From The Editor Roger Pierce

We’ve had to say goodbye to KrisWilliiams, who wrote the GCCRider column for this

newsletter for the last two years. Sheand husband Jerry have moved on toKentucky. I wish to extend our heartfeltthanks for the years of distiguishedservice to the GCC.

With this goodbye comes anopportunity – we need a new writer forthe GCC Rider column. What you do isfind someone among our 600+members with an interesting story, andwrite a few words about them.Optimally, you would be able to do thisfor each newsletter, which is just oneperson every two months. Give me acall if you would like to give this a try.

I am always looking for articleswritten by GCC members for inclusionin the newsletter. Subjects that are

good are a ride or tour you participatedin, or some aspect of cycling inGainesville and/or Florida. Thesubmission deadlines are published onthe next to last page of each newsletter, and transmitted via GCCMail a coupleof weeks before the due date.

Gainesville Cycling FestivalRoger Pierce, Director

The big news about the Festivalthis year is that we will have anew start location for the Horse

Farm Hundred. If you have been atMorningside for the last couple ofyears, you couldn’t help but notice theparking mess as riders pulled into the“natural” areas on the entry road inorder to park.

We are talking to the staff at LoftonHigh School, which is adjacent toMorningside. Hopefully, this will give usbetter facilities and better parking. When the contract is signed, we’ll startthe registration process.

Be sure and check out page 7 for ourcall for volunteers. While we have ourcentral cadre in place, we are lookingfor a few key people to handle some ofthe tasks that must be done before theriders get here. We’ll be signing you upfor event weekend positions starting atthe Labor Day picnic.

We have a good entry in the HorseFarm Hundred T-Shirt Contest, but arestill looking for a Santa Fe shirt design.See the last newsletter for contestdetails and get yourself free Festivalentry and a couple of your t-shirts!

President's Letter

It's that time of year again when a lotof us are training for GCC's veryown Gainesville Cycling Festival.

Whether we are doing the hard, hillycenturies or just a short recreationalride we need to be constantly aware ofthe dangers on the road. As we areaware some drivers have hostilitytowards cyclists while others simplyare not paying attention to their driving.Cell phones, kids, even DVD playersmay be distracting an otherwisecareful motorist. Recently a law hasgone into effect requiring motorists togive a three foot clearance to all

cyclists. Those of us counting ondrivers to obey this law are inviting anaccident. Remember, who was rightand who was wrong is absolutely

irrelevant. Who survives, or better yetavoids an accident should be ourprimary concern. I urge you all to ridenot only legally but ethically andcourteously as well. Things such assignaling motorists of turningintentions and not riding more than twoabreast not only comply with Floridalaw but also provide a courtesy todrivers that they are more likely toreturn. Give good and you'll get good.Let's all have a great and a safeCycling Festival.

Hope to see you on the road…

Bob Newman

Road Rage By Roger Pierce

No, I'm not talking about mad cardrivers. I'm talking about madcyclists.

When that rare incident with amotorist occurs out on the road, thefirst thing you realize is that you mighthave been killed. This, of course, hasa profound effect on how you look at

the situation and, if you stop thinking, about how you behave. We would liketo urge you to continue to think, and tokeep in mind what is legal, and whatcan get you charged with assaultand/or battery. Do not touch the driveror their vehicle, and if you wind up in

conversation, keep it civil and at anadult level. Be especially careful if themotorist has deliberately initiated theconflict, or is otherwise aggressive.

Fortunately, these incidents arerare, and we don't have much chanceto practice our response!

Trail Repairs Report to GCC By George Edwards

Here is a quick summary of whatis being done to remediate themost recent problems with

deteriorating pavement on theGainesville-Hawthorne Trail. Therewas a previous series of problemswhich occurred in 2002-2003 and weretreated by removing some pavementand re-paving.

I first reported the current problemsto Park management in early 2006.We devoted a considerable amount oftime to determining the real cause ofthe problems becausewe did not want toexpend t ime andfund-raising efforts onthe wrong fix. Wethought it was roots, butthere were otherpossible problems. Wesurveyed the entire trail, photographing damage and writingdetailed descriptions.

After talking with Jim Weimer, thePark Biologist, experts at the Office ofGreenways and Trails, and localpavement contractors we concludedthat the main problem indeed was treeroots growing at the interface betweenthe crushed rock base the the ratherthin asphalt paving. OGT suggestedan approach which includedroot-pruning at the edge of thepavement, flattening with a poweredvibrating plate compactor, and sealingwith a rubberized crack sealer. Otheroptions were cutting out the damagedsections, removing the root, and fillingthe gap with hot-patch asphalt. Oneexpert wanted us to dig a ditch thelength of the Trail on both sides and fillit with rock salt. Park staff elected totry the process developed by OGT.

I went over to the St. Mark's Trail, and borrowed OGT's single-prong rootrake, which fits our BobCat. We alsotried a DitchWitch, which worked wellto cut the roots, but tended to throwdirt all over the trail. The root rake wasthe better solution. We cut a lot ofroots, and then waited several monthsfor the roots to decay, and also to seeif any of the trees developed problems. So far we haven't ost a tree.

After the roots decayed sufficiently,I used the funds donated by the

Gainesville Cycling Club last year tothe Friends of Paynes Prairie, Inc. torent a plate compactor. We tried threedifferent machines before settling on amodel that the crew liked because itdid the most work with the least effort.

Using a crew of prison inmatesunder Park supervision, we tried thetechnique on various parts of the Trail. It is not perfect, but the remainingbumps are minor, and most of thereally dangerous heaves which couldtrip a cyclist (not to mention an in-line

skater) are pretty well gone betweenCR 234 and Boulware Springs. Theremaining bumps seem to be mostlythe beads of sealant standing proud ofthe pavement surface, and are slightlyuncomfortable, but not dangerous.

There are still some sections in thethe Hammock which have not beenfixed, but they will be addressed. TheEastern section of the Trail is yet tocome.

Crew scheduling for this work isdifficult, because the Preserve has anumber of other areas where work iscritically needed, including somesidewalks in the picnic area which arenot handicapped accessible, so thecrew cannot stay on one location forvery long. Like working with manycontractors, thingsget done in fits andstarts.

Also, the bridgesover LochloosaCreek and the otherc reek ( I can ' tr e m e m b e r t h en a m e ) a r edeteriorating, andneed new deckt i m b e r s .Fortunately, Froghathas donated fundingto purchase theneeded lumber, and

work on the bridges should becompleted this Summer.

The Board of Directors of theFriends of Paynes Prairie, Inc. wantsto express our gratitude to theGainesville Cycling Club for thegenerosity which helped make theserepairs possible. It is important for youto understand that your gift madecycling conditions better for the entirecommunity of Trail users, and GCCmust be commended for thispublic-minded act. It is an excellent

thing when an act whichcan help GCC membersa l s o h e l p s t h ecommunity at large.

In turn, if GCCmembers appreciate theimproved conditions, they could send a noteby email to Park

Manager Dav id Jowers a [email protected], and/orAssistant Park Manager Jason Maurerat [email protected]. I amsure these guys would appreciatehearing that you noticed their hardwork.

If anyone has feedback about therepairs, please send them to me. Regards, George EdwardsPresidentFriends of Paynes Prairie, Inc.

Biking Madrid By Karelisa Hartigan

Ibiked Madrid and survived!

In June Kevin and I spent a week inMadrid, where we saw, listed amongthe walking tours, a Bike Tour ofMadrid. Of course I insisted we do it. Itwas a good tour - and a challengingone- during which we covered aboutnine miles around the city.

Once fitted with a bike and helmet(but no mirror) we set off through thestreets of Madrid. Many of the streetsare pedestrian streets - which meansthey are marked off with largeconcrete balls or numerous metalposts and filled with pedestrians, all ofwhich need to be carefully avoided. The streets of Madrid, like those ofmost European cities, are cobblestoneor brick, which adds another challengeto the ride.

The guide was good on facts, butperhaps not so good on guiding. Hedid not use hand signals; from time totime he called back: "After the turn wego up some steps- you may want towalk your bike!" I missed Chandler'sfamiliar pre-trip advice about watchingout for touching wheels, especially asit seemed many of the 17 other riderswere not particularly familiar withgroup riding. When not on pedestrianstreets or riding through cobblestonesquares, we followed sand pathsaround several of Madrid's beautifulparks.

So we rode through Plaza Mayor,Madrid's beautiful main square, wevisited the Egyptian Temple de Debod,a gift to the city from the Aswan area

of Egypt, Plaza de la Villa, with itsstatue of the Spanish leader of theforces of Christianity against the Turksat the Battle of Lepanto. We stoppedby the Royal Palace, Europe'sthird-largest palace built in the style ofVersailles and housing over 2,000rooms. We cut down to the Prado, thence to the elegant circle whichdefines the monument to thoseunknown citizens who died in the revoltagainst Napoleon. Finally we left thestreets and entered the shady paths ofthe beautiful Parque del Buen Retiro. There we admired the Crystal Palace, passed by children laughingdelightedly at puppet theater, watchedpeople rowing around the park's largelake (something Kevin and I didanother day).

"Now back to the bike store!"exclaimed our guide. I envisioned aride along a shady bike path. But no!We plunged into the midst of Saturdaynoon traffic, cycling directly upMadrid's main avenues. After passing by Madrid'ssignature Puerto deAlcala, we rode up Callede Alcala, past thefamous Cibeles statue;we cut around buses, cruised into centrallanes, rode boldly arounddelivery trucks andcrews setting up for aparade the next day. Allof the Spanish driversgave us right of way, everyone was courteous. Finally we returned to thepedestrian streets wehad cycled along somethree hours before. Weall made it back safely- itseemed almost amiracle. Nevertheless, itwas a wonderful way to see manyparts of a beautiful city in a short time- and with the pleasure of riding a bike.

One further note: we were in Spainto participate in the Pueblo Inglesprogram. I encourage all readers tocheck the website for this program. Asvolunteers we spent a week in aremote Spanish village, where our"job" was to talk English to Spaniards

who work in international companiesand want to improve their English. Itwas one of the most rewarding and

exciting programs we have ever done- and it is free. Get yourself to Spain, and you have a free week, living innice accommodations with three finemeals a day, no distractions. Theprogram operates every week of theyear and they need volunteers. Checkthe website and contact me if you wantfurther information.
