THE COMMUNITY HOUSE Nonprofit for 68 years

The Community House is the only nonprofit organization that delivers both quality recreation and affordable social services that are

deeply rooted in the community, making a difference in the lives of thousands of families and individuals.

Quality recreation programs - The Community House offers programs and services in art, theater, athletics, fitness and group

outings for children, adults, and seniors. These programs give participants an opportunity to meet others with similar

interests and build friendships for social and physical well-being.

Affordable social services - The Community House is vital to the Western Suburbs as an affordable option for social services. Individuals and families use The Community House to meet with qualified, trained

professionals in counseling and therapy. The organization also offers programs for low-income families in the area with the Willowbrook

Corner Initiative, which provides equal opportunities in recreation and learning for disadvantaged groups in order to promote self-sufficiency.

Deeply rooted in local community - For almost 70 years, The Community House has been the source for recreation and social programs in Hinsdale

and the surrounding suburbs. Generations of families have turned to The Community House as a place to hold community events, fundraisers,

theater events, and to meet and socialize.

The Community House serves a broad range of residents from Burr Ridge, Clarendon Hills, Darien, Downers Grove, Hinsdale,

Oak Brook, Westmont, and Willowbrook. The Community House is a 501(c)(3) organization that delivers these programs thanks to grants,

membership fees and the generosity of donors from local communities. Not one penny of tax-based funding goes toward

The Community House.

Visitors to The Community House keep coming back for new learning experiences, counseling support, recreation and volunteer

opportunities. Ultimately, The Community House enriches the quality of life for people of all ages.

Our Mission: Building community through excellence and innovation in socially relevant programs.

TO OUR FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS:

Enclosed is our Annual Report for the twelve month period ending December 31, 2008. This report provides an overview of activities, operating revenues, and expenses for The Community House during that time. Please know how much all of us at The Community House appreciate your contributions as volunteers, as donors, and as program participants. Although 2008 brought with it some extreme economic turbulence, we want you to know that we are using your resources wisely. We are being led by a talented leadership team. We are implementing the right strategies. And we are maintaining the integrity and financial well-being of the organization. The Community House makes a difference in the lives of thousands of families and individuals who need local opportunities for athletics, culture, counseling, learning, friendships, and community connections. Your choice to support The Community House means your dollars go further and reach more people. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, the staff, and the many individuals and families who benefit from The Community House – Thank You! Thank you for your trust, your support, and your patronage as we move forward to keep The Community House Your Place to Gather and Grow for the next 68 years! Sincerely,

Jay Tuthill Chairman of the Board

VOLUNTEER SERVICES

2008 was a banner year for volunteer service! A new program, Second Saturdays Of Service, was created to provide 6th, 7th, and 8th graders with meaningful, educational volunteer experiences for 4 consecutive months in the winter and spring. Students volunteered at a different local organization each month including People’s Resource Center, Mayslake Peabody Estate, COACH Care Center, and DuPage Senior Citizens Council. Building on the growth of youth volunteerism, a second week of Volunteer Camp was added in the summer, with students from 6 different schools traveling to a wide variety of local agencies.

Over 100 high school students used the Volunteer Services department throughout the school year and summer. They served their community in many ways: as assistants in one of our 2 after school programs and summer day camps, as individual tutors, as ushers for our musicals, as helpers with special events, as assistants for Youth Center programs, and as good citizens where needed. College students again ran the Throw the Disc for Jordan Crist Frisbee Tournament which raised $20,000 for scholarships for programs at The Community House. These volunteers organized 22 teams with over 400 participants. In addition to giving their time to The Community House, both adults and youth used the matching services of the Volunteer Services Department and were connected to over 30 local agencies.

The Community House is grateful for all of our volunteers! We thank you for daring to make a difference!
