2 OU vs. OKLAHOMA STATE

HEAD COACH JEFF CAPEL

Jeff Capel was named Oklahoma’s 13th men’s basketball head coach on April

11, 2006. Capel, 33, is 58-28 in his third year at OU and led the Sooners to a 23-12 record and second-round NCAA Tournament appearance last year.

Capel compiled a 79-41 (.658) re-cord over four years as head coach at Virginia Commonwealth prior to arriving in Norman. His VCU squads posted a 50-22 (.694) record in Colonial Athletic Association play and a 47-11 overall home record for a staunch .811 winning percentage.

In 2003-04, VCU’s CAA Tournament championship game victory over George Mason catapulted the Rams to the NCAA Tourna-ment for the fi rst time since 1996. VCU lost in the fi rst round to Wake Forest, but not before putting a major scare into the fourth-seeded Demon Deacons, 79-78. Capel’s 2004-05 squad, which fi nished 19-13, competed in the National Invitation Tournament, marking just the third time in program history that VCU made consecutive postseason appearances.

The Rams won at least 18 games each of Capel’s four seasons in Richmond, with the 2003-04 squad registering a Capel-era-best 23-8 record. His fi rst team fi nished 18-10 in 2002-03. In 2005-06, VCU fi nished 19-10 overall.

In the summer of 2005, Capel served as an assistant coach on the gold-medal-winning USA Men’s World University Games Team that fi nished 8-0 in Turkey in August. Villanova’s Jay Wright was the head coach while Seton Hall’s Bobby Gonzalez served as the other assistant. The squad featured, among others, Midwest City (Okla.) High School and Duke University standout Shelden Williams.

Capel began his coaching career as an assistant at Old Dominion in 2000 before moving to VCU as an assistant for the 2001-02 season. In 2002, he became the youngest NCAA Division I head coach at age 27.

A four-year starter for Hall-of-Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski at Duke from the 1993-94 through 1996-97 campaigns, Capel earned Atlantic Coast Conference honors each of his seasons in Durham. The guard, who wore No. 5, averaged 12.4 points, 3.0 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.7 3-pointers during his career and started in the 1994 national title game against Arkansas.

He ranks 22nd in career scoring at Duke (1,601 points), 16th in minutes played (3,774), sixth in 3-pointers (220), seventh in 3-point attempts (553), seventh in 3-point fi eld goal percentage (.398) and 10th in assists (433).

Capel, who graduated from Duke with a bachelor of arts degree in history, and his wife, Kanika, wed in 2003. They have a daughter, Cameron, who was born in April 2007.

Looking to become the country’s fi rst 20-win team, No. 6/5 Oklahoma (19-1, 5-0) plays at Oklahoma State (13-5, 2-2) on Monday at 8 p.m. CST. The Sooners, who are 4-1 on the road, have won seven straight outings and are coming off a 95-76 home win over Baylor Saturday. Oklahoma State, which is 9-1 at home, won 76-74 in overtime at Nebraska Saturday. Monday’s game, part of the Bedlam Series, will be nationally televised by ESPN/ESPNHD with Ron Franklin, Fran Fraschilla and Holly Rowe announcing. It will air on the Sooner Radio Network (fl agship KOKC AM 1520 in OKC; KMOD FM 97.5 in Tulsa) with Bob Barry, Sr. and Mike Houck calling the action.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES

At 19-1, Oklahoma is off to its best start in 23 years (the 1985-86 team was also 19-1 through 20 games). It is tied for the best start in school history among teams that played at least 19 games (the 1927-28 squad went 18-0 on the season). OU’s 19-1 start ranks as the fourth best with one loss in Big 12 history (the conference began play in 1996-97). Only Kansas has

posted better one-loss starts (34-1 in 1996-97, 23-1 in 2007-08 and 20-1 in 2004-05). Oklahoma owns a 123-89 series lead against Oklahoma State and has won three straight meetings, fi ve of the last six and six of

the last eight. Jeff Capel is 3-1 against the Cowboys as the Sooners’ head coach. Oklahoma has used the same starting lineup in all 20 games. In Big 12 play, those fi ve starters are all averaging double fi gures

in scoring. Blake Griffi n is averaging 22.4 points and is followed by Austin Johnson (12.6), Willie Warren (11.8), Tony Crocker (10.4) and Taylor Griffi n (10.4).

Blake Griffi n and Warren have accounted for 59 percent of OU’s points in its fi ve road games. Griffi n is averaging 22.4 points (shooting .564) and 10.8 rebounds in those contests while Warren is averaging 19.8 points (shooting .583) and 4.2 assists. During their current seven-game winning streak, the Sooners are outshooting their opponents from the fi eld, .498 to .354. Blake Griffi n leads the Big 12 in scoring (22.2 ppg) and rebounding (13.8 rpg), while ranking second in fi eld goal percentage

(.622), fourth in blocks (1.4 bpg) and 11th in steals (1.4 spg). The 6-10 sophomore also averages 2.5 assists per contest, more than any other league player taller than 6-5. He has recorded at least two assists in 16 of 20 games and at least three in 10 outings. Nationally, Blake Griffi n ranks fi rst in rebounding and double-doubles (16), third in free throw attempts (9.7 per game) and 14th

in scoring. He entered last week ranked ninth in fi eld goal percentage. Blake Griffi n’s 20 points and 17 rebounds versus Baylor Saturday gave him his ninth 20-point, 15-rebound game of the year, tying

Tim Duncan (Wake Forest in 1996-97) and Paul Millsap (Louisiana Tech in 2005-06) for the most nationally since 1996-97. Blake Griffi n has accounted for 28 percent of OU’s points, 37 percent of its rebounds and 41 percent of its defensive boards in 16

percent of the team’s minutes played. Brothers Blake and Taylor Griffi n are shooting a combined .587 from the fi eld this year and have teamed to pull down 20.3

rebounds a game (55 percent of the team’s total). In four games against ranked foes, Taylor Griffi n is averaging 15.0 points, 7.0 boards and 2.5 blocks (shooting .697 from the fi eld). During their current seven-game winning streak, the Sooners are outshooting their opponents from the fi eld, .498 to .354.

OFFENSIVE NOTES

The Sooners are shooting .481 from the fi eld. The last time OU shot better for an entire season was 20 years ago (.491 in 1988-89). Over the last 10 games, the Sooners are shooting .398 from 3-point range and averaging 7.6 treys. Over the fi rst 10 games this

season, they shot .311 from behind the arc and averaged 6.4 3-pointers. Tony Crocker and Willie Warren have combined for 48 treys over the last 10 games. Warren is 23-for-46 (.500) from deep in

those 10 outings while Crocker is 25-for-58 (.431). Prior to the stretch, each owned a .273 season 3-point fi gure (12-for-44). Austin Johnson has scored in double fi gures in three of the last four games (14.3 ppg in those four) after doing it three times in

the season’s fi rst 16 contests. OU is 20-1 over the last two seasons when Johnson scores at least 10 points. Blake Griffi n has registered at least three assists in 21 of 53 career games (10 times this year). He has recorded at least two

assists 35 times in his career (16 times this season). Warren is shooting .510 from the fi eld on the season to rank sixth in the Big 12 (second among guards). The last OU guard to

shoot at least .500 from the fi eld for an entire campaign was Nolan Johnson (.559) in 1999-00. Cade Davis made all 23 of his free throw attempts last year as a freshman and canned his fi rst three attempts this year before

fi nally missing against Davidson on Nov. 18. He is now 39-for-45 (.867) in his career. Despite a modest .675 team free throw percentage (they rank ninth in the Big 12), the Sooners have made nine more foul shots

than their opponents have attempted. OU has shot 187 more free throws than its foes, good for an average of 9.4 more per game. Griffi n has attempted 35 percent of the team’s free throws (194 of its 548).

Oklahoma has made at least one 3-pointer in 404 consecutive games (last one without a trey was at Memphis on Dec. 23, 1996).

DEFENSIVE NOTES

Oklahoma leads the Big 12 (all games) with its .376 fi eld goal percentage defense. The last time OU held opponents to a lower collective fi gure for an entire season was 49 years ago (.339 in 1959-60). The Sooners have held their fi rst fi ve Big 12 opponents to a combined .364 fi eld goal mark with only Texas A&M (.420) and

Nebraska (.407) shooting above .400. Kansas State shot a season-low .327 against OU, Texas shot a season-low .338 and Baylor, which entered Saturday’s game with a .495 season mark, shot .346 for its second lowest fi gure of the season. Oklahoma has held nine of its last 13 foes to a fi eld goal mark under .360. Over the last four games, Taylor Griffi n has recorded 11 blocked shots and nine steals. He ranks third in Big 12 play with his 2.2

blocks per game and fi fth with his 2.2 steals. Registering 54 blocked shots over his sophomore and junior seasons combined (the most ever during a two-year period by a Sooner standing under 6-foot-8), the senior has 28 blocks already this year (1.4 per game).

SATURDAY’S BAYLOR RECAP

Oklahoma shot a season-high .583 from the fi eld Saturday in beating Baylor for the 29th straight time, 95-76 in Norman. The Sooners, who used a 27-9 fi rst-half-ending run to lead 58-31 at the break, held the Bears to their second-lowest fi eld goal mark of the season (.346). It was Baylor’s worst defeat in two years. The Sooners’ 95 points marked a Baylor opponent season high. The

Bears entered the game giving up 67.7 points a game. OU shot .667 from the fi eld in the fi rst half to rack up its most points in

a half of a Big 12 game in three years (59 vs. Baylor in 2006). After Baylor scored the game’s fi rst fi ve points, the Sooners outscored

the Bears by 32 the rest of the fi rst half. Blake Griffi n notched his 16th double-double of the year with team

highs of 20 points and 17 rebounds. He was 8-for-10 from the free throw line and added four assists and a steal. Taylor Griffi n scored 18 points (one shy of his season high) on 7-for-9

points on 6-for-9 fi eld goal and 2-for-4 3-point shooting. Tony Crocker canned fi ve of his eight shots (2-for-3 from behind the

arc) and fi nished with 12 points and fi ve rebounds. Austin Johnson scored eight points and handed out seven assists

against just one turnover. He nailed two treys on six attempts. Juan Pattillo, a junior college transfer who was playing in his third

game as a Sooner, totaled nine points, three rebounds, a block and a steal (all in the fi rst half). Pattillo had played a total of four scoreless minutes on the season before his 14 minutes Saturday. He fi nished 4-for-5 from the fi eld and made his lone free throw attempt. The win was OU’s fourth of the year over a ranked opponent (Baylor was ranked No. 23 in the coaches’ poll).

WHO’S HOT

A strong candidate for national-player-of-the-year honors, sophomore forward Blake Griffi n has scored at least 20 points in 14 of 20 games this season and at least 25 on seven occasions. The 6-10, 251-pounder has registered 16 double-doubles (last year he had 10) and has led OU in rebounding 18 times. Griffi n leads the Big 12 in scoring (22.2 ppg) and rebounding (13.8 rpg). Big 12 players who rank second in the respective categories are Iowa State’s Craig Brackins (19.3 ppg) and Kansas’ Cole Aldrich (9.8). Griffi n also ranks second in the Big 12 in fi eld goal percentage (.622), fourth in blocks (1.4) and 11th in steals (1.4).

After averaging 6.6 points and 4.3 assists per game in non-conference play, senior guard Austin Johnson is averaging 12.6 points and 5.6 assists in fi ve league games. He is 10-for-22 from 3-point range, owns a 4.0 assist-to-turnover ratio and has blocked fi ve shots in those fi ve Big 12 outings.

Over the last nine games, freshman Willie Warren is averaging 17.1 points and 3.0 assists. He is shooting .563 from the fi eld and .487 (21-for-43) from behind the arc in those contests. After scoring in double fi gures once in OU’s fi rst seven games, junior guard Tony Crocker has done it in 10 of the last 13. He is

averaging 12.8 points over the 13 outings and is shooting .414 from 3-point range (29-for-70). By comparison, Crocker averaged 6.6 points and shot .250 from 3-point territory over OU’s fi rst seven games this year.

Senior forward Taylor Griffi n is averaging 12.3 points over the last three games after averaging 7.3 over the previous seven.

4 OU vs. OKLAHOMA STATE

PREVIEWING OKLAHOMA STATE

Oklahoma State enters Saturday’s game with a 15-3 overall record and a 2-2 Big 12 mark following Saturday’s 76-74 overtime win at Nebraska. The Cowboys also won at home against Texas A&M (72-61) in league play, while losing at Baylor (98-92 in overtime) and at home to Missouri (97-95).

OSU averages 85.4 points a game to rank second in the conference, shoots .470 from the fi eld (sixth), .415 from behind the 3-point arc (fi rst) and .724 from the free throw line (second). It also leads the league with its 10.3 treys per game.

Sophomore James Anderson leads fi ve OSU guards who average double fi gures in scoring. Anderson averages 17.9 points (ranks fourth in Big 12), 5.7 rebounds and 1.7 as-sists per contest. He is shooting .507 from the fi eld, .441 from 3-point range (45 makes) and .852 from the free throw line.

Junior Obi Muonelo averages 15.6 points and 9.6 rebounds (ranks third in Big 12) per game, while leading the team with his 54 treys (shooting .419 from deep).

Senior Terrel Harris scores 14.3 points a game to go along with 5.1 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.8 steals per contest. He is shooting a team-high .458 from behind the arc (27-for-59).

Senior point Byron Eaton averages 13.6 points and team highs of 5.7 assists (ranks third in Big 12) and 2.5 steals (fi rst). He has attempted a team-high 124 free throws (made 88 for a .710 season mark). He is the only OSU player in history to record 100 assists in each of his four seasons.

Freshman Keiton Page has come off the bench in all 18 games to average 10.2 points in 24.1 minutes a contest. He is shooting .504 from the fi eld and .434 from 3-point range (ranks third on team with 36 treys).

Travis Ford is in his fi rst year as Oklahoma State’s head coach. The 1994 Kentucky graduate, who also played collegiately at Missouri for two seasons, is in his 12th year as a collegiate head coach and owns a 203-169 (.546) career mark.

SERIES WITH OKLAHOMA STATE

Oklahoma holds a 123-89 (.578) series lead against Oklahoma State, but trails 58-41 in games played in Stillwater. Since the inception of the Big 12 Conference (1996-97 was the fi rst season of league competition), OU is 13-12 against the Cowboys (4-8 at Gallagher-Iba Arena.) The Sooners have won three straight meetings in the series, fi ve of the last six and six of the last eight.

LAST YEAR AGAINST THE COWBOYS

The Sooners went 2-0 against Oklahoma State last year, winning 64-61 in Norman and 68-56 in Stillwater. In the fi rst meeting on Jan. 28, OU overcame a 32-27 halftime defi cit and outscored OSU after the break 37-29. The Sooners gave

up just two points over the fi rst six minutes of the second half and opened the stanza on a 13-2 run to lead 40-34. The Cowboys tied the game at 57 with 1:37 remaining before Blake Griffi n’s offensive rebound and three-point play put OU back up for good. Taylor Griffi n, starting in place of Blake due to a knee injury, scored a career-high 20 points on 7-for-8 fi eld goal shooting and grabbed a game-high six rebounds in 28 minutes of action. Blake Griffi n added 15 points and three assists (all to Taylor). Both teams commit-ted 12 turnovers, but OU outscored OSU 17-3 in the points-off-turnovers category. Austin Johnson added 10 points for the Sooners while Obi Muonelo netted a then-career-high 25 points for OSU with the help of fi ve 3-pointers.

The March 5 rematch in Stillwater pitted an OU team that was without leading scorer and rebounder Blake Griffi n (injury to his other knee) against an OSU team that had won fi ve straight games. Thanks to strong shooting and solid defense, the Sooners posted a 12-point win — their largest at Gallagher-Iba Arena since 1990. OU’s .533 (8-for-15) 3-point shooting effort marked its best of the year on the road while OSU’s 56 points tied as its fewest at home on the season. Tony Crocker was 5-for-5 from behind the arc and scored a then-career-high 25 points while Longar Longar fi nished with 12 points (he scored 10 of OU’s fi rst 16). Johnson added 11 for OU while Muonelo fi nished with a team-high 15 for the Cowboys.

Oklahoma shot .488 from the fi eld and .407 from 3-point range in the two victories, while holding OSU to .374 and .317 marks. The Sooners also attempted 60 free throws to the Cowboys’ 38.

2008-09 OKLAHOMA MEN’S BASKETBALL

NOTING OU’S 30-POINT PERFORMANCES

Sophomore Blake Griffi n and freshman Willie Warren have each posted back-to-back 30-point performances this season. Griffi n netted a career-high 35 points against Gardner-Webb Nov. 22 before scoring 32 four days later against UAB. Warren went for 31 at Rice on Dec. 22 before pouring in a career-high 35 on Dec. 30 at Arkansas. Only one other team in the country has had a player combo accomplish the feat this season (Notre Dame’s Luke Harangody and Kyle McAlarney). The last time two Sooners each had back-to-back games of at least 30 points in the

same season was in 1993-94 when senior forward Jeff Webster and junior guard/for-ward Calvin Curry did it. The last OU player to register two 30-point games his true freshman season was Tim

McCalister in 1983-84. The last OU true frosh to register at least three 30-point games was Wayman Tisdale in 1982-83 (he had a freshman-record nine).

MORE BLAKE

Blake Griffi n scored at least 18 points in each of the season’s fi rst nine games, mark-ing OU’s longest such streak since guard Corey Brewer netted at least 18 in 15 consecu-tive outings during the 1997-98 season. Griffi n’s lone three games under 18 points this year were an 11-point performance against Utah Dec. 13 when he played a season-low 23 minutes (attempted only three fi eld goals), a 14-point effort against Coppin State Jan. 3, and a 16-point afternoon Jan. 17 at Texas A&M.

Lost in Griffi n’s gaudy scoring and rebounding statistics are some pretty impressive as-sist numbers. The forward ranks third on the team with 2.5 assists per game this season and has registered at least one handout in all 20 outings. Last season, Griffi n became the fi rst Sooner standing 6-foot-10 or taller to ever dish at least three assists in a game 11 times. He has recorded at least three assists 10 times already this year.

Griffi n (13.8 rpg) is on pace to shatter the school record for rebounding average in a season. The standard of 13.3 boards per game was set by Alvan Adams in 1974-75. Griffi n is also averaging 9.7 free throw attempts a game (ranks third nationally), a fi gure that would break Stacey King’s 1988-89 school record of 8.9 foul shots per outing.

Griffi n has three games of at least 20 rebounds this season. Only one other player in the country (Santa Clara’s John Bryant) also has three.

Griffi n has 53 dunks on the season, good for an average of 2.7 per game. Griffi n owns the best vertical leap (no step) on the team at 37.5 inches, as well as the best max leap (no limit on steps) by reaching

27 inches above the rim. He also owns an 84.5-inch wingspan (seven feet and one-half inch).

UNDERRATED AUSTIN

A Sooner who tends to get lost among OU’s higher-profi le players is senior point guard Austin Johnson. The 6-3, 176-pounder ranks just fi fth on the team with his 8.1 points per outing but ranks among the Big 12’s leaders in several other categories. Johnson leads the league (ranks in the top 10 nationally) in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.4-to-1) and ranks seventh in assists (4.6), and 14th in blocked shots (1.0). Oklahoma State’s James Anderson is the only other league guard who averages as many rejections per game (also 1.0).

The Sooners own a winning record against 10 of the other 11 members of the Big 12 Conference (Kansas is the only league

program with a series lead against OU). OU has played its home games in four different venues: the OU Gymnasium (1907-1919), the R.O.T.C. Armory (1919-1928), the

OU Field House (1928-75) and Lloyd Noble Center (1975-present).

NATIONAL-PLAYER-OF-THE-YEAR CANDIDATE

QUOTABLE

“It’s not even close between Blake Griffi n and everyone else right now to be the No. 1 pick in the June draft and also the National Player of the Year.”

– Jeff Goodman, FoxSports.com (Dec. 8, 2008)

“Good as I’ve seen. He made some shots early in the game and carried them. He’s a big-time player. I’ve never seen a physical specimen like that in college. He’s under control. He’s really, really, really good.”

– Mike Davis, UAB head coach

“Blake is very talented, but it is his team-fi rst, blue-collar attitude that truly sets him apart. The kid is just a winner. If you locked all of the college players in the country in a room and only one could battle his way out, it would be Blake Griffi n coming out of that room.”

– Jay Bilas, ESPN

“Note to Sooners: If Blake Griffi n is open by a fraction of an inch for a fraction of a second, get him the ball. Rinse and repeat. He will score, get fouled, fi nd an open man, solve the economic crisis, help a grandmother cross a street. Something good will happen.”

– Dana O’Neil, ESPN.com

2008-09 BLAKE GRIFFIN NOTES

Unanimous choice as Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year.

Named Big 12 Player of the Week four times, including each of the season’s fi rst three weeks. Only one other player in history (Texas Tech’s Andre Emmett in 2003-04) has won the honor three straight times.

Ranks fi rst nationally with his 13.8 rebounds a game and 14th with his 22.2 points a contest.

Averages 2.5 assists (ranks third on team), 1.4 blocks and 1.4 steals while shooting .622 from the fi eld.

No Big 12 player taller than 6-5 averages more assists than Griffi n’s 2.5 per game.

On pace to shatter OU’s single-season record for rebounding average (record of 13.3 per game was set by Alvan Adams in 1974-75) and could break fi eld goal percentage mark (.627 by Al Beal in 1978-79).

Has scored at least 20 points in 14 of 20 games (fi nished with 18 twice and 19 once). Became fi rst Sooner to score at least 18 points in nine consecutive games since 1997-98 (guard Corey Brewer).

Has pulled down 21 rebounds three times (versus Davidson, Gardner-Webb and Purdue).

First Big 12 player to ever record back-to-back games of at least 20 points and 20 rebounds (25 points and 21 rebounds Nov. 18 vs. Davidson; 35 points and 21 boards Nov. 22 vs. Gardner-Webb).

Has nine 20-point, 15-rebound games to tie for most in a season nationally since 1996-97 (Wake Forest’s Tim Duncan in 1996-97 and Louisiana Tech’s Paul Millsap in 2005-06).

First Sooner to ever grab at least 18 rebounds in four straight games (18, 19, 21 and 21). No player had ever done it in more than two consecutive outings. Has six games of at least 18 boards on the year.

Third Sooner to register six straight double-doubles (Alvan Adams, Garfi eld Heard). He has done it twice.

Has accounted for 28 percent of Oklahoma’s points on the year, 37 percent of its rebounds, 41 percent of its defensive boards and 35 percent of its free throw attempts (has played 16 percent of OU’s minutes).

Is already 92 percent of the way to his rebound total as a freshman (276 this year; 301 last year).

Averaging 9.7 free throw attempts per game to rank third in the nation (Stacey King set OU’s current single-season record of 8.9 attempts per contest in 1988-89).

Needs 73 points to join Wayman Tisdale, Alvan Adams and Jeff Webster as the only Sooners to reach 1,000 during their sophomore season (would take him four more games at his current pace of 22.2 ppg).

Boasts eight of OU’s 12 highest scoring games and its 17 highest rebounding games.

Had a career-high six steals versus Mississippi Valley State and a career-high four blocks twice.

Has registered at least three assists in 21 of 53 career games (10 times this year) and has at least two assists in 35 career contests (16 times this season).
