“Thirty-seven years ago, community leaders established a cancer facility to provide local access to the best possible cancer care. Through the dynamic expansion of many of Mary Bird Perkins’ patient care services and programs, there has been phenomenal growth leading to expanded local access. Many more people in need across southeast Louisiana can now avail themselves of our state-of-the-art treatment facilities and educational services. It is inspiring that the vision of the Center’s founders is alive and growing. My wife Susan and I look forward to witnessing the continued growth of Mary Bird Perkins’ mission throughout the southern part of our wonderful state.” richard lipsey, Chairman, MBp Board of Directors

2008 marked another year of exciting progress in the fight against cancer. Because of our dedicated employees, volunteers, Board members, and thousands of community supporters, advocates and ambassadors, the Center and its mission continued to grow and stretch to serve even more people in need.

We began providing services at a new Center in Houma, louisiana, giving Mary Bird perkins the privilege of serving the citizens of the Bayou region. and, more growth was under way with the construction of a fifth location in Gonzales, louisiana which opened in early 2009. this Center enables us to serve the citizens of ascension parish and the surrounding region. Working with our newest hospital partners, terrebonne General Medical Center in Houma and St. elizabeth Hospital in Gonzales, we expanded our mission across southeast louisiana.

through participation in the national Cancer Institute’s (nCI) Community Cancer Centers program (nCCCp) pilot, we – along with our colleagues participating in this important project – continued defining with the nCI what it will take to build a national network of community cancer centers to expand cancer research and deliver the most advanced care to more americans. from prevention and early detection to treatment and survivorship, it is an honor to participate in a national initiative that will help bring more science and research right here to southeast louisiana and to other communities across the nation.

We continued to ensure that our treatment team is provided with the very best tools they need to provide state-of-the-art individualized care by investing significantly in technology for all locations. our medical physics team developed a procedure that is on track to become a best practice standard for post-mastectomy breast cancer patients. and, in partnership with our medical staff, more patients were able to participate in clinical research than ever before.

Working to lessen the burden of cancer on the front end, Mary Bird perkins and its partners screened over 4,300 people through our early detection efforts and received national recognition as the recipient of a unique patient navigation grant that is making an immediate difference in outcomes for cancer screening patients, many of whom have had limited access to life saving services.

Because of your support, Mary Bird perkins Cancer Center can be of service to so many people – and we are not slowing down. 2008 was a banner year and it only fueled the momentum to make sure we never stop, that we never give up the fight against cancer. thank you for your support!

Sincerely,

With the establishment of Mary Bird perkins at tGMC, the Center further demonstrated its steadfast dedication to providing leading-edge cancer care, expert physicians and critical community-based screening and educational outreach programs to residents within their own communities.

“Working with tGMC, going straight to the community to help people better understand how to reduce their risk for cancer and providing free cancer screenings will help save lives,” said renea Duffin, executive director, Care network, MBp.

“We are honored to be a part of the Houma community and to serve those in the fight against cancer with a powerful combination of resources,” said todd Stevens, president and Ceo, MBp. “It is a privilege for Mary Bird perkins to provide the residents of the Bayou region with the opportunity to stay so very close to the people and things they love while receiving cancer treatment.”

Expanding the Reach to the Bayou Region

tthe reach of Mary Bird perkins Cancer Center grew wider in 2008 with the opening of its fourth location – Mary Bird perkins Cancer Center at tGMC in Houma, louisiana. terrebonne General Medical Center (tGMC), Cancer Care Specialists and Mary Bird perkins Cancer Center (MBp) joined forces to fight cancer in the Bayou region through a comprehensive cancer program located on the tGMC campus.

terrebonne parish represents one of the fastest growing parishes in southeast louisiana. and through this partnership, residents of the Bayou region now have access to the full continuum of cancer care: from prevention and early detection to diagnosis, treatment, recovery and survivorship. for cancer patients and caregivers, this means nationally recognized expertise in cancer care that is close to friends, close to family and close to home.

“We believe that local access to enhanced care for the convenience of the community and the combined, expert resources of these three organizations are meeting the vital needs of cancer patients in the area.” Dr. raul Doria, Medical Director,

Mary Bird perkins Cancer Center at tGMC,

Medical oncologist, Cancer Care Specialists

“Together, we are providing an important need – local access to quality care. We are delighted to partner with Mary Bird Perkins and Cancer Care Specialists to meet this incredible need for cancer patients of Terrebonne Parish and the surrounding area.”

rResearch: By definition it means to make an extensive investigation into; to

scrutinize carefully. for arcelio Malcolm, ph.D., it’s not only what he does

for a living, but it’s what he did to save his life. after being diagnosed

with prostate cancer and needing radiation as part of his post-surgical

treatment, Malcolm went to work doing something he has done for the

albemarle Corporation in Baton rouge for 25 years – research. “My ph.D.

is in chemistry so I’ve spent a lot of time doing research in the lab,” said

this man of precision; details; facts. a scientist.

How Malcolm’s prostate cancer came to be diagnosed is an interesting

result of a data-based scientific mind at work in the first place. When

Malcolm was only 22 years old, his father died of liver cancer. Malcolm

made the decision right then and there to get a complete physical every

year after age 40. “physicals in general are a good idea. that way you have

a baseline and a history to go back and look at if necessary,” he explained.

“I worship here in Baton Rouge, my friends are here, and I go to the gym here. I came back to Mary Bird Perkins.” arcelio Malcolm, ph.D.

With seven years of pSa (prostate specific antigen)

blood tests for comparison, a red flag went up

when, at age 47, Malcolm’s routine pSa doubled

its number in nine months. ultimately, he was

diagnosed as having prostate cancer and surgery

ensued with radiation to follow.

It was Malcolm’s urologist who referred him to Dr.

Kenneth lo and Mary Bird perkins Cancer Center.

“as a researcher, I was going to find out everything

about this doctor, Mary Bird perkins, the technology

they had there and my treatment options,” said

Malcolm. “When I left panama in 1978 to attend

graduate school at lSu, I spent five years learning

to do research. So I got started. I was amazed to

discover Dr. lo had a ph.D. in physics. that meant

he not only understood the human body, but he

understood the physics behind radiation as well.”

Malcolm said when he met Dr. lo in person he

virtually barraged him with questions. Malcolm

wanted to know everything up front so he could

feel like he had some control over what would be

happening to him; what he would be dealing with.

“I asked many, many questions. Dr. lo was very

patient; he put me at ease. I felt like I would not be

going in with blinders on.”

Compelled by nature to practice due diligence and

seek a second opinion, Malcolm traveled to Houston.

He was there for a week while they repeated all

the same tests and ultimately recommended the

same exact treatment Dr. lo had put forth. It gave

Malcolm a taste of being away from home, and he

didn’t like it.

“If I had chosen to take my six-to-seven-week treatment in Houston, I would have been there by myself. My wife would have had to stay here in Baton Rouge with our daughter, who was in her first year of high school at the time.”

Malcolm says what happened after he returned

from Houston amazed him. “Dr. lo introduced me

to the staff and I was asked what time would work

for me to come in for my treatments. I was able to

go early in the morning, then go to the gym, pick

up my lunch and go back to the office.” While he

knows no one wants to have cancer, Malcolm said

the feeling of having some control – of still being

able to do all the things he loves to do like going to

church, working out, being close to his family – was

fantastic. “and my doctor not only understood the

human body but also was a ph.D. scientist. I had

everything I needed for my treatment.”

Dr. lo wasn’t the only one who made a lasting

impression on arcelio Malcolm. He has great respect

for the two radiation therapists who regularly

administered his treatments. “laying on that table

is no fun, but those guys were so professional. they

preserved my dignity and did everything to make

me as comfortable as possible. I’ll never forget

them. that says a lot about a facility.”

now an ardent health care advocate, Malcolm takes

advantage of being a prostate cancer survivor by

talking about it. “I encourage my friends to get

annual physicals. the thing about prostate cancer

is you can look healthy and not even know you

have it. I also talk to friends who’ve been diagnosed

and tell them prostate cancer can be treated, even

cured, if it’s detected early enough.” and if they

need radiation treatment? “I recommend Mary Bird

perkins to everyone,” he said.

Brenda Jones is the first to admit that she is one determined woman. “Whatever I put my mind to is what I try to do,” she stated firmly. Born in Convent, louisiana, she raised three children, most of the time working two jobs. today all are college graduates. Jones, 59, now lives in Baton rouge, is employed part time at a parents’ Day out program, helps care for her grandchildren and is involved with her church. In fact, it was a flier her daughter brought home from church about a free breast cancer screening that led to Jones having an overdue mammogram. “My daughter said, ‘Mom, you haven’t gone for a long time,’ and she was right.”

So Jones got herself to the next breast cancer screening Mary Bird perkins Care network was offering that fit her work schedule. “I went to the leo Butler Center. they did a clinical exam, and the doctor felt something that wasn’t right.” that’s when Jones met Gwendolyn Bonton, outreach coordinator with the Care network and patient navigator. “If a problem is detected during the clinical exam, the patient navigator steps in to help the patient through the ensuing process,” Bonton explained. “We tell the patient that because something abnormal was found during the physical exam, further diagnostic tests are necessary. We find out if there are any barriers likely to keep the woman from going to the appointments we’ll

be setting up for her.” Such barriers could include child care needs, transportation, language or job related issues. “If there are any concerns about these things, we try to solve them up front. removing all barriers to the resolution of an abnormal finding is the goal of patient navigation.”

“Gwen, my patient navigator, took care of everything. I didn’t have to do anything. She told me what to do and where to be and would call to check and make sure everything was going okay. She was always there. I felt so special.” Brenda Jones

ultimately the tests indicated that Jones had cancerous tumors in both breasts. Her doctor suggested surgical removal of the tumors followed by radiation. Jones decided instead to have a double mastectomy. Before she went into the hospital, Jones said she went to church and to communion. “at the hospital everyone held hands, and we prayed. I said to myself, ‘I know everything will be okay – I don’t feel like He’s ready for me yet.’”

Jones’ recuperation went so well that she has already been bowling – one of her favorite pastimes. and she’s doing something else. She’s trying to get other women to get screened. “I know of a woman who won’t go because she has a lump and she’s scared. I keep trying to get her to talk to me. I’ll even go with her to the screening. I want her to know they’ll do everything to help her if she needs it. I want her to know that getting screened could save her life.”

Zoraida’s Storyever since she can remember, Zoraida Berrio, age 54, has been taking care of other people’s children. “I’ve been doing it for 23 years,” she said. When her husband died 25 years ago, she left her native Colombia, South america, with her two young daughters and emigrated to Baton rouge where she had family. “again, I started keeping kids. It started with one, then two…,” she laughed. “I am so lucky. I love what I do.”

as passionate as she is about her job, Zoraida admitted it has its drawbacks. “parents bring their kids at 7 and some are here until 5, Monday through friday,” she explained. “I have to work around their schedule, not mine. and, I have no insurance. I tried looking, but the deductible is so high and it doesn’t cover everything. So I go to earl K. long whenever I need medical care.” Zoraida’s eldest daughter is a chief resident there. “tatiana kept telling me about the free breast cancer screenings Mary Bird perkins has for people without insurance. She said since I hadn’t had a mammogram in over two years, I should go. I thought I wouldn’t be able to because of my schedule.” But her daughter told her about one on a Saturday.

“When I went, I had a clinical exam first. they told me the doctor felt something (an abnormality), so I had to go to Woman’s Hospital to have a special mammogram,” she said.

“I was so upset. I kept saying I couldn’t do that because I didn’t have any money, but this lady (patient navigator) was so nice. She told me not to worry about that. She said, ‘We’re going to do what we’re going to do, and that’s that.’” Zoraida Berrio

Charity Gay, Zoraida’s patient navigator, explained that, “I got her set up for the first available diagnostic mammogram at Woman’s Hospital to look specifically at the spot the doctor was concerned about. I told her not to worry about anything else, that we would be there to help her.” after a diagnostic mammogram, a sonogram and a biopsy, Zoraida was told everything was fine. It was only a cyst.

“a lot of people go to screenings and that’s good,” said this loving caretaker of children. “But if you have a problem and someone is there telling you they care about you and they’re going to take care of everything – that makes a big difference.”

BBill and Gail o’Quin have both chosen to make Mary Bird perkins Cancer

Center a priority in their lives. through their respective commitments

of time, talent and treasure as ambassadors, advocates and fundraisers

they have grown to be dedicated, consistent, persuasive and enthusiastic

supporters of Mary Bird perkins and its mission.

“It’s unique for both husband and wife to do as much for a single non-

profit organization as Gail and Bill do for Mary Bird perkins,” said Carolyn

a. Chassee, Cfre, vice president for development and chief development

officer, MBp. “they have opened their home for friends and neighbors to

hear the Mary Bird story; they have opened their hearts to share their very

own personal experiences with Mary Bird perkins as Gail’s daughter and

Bill are both former MBp patients; and they have both shared with great

generosity their personal financial resources to strengthen the Mary Bird

mission. and, Bill and Gail will be chairing the rathbone Division of the

2009 fight Cancer Campaign together.” In addition, Gail serves on the

“People need to learn to make giving a part of their lives. We need to give back to our community because we get so much from it. I’d rather be known by name at Mary Bird Perkins, should I need to go there, than to just be a number somewhere else.” Gail o’Quin

MBp foundation Board of Directors and Bill and

Gail each are anna B. lipsey legacy Builders.

Bill was born in osyka, MS – a town of a little more

than 300 people. His family moved to Baton rouge

when Bill was in the second grade. “My father

died when I was 15. I was an only child, and my

mother struggled to provide for us.” She was the

office manager for Kantrow, Spaht & Weaver for

many years. “She was also a phenomenal person,”

interjected Gail. While Gail admits to having a crush

on Bill from the minute she saw him, they dated in

high school but ultimately married others and Bill

moved away. “I left Baton rouge for 33 years,” said

Bill. “I moved back to marry Gail.” During the time

he was gone from louisiana, Bill became a Captain

in the u.S. army and spent 18 months in Vietnam

as a helicopter pilot. When his tour of duty was up,

he went to work for prudential, retiring in 1994. He

started an internet-based business in 2000 that he,

with his texas partners, now runs out of his home.

Gail’s parents were close friends of both the Bird

and perkins families. She said Mary Bird was like

her aunt, giving her a registered black standard

poodle, a breed she continued to breed and show

for years. She still has two that are descendants of a

poodle named for Mary Bird.

It was one of Gail’s three children by her first

marriage, then 19-year-old daughter Madeleine,

who first needed the services of Mary Bird perkins.

“We have had a long association with Mary Bird,”

said Gail. “Dr. Henkelmann successfully treated

Madeleine for Hodgkin’s disease, we are very

happy to say. She is now 37 and we have a 5 ½ year

old grandson!”

Coincidentally, Bill had been approached just a few

months earlier by frank Mcarthur, a member of

MBp’s annual Giving Campaign (aGC) Cabinet, to

serve as a community volunteer to help raise funds

for the Center. Bill was still dipping his toes in the

water when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Involved in other philanthropic activities as well,

gradually Bill started to increase his involvement

with MBp.

“First my stepdaughter was treated at Mary Bird and seventeen years later I was right behind her. Throughout Madeleine’s and then my own treatment I realized how much the staff becomes part of your family. They are into treating the whole family, not just the medical part of the situation.” Bill o’Quin

In 2007, Bill served as the aGC assistant Chair

and took on the 2008 Chairmanship. His group

of community volunteers set a new fundraising

record at Mary Bird perkins, and Bill received an

email from frank Mcarthur that said, “aren’t you

glad you did this?” Bill’s answer was unequivocal.

“I am. I really am. Being involved in raising money

for such a great cause is very rewarding. You get so

much more out of it on so many levels than just the

money raised.”

tThe Cancer Program of Our Lady of the Lake and Mary Bird Perkins was selected by the National Cancer Institute in 2007 to participate in a pilot program that is working to expand and deliver the latest, most advanced cancer care to a greater number of Americans in communities in which they live. A successful pilot will lead to the nationwide launch of the NCCCP in 2010.

The First Year in Summary

In 2008, the pilot phase of the nCI Community Cancer Centers program (nCCCp) pilot concluded its first of three years. each participating community hospital took steps to accelerate cancer research and raise the quality of care – doing both with a special emphasis on minority and underserved patients.

the 16 participating hospitals made considerable progress toward achieving the major goals of the pilot. all sites accrued more patients to clinical trials. Some began moving their decentralized, paper-based records systems into computerized data that will improve both cancer research and patient care, while enabling minorities and underserved patients to more effectively benefit from the most up-to-date, evidence-based care.

nCCCp pilot hospitals are at the forefront of putting into place national standards for handling biospecimens bound for research laboratories. these standards will improve cancer research and

“With the success of the NCCCP pilot,

we hope to expand the number of participating hospitals to reach an even broader range of communities in the future. And we will achieve ultimate success by the cancers prevented or diagnosed at their earliest stages, and by the numbers of lives saved.”

Dr. John e. niederhuber

Director, national Cancer Institute

Collaborating on a National Visionthe development of advanced therapies custom-tailored to individual patients.

these community hospitals also entered into new collaborations with nCI-designated Cancer Centers located at major research institutions around the country and expanded their relationships with local private medical practice oncology physicians. through these connections, nCI is extending the reach of its research programs into rural, inner-city and underserved communities.

the pilot began to define for nCI what it will take to build a national network of community cancer centers that are fully engaged with the research community and that provide the latest evidence-based, multidisciplinary care and treatment to patients of all racial and ethnic backgrounds and socioeconomic standings in their home communities.

Looking Forward

In the remaining two years of the nCCCp pilot, the sites are working on their individual plans to meet the long-term goals of the initiative. In addition, they will continue collaborating to further strengthen this network of community cancer centers and keep looking ahead to continue learning from this public-private partnership for the best ways to advance state-of-the-art cancer care and research in the community setting.

Launched concerted effort focused on three phase III clinical trials

nCCCp pilot hospitals began screening patients for three nCI Clinical trials Support unit (CtSu) trials. Initial evaluation suggests that this effort has increased the patient accrual rate to each of the three trials for breast, colorectal and lung cancers.

Increased relationships with major research institutions

nCCCp pilot sites increased from 30 to 35 the number of collaborations and other linkages they have with nCI-designated Cancer Centers and other academic biomedical research institutions. this benefits research by linking patients with early- and later-stage clinical trials and gives patients greater access to the latest advances in medical science.

Improved care and expanded clinical trials with breast cancer screening tracking tool

the tracking tool, developed jointly by the pilot hospitals, is being tested as an effective mechanism for monitoring the lag time between initial screening, diagnosis and care, and recruitment for clinical trials, particularly for underserved individuals. pilot hospitals are at various stages of assessing the new tool. one hospital used the tool to cut one week off the average time between cancer screening and follow-up.

Drove patient care improvements with Multidisciplinary Care Model

nCCCp pilot hospitals defined a Multidisciplinary Care (MDC) model for cancer care in a community setting that describes aspects of team care that are critical to overall quality of care.

Standardized collection of medical specimens for research

this group of hospitals is among the early adopters of the nCI Best practices for Biospecimen resources, which aims to improve the quality of medical specimens that are becoming increasingly important for research.

2008 accomplishmentsHere are just a few of the many highlights from the first Year:

www.ncccp.cancer.gov

The NCI Community Cancer Centers Program (NCCCP) pilot is testing the concept of a national network to expand cancer research and deliver the latest, most advanced cancer care to more Americans in their home communities. The NCCCP extends the reach of NCI research into more U.S. states, cities, and towns, including rural areas and inner cities.

In 2008, over $100,000 of Mary Bird perkins’ donations were from community events. MBp seeks applications from organizations and individuals who want to become involved in the fight against cancer by holding a community event. these events are an excellent way for people to consider supporting MBp. every dollar donated from these events goes toward MBp’s steadfast dedication to research, education, outreach and early detection programs.

for Dudley and Beverly Coates, philanthropy in its various

forms has been a part of their lives since they were children.

“each of our parents was very community-minded,” said

Dudley, speaking of both his own father and of Beverly’s. “they

were always doing something to help somebody else with a

problem. It was a way of life – something we both witnessed.

that is really what philanthropy is all about – people helping

people.” from Beverly’s point of view, she said, “It never

occurred to me that it was unusual to contribute money to

causes near and dear to one’s heart. I thought everybody did

that. When you’re involved in your community, you see the

need. there are so many opportunities to give and so many

wonderful organizations that are able to respond to these

needs.”

With your help, the Foundation will make a difference in the future.

the FutuRe oF canceR caRe StaRtS now

everyone in our community can turn to Mary Bird perkins for the cancer care they need.

n the most advanced treatment and support services available.

n awareness and prevention programs that help stop cancer before it starts or catch it early so it can be more successfully treated.

n Vital research that improves care and saves lives.

But We Need To Do More.

With your support, we can make sure services and new advances in cancer care are available for you, your children and your grandchildren through Mary Bird perkins Cancer Center foundation. our mission is simple: build an endowment to fight cancer. this will ensure that patients and families have access to all the services they need – now and in the future – and that valuable cancer research continues.

FoundationIt’s probably no coincidence, then, that these two

people would eventually meet and marry, and

along the way significantly improve the quality

of life for residents of their entire community.

Dudley’s father moved the family from little rock,

arkansas to Baton rouge in 1945 after returning

from WWII. When Beverly was only six years old,

her father – J. theron Brown – relocated his family

from Shreveport to Baton rouge, seeking a future

in the automobile business. While in high school,

Dudley and Beverly were introduced to one another

by their parents, who had become close friends. In

1953, after Dudley graduated from Yale, the two

were married and raised three daughters in Baton

rouge. after 50 years in the investment business,

Dudley is presently Senior Vice president of Wealth

Management with Smith Barney.

Dudley and Beverly Coates support a long list

of deserving non-profit organizations in the

community. as part of their estate and financial

planning, Mary Bird perkins Cancer Center

foundation has been notified of the Coates’ intent

to make a planned gift upon the demise of both

parties. In addition, the couple made an outright

gift to the endowment this year as well. Dudley sits

on the Mary Bird perkins board of directors and

is chairman of the Center’s Governmental affairs

Committee.

When asked why Mary Bird perkins is privileged

to be a major recipient of both Dudley’s time and

treasure, he paused for a moment and thoughtfully

replied, “there are three people I respect a great

deal – Jack rathbone (deceased), richard lipsey

and John Barton, Sr. – who approached me about

being on Mary Bird perkins’ board of directors. I

made my decision based on the fact that anyone

who’s ever been treated there, or who knows

someone who’s been treated there, always speaks

of the compassion they feel the moment they step

through the doors. I believe that starts at the top.

It’s undeniable that Mary Bird perkins has strong

leadership that makes the organization such an

influential part of our community and now in

communities throughout southeast louisiana. I

want to help in any way I can.”

In addressing the phenomenal growth that has

occurred at Mary Bird in such a relatively short time,

Dudley commented, “the whole operation has just

taken off! It has grown and will continue to grow.

It’s not just a Baton rouge institution anymore; it’s

giving a lot more people the opportunity to take

care of their health problems right at home.”

“Mary Bird’s commitment to provide patients with the best radiation therapy options available, and the people who know how to use it, is really the bottom line. Having the medical physicists from the LSU-MBP program on the team is a unique and tremendous benefit for every Mary Bird patient.” Dudley Coates

“What impresses me are the free programs and

cancer screenings Mary Bird offers,” added

Beverly. “It’s just as important to learn about cancer

prevention as it is to know that early detection can

save your life. that bus, the early Bird, seems to

be everywhere trying to screen everybody! I think

that’s wonderful.”

the couple agreed that the cutting-edge treatment

technology Mary Bird offers is, of course, extremely

important. the impact the generosity of this couple

has had on their hometown community in general

is irrefutable. Specifically, their steadfast dedication

to helping ensure the future of cancer care for the

residents of southeast louisiana is saving lives.
