Despite the graduation of two strong seniors in Laura Hewston and Amanda Rawl last year, the Bull-dog Cross Country team is primed to field a success-ful, albeit young, team in 2007. The team will be led by a pair of (academic) juniors that were sidelined by injury last year. Megan Jenkins sat out last year’s cross country season due to a foot injury while Sarah Strickland suffered a stress fracture before the start of track season last spring. Jenkins and Strickland will be joined by fellow junior Erin Ritter who has been able to stay healthy and should be able to play a key role in the team’s

success this year. A con-sistently healthy trio of Jenkins, Strickland and Ritter can prove to be a talented group of runners if they can re-main healthy. All three posted impressive times as freshmen and should be competitive in 2007. Another group of talented runners who posted an impressive freshman season is this year’s sophomore class. Katheryn Gate-wood was the team’s top runner for most of last season and posted the fastest cross coun-try 5k time in school history in her first meet of the year. Natalie Wolin had an amaz-ing freshman year and improved with each passing week, run-ning the sixth-fastest

cross country 5k time in school history. Wolin ended up breaking Sharon Hacker’s indoor 3k and 5k school re-cords during track season and set new freshman marks in the outdoor 3k and 5k. Added to that is sophomore Heather Harris and newcomers Suzanne Gay and Sarah Stierwalt. Har-ris improved every week throughout track season and should help push the freshmen to do well this fall. Like in 2006, the Southern Conference Cham-pionships – held in Cullowhee, N.C. this year – will be challenging due to the hilly nature of the course. Despite last year’s SoCon Championships being held in Chattanooga, Tenn., the women’s team posted a program-best eighth place.

With the graduation of the top three runners from the past two years (Matt Holmes, Charles Kutz and Will Wilson), the 2007 season will surely be a rebuilding year. However, a lot of talent still remains on a young team that is led by sophomores Brendan Kight and Daniel Knight. That duo will anchor the 2007 squad and they will be aided by seniors Ste-ven Craig and Rob Isaac. With five other returnees and 11 newcomers, this year’s top five is up for grabs. Kight and Knight both had excellent freshman years. Rarely is a freshman able to run in the top five but to have two achieve such a feat last year was a pleasant surprise for the team. That success carried into the track season where Kight broke the 3k freshman school outdoor record, run-ning 9:06.98. Many questions follow the newcomers but there is considerable talent joining the ranks of the Corps this fall. Freshman Chris Fallis is a well-recognized local runner with tremendous skill in the longer distances. His transi-tion to the college distance race should be smooth as he enjoys running the 8k and 10k. Fallis has lots of experi-ence running half-marathons and full marathons. Freshman Zach Yereb hails from Ohio, a state loaded with talented dis-tance runners. Yereb brings a sub-10:00 two mile time – a mark that would have him challenge for the South Caro-lina high school state title. Accustomed to hills, Yereb is looking forward to running flat courses and his experience in the hilly terrain will be invaluable later in the season, especially for the Southern Conference Championships. Freshman AJ Russell is another northerner who is used to hills and should make an impact this year in cross country and track. Alex Anderson is a transfer from Florida International University that brings experience in the collegiate distance and is someone that has already made a transition to the college level. Anderson was a solid high school runner and is looking to be a better fit in a program like The Citadel’s. Joseph Tkach is an 800m runner that hopes to find his spot in the top seven and will use cross country as a springboard for training for track season. Sophomore Bryan Lailson has the opportunity to make an impact this season if he can stay healthy. Lailson was primed to be a top runner last year before a late-season injury set him back. The schedule is as competitive as years past with The Citadel Invitational and the Walt Disney World Classic high-lighting the 2007 slate. For the second consecutive year, a hilly course is set for the SoCon Championships and the team will have to rely on past high school experience with that type of course.

Junior Sarah Strickland has recovered from a stress fracture that side-lined her 2007 track sea-son and is primed to lead a young bulldog squad on the course this year.

A young men’s cross coun-try team will rely on se-nior rob isaac’s leadership in 2007.

The Citadel is a state-supported comprehen-sive military college with the mission of edu-cating principled leaders through its Corps of Cadets. Males and females are admitted to the undergraduate residential Corps of Ca-dets. In addition to the day program, under-graduate and graduate programs are offered through the College of Graduate Studies (CGPS) in the evening.

The South Carolina Commission on Higher Education recognizes The Citadel as the only specialized four-year college in the state. The Citadel, founded in 1842, is a co-educational military college with a rich and storied his-tory. Located in Charleston, S.C., the insti-tution offers a classic military education for young men and women who seek a college experience that is intense, meaningful and academically strong. Since its founding in 1842, The Citadel’s emphasis on character, as well as intellect, has produced generations of graduates who have served their nation, their professions and their communities with dis-tinction.

Corps of Cadets ...All students at The Citadel are cadets in the South Carolina Corps of Cadets, which numbers approximately 1,900 and repre-sent nearly every state, as well as more than 20 countries. While roughly 40 percent of the graduates each year go into the armed services, all cadets participate in an ROTC program. On most days, cadets have physi-cal fitness training and military instruction in addition to their regular college classes. Weekdays end with a formation and required evening study period.

Leader in Female Athletics...The Citadel is a national leader in the percent-age of female students who are athletes. More than 50 percent of its female cadets com-pete on seven varsity teams - an outstanding achievement given the fact that female athlet-ics started in 1997.

Because The Citadel emphasizes corps unity, cadets cannot be married and all must live on campus in the barracks with their assigned company. The disciplined lifestyle that begins in the knob year binds cadets into a lifelong, close-knit camaraderie that is one of the strongest forces in their lives after graduation.

earned the institution the citation of Best College Value in the South in 1999. With an average of 75 per-cent of its students returning each year, The Citadel enjoys one of the best retention records in the country. The Citadel’s 14 academic departments offer five bachelor’s degrees in 17 areas, six master’s degrees in 17 areas, and specialist degrees in two areas.

College of Graduate & Professional Studies...The Citadel’s evening college serves the Lowcountry by offering national-ly accredited bachelor’s, master’s and specialist degrees scheduled around the student’s profession, family and lifestyle. It is the well-known Citadel academic excellence in a civilian envi-ronment. The CGPS offers 20 gradu-ate programs with concentrations in education, psychology, computer science and business. The Master of Business Administration program is the only nationally accredited MBA program in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina. The CGPS also offers three undergraduate evening programs in business and engineer-ing. The Citadel is the only college in South Carolina that offers an undergraduate civil and electrical engineering degree in the evening.

Alumni...Generations of Citadel graduates have served their nation, their state and their community with distinction. The Citadel gradu-ates men and women with alert minds and sound bodies, who value honor, integrity, loyalty and patriotism, and who accept the responsibilities that accompany leadership.
