GPS Old Boys Brief History GPS Old Boys Rugby Club is the successor in name to the Past Grammar School Football Club and it is the oldest surviving Rugby Club in Queensland and one of the oldest Rugby Clubs in Australia. The Club was officially formed in 1887 and consisted of a combination of both past and present Brisbane Grammar School players although a number of them represented Queensland as Past Grammar players in 1885 and 1886.

In 1889 the Past Grammar School Football Club was established as a separate identity distinct from the old side with its mix of past and present players. The formation of the Club was formalised at a meeting held at the Treasury Hotel in Brisbane on the 5th March 1891 and Mr. R.H. Roe, the Headmaster of Brisbane Grammar School was elected as President. Sir Charles Lilley and Sir Samuel Griffith, among others, were elected as Vice Presidents. It was decided that the Club colours would be red and white. Rugby was not played in Queensland from 1916 until reintroduced in 1928 at which time the BGS Old Boys’ Rugby Union Football Club again took itsplace in the Brisbane competition.

In 1930 the constitution of the Club was changed to allow past students from the other GPS schools to become members and although the name was retained that year it was later changed to GPS Old Boys’ Rugby Club and it played under that name for thefirst time in the 1931 season and has continued to be known and play under that name to the present day in the recognised blue andgreen jerseys. The constitution was again changed some years later and membership of the club is now unrestricted.

Forty-six of the Club’s members have played for Australia and one hundred and ninety- two have played for Queensland. Seven havecaptained Australian senior teams, two the Australian sevens team and one has represented and captained England and another Scotland. In all nine former members have played international football whilst playing with other clubs.

In more recent times the overall strength of the Club has been reflected in the results of the Doughty Shield Club Championshipcompetition: - 2006 – first, 2007 – second, 2008 – first, 2009 - second and in the number of teams fielded in Brisbane competitions: - eleven in 2008, and twelve in 2009.

President’s Report

The 2009 season was one that promised much for Jeeps after an outstanding club year in 2008. In many respects the club was not disappointed but the goal of an increased number of premierships was not achieved. It is a recognised fact that our teams often fail to realise their full potential on the playing field and that they are giant killers one week and also rans the next. The club must continue to strive for greater consistency across all grades and greater focus, dedication and discipline to training and playing the game is an absolute requirement if this is to be achieved.

In saying this there were some outstanding results during the year and Premier Grade in particular had some outstanding wins as did many of our other teams. Congratulations go to the members of the premiership winning Wyatt Cup team (7th Grade) and to all the players who contributed to the club’s success in coming second in the Doughty Shield club championship. The records will show that our teams finished in their respective grades in the following order:

Premier Grade 5th

1st Grade 4th – Preliminary Finalists 2nd Grade 3rd – Semi Finalists 3rd Grade 4th – Semi Finalists 4th Grade (A) 4th – Grand Finalists – Runners Up 4th Grade (B) 3rd – Semi Finalists Wyatt Cup 1st – Minor Premiers – Premiers Normanby Cup 4th –Semi Finalists Premier Colts 7th

Colts 1 3rd – Grand Finalists – Runners Up Colts 2.1 2nd – Grand Finalists – Runners Up Colts 2.2 8th – Part season only

The club continues to find ways to give all those who come to Ashgrove a game each Saturday. This year the number of registered players increased and the number of teams increased and a full season was played for the first time on the newly refurbished grounds which after some teething problems have begun to exhibit the properties they were designed and constructed for, “fast, sure, well watered and drained playing surfaces”. In 2010 they will be even better. The local and wider community support for Jeeps continues to grow and well attended home games with crowds sometimes approaching 5000 are not unusual on a Saturday afternoon at Ashgrove. The draw for season 2010 has been published and across the board it is far more equitable for all clubs delivering a consistent home and away programme.

The on and off field successes at Jeeps can be attributed in no small way to the unselfish contributions of the members of the committee, the coaches, the managers, the support staff, the members, the supporters and last but not least the players themselves particularly those who achieved representative honours in 2009. The club’s congratulations are extended to them.

Financially 2009 has been a tough year. The economic crisis has impacted on the financial operations of the club and most commercial enterprises and whilst our major and loyal sponsor of many years, the Norris Motor Group, was unable to continue, as were some of our smaller sponsors, we were fortunate to be able to welcome a new principal sponsor Witches Falls Winery and a number of new sponsors to our ranks. These companies and the assistance they provide to Jeeps is critical to the financial survival of the club and I urge you to support them as they support us. The costs of maintaining a first class complex as we now have at Ashgrove continue to increase and even with the contributions from our partners Valley District Cricket Club and Ashgrove GPS the enormity of the financial responsibility that goes with it should not be

lost on us. The revenue from subscriptions and donations alone will not cover the club’s operating costs are we are increasingly more dependent on revenue from external sources to fund our operations. The club is grateful for the support of its sponsors and the club’s thanks are extended to the following:-

Witches Falls, Jubilee Hotel, AWX, Rapid Copy, Blue Wire Media, Kooga, Secutor Securities, Barter Card, Brad Anderson Creates, Ithaca Iceworks and the Mee Family, Channel 7, All Sports Physiotherapy, Bank of Queensland, Stower Electrical, Apex Smash Repairs, Australian Financial Advisers and Ultimate Buildings.

There will be a monetary shortfall this year and the Treasurer will deal directly with the figures in his report but the clubs share of costs of the grounds refurbishment, the lighting upgrade and equipment purchases over and above the various grants have to date been largely funded from its own resources which makes it critical that Jeeps enjoys a strong and positive financial year in 2010.

I would like to extend my personal thanks to my committee- Dennis Boucher, Brian Sully, Ryan Webster, Alan Mills, Marty Silec, Danny Nugent, Andy Russell and Steve Smith and our GM Rod Torkington who have given unselfishly of their time and resources and who have all contributed mightily to the success of the 2009 season. Millsy particularly took on extra roles as a consequence of the untimely illness of Alex Pope. Dennis, Ryan, Alan and Steve will not be standing for committee in 2010 but have indicated they will continue to maintain an involvement in the club next year. I would also like to extend a special thanks to Lorraine Gorman and her band of canteen helpers whose help and contributions are an integral part of the success of Jeeps and to Rob Melloy who has worked tirelessly on the club’s database and computer systems. Thank you, Rob, for bringing us into the 21st century. Finally I would like to acknowledge the many years of dedicated service to Jeeps of John Sexton who retired from the committee at the end of 2008. A final thank you for the magnificent coaching efforts of Al Beauchamp, who announced his retirement after the Third Grade Semi Final. A successful premiership coach he has given valuable service to the young men under his charge over a number of years. The club has indeed been fortunate to have the services of these men.

Remember gentlemen Jeeps is your club. Its success depends on you and since 1887 it members have been trustees for future generations.

Thank you for a good year. It has been a pleasure to have been involved with you all.

Team Reports

Premier Grade Coaches: Matt Pini, Steve Phillpotts Joe Anderson (M) Scott Oakhill (M)

Queensland Premier Rugby Competition

2009 was a season where we played some outstanding rugby mixed in with some very disappointing results. At the end of the season we missed the finals by 2 points and looking back through the fixtures we can pinpoint 2 games were we let ourselves down and it cost us a final spot. The team has fantastic talent and huge potential; we just didn’t put it together when we needed to.

The team had fantastic wins against Sunnybank (H & A), Gold Coast (A) and West’s (A) which was played at GPS in the rain. Our best win of the season was against Brothers at home. We dominated the first half with our best rugby of the year and dug in deep to take out the game with Brothers coming home with a wet sail. Unfortunately our worst game of the year was against the same side away. Being in a position where we had to win our last 3 games we came from behind to draw at Souths, went to the Gold Coast and won there but fell short on the final day with a demoralising loss. The effort put in over the season had taken its toll and both mentally and physically and we could not jump the final hurdle and we fell agonisingly short of our goal.

We had some very impressive performances from individuals through 2009. Steve Miller was an inspiration once again and even though he missed several weeks with injury he still was voted best of 2009. Tom Sully who showed everyone he is all class and has a massive heart for the battle was another to lead the team on and off the field. Another player to rally and show he is going to be an important part of premier rugby was Jono Ellis. He too was struck by injury but was outstanding in the latter half of the season. Others to rate mentions were: Gav Warren, Dougal Blennehasset (who was fantastic in his first year) and Josh Pszczonka (who got better with each game.) Other players at times had good games but unfortunately for the team, we as a group did not play consistently enough and it showed in results. To succeed you need all players playing consistently to their potential and on many occasions we had passengers in games and it was left up to the others to take up the slack.

I would like to thank Steve Phillpots for his effort, support and calmness in the storm. Jake Winwood our strength trainer, Scott Oakhill and come back king Joe Anderson for all their effort, help and counsel over the year; Mike Madden and Dave Miles for their invaluable service and Rod Torkington for his work behind the scenes. Lastly, thanks to Dave Park, Alan Mills and the GPS Board for their support throughout 2009.

Reserve Grade Coaches: Nick Fogarty Scott McMullen, Alan Mills (M) Kate Kilpatrick(M)

Brisbane First Grade Competition

Season 2009 while at times was very satisfying was also a great let down. Reserve grade had used the services of over 50 players throughout the season and after the first round of games we were sitting in top spot. However close losses to Brothers, Souths and Easts by less than a converted try took some gloss off the ladder standing.

The development of players namely Mark Donaldson, Luke Bolster, Tegh Porter, Andrew Poulton, Cam King in the forwards and Nick Dangerfield, Adam Hinds and Josh Logan in the backs was particularly pleasing.

The second round was similar to the first with some big wins against the lower sides and close losses to Brothers and Easts, however the win over Souths at Souths was a highlight and greatly needed as we approached the finals. At the end of the season proper the side has finished in fourth place, with 4 points separating the top four teams. The knockout semi-final was played against East's, a side we failed against in the two encounters played during the year, however is a display which was the finest of the year GPS ran out winner 18-nil. The defensive effort of the side was simply outstanding a true testament to the commitment and fortitude of the playing list.

The side was feeling very confident going into the elimination final against South's, however an early lapse in defence in the opening 20minutes cost the side dearly and going into the halftime break 19-9 was going to be had to pull back. To the boys credit they stuck to the game plan and with a minute remaining trailed by 6. In the dying seconds of the game the side scored off a set play in the corner and needed only to covert the try to win after the fulltime bell. Unfortunately the kick just missed and the boys missed the opportunity to play in successive grand finals by a point. The efforts of Adam Hinds were outstanding kicking 6/7.

I would just like to thank the football committee for all their efforts behind the scenes, the reserve grade management team of Alan Mills and Kate Kilpatrick and Forwards Coach Scott McMullen for their efforts throughout the year.

Third Grade Coaches: Al Beauchamp, Andrew Shaw, John Hollamby (M) Scotty Hunter (A/M)

Brisbane Second Grade Competition The season from my point of view was unsuccessful. I expected with the group and playing talent available to win the grand final.

Our main rivals in the regular season had been Brothers and Souths. We lost at home to Brothers by 7 and away had our biggest loss of the season 31-12. Training on the Thursday before this game was a shambles due to having to have photographs taken that's no excuse for the loss however. Brothers in both games were the better side they were very skilled and disciplined at the breakdown their flyhalf being their stand out player. Souths beat us 24-12 at home and we gained revenge away 24-23.Souths went on to win the grand final. Souths were dangerous if you played undisciplined rugby against them. If you stood up to them and were extremely aggressive then the game was yours.

Easts finished fourth on the ladder. We beat them at home 8-6 and away 21-15 after having been down 15-0 at halftime. This game was won in the half time team talk delivered by Alan Beauchamp 'no more tries' and it came to pass. Easts went on to contest the grand final beating both ourselves and Brothers in getting there. They were really totally dominated by GPS in the minor semi then in the last 6 minutes the game turned after injuries and some appalling tactical decision making.

I cannot say that any player did not give 110% in the semi. The commitment and attitude was superb. We lacked, all season, a general to lead us around the field a dominant experienced 10. We lack a killer instinct. In short, the club lacks experienced players. It doesn’t have to be 100 miles an hour all the time. I will always remember after the semi and being obviously gutted when Jules (club captain now) said to me 'unlucky Andy it happens every year' I thought there lies the problem the club doesn't expect to win finals. Indeed going by what was said at the dinner it's not important to. If winning isn't important then why keep score it's certainly extremely important to me.

Being from the northern hemisphere I found the concept of playing then benching unusual and dangerous. If you have given your all how can you be expected to play again sometimes five minutes later. I remember that happening to one of our props playing two games in succession after an early injury in reserve grade. Then the player is often judged on how he went after having already played. Surely with the numbers playing and similar playing capabilities from reserve grade down to 4th grade you could use fresh benches. Then players would not be pigeon holed in set teams basically from the start of the season. You would have a rule whereby you didn't bench two weeks in a row this would also be better for club spirit as I for one would use the bench it's not a 15 man game anymore. It would also help as after our wins we could spend time together rather than half the team sit on a bench and half go home feeling not rated.

Regarding reserves when 2nd grade played at home for some reason I (know not why) 3rd grade played after us so making access to reserve players difficult as they obviously wanted to concentrate on their warm up and increasing the “them and us” philosophy. Really feel off the pitch needs more work teams should be encouraged to mix stay shower and have a feed, drink etc. I realize when its 30 degrees then this isn’t going to happen but on the colder nights why not take it in turn different teams laying on a spread. Why not have some form of competition at training involving the different teams maybe once a month be it a drill defence against attack or semi opposed 3 v reserves 2 v 4 and so on. When Millsy addresses the teams at training at 6 why not all go in the clubhouse sit down and maybe quickly review the weekend results and briefly address the teams re what lies ahead in training this week. At the moment there all spread out in their little groups in a large area sometimes it’s difficult to hear what's said, get everybody in together close tight knit. Make it a club not a gathering of teams maybe a club captain could reflect on their game strengths, weaknesses areas to improve or maybe try or hit of the week brief award. What I am trying to stress is bringing people together not setting them apart.

Well gentleman this concludes my report it was an enjoyable season but there is plenty to work on. The skills are there the ATTITUDE isn't. Regards,Andy Shaw.

Fourth Grade Coaches: David Lea, Daymon Tuka, Clayton Barry (M)

Brisbane Third Grade Competition

The 2009 season was the first at the club for me, Daymon and Clayton as a coaching team so our ambition was to continue the successes the 3rd grade competition team had had in the few years previous. In my belief 2009 was a highly successful year and the end of season points table reads that way; 602 points for, 213 against with a differential of 389; we played 18 games, won 11 lost 6 and drew 1. We strived to play an attacking style football and for the majority of the season we were able to achieve this. Our emphasis was on a solid set piece in the forwards as a launch pad for the backs to attack with width and purpose. The side in which we started season with, saw around 90% of the players going on to play higher grades with Josh Logan going on to play a small part in the premier side by the end of the season. Through the duration of the season we gave a large number of the younger players coming out of colts a chance to impress and many of these players not only did that but also went onto represent in 2nd and 1st grades. I believe we were able to foster a wonderful team feeling and 3rd grade was a team that players wanted to be a part of.

On the down side we lead the table for virtually the whole season only falter in the home straight and we finished in fourth place; with 4 weeks to go in the competition we were running in 1st place and had both the best for and against of any of the other teams. Most of the losses we sustained through the season were all by less than 7 points but sadly we had 2 blow outs in the last couple of weeks. This slide in form and at the final stage of the season came from a culmination of injuries to both our players and the teams above, the loss of our regular players hurt us badly and by the end of the Minor semifinal the side line resembled that of the emergency ward at the RBH.

Unless you are the premiers it is always a case of what if’s, but for 14 rounds of 18 we were the pace setters of the competition and as sad as it was to finish before the job was complete we have had a wonderful year and the statistics will back that up 9 times we kept opposition teams under 10 points, on 5 occasions we scored over 50 points and in 10 games we scored over 30 points in a game.

It has been an absolute pleasure coaching the 3rd grade side this year; we had a diverse range of ages and experience which formed the backbone of the side, young players were able shine under the wealth of experience the older heads brought to the table. I can’t wait to see what happens next with this group as I can only see them getting better and better.

Some 2009 Statistics: Biggest win/margin V North’s 80 to 0; Leading point’s scorer: Kell Cronin 74; Leading try scorer: Josh Logan 12; Best and fairest: Josh Logan; Best Forward: Liam Wiltshire; Captain: Matt Blinkhoff; Vice Captain: Ben Sexton; Leadership group; Julian Jefferies, James Park, Liam Wiltshire, Trent Bennett.

Fifth Grade Coaches: Rowan Sedgwick Ryan Webster Brendan Sexton Andrew Taylor

Brisbane Fourth Grade Competition as GPS

The season for the 4a's was very successful in many ways. We were one of four teams to make the grand-final only to be defeated by Uni 30-27.

We also unearthed some young players that will be the future of the club like Tim Wrigley, Dom Ameren, and Elliot O'shea to name some.

The season started well with the team only losing one game in the first round. But as the second round started the injuries took their toll in the club as well and we lost key players and lost five games in a row and finals were looking very unlikely. We won a couple of the next games and with three rounds left we needed to win two more games to make the finals, two games against Brothers teams and the other GPS team. We won one against the weaker Brothers team and had to rely on the other GPS team to get us into finals by knocking out Easts at Easts in the very last game of the regular session, 0-0 end score. We were into the finals unfortunately against the other GPS team one was going home unhappy.

The finals started with GPS 2, they had us the whole way, they had us in every department, but the game isn't over until the final whistle and with sheer determination the team kept in the hunt, and a turnover in the last 30 seconds by GPS 2 saw Mogi Wei cross the line for the winning try. The next final was against brothers2 which we came out and gave a rugby lesson to win 27-5

Sixth Grade Coaches: Rob Mills

Brisbane Fourth Grade Competition as GPS2

The year started with a great number of players turning up to play at GPS, presumably after a great year in 2008 in which the Club won the Club Championship. What that meant was a scramble to put together a second team in the 4th Grade Competition.

Our preparation was stunted as I came in at the last minute, but given the quality of the group we had, we were able to string together 4 wins, 2 losses and a draw from the first 7 rounds. By this stage, we were able to start building a strong year with a core group of players; and ultimately our strength came from being able to keep a consistent core.

Overall, we had a large number of players make appearances for us, and that is natural in a Club atmosphere; with many of our starting players making their way up through the grades and continually pushing upwards.

As the weeks progressed, our cohesion, fitness and self belief increased, to the point that we secured a semi final berth in 3rd position with a record of 12 wins, 4 draws and only 4 losses which meant that we only dropped 2 games in our last 13 rounds.

That success did not come without a cost, with 7 players suffering season ending injuries, but we had built good depth and those injuries allowed others to seize opportunities. We attacked at every opportunity and defended stoutly all season long, and coming into the semi finals, we believed that we had the team, the cohesion, the fitness and the game plan to go all the way. However, finals rugby just like the shape of the ball does not always bounce the way you would like or have planned for.

We came up against the other GPS team in the minor semi final and this contest would prove to be as tight and hotly contested as our last two Round encounters. During the season, we had a win and a loss against the other 4th Grade GPS team with each game separated by a single try. With time having run out on the clock, we were ahead 10-8 when we were dispossessed at the breakdown. To say that I was disappointed that we had coughed the ball up is an understatement; however to see Mogi Wei fleet footing his way to score under the posts was gut wrenching, not only for me, but for the entire squad. In the end, we were bundled out of the finals 15-10 after a successful conversion.

From where we started the year, I think it is fair to say that we exceeded the expectations of most if not all of the Club. However I am sure that if you speak to any person involved with our team this year and I am sure that mindset changed during the season, and we are now left lamenting a missed opportunity. And that is not taking anything away from the victors who took their opportunity to win.

Our team can be extremely proud of the way they came together, how they played, the spirit in which they played and of the results they did achieve; I am hoping they come back next year hungry to achieve more and I am sure that you will see many of them regularly playing in grades above 4th grade.

My thanks go to the players for their work, their attitudes and their commitment to each other. I also thank the Club and in particular to Ryan Webster who was masterful in his Management duties.

Seventh GradeCoach: Stuart Longworth, James Sully, Stephen Smith

Brisbane Wyatt Cup Competition

The Friday night specialists were made of blokes who could not play Saturday for work of other reasons but still wanted to play a good brand of rugby. The Wyatt Cup is keenly contested by a range of teams including the Easts Longhorns, AgVet (UQ) and Brisbane Irish.

Under the command of club young guns Stuart Longworth and James Sully the Wyatt Cup lads found themselves in first place halfway through the season when Stuart relinquished control to pursue the love of his life in other parts of the world. Who would have though rugby came second in Stuart’s life.

Casting his eye over suitable replacement club stalwart Alan Mills approach another old hand Stephen Smith to take the reins and finish the season off.

With some trepidation Smithy assumed the coaching mantle. At that stage training sessions were a little haphazard consisting of a few cigarettes and a bit of touch.

After watching the side go down by one try in a very gutsy second round clash against second placed Easts Longhorns, Smithy implemented a few changes in the training regime to try and bring some structure to their play as it was likely they would see the longhorns again in the finals.

And sure enough the side finished on top of the ladder at the end of the season with the longhorns on their heels in second, setting up a titanic struggle in the finals series.

The guys by this stage seeing the silverware on offer embraced some of the changes to the training regime retaining the cigarettes but swapping the touch for defensive drills and structured attaching options. Sul and Smithy were quietly confident the boys were up for a fight knowing full well the side had lost both regular season games to the longhorns.

The Major Semi didn’t disappoint. With a tighter defensive effort lead by the Satui boys the side came home with a one point win and booked a spot in the grand final.

Easts to their credit got up in the Preliminary Final a week later to set up a replay of the Major Semi.

From the whistle the GPS side got stuck in with the Satui boys again leading the fight. Stu McColl steered the boys around the park in a masterful performance at number 10 that made his dad, who travelled all the way from Longreach to his son play at Ballymore, a very proud man.

The boys were up at half time when their Captain Matt ‘Mex’ Dillon reminded the side that ‘if they don’t score we win’. And so with James Packer winning every lineout, a forward pack that refused to go backwards and a backline that was hungry for points, the GPS side shut out their opponents in a very dominant 40-10 win to take the silverware home to Yoku Road.

Needless to say Stan Satui and Stu McColl were named best and fairest for the season though any number of other players could have shared the award.

GPS OLD BOYS RUGBY UNION CLUB INC. ANNUAL REPORT 2009

GPS Colts Having had a successful 2008 season with two teams, Colts 1 (Runners-up) and Colts 2 (Premiers), in Grand Finals, and Premier Colts missing out on the big day after narrowly losing the Preliminary Final, hopes were high for more silverware in 2009.

The re-appointment of former Reds and Australia A prop Anthony Mathison as Head Coach of the Colts Program only reinforced our dreams of success and inspired all to train and play to their absolute ability.

Personal circumstances prevented Anthony from taking up his role and his presence, both as a coach and as a mentor, was sorely missed. Fresh from his Colts 2 triumph last season, Brendan Stanley took over the reins of Premier Colts with the help of Peter McIntosh as backs coach. Peter filled the vacancy left by Lachie Zangari who "retired" to his legal work after several seasons of coaching. On behalf of the club, I would like to sincerely thank Lachie for his time, efforts, passion and deep thought that went into his coaching.

Recruitment during the off season was not as "full on" as it had been in past years but the club still managed to have 87 registered Colts players for 2009 and fielded four teams without the hint of a forfeit. Our second Colts 2 team (the 2.2s) was magnificent during the season and, in no small way, assisted our top team in that grade on their way to another Grand Final.

Individual team reports have been tabled by the respective coaches and managers elsewhere in this document and I commend them to you.

Overall, it was another successful year for the GPS Colts Program with two teams (Colts 1 and Colts 2) reaching Grand Finals. Unfortunately, the day culminated in two narrow losses but it deters in no way from their successful achievements during the year. Congratulations to the coaches, Alex Cortey and Chris Booth (Colts 1) and Tony Rogers and Adam Heather (Colts 2) and to all the players involved in reaching "the one day in September". To the other coaches in the Colts Program, Brendan Stanley, Peter McIntosh, Michael Glover and Mark Sheppard let me congratulate you all on the achievements during 2009. Success comes in many more ways than premiership wins.

To the team managers, Steve Taylor, Richie McKinnon, Pete Silversmith, Dave Lynch and Craig Carter, a massive thank you for your input. It is the sign of a good and prosperous club when so many are happy to give of their time to mentor the players who are our very future. The efforts of all the guys from the Golden Gallopers deserves special mention. The Colts 2 teams were the beneficiaries of on and off field wisdom from these great people as coaches, managers, trainers and anything else that was needed. Well done.

Congratulations also to the Colts captain Rhys Jones who provided a steady hand to guide some of his more erratic team mates and found time to smash the club record by scoring 35 tries during the year. A fine young man who deserves our accolades.

Congratulations to the trophy winners in each grade and to our representative players. Peatrie Birney and Seaman Carboy were selected in the Papua New Guinea squad for the Under 20 World Championships in Kenya in April this year. Pertain further enhanced his reputation by being called up to the PPG senior squad for their Oceania ROC 2011 qualifiers. He played in two of the games and is now a fully capped international. Well done to Pertain and Seaman.

Isaac Weier has been included in the Australian Sevens squad from which the team will be selected for the Sevens Circuit next season and Pat Rynders is a member of the City Under 19 team which played Country Under 19 as part of the Festival of Rugby.

Thank you to the Committee of our club who work hard and long, especially on home game days, to ensure its success. As a club we are indeed fortunate to have these people who are prepared to give so freely of their time and energy so young men may play the game they love with their mates in a positive environment.

To the parents, families and supporters who followed our Colts teams across Brisbane and beyond, thank you for your support and your kind and uplifting comments. It is important to our young men, and to the support staff, that they receive that manner of support.

Thank you, of course, to the players who decided that playing Colts at GPS was a good idea. We are very proud of your attitude, commitment and efforts. I trust you enjoyed your experience. I hope, on behalf of the GPS club, that those players who were part of our community in 2009 decide to return next season whether in Colts or in Grades. One of our significant achievements over the last few years has been the number of Colts players who have continued through to the Grades and are making their contributions to the success of our great dub. No fewer than ten of our present Premier Grade team have graduated from our Colts ranks in the last five years and a couple more just before that.

I look forward to seeing you all in 2010.

Terry Donovan Colts Director

Premier Colts Coaches: Peter McIntosh, Brendan Stanley, Terry Donovan (M), Daniel Tasker (M)

Queensland Premier Colts Competition

After finishing in third place last season, there was a feeling that 2009 could take us a step further and crack it for a place in the Grand Final.

With the retirement from coaching of Lachie Zangari, another GPS past player Peter McIntosh took up the reins as Premier Colts backs coach. The team of Anthony Mathison and Peter McIntosh (Coaches) and James Couper (Trainer) was going to deliver the goods. The dream team soon disintegrated with both Anthony and James being overcome by work and study pressures and unable to commit to the full season. Up to the plate stepped premiership winning Colts 2 coach Brendan Stanley.

Brendan and Peter worked hard with the team during the year but the consistency of results didn't come. A near miss against eventual premiers Souths (3-7) and a draw with semi finalists Easts showed the mettle of the team. Victory doubles against Wests and Brothers and wins over Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Norths were not enough to sustain a strong attack on the top teams. GPS eventually finished 7th with 7 wins, 2 draws and 9 losses. Not good but not a disaster. The highpoints of the season were the come-from-behind wins against Wests and Gold Coast while the low point was definitely the 80 point mauling at the hands of Gold Coast in the second round.

Top points scorer was flyhalf Pat Smith with 72 while winger Isaac Weier topped the list of try scorers with 12. GPS scored 338 points for, putting us in 6th place, but the real problem was conceding 486, more than any other club except bottom placed Norths. Premier Colts used 43 players during the year which did not assist our cause. But the ability to overcome odds like that is a step towards proving yourselves to be a good team.

With the return in 2010 of five of the backline plus two forwards, and the experience of a year in Colts for some of the Colts 1 and Colts 2 players, prospects are certainly looking up for 2010. Recruitment is also well underway and the victory of the club's Under 17 team in the Division A Grand Final in that grade gives us a strong base from which to re-launch our push next year.

Thank you to Brendan and Peter for this season. Things didn't work out but it wasn't for lack of effort or commitment on either of your parts. Thank you also to General Manager Rod Torkington, President Dave Park and Rugby Committee Chair Alan Mills for the unwavering support during the season. The task could have been much more difficult than it eventually was.

Colts Two Coaches: Alex Corley, Chris Booth, Steve Taylor(M)

Brisbane Colts 1 Competition

A slow start in 2009 and with the first 3 games not going our way, some may have been excused for thinking this was going to be a long season. The colts 1 competition was a mixed bag this year and almost could have been divided in 2 as the results indicated with some very tough close games and some cricket scores. In combination with forfeits, bye’s and withdrawals the quality of the games was a concern in order to keep a group of young men focused on the job and building momentum. In the end the competition came down to 5 or 6 teams who could do something and the GPS spirit lifted in the second round to amend for the slow season start.

The season turning point was the second round game against East’s at East’s where the boys did something that has plagued GPS teams for years, beat the eventual minor premiership title holders on their own turf.

To turn the screws on those top 3 teams was critical to putting this team on a path to the finals and getting 2 out of 3 ain’t bad. The final campaigns started with a do or die game against Brothers in the last round of the competition, and the boy’s took that in their stride, finishing 3rd qualifier. Though a bit shaky in completing 70 minutes the steps were taken to knock over Sunnybank and University in the finals series to reach the grand-final against East’s.

Ok the result did not go our way for a second year running but the comments from the East’s coach on how we got to the grand final reflected all the above and that we were a major worry for them as the 10 – 14 scoreline indicated.

Out of the season were a number of highlights, Rhys Jones smashing the club try scoring record with 34 try’s for the season, (and a lot were against the tough teams). Toby Glennon collected a haul of points and James Dever grabbed 14 or so try’s. The experience of Seamus McWhirter, Mr anywhere Tim Richards and James Herbert complimented the backs. In the forwards Mr consistency Ben Ryan was the 70 minute man, Josh Whiting showed great talent along with Tim Southwood, Sam Champtaloup, and the Carbry Bros mixed it with the experience of Pat Trubshaw in complimenting a solid forward pack. Even a few hard hitting campaigns from that grisly, seasoned performer Manetti were thrown in the mix. The commitment award should go to Dylan Lindsay, (or his dad) for the dedication in driving down from Toowoomba for 2 nights a week for training and games, (and the luck for Cam Harm in getting a lift along the way).

In the end a season well done, thanks to Alex and Chris and hope all these guys continue playing in grades or back for another crack next year.

Brisbane Colts 2 Competition

This year the GPS Colts attracted fantastic numbers, with the Colts 2 squad having 56 players available at different times through the year. It was due to these numbers that the decision was made to enter a second team into the Colts 2 competition in Round 5. The two teams trained together all year as a single squad and became a close knit group that worked together to achieve the maximum success for both sides. All players should be proud of their efforts this year and we wish those leaving the colts program every success in grades next year. For those eligible for colts again next year we look forward to seeing you again next season for what will be another successful year.

Colts 3 (Colts 2.1)

A very successful year for the Colts 2.1 team this year. After a disrupted season due to sides forfeiting and withdrawing we finished the year with 15 wins from 18 and a better than 80% win rate. The side easily had the best for and against in the competition, scored 10 bonus points and narrowly missed the minor premiership by a single point.

Unfortunately the Colts 2 season was marred by other clubs constantly forfeiting and with two teams withdrawing from the competition late in the season. As a result the 2.1’s went into their Grand Final showdown with only one game played in the final 5 weeks of the competition, that being a courageous win in the Major semi final. After a gutsy effort the boys went down 14-12 against Easts. While the final result was disappointing certainly the effort and the season were not and the boys should be proud of all they achieved this year.

Congratulations to the team captain Tom Gardiner and Vice-captain Joe Hilton on their fantastic leadership this year.

Colts 4 (Colts 2.2)

In round 5 the Colts 2 team was split and the 2.2’s were born. The 2.2 side was a mixture of boys that were pushing for inclusion in the 2.1 side, those that could only train intermittently and others that could not train at all. While on paper the side did not taste fantastic success they did manage to record a couple of very good wins against quality opposition and even pushed the eventual premiers to the wire in what was almost the upset of the year.

Another great achievement this side managed was they played every scheduled game without forfeit. This is no easy thing when you’re the 4th team in colts a fact that a number of other clubs in the competition cannot claim to have matched. The 2.2 side provided excellent support to the senior GPS colts teams with 5 of their players in the 2.1 grand final and 3 in the Colts 1 grand final.

Congratulations to team captain Tom Cannon and Vice-captain Gerry Streek it was a good year boys.

Treasurer’s Report

TREASURER’S REPORT – 2009

As foreshadowed in my 2008 report, the 2009 season fully tested our cash reserves. Finalisation of the major ground redevelopment project including field lighting upgrade involved further investment of $226,000. The final sum involved unbudgeted expenditure totalling approximately $70,000. The Club will most likely need to borrow a further $60,000 to finance outstanding accounts.

Despite global economic conditions or perhaps motivated by them, club supporters rallied to assist. Even after the withdrawal of last years’ major sponsor, overall sponsorship income, member donations and subscriptions, golf day revenue and corporate tent revenue on match days all increased. Rugby Playing costs were contained within budget (even if this was partially the inadvertent by-product of a serious illness to our Rugby Director) and Administration Costs were also within budget despite a significant increase in ground maintenance costs which will be ongoing in order to maintain the quality of the grounds post redevelopment.

The club’s financial statements are prepared in accordance with accounting principles and therefore record an operating surplus of $ 150,037. The accounts treat government grants for the redevelopment project as income. However, 2009 cash expenditure significantly exceeded cash receipts due to the non-cash nature of some income sources, scheduled repayment of borrowings from the QRU, and additional capital expenditure committed to finalise the Ground Redevelopment project. A dispute between the tenants and the redevelopment contractor went to mediation but did not produce a positive outcome for the tenants. An overview of financial aspects of club activities with comparisons to prior years is outlined below:

2009 2008 2007 $ $ $ Fund Raising 109,684 148,661 146,389 Rugby Playing (9,165) (30,816) 9,441 Administration (100,554) (101,411) (107,857) OPERATING RESULT (35) 16,434 47,973

Note The 2009 Fund Raising outcome was impacted by application of significant Bartercard sponsorship dollars towards raffle prizes in order to generate cash .

CAPITAL PROJECTS – 2009 Grants Received $ 150,073 Capital Expenditure $226,000

The Club is indebted to many members and supporters for their contribution during 2009. While so many individuals and businesses continue to remain actively involved, the Club’s future prospects both on and off the field remain positive. Nevertheless, 2010 will present a new range of challenges. Due to its own financial status, the QRU recently advised the likelihood of a reduction in 2010 Premier Club funding. Coming so soon after the funding had been reaffirmed, the announcement represents a material hurdle to be overcome. It also became apparent during 2009 that ground maintenance and utility expenditure commitments have materially increased as a consequence of the ground upgrade and a general rise in energy costs . We are very grateful to Ashgrove GPS Juniors for their willingness to contribute their share of those increased costs in 2009 and in future years . That those arrangements could be agreed so seamlessly is tangible evidence of the close working relationship that has developed between the clubs in recent years. Our executives have agreed to consider a VDCC proposal to pool resources across the seasons so that ground maintenance costs can potentially be contained and a better overall outcome be achieved for tenants. We have maintained our policy of aiming to deliver safe and medically sound facilities for players. There is a significant cost to that policy and a post season review will examine whether there are opportunities to contain those costs, particularly in the accessing of medical supplies.

Thanks again to everyone who contributed to 2009 .

Brian Sully – Treasurer.

Grant Funding Acknowledgements

During 2007-09 GPS Rugby Union Club and other tenants of Ashgrove Sports Grounds have been the beneficiaries of significant funding from all levels of Government. The first project in this period was the Water Management and Ground Re-surfacing Project which has been completed. This was the largest single project ever undertaken at Ashgrove Sports Ground and would not have been possible without the generous support of the following organisations.

GPS Rugby Union Club and other tenants have also completed a project to upgrade the field lighting at the sports ground. This project would not have been possible without the support of the following organisations.
