Brad Bedortha begins his first fullseason at the helm of the NorthernArizona women's golf team and hewants to stop one trend right away. After three consecutive second-placefinishes at the Big Sky ConferenceChampionships, Bedortha has hissights for his team set one notchhigher.

"Obviously our biggest goal is towin the conference championship,"said Bedortha. "We have been closethe last three years and last year lostby just two shots. That is the first goalon our list."

Bedortha also hopes to improvethe team scoring average, while com-peting for tournament titles each timeout on the course.

"I want to instill a competitivedesire, work ethic and preparation thatwhen you do go to a tournament youare ready to go," said Bedortha. "Whatthe team wants to accomplish can beachieved by getting better at the small-er pieces of the puzzle that will help usget to that point."

Bedortha brings back a lineup thatincludes four of the five players thatteed up at the championships lastspring, including senior Ali Carter whofinished second overall.

Carter is a three-time All-Big SkyConference selection, including first-team honors in 2005 and 2006. Sheowns a 77.1 stroke average over 72rounds in 29 career events. She hasposted 15 top-20 and nine top-10 fin-ishes in her career.

While Carter will be available inthe spring, she will be off during the fallseason while doing student teaching inGermany for her degree requirements. The Lumberjacks also lose three-timeBig Sky Conference Player of the YearSophia Choi, who finished her career

as the most accomplished women'sgolfer in league history.

"Ali will go down in the recordbooks as one of the best players wehave had in school history," saidBedortha. "When Sophia Choi gradu-ates and Ali Carter is gone for asemester, you miss their scoring aver-ages and the way they play and com-pete. We will miss Ali's leadership asthe only senior we have on the roster."

The good news is she will be backfor the championship run in the spring. She will also return to a more experi-enced roster developed during herabsence.

"Ali's absence is giving the otherplayers a chance to play and com-pete," said Bedortha. "They are fight-ing to be in the top five. I feel comfort-able when she comes back the playerswill have the experience."

Sophomore Dakin Banta returnsfor her second season after earningAll-Big Sky second team honors in2008. She saw action in all 10 tourna-

ments, playing in 24 rounds with a79.6 stroke average, the third-besttotal on the team. The Yuma, Ariz.,native recorded a season-best one-under par 71 en route to finishing tiedfor second at the Lamkin Cup/CalPoly Invitational.

Juniors Megan Buck and LaurenHalstead bring the most experienceback outside of Carter, coming offstrong finishes in 2008. Buck postedan 80.3 stroke average last season, aided by a single-round best of 76 inthe second round of the Big SkyChampionships to post a career-besttie for 18th. Halstead posted a 79.8stroke average, recording her careerand season-best 73 in the final roundof the Big Sky Championships to fin-ish with her best three-round total(232). She tied her then-collegiate

best four times over the first four tour-naments played before resetting hersingle-round mark twice over the finaltwo tournaments.

Bedortha will also benefit fromthree players who will add experienceand challenge for lineup spots.Sophomore Bethany Leclair had asolid season as a true freshman in2007 but was sidelined for all but onetournament in 2008. She had a break-out tournament at the Big SkyChampionships, finishing six-over parto tie for second overall and topsamong freshman in the field.

Junior Meghan Bremer sat our lastseason after transferring from GrandCanyon University. She adds to theexperience level of the team. NAU alsowelcomes transfer Alexa Kim, whojoins the program from Texas State.

"All six players have the ability,"said Bedortha. "It helps knowing youdon't have a weak link because they allknow they have to work hard to getbetter. We have a good mix that hasplayed competitively."

the way for a pair of All-Americans as Elena Robles attainedsecond-team recognition while Casey McKinnon was anhonorable mention selection. Both tied for third place on thefinal individual leaderboard at the 2006 national tournament.

After a two-yearabsence, he mentored the 2003-04 NCAA-II East Regionalchampions in producing an impressive second-place tyingeffort at the 2004 NCAA-II Women's Golf Championships. At
