For nearly 100 years, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay has been dedicated to ending animal homelessness and providing care and comfort for those who have no voice - the animals of Hillsborough County. Over the course of its history, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay has experienced tremendous growth and major challenges but most importantly support from the community in its endeavors to serve and protect.

The year 2000 marked a turning point for the organization with the opening of the Spay and Neuter Clinic. The year 2004 mandated another philosophic change with the adoption of the “No Kill for Space” program. However, it was the year 2007, when the Humane Society

marked a place in history for this organization.

In moving forward at a rapid pace, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, through its partnership with Hillsborough County Animal Services, is attempting to end euthanasia as a means of controlling overpopulation and to find a home for every companion animal in Hillsborough County. Through the efforts of a knowlegable and dedicated staff and with a hightened awareness of the needy and those at risk in our community, we feel our goals will become, not a dream, but a reality.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, the Advisory Board of Directors, and our staff and volunteers, a sincere thank you.

Holly O’Brien, PresidentThe Humane Society Board of Directors

P

2008 was a year for the Humane Society of Tampa Bay to reach out to pet owners in our community to help them during these difficult economic times. We started our free food assistance program for people who had lost their jobs and just couldn’t afford to feed their pets. By giving them a simple bag of dog or cat food, we have kept hundreds of animals in their own home rather than being turned in to a shelter. We also planned our first shot clinic that was held in an economically depressed area so that pets could remain healthy by receiving their free vaccinations. We continue to spay and neuter dogs and cats at very reasonable rates so that animals can be sterilized and not add to our over population problem. We provided surgery to the public’s animals just under 10,000 times which broke a record for us since we opened our clinic in 2000. In fact, in 2008, we completed our 50,000th spay/neuter which translates to thousands of animals not being born.

This year Oprah gave all humane agencies a boost by making it “cool” to adopt an animal from a shelter. In fact, our shelter was selected for her program which was the first national recognition that HSTB received. I’m happy to report that we adopted out nearly 5000 dogs, cats, puppies and kittens and gave them a second chance at a new life.

On behalf of all of our staff and volunteers, thank you for continuing to support our great programs and help us save lives. We couldn’t do it without you.

Every week, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay drives to Hillsborough County Animal Services, selects adoptable dogs and cats and transports them to our shelter. All are bathed, vaccinated, assessed and then spayed or neutered, prior to going to the adoption floor to find their forever home. Many of these animals might have been euthanized at animal services just because there are too many. These are lives saved by the Humane Society of Tampa Bay.

This has happened through teamwork between agencies at the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, Hillsborough County Animal Services, the ASPCA, No More Homeless Pets, and the Animal Coalition of Tampa. By cooperation and the support of one another, the lives of animals in our community have been enriched.

For nearly 100 years, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay has served our community by providing answers for pets in Tampa Bay. When an adoptable pet needs a home, we provide shelter. When a pet needs to be sterilized to prevent pet overpopulation, we perform low cost spay/neuter. When an aged or injured animal is suffering, we ease their pain as well as that of their owner.

2008 presented a new challenge for the Humane Society of Tampa Bay. When the economy turned to hard times, we heard from more and more people that they couldn’t keep their beloved pets, many had lost their jobs, their hours had been cut, or their homes were in foreclosure and they had to move into an apartment. Sherry Silk, Executive Director of the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, knew something had to be done. She announced that we were going to start giving away free pet food to people in need. It was a great idea, but where were we going to get the food?

We started calling stores and asked if we could pick up broken bags. We located volunteers who could pick up the food weekly and we revised our “Wish List” to put pet food at the top. We also notified the media that we were accepting donations of pet food in order to try to keep pets in their homes. The response

from the community of Tampa Bay was incredible. Even the Tampa Bay Buccaneers did a food drive for us in December. In 2008, we had over 50,000 lbs of food redistributed from those who had to those in need.

When people called us to ask if we could take their pets, we asked them what it would take for them to be able to keep them. They couldn’t afford food or veterinary care for their animals. We could supply pet food and Hillsborough County would supply Spay and Neuter vouchers, but many of the dogs and cats needed vaccinations in order to keep their pets and our community safe.

With a Distemper outbreak in adjoining counties and Panleukopenia in Hillsborough County, something had to be done to get pets vaccinated. We started planning. We found a pharmaceutical company that would donate some of the vaccines, but we’d have to dig into our pockets for the rest. Our partners at Hillsborough County Animal Services researched different communities to see where the need was most severe, and they came up with Sulphur Springs. In January 2009, we conducted the first Free Shot Clinic in Tampa Bay. More than six hundred dogs and cats were vaccinated. The Humane Society of Tampa Bay is proud to continue our history of serving homeless and needy pets in our community.

Tallying the count

2008 started with an awakening that changed the attitude in Hillsborough County toward feral cats. The ASPCA flew Bryan Kortis from Neighborhood Cats to Tampa to host a two day seminar. The goal was to find an answer to the problem that there are more than 200,000 feral cats (street cats) in our community. The Humane Society of Tampa Bay, as well as other animal groups, came together to work to tackle this problem.

Those two days changed our community’s direction and focus on feral cats. In 2006 17,811 cats were euthanized in Hillsborough County. Most of them were feral, abandoned, or kittens born to feral cats.

The Humane Society of Tampa Bay went to work trying to find funds to keep sterilization costs for feral cats at a minimum. We

secured over $60,000 from the ASPCA, PetSmart Charities, and generous donors in 2008 to help defer the costs caregivers pay to get the cats sterilized, immunized and ear-tipped for $10-$15 each. The Spay and Neuter Clinic also changed its hours and dedicated one day a week, Mondays, to feral cats.

In total the Humane Society of Tampa Bay sterilized 3,890 feral cats and 5,769 owned cats. The result of all these labors is that the euthanasia rate for cats in our county has dropped by 9% in the past two years. There is still a long way to go, but the Humane Society of Tampa Bay vows to do everything we can to keep this momentum going. We continue to seek out grants and to work with our partner, Hillsborough County Animal Services, to find the answer to this problem.

New Focus on Ferals

In Fond MemoryFrom the very inception of the Humane Society of Tampa Bay one thing has happened that has impacted the lives of animals in our community more than anything – the death of an animal lover in Tampa Bay. The property where the Humane Society of Tampa Bay resides was a bequest of Allison and Helen M. Holland in 1926. In the 1980’s, half of the property was put up for sale to keep the shelter operating, but the Humane Society of Tampa Bay received a large bequest and was able to pay off the mortgage and keep the property where the Spay and Neuter Clinic sits today. Over the last year we have received over $250,000 in bequests without which we would not have been able to expand the services that we have in 2008.

We mourn the loss of these dear friends, but thank them for remembering the homeless and needy animals in our community.

Our Generous DonorsWe thank each and every one of you for your support in this past year. Without your support, we could not save all the lives that we did in 2008. We would love to mention every donor, but space limitations allow us to recognize by name only those who have contributed $200 or more in 2008, but in our hearts, we thank you all!
