What is the Challenge?

• Ricoh and Sun Microsystems (joint sponsors) are looking for student software developers to create an innovative Java™ technology based application embedded in Ricoh devices (Multifunctional Products – that print, copy, scan and fax)

• Participants will be given access to Ricoh Java SDKs and emulator via the Developer Challenge website; where there’s also lots of information and hints – including a forum for technical support

• Open to students in teams of 1 or 2 from Universities that have registered

Format of the Challenge• Stage 1 – Emulator Development

From 17 October 2008, once registered, students will be able to download the emulator and development tools (SDK/J) from the resources section on the web site. Contestants develop an embedded Java-based application on the emulator of the Ricoh Multifunctional Product (MFP). Deadline for Development: 16th January 2009

• Stage 2 - MFP Development for National FinalsA jury will select the 4 best applications per country to progress to the 'National Finals'. A Ricoh Multifunctional Product (MFP) will be supplied to the Universities of these teams and the applications should be ported and enhanced from the emulator to the actual device. During the 'National Finals', the national winners will be selected. These teams will progress to a 'Grand (European) Final'. Deadline: National Finals, March 2009 (first 3 weeks of March)

• Stage 3 – Grand (European) FinalThe 'National Winners' from the participating countries will present their applications to a professional jury and one team will be selected at the event as the 'Overall Winner' and win the fully paid trip to the JavaOne 2009 in San Francisco, USA.Deadline: Grand Final (2-5 April 2009, London)
