Head Coach Kelley Hartley Hutton

Kelley Hartley Hutton was named women’svolleyball head coach at IPFW in July 1999,where she has been charged with carrying thetorch for a university with a rich volleyballhistory. Since that appointment, the Mastodonsare 172–83 (67 percent) and coming off a red-hot 26–10 overall record to mark their fourth-straight 20-plus win season.

Hartley Hutton guided IPFW to the 2006Independent Championship Title and was namedIndependent Coach of the Year for the third time infive years. With a 309–150 career record (67percent), a home crowd joined Hartley Hutton incelebrating her 300th career victory when the Dons swept Buffalo onOct. 14, 2006. Hartley Hutton is currently ranked 43rd in the nation inwinning percentage as an active coach.

Known for playing gutsy defense, IPFW ended the ’06 campaignranked 19th in the country in digs per game (19.08 digs/game) withthen-junior Peachy Jankowski ranked 24th individually. The Dons 88

RPI ranking wasgood for third-best of10 NCAA Division Ivolleyball teams inIndiana, behind NotreDame and Purdue.

The women’svolleyball team“won” in theclassroom a yearago, too. HartleyHutton’s team turnedin a combined 3.28grade-point average

last year while juggling a hectic travel schedule. In 2006, HartleyHutton coached her first-ever Academic All-American in middleblocker Claire Jackson, who graduated with a perfect 4.0 in biologyand is now enrolled in Indiana University’s School of Dentistry.

Directing IPFW through the Dons’ final two years of Division II play,Hartley Hutton then led the Dons through a transition to the seriousDivision I volleyball force it is now. She led IPFW to a 2000 regular-season championship its last year competing in the Great LakesValley Conference and compiled an overall record of 23–7 thatseason. In 2001, the Dons first year of Division I play, they posted a13–14 mark followed by a 16–18 season in 2002—just shy of the.500 mark again. But in 2003, the Dons rolled to a 22–10 record andhave not won fewer than 22 matches since.

For the educational and cultural experience of her student-athletes’ lifetimes, Hartley Hutton took the squad to Brazil in May2003 for competitions, tourist excursions, and team bonding. It alsomeant “going home” for graduate assistant coach Fabiana Souza

(a native of Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and playing infront of her family in an IPFW jersey. Souzashattered IPFW career records for kills, setting it at2,305. The previous record stood at 1,895. Sherepeated as Independent Offensive Player of theYear in 2005. She was 16th in the nation in killsper game (4.94 kpg).

Off the court, Big Brothers/Big Sisters is HartleyHutton’s favorite non-profit organization, and shehas made time to mentor an area “little” since2002, a relationship she cherishes. IPFWwomen’s volleyball matches are standard fallevents for the organization’s First Friends

Program. After those matches, Hartley Hutton and her team usethis as an opportunity to talk to area youth about the importanceof education and setting goals.

Hartley Hutton came to IPFW in 1999 after serving one year at RobertMorris University rebuilding that program. In just one year, herrecruiting class led the Colonials to a Northeast Conferencechampionship and an NCAA Tournament berth in 1999, redeeming aseventh place league finish the year before. Hartley Hutton began hercoaching career at Walsh University in North Canton, Ohio, for fourseasons (1994–97), leading the team to back-to-back Mid-OhioConference titles and the NAIA tournament (1996 and 1997). AtWalsh, she compiled a record of 131–44; earned MOC Coach-of-the-Year, twice; and was the league’s chairperson and regionalrepresentative. She also served as the assistant athletic director andsenior woman administrator at Walsh.

A 1991 graduate from the University of Toledo, Hartley Hutton playedfour years for the Rockets, serving as captain her junior and senioryears. She earned an M.S. in sports administration from BowlingGreen State University in 1993 while working at the Mid-AmericanConference office. After completing a one-year NCAA internship withthe MAC, she was appointed to a full-time position in 1992.

Kelley and her husband, Craig Hutton, were married in Feb. 2004after meeting at IPFW. They reside in Fort Wayne, and their daughter,Kennedy, was born last April.

2007 IPFW WOMEN’s VOLLEYBALL 18

A Look Ahead...Expectations will be very high on Aug. 24, as it marks the start ofthe 2007 IPFW women’s volleyball season. In the team’s first yearcompeting in the Summit League, the Mastodons have their sightsset on a championship and an NCAA tournament berth.

“We recognize that our goal of winning a championship in our firstyear in the league is a lofty one, but it is one that we are excitedabout and ready to earn,” said ninth year Head Coach HartleyHutton. “This team should have a very clear blueprint for how theyneed to work and prepare for Summit League competition. We arefortunate that we played many of these teams as an Independentand have a healthy rivalry with them already.”

IPFW won the 2006 Independent Championship, its third title in fivetries, defeating now-league opponent North Dakota State to reachthe finals. The Mastodons have also faced IUPUI, Western Illinois,Oral Roberts, Cententary, Oakland, North Dakota State, and SouthDakota State. Since the transition to Division I, the Mastodons havecompiled a 22–6 record against the Summit League. AgainstIUPUI—the Dons instate rival—they are even at 3–3. Oral Roberts isthe only institution with an upper hand against IPFW, defeatingthem last year at the UVSC/LaQuinta Invitational. Against fellow newmembers North Dakota State and South Dakota State, the Dons are5–1 and 3–1, respectively. IPFW holds an 8–0 record againstOakland, 2–0 record against Western Illinois, and are 1–0 againstCentenary College.

The senior class of Peachy Jankowski (libero), Cynara Martins(outside hitter), and Patricia Azevedo (outside hitter) has helped theMastodons become a volleyball force in the Midwest. They do notknow a season with fewer than 22 wins since the Mastodons havewon at least 20 matches four years straight, including a 26–10mark last season.

Despite losing three seniors—all starters in some capacity (middleblocker Claire Jackson, outside hitter Nicole Howell, and outside hitterAmanda Pfister)—Hartley calls her 2007 teamexperienced. “We return our starting setter, libero, a middle, an outside, and our opposite. I’dsay that is a seasoned group,” said HartleyHutton. “It will be exciting to see the newcomerscontribute, too, and I believe they will.”

SettingJessica Dominiak (Waterville, Ohio/St. UrsulaAcademy) won the starting job for most of the2006 season, but she had to use the springseason for surgery and then rehabilitation. Withthe most experience and leadership know-how—as well as a point-scoring, left-handedattack—Dominiak looks to be the likely floorcaptain for the Dons again. Dominiak was183rd in the nation last season in assists pergame with 10.21. Dominiak hit at a .271 clipand averaged 1.10 kills/game. She was namedto the Independent All-Academic Team.

Shannon Reuter (Tiffin, Ohio/Tiffin Columbian), another giftedathlete, received the starting nod for a segment of last season, too.Reuter saw action in 30 matches, averaging 5.62 assists/game and1.38 digs/game. Despite her size, Reuter’s a leaper and goodtechnical blocker on the right side. Her athletic ability makes her anautomatic contender.

“We are really fortunate to have two quality setters in Jess andShannon. I hesitate to call either a ‘back-up’ at this point. And theirstrengths, as well as short-comings, are so different that they offersomething completely unique to our team,” said Hartley Hutton.

Outside HittersThe outside hitting position is wide open. Likely starters are thesenior Brazilian tandom of Cynara Martins (Belo Horizonte,Brazil/Centro Educational Miniero) and Patricia Azevedo (BeloHorizonte, Brazil/Western Nebraska C.C.). Martins led the Dons in

kills, kills/game, points, and double-doubles.Martins had 18 double-doubles in 36 matches, averaging 3.23 kills/game and 3.50 digs/game.Azevedo averaged 1.43 kills/game in her firstseason at IPFW. Martins, a fierce competitor, wasnamed All-Tournament Team at the DuquesneOmni William Penn Tournament and TheIndependent Championship, MVP of the IPFWInvitational, and Second-Team All-Independentlast year.

“Though Cynara is still not playing at 100 percent, she can help us with her back court play andcompetitive spirit. She has been a mainstay in ourline-up since her freshman campaign, and I amcertain she will look for a way to be a value to ourline-up,” said Hartley Hutton.

Ironically, both Martins and Azevedo arerecovering from injuries and might not reach the

peak of their game until later in the fall. Newcomers StephanieLamberti (Clinton Township, Mich./L’Anse Creuse) and MayaraSchlindwein (Nova Petropolis, Brazil/Colegio Cenecista FredericoMichaelsen) could see early action. Lamberti is crafty and alreadyunderstands that there is more than one way to score on theoutside, while Schlindwein offers more size and an internationalstyle of play.

“We will have to lean on Stephanie and Mayara early,” said HartleyHutton. “They won’t be afforded a leisurely time to adjust to ourstyle because we need them to perform at a high level immediately. As newcomers, this is a great opportunity for both of them.”

Middle HittersA lightning jump serve and a punishing quick attack earned now-sophomore Rebekah Roehm (Willshire, Ohio/Parkway) a startingposition early during her freshman year. Not coincidently, the Donsfinished the second half of 2006, losing just two of 18 matchesafter an 8–8 start. And the accolades piled on: IndependentNewcomer of the Week: Sept. 5, Sept. 26, and Oct. 31; All-Tournament Team at IPFW Invitational; MVP of the IndependentChampionships; and Honorable Mention All-Independent Team.Roehm also ranked nationally in aces per game (273rd, 0.35aces/game) and hitting percentage (264th, .279).

“Bekah gets better and better and offers consistency to our middleattack. She is aggressive and very competitive, so she’s a natural‘go-to’ type,” said Hartley Hutton.

Junior Kylee Hervey (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) trained in the middleposition all spring, and Hartley Hutton thinks she will contend forthe remaining middle blocker position. “Kylee is quick and workedhard to learn the position last spring. I hope this is a break-out yearfor her,” said Hartley Hutton.

Look for freshmen Taryn Parker (Alto, Mich./Caledonia) and JordanStaus (Peru, Ill./LaSalle-Peru) to see action in the middle, too.Parker comes from one of the best clubs in Michigan (Far Out) andbrings a combination of size, speed, and sound, technical training.Staus, a good leaper with a great attitude, is expected to add depthto the middle and possibly train at the pin positions, too.

OppositeJunior Jessica Miller’s (Fort Wayne, Ind./Concordia) imposing blockand versatility to attack a variety of play sets makes her the choiceon the right side. Miller averaged 2.56 kills/game last season. Sheearned All-Tournament Team at the Michigan/Nike Invitational andthe Utah Valley State/LaQuinta Invitational.

“Jess is no doubt one of the most consistent and hardest workerson the team. And although she has a quiet demeanor, she wants torip somebody’s head off. Gotta love that,” said Hartley Hutton.

DefenseFans can count on the Mastodons to play their trademark soliddefense and display patient and sound ball control. IPFW ranked19th in the nation in digs per game last year, averaging 19.08 digsper game. The efforts were led by starting libero Peachy Jankowski(Fraser, Mich./Fraser), who ranked 24th individually with 5.62 digsper game. Jankowski set a match record of 34 digs vs. North

Dakota State on Oct. 7, 2006, and the season record for digs with742. She was also named All-Tournament Team at theMichigan/Nike Invitational and at the IPFW Invitational, IndependentDefensive Player of the Year, and First Team All-Independent. Thecoaching staff thinks Jankowski is a Defensive Player of the Yearcandidate in the Summit League as well.

“Peachy has improved her game every year for us. She has beendrilled, and drilled, and drilled and looks at practice as anopportunity to improve. We can’t ask for much more from her,” saidHartley Hutton.

Junior Christine Simon (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green) andsophomore Jamie Schwartz (Decatur, Ind./Adams Central) will serveas defensive specialists. Schwartz saw valuable court time as afreshman and continued to improve in the spring season.

The Mastodons will look to capitalize on their experience to propelthemselves to their first NCAA tournament berth at the Division Ilevel. The Dons will travel to the Dayton Flyer Classic and theClarion Classic hosted by Western Michigan before hosting the 8thIPFW Invitational on Sept. 7 and 8. IPFW will open the homeschedule with Eastern Michigan on Aug. 28 and the conferencehome schedule with North Dakota State on Sept. 22.

IPFW hosts the Summit League Championships on Nov. 16 and 17at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center. The top four teams willconverge on the IPFW campus for the championships and theautomatic NCAA berth.
