FACTS 2007-2008South Dakota School of Mines and Technology has a proud heritage of excellence in preparing graduates to serve as

leaders in the professions of engineering and science. The university provides graduate and undergraduate degrees inscience, engineering, and interdisciplinary sciences.

There are 16 academic departments organized into two colleges: the College of Engineering, and the College ofScience and Letters. A total of 32 degree programs in engineering and science are offered at the baccalaureate, mas-ters, and doctoral levels.

RAPID CITY AND THE BLACK HILLSSouth Dakota School of Mines and Technology is located in Rapid City, the state’s second-largest city. The city of65,000 is the regional center for health care, shopping, banking, and other services, and is a major tourist destina-tion because of its proximity to the Black Hills, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Badlands, and otherattractions. FY 07 RESEARCH FUNDINGSchool of Mines faculty members and researchers received 72 research awards totaling more than $17.1 million dur-ing the 2007 fiscal year. HARDROCKER FOOTBALLDR. CHARLES RUCH — PRESIDENT OF SDSM&T

Dr. Charles P. Ruch became the 17th President of the SouthDakota School of Mines and Technology on July 1, 2003.

Ruch holds master’s and doctorate degrees in education fromNorthwestern University and a bachelor’s degree in chemistryfrom The College of Wooster (Ohio). Before joining SouthDakota Tech, Dr. Ruch served as President at Boise StateUniversity for 10 years. Previously, Dr. Ruch spent 19 years atVirginia Commonwealth University, first as an associate deanand dean, and as provost and vice president. His first univer-sity assignment came at the University of Pittsburgh, wherehe was a faculty member and department chair.

An active participant in higher education organizations, Dr.Ruch has chaired the Urban and Metropolitan UniversitiesCommittee for the American Association of State Collegesand Universities. He also has served on the presidents’ coun-cils of the Big Sky, Big West, and Western Athletic confer-ences, and as chair of the Western Interstate Commission forHigher Education.

Dr. Ruch’s professional activities also include participation inthe American Council on Education, the AmericanAssociation of Colleges of Teacher Education, the NationalAssociation of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges,and the National Council on Accreditation for TeacherEducation. Dr. Ruch has written and edited numerous articles, book reviews, and book chapters, and has deliveredCongressional testimony.

In every community he has joined, Dr. Ruch has been active in organizations and efforts to make those communi-ties better places to live. He has continued that effort in Rapid City, especially when it comes to economic develop-ment. In that critical area, he has prioritized using campus expertise to build an even brighter regional economicfuture. Since joining the School of Mines, Dr. Ruch also has opened lines of communication with the communitythrough a bi-weekly e-letter, begun a strategic planning process, and created numerous partnerships to improve theuniversity, the community, the state, and the region.

Dr. Ruch credits his success to the ongoing support from his wife, Sally, their four grown children, and three grand-children.

HARDROCKER FOOTBALLCOACHING STAFF

Dan Kratzer will enter his third season as the Hardrocker head coach this fall. Hewas selected as head coach after five seasons as receivers coach and assistant headcoach at Kent State University in Ohio.

Kratzer spent six seasons as head coach at Lindenwood University in Missouri from1995-2000, where he guided the team to its first ever NAIA playoff game in 1998.He served as head coach at Hastings College in Nebraska, from 1990-1994, wherehe won conference championships in 1991 and 1992, and guided the team to threeNAIA playoff appearances. He has had additional experience as an assistant atMiami (Ohio) in 1986, as the head coach at Ohio Northern University in 1984 and

1985, and as an assistant at Indiana University in 1983.

A native of Lathrop, Missouri, Kratzer received a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Missouri Valley in 1971,and earned his master’s degree in education from Central Missouri State University in 1976. He was selected in the8th round of the 1972 NFL draft by the Cincinnati Bengals and moved to the Kansas City Chiefs in 1973. He servedin 1982 as the administrative assistant for Coach Bill Walsh and the San Francisco 49ers summer camp. He and his wife Suzanne have two grown children, daughter Danielle and son Reggie, who played for his father atLindenwood. They are proud grandparents of Danielle’s daughter Reaghan.

After the 2004 season and being responsible for coaching the leading tackler onthe Kent State University, Defense coach Messick was called to duty to train a mil-itary unit in Belgium, Congo. After six months extended duty he is back coachingas Defensive Coordinator here at the South Dakota Mines. Coach Kratzer says heis glad to have such an addition to our staff, and will bring the type of discipline,intensity and most of all long term commitment that our players here so deserve.His coaching stops include Kent State, Hargrave Military Academy, MarineMilitary Academy, Naval Academy and Bowie State University.

In addition, Messick has coached numerous interservice teams at U.S. Marine Corps bases, including Pearl Harbor,Hawaii (1977-79); Camp Pendelton, California (1981-82); and Parris Island, South Carolina (1983-84). He retiredfrom the Marine Corps in 1997 as a Lietenant Colonel following 28 years in the service. Messick graduated fromthe University of Oklahoma in 1969 with a bachelor’s degree in education. He and his wife Virginia reside in RapidCity. Their family includes daughter Jessica and son Scott and his wife Deirdre and twins Jake and Matt, and daugh-ter Caroline.

In 2006 he enjoyed competing in the SD MinesAlumni Game as well as the win over Haskell Indian Nations University and the game against ValleyCity. “We lost, but we moved and played as a team.”

Parents: Keith Kennedy and Becky CarlsonMichael was a an all conference and all state selection during his high school career at Pine Bluffs HighSchool. He got some quality minutes in 2005 and added to that last season playing in a handful ofgames and even getting credit for half a sack for a loss of four yards.

He will be a key player in 2007.
