Quietly, consistently and generously, a broad and diverse collection of donors has helped to build the college scholarships of the California Grocers Association Educational Foundation.
Every year, without fail, the scholarship efforts have grown. In the past 10 years, a total of 1,335 scholarships were awarded, totaling $1,472,500.
For the 2008-09 year, the overall program reached a new height: 260 scholarships totaling $314,000 will be funded. Educations will be enhanced, lives will be changed, and the industry will be better served as a result.
Such a success story would not be possible without the support of CGA member companies and organizations.
The Foundation, which is committed to creating educational opportunities for industry employees and their families, oversees several types of scholar-ships. They include scholarships given by individual donors, several funded by the Association, Legacy awards honoring major names in the industry, and “Piggyback” scholarships that individual companies fund for their own employees and dependents of employees.
Numerous milestones have marked the growth of the programs.
In 2003, Super A Foods, an independent chain in Los Angeles, created the first Legacy award in honor of Lou Amen, Chairman of the firm. The Legacy awards involve a commitment of at least $10,000 over 10 years to fund annual $1,000 scholarships. Since 2003, ten others have been established.
This year, Super A funded over $40,000 in scholar-ships, including the Lou Amen Legacy scholarship and several $2,000 Piggyback scholarships, said Jim Amen, president of the company.
“Education is huge for us,” he said. “Everyone who applied, we gave something to. We’re giving back to our employees.”
The Piggyback program got a big boost three years ago when Dave Hirz, the president of Ralphs Grocery Co. at that time, announced his company would fund $50,000 in Piggyback scholarships. It marked the largest award total the Foundation had seen. Ralphs continues the same level of scholarship giving today.
“An education is something that no one can ever take away from you,” Hirz said at the time of the
announcement. “We, at Ralphs, are committed to doing our part for the youth who are committed to their own education and future.”
Meanwhile, PW Supermarkets of San Jose has been a faithful contributor from the start of the Educational Foundation’s efforts. The chain donated the first Donor scholarships,

has supported numerous Piggyback scholarships, and has consistently contributed to the Foundation’s overall scholarship fund.
This year, PW donated a total of $13,000, including a Legacy scholarship honoring Joey and Florence Franco, founders of PW Supermarkets.
“It’s very rewarding to see our employees and the children of our employees get the financial ability to finish their educations,” said Mike Stigers, President of PW Supermarkets and a staunch supporter of the scholarship programs. n
