us to incorporatemore color photographs, and greatly reduce the price.

4. The new price structure for either the Big Healey or

Sprite Guidelines, including postage, will be:• USA – $20• Canada & Mexico – $25• All other countries – $27

If you wish to purchase both the Sprite and Big Healey ver-sions at the same time, the additional cost for the second CDdisk will just be $15 - no additional postage.

As in the past, Guidelines copies are for the use of the pur-chaser only, and not to be sold or otherwise distributed.

Finally, many owners of Healeys, beyond just those prepar-ing cars for Concours, might also consider obtaining copies,as they hold a wealth of information that can help you deter-mine items that are correct, or not, for your car. Many com-ponents often have been changed over time, and the morecorrect/original a car is when it is offered for sale, the better itwill be received by prospective buyers, and the higher a priceit should bring. It also is easier (and thus less costly) formechanics to trouble-shoot and repair a car where items areas-expected/original (based on shop manuals or parts lists).And you may find things that you don't think are correct mayindeed be so, or even decide that you want to pick up foryour car that odd tool or NOS bit you come across at swapmeets.

Ronald McDonald House needs our helpThe other day while dropping some items off at the west side Ronald McDonald House, one of the staff members asked if we would please remind Healey Clubmembers to save pop tops.

As most of you know, pop tops are used on a variety ofproducts from beer and soda cans to tuna fish and soup cans, topet food and so forth. Since we would give Ronald McDonaldHouse the pop tops, we are still able to get the deposit refundsfrom our local grocers on soda and beer cans.

These tops can be brought to any meeting and given to eitherJan Whittlesey, Glen Enright or Skip Monaco.

Thanks for saving.

in Seaside; and;• Learning about car upholstery

(especially for old cars) from onePortland's best practitioners.

In case all of those activities weren'tenough, some of us also traveled to

Conclave 2008 in San Diego and theNorthwest Meet in Harrison HotSprings, British Columbia; both of whichwere wonderful fun and allowed us tomeet or reacquaint ourselves with thebroader Healey community and see lotsmore of the cars.

As a Club, we also contributed toseveral charities, including the

Oregon Food Bank, the Veteran'sAdministration hospital, the MuscularDystrophy Children's Summer Camp,The Ronald McDonald House, TheCoffee Creek Women's CorrectionCenter Institute, and The Albertina KerrArt Therapy Center.

Finally, as we move from publishingHealey Northwest to communicating

via the internet, we redesigned and rein-vigorated the Club website. Let me adda friendly reminder that all Club mem-bers are encouraged to contribute wordsand photos.

Next year looks like it will be evenbusier for us. We haven't decided

where all we'll be going for tours andactivities yet, but I expect there will besome good ones. If you'd like to lead atour or host a meeting, please contactGeorge Koeber or John Carter and selecta month. George, John, and others alsocan assist you in organizing the event.

The 2009 All British Field Meet willfeature Austin Healey as the featured

marque. We'll need to organize the“town square” display of cars and per-haps, other Healey stuff. The displaycould feature all Healey cars or a singlemodel. Put your thinking caps on and,if you'd like to lead or participate in thiseffort, please contact Doug Auburg or I.

We'll host the Healey NorthwestMeet in September. At the

November meeting, we decided to hold

this event at the Red Lion Hotel inMcMinnville. We have plenty to do toprepare for this get together and ifyou're interested in helping us withsome aspect of organizing and puttingon the Meet, please contact GeorgeKoeber or me so we can include you.

We'll also decide on the locationand start the planning in earnest

for hosting the 2010 Rendezvous, anevent begun in 1975. Please help usselect the location and join us in organ-izing and conducting another greatevent for West Coast Healey owners.

Finally, from June 14-18, the GoldenGate Austin Healey Club will be

hosting the 2009 Rendezvous at JacksonRancheria, in the foothills of the SierraNevada Mountains and about 50 milessoutheast of Sacramento. I'm sure anumber of Club members and othersfrom Washington and British Columbiawill plan to drive down and back for theevent, so if you want start planning atour to or from the event, please do so.

Again, thanks for the fun in 2008 andhope to see you out on the road in

2009.

which he has owned for many years. Ithink he bought it in the late 60's orearly 70's but don`t know for sure.

It was bought by MarcosTrevisan of Switzerland who is a goodfriend of Steve Pike of Australia. Bicwas very involved in the 100S salesback in 1955 and so his frogeye willbe going to a good home as Marcosowns 3 100S`s plus 2 Silverstone`s andwill share the same garage.

Oil Additive - ZDDPMark Schneider

A couple of months ago I had a short item in the web-site about the oil additive ZDDP. Since then I havebeen continuing to read about it, and contacted repre-sentatives of petroleum companies to learn more aboutthe topic. At the January club meeting technical ses-sion I will give the club a short summary of my findingsas well as provide some handouts to take home.

ZDDP is an oil supplement that forms a protective zinc-phosphate film on the surface of metals when it andthey are exposed to high heat and pressure. This hap-pens in a Healey engine when the flat tappets meet thecamshaft. ZDDP prevents parts like cam lobes andlifters from making actual contact. And this reallyreduces the tendency of parts to scuff and gall underheavy-loaded conditions.

Why has this suddenly become an issue? Apparently,while ZDDP protects tappets and cams it eats catalyticconverters for lunch. If you have ever had to pay for acat transplant you already know that this is not a goodthing. We'll talk more about these topics at the Januarymeeting.
