uilt in the heart of Minnesota, it was inevitable that

Shattuck-St. Mary’s School would enjoy a long history of

hockey on its campus. The first recorded official hockey team

at Shattuck School banded together in 1925 to skate on a small

pond in the area where Clapp Dormitory now stands. Over the

years, hockey remained a tenacious presence at Shattuck School,

and in 1968 the campus’ first indoor ice rink was built–a lofty

arched construction now affectionately referred to as “The

Barn.” Throughout the late 1980s, the SSM hockey program

saw hard times as school enrollment dropped and players were

harder to come by. For a few years, SSM partnered in a co-op

program with Faribault High School in order to get a full team

on the ice and in 1989 had only two players on the roster.

Then, in 1990, the school embarked on a visionary plan to bring

hockey back to SSM–stronger than ever. In the first year of

SSM’s new phase of hockey, players were recruited from all

over the country to join in the building of a new program.

In its second year, the fledgling program had already garnered

enough attention to add a second team. By 1993, SSM had

outgrown the local high school hockey league and expanded

its season to include a full schedule of USA Hockey games

and tournaments. In 1996, the School fielded its first girls

hockey team, and the top boys midget team skated to its very

first National Championship tournament. Three short

years later, in 1999, the Boys Prep team, led by Andy

Murray, former Head Coach of the Los Angeles Kings,

kicked off what would become a tradition of excellence

by winning its first Tier I Boys U18 National Championship

title. The Boys Prep team has since won four more

National Championships–in 2001, 2003, 2005, and 2007.

Also in 2005, 2006 and 2007, the Girls Prep team capped

its seasons as three-peat Tier I Women’s U19 National

Champions.

hese days, the SSM hockey program is made up of eight

teams playing a seven-month schedule of 50-70 games per

season. The two girls teams, two bantam teams and four

midget teams practice daily on two campus ice rinks, and

compete in games and tournaments around the United States

and Canada. Under the leadership of Director of Hockey Tom

Ward and Director of Prospect Evaluation J.P. Parisé, supported

by an incredible staff of coaches, trainers, and teachers, the

SSM hockey program has grown into the premier program

in the United States. As Sports Illustrated magazine put it,

“Shattuck-St. Mary’s School is to high school hockey what

Harvard is to law school.”

For the sixth time, Shattuck-St. Mary’s School BoysPrep team was the best in the nation at the end ofthe 2007-08 season. The USA Hockey 18 andUnder Tier I boys national championship cappedoff a 47-12-3 season for SSM.

“Every championship is special but this is the firsttime here that I’ve coached back-to-back champi-onships,”said Coach Tom Ward.“It’s great that thisgroup, most of this group, was able to win it again. We didn’t have any particular player who carriedthe day. It was a true team effort and everyonecontributed.”

In the tournament, Derek Stepan ’08 scored sixgoals and had seven assists. Eli Zuck ’08 had threegoals and five assists, and Jordan Murray ’08scored two goals (both in the championship) andhad six assists.

Playing what Coach Ward called “one of our bestgames of the year,”SSM defeated Team Illinois, 5-1,at the Amherst Pepsi Center in Amherst, N.Y., torepeat as the 18U Tier I champions.

“I had a good feeling before the game that the kidswere going to play well,”said Coach Ward.“I couldjust see throughout the day that they were in agood rhythm. They weren’t nervous or anxious, justvery focused.”

Team Illinois had won 13 straight playoff games toget to the final. But SSM, which lost a game inpool play, dominated the championship game, taking 39 shots while Geoff Sadjadi ’08 made 17saves. SSM broke a 1-1 tie with 19.6 seconds leftin the first period and didn’t trail again.

Despite losing a number of key seniors, Coach Wardsees a bright future for Shattuck-St. Mary’s hockey.

“Moving into the season, we are looking to fill a number of spots on the Boys Prep team andthroughout the program,”said Coach Ward.“Ourprogram is healthy, with capable players movingup throughout the program. I look forward towatching the players’ progress.”

College hockey rosters are full of Shattuck-St. Mary’sSchool alumni. After college, some play professional-ly—and you know who they are—but there are otherways to stay in the game. This year, Ben Barr ’00,Nick Petraglia ’00 and Meredith Roth ’00 are allassistant coaches for NCAA Division I programs.

Barr graduated fromRensselaer PolytechnicInstitute in 2004 and was avolunteer assistant coachthere for two years beforejoining the Union Collegestaff. At RPI, Barr produced64 points (25 goals and 39assists) in 140 career gamesand was the team’s mostvaluable player in 2002-03.

He also was named to the Dean’s List all four yearsand was on the 2004 President’s List.

Petraglia received hisbachelor’s degree in sportorganization from Miami(Ohio) in 2004, and hismaster’s degree in sportbehavior and managementin 2007. He was a volunteerassistant for three yearsbefore being named thedirector of hockey opera-tions this season. He is the

team’s video coordinator and is responsible forscouting reports and administrative support.

A RedHawk goaltender for four years, Petraglia posteda career save percentage of .902 and a goals-againstaverage of 2.21. He was named the team’s MostImproved Player after the 2001-02 season. A memberof the 2003-04 team that made the NCAA tourna-ment field, he posted career bests of a 1.94 GAA and.920 save percentage.

Petraglia’s SSM experience remains a fondmemory and a source of inspiration, he says.

OFF ICE BUT STILL IN THE GAME- by Julie Jensen

“I am so proud of some of the things our teams wereable to accomplish,”he said.“Winning the school’s firstnational and first Mac championships was pretty special, but more than anything it was being able to grow up andshare the experience with a group of guys that will belifelong friends. There is no question that the program isin great hands today with Coach [Tom] Ward. The currentplayers have such a great opportunity to develop not onlyas players, but as people, and I would encourage eachSSM player to take full advantage of the opportunitybecause the time goes by so fast.”

Roth is starting her third season asan assistant coach at Providence, which has finished second in theHockey East tournament for thelast two years. She handlesrecruiting, on-ice instruction andteam travel arrangements. Rothwas the head coach of SSM’s girlsunder-16 team for the 2005 and2006 seasons.

Roth received her bachelor’s degree in social sciencesfrom Providence in 2004. She played hockey for theFriars for four years, earning spots on the Hockey EastAll-Academic team (2004), the U.S. women’s nationalteam (2003), the U.S. Under-22 national team (2003),and the ECAC Eastern Hockey League All-Tournamentteam (2002).

She credits her SSM experience with helping her findexamples of caring, responsible behavior.“SSM issuch a special and unique place because I found influ-ence in most people I encountered,”she said.“FatherDoyle and his unconditional caring for the students, alumni, faculty and staff is truly impressive. He is such agenerous man with his heart and his time. I’ve learneda lot just by being around him.”

Being a head coach is the aspiration of all three, despite the challenges they have discovered whilemoving from player to coach.

“At first it surprised me at how much work goes intocoaching and how much time you spend thinking

Page 11: 2008-09 Hockey Program

9

about and analyzing the smallest of details,”saidPetraglia.“As a player, you don’t really see how muchis done behind the scenes.”

“Being patient” is the toughest, Roth said.“Patientwith myself in the learning process and allowing myselfto grow, and also patient with others’ learning andgrowing processes,”she said.“The one thing that sur-prised me the most is just how many hats you wearas a coach. It is not just Xs and Os all the time. Ifanything, that is a small fraction of my role as a coach.”

The three also said the coaching they received as Sabreskaters serves as a model for their coaching.

“All [good coaches] have something that makes themgood,”said Barr.“I try to take a little bit of every goodcoach I’ve ever had. I’d like to be as prepared asCoach [Andy] Murray. I don’t know if that’s possiblebut I aspire to that. I hope I relate to players as wellas Coach Ward, Coach [John] Sumner and CoachMurray do.

“Coach Ward, J.P. [Parise], Coach Murray, CoachSumner—they all played a huge role in our lives anddevelopment, and all of us who went to Shattuck-St. Mary’s are lucky to have learned from them.”

Thank you to all our generous donors!

Welcome to the 2008-09 Shattuck-St. Mary’s Hockey Season!

The 2008-09 hockey season is shaping up to be one of our most competitive seasons for all of our teams

here at Shattuck-St. Mary’s School. The student-athletes who are in our program this year are as strong as

we have ever had. We are all looking forward to following their progress throughout the season.

The Boys Prep team won its second consecutive national championship last season for the first time in the

program’s history. All of the teams that went to national tournaments had very strong showings at their

respective tournaments.

The season proved to be one of the strongest in the history of the program. Overall, all of our teams moved

along very nicely throughout the year and the coaching staff was pleased with the level of play and progress

of each individual and team.

All of us involved with Shattuck-St. Mary’s hockey are excited about great things happening in our School

and hockey program. We want to wish all of the teams and coaching staff the best of luck this year!

Shattuck-St. Mary’s Successes

32

David Carle ’08In the last hockey game David Carle ’08 will ever play,he scored a goal and his Shattuck-St. Mary’s teamwon the 2008 USA Hockey 18 and Under Tier I boysnational championship. Two months after the champi-onship, Mayo Clinic doctors told Carle that he hashypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a thickening of theheart. The condition puts him at risk of sudden deathduring physical activity, and it means Carle’s hockeycareer is over.

Except that it’s not.

Denver University, which had offered Carle a hockeyscholarship, honored that commitment and made hima student assistant coach.

“The transition is going really well,”said Carle.“I’vegotten a lot of support from family and friends, andpeople here have been pretty sensitive to my new role,so that helps. The toughest part for me was thatthroughout my career there were a lot of people whodoubted me and what I could do, and proving themwrong was a driving force for me. Losing that, and notbeing able to prove them wrong, has been really hard.

“I’m in a pretty unique position because not manypeople get to be part of a top D-I coaching team andalso one of the guys,”said Carle.“I’m hoping to learnmore about the game while getting to know a greatbunch of guys. Coaching is definitely something thatmay be an opportunity for me at some point but nowI just need to figure out what’s my passion.”

He had that figured out, before the diagnosis. Growingup with two brothers in a houseful of hockey inAlaska, Carle was projected as a third-round pick inthe National Hockey League draft. After he advisedthe teams of his medical condition before draft day,Tampa Bay drafted him with the No. 203 overall pick.(Tampa Bay subsequently acquired David’s olderbrother, Matt, in a deal that sent All-Star defensemanDan Boyle to San Jose.)

The diagnosis blew apart Carle’splans, but not his world.

“When he first heard about [thecondition], he didn’t know whatthe outcome would be, he didn’tknow hockey was going to bedone,”said his mother, KarenCarle.“Once it did happen, hethought he was prepared but hewasn’t. He was very strong andtook it amazingly well. Hesurprised us at how strong heis in dealing with it all. Thatshouldn’t surprise me, becausehe’s always been mature for hisage, but he did surprise me.”

In addition to assisting the DUcoaching staff, Carle will writefor the university’s website. He will be writing about more than power plays and penalties.

“How can I make other people more aware of this disease and therisk factors,”said Carle.“I’m looking forward to speaking about that.If I can help just one or two people, make them aware, whichwould maybe save their lives, or educate people about it so theyknow they don’t have it.”

And he will be monitoring his old team.

“I developed some really close relationships at SSM and I keep incontact with those people,”said Carle.“And I will definitely keep tabson the prep team this year and see if they can get the three-peat done.I’ll be cheering them on.”
