Our MissiOn

For over 35 years, Mary Bird perkins Cancer Center’s mission has been to fight cancer by providing patients with the highest quality radiation therapy available, compassionate care and comprehensive support services - treating patients regardless of their ability to pay. Mary Bird perkins is also dedicated to fighting cancer through education, prevention and early detection services and research.

MissiOn AccOMplished thrOugh pArtnerships

over the years, MBp has been fortunate to forge many valuable partnerships in the fight against cancer. this organization could not do what it does without the steadfast and dedicated support of its community partners and donors, local physicians, existing hospital partners, cancer service organizations, early detection partners, academic and research partners and many more. these partnerships combine powerful resources and areas of expertise to benefit cancer patients and their families. they also help improve the overall health of the community.

thank you to the many, many partners who make the work of MBp possible. Your passion inspires us every day to work harder to eradicate this terrible disease and bring new hope to future generations.

Mary Bird perkins Cancer Center is what it is today because of its tremendous community support and dedicated partners in the fight against cancer. During 2007, we had incredible opportunities to partner with a multitude of individuals and organizations working toward the same goal – to end this dreaded disease and lessen the burden of cancer in the community. there were many examples of groups working together – through innovative partnerships – to reach this common goal and we are grateful to them all.

our partnership with our lady of the lake gained national recognition this year. You will read in the pages ahead about the Cancer program of our lady of the lake and Mary Bird perkins and why we were selected to participate in the prestigious nCCCp pilot. We are honored to join this elite group of hospitals and centers leading the transformation of cancer care in the united States.

the MBp-lSu partnership also claimed a great achievement. Generous donors helped to create the Dr. Charles M. Smith endowed Chair of Medical physics at lSu. And, Kenneth Hogstrom, phD, chief of physics at Mary Bird perkins and director of lSu’s Medical physics and Health physics program, was appointed to the $1 million endowed chair to support cancer research.

Certainly, we had many partnerships surrounding our dynamic outreach program. Working in collaboration with other organizations to offer free cancer screenings, 2007 marked a major milestone as we screened the 20,000th person for cancer. this would not have been possible without unwavering donor support.

It was announced in 2007 that Mary Bird perkins and St. elizabeth Hospital in Gonzales would be partnering to build a new radiation treatment facility for citizens of Ascension parish and surrounding areas, offering more convenient access to outpatient cancer care.

In this report you will read about the many ways that resources have been leveraged – among individuals, organizations, corporations and foundations – to fight cancer through innovative partnerships.

It is through these effective partnerships, that we have been so privileged to be a part of, that make all of this good work possible. thank you to all of our partners – in cancer outreach, patient treatment and all points in between – who every single day provide their valuable time and talents to make a difference in the health of our communities for generations to come.

Sincerely,

todd D. StevensPresident and CEO

Cancer Survivor Sherrill Womack Lane Calls MBP Partnership with Community a Wonderful AssetA native of Baton Rouge, graduate of lSu, wife, mother, professional volunteer and lay eucharistic minister at trinity episcopal Church, Sherrill lane believes her main ministry right now is her family. Having been treated at Mary Bird perkins for breast cancer in 2007, she’s looking at life a little differently than she did before. But that wasn’t the first time she was a patient at Mary Bird perkins.

In 2003 lane was successfully treated for a non-cancerous tumor that wrapped around her optic nerve. the tumor was causing the nerve to swell, endangering her sight. “I was referred to Dr. Henkelmann who told me my case was going to be very complex,” said lane. this was because Sherrill’s tumor was near her eye and brain. Mary Bird perkins had the technology and expertise required to successfully treat her case. explained Dr. Greg Henkelmann, “Radiation treatment planning and delivery was complicated by the immediately adjacent sensitive structures such as the eye and brain. Irradiation was delivered using non-coplanar, intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRt). the high precision micro-multileaf collimators shaped the multiple beams and created a dose distribution that conformed extremely closely to the target.”

“each time I went for treatment I would be in the room for about 25 minutes as the radiation had to be delivered from so many different directions,” said lane. this was because, said Henkelmann, the daily treatment utilized state-of-the-art, radiographically controlled, image guided radiation

Throughout her own treatment experiences, Sherrill Womack Lane witnessed first-hand the importance of MBP’s community partnerships.

therapy (IGRt), and sophisticated radiographic guidance was used immediately before each treatment. Sherrill’s story had a happy ending. While her peripheral vision is compromised, the tumor is gone and lane retained her sight.

“I am so thankful we have Mary Bird Perkins in our community. It’s such a wonderful asset. I know their technology is state-of-the-art and they have medical and technical experts who know how to use it – I’m living proof of that. But another important part was being able to remain close to my family, friends and church. That was a tremendous comfort. I truly believe it contributed to the positive outcome of my experience at Mary Bird Perkins.” Sherrill Womack lane

In 2007 an annual mammogram detected a lump very deep within lane’s breast. She had a lumpectomy and asked Dr. Henkelmann to be her radiation oncologist. “With the brain tumor, I had to take large doses of steroids and it was like my brain was on speed or something – I could never shut it down. I couldn’t find a quiet spot in my brain to think or to read,” lane explained. “With breast cancer, without the prednisone, it was totally different. I experienced some small moments of panic. But the further into treatment I got, something very strange and wonderful happened,” said lane. “I felt like someone wrapped a shawl around me and I wasn’t afraid. I know it was the Holy Spirit. I felt God with me the whole time and I’m so grateful.”

lane said that the MBp staff helped to alleviate her fears and that she never doubted for one second that she was in good, caring hands. “even the receptionist and the security guard greeted me

with a smile and a kind word,” said lane. She can remember overhearing a radiation therapist explaining to a very ill patient that he needed to come in on Saturday and Sunday mornings for extra treatments and that the therapist would be there waiting for him. “they wanted him to know that someone would be looking out especially for him, hoping that would make him feel better. that really touched me. I’ll never forget that.”

lane believes the community needs to know that everyone has access to Mary Bird perkins. She was willing to share her story publicly to help tell the mission of MBp. “When I was filming a commercial for the Center, the female makeup artist asked me how my breast cancer was found. When I told her it was detected by a mammogram, she said she couldn’t afford one. So I told her about the free screenings Mary Bird offers. then she said if they found cancer, she couldn’t afford the treatment. I told her Mary Bird could help with that too. I hope that brief interaction made a difference in her knowing that help is out there if she needs it – and that she’ll get screened.”

lane doesn’t worry about what she’ll do if the cancer comes back. “For one thing, I know I can handle it. For another, I’m not going to live the rest of my life waiting for what could happen.”

Instead lane’s hopeful plans for the future include going to seminary when her last child, who is currently 11 years old, graduates from high school. Her husband, an Assistant Attorney General for the State of louisiana, is fully supportive of her plans. For now, she plans to continue her ministry at trinity and to stay aware of the richness of her life. “the love and grace of God, the love of family and friends, all highlight how important life is.”

MBP and Its Early Detection Partnerships Screen Over 20,000 PeopleMaking a difference in the fight against cancer is a community effort – and Mary Bird perkins’ CARe network and its partners are delivering real results. In only six years the CARe network’s early detection outreach initiative has grown from a pilot program to having screened its 20,000th person in 2007.

Since 2002, over 464 free screening events have been held in southeast louisiana for breast, colorectal, prostate and skin cancer.

today, the CARe network is a best practice model for a partnership-based effort to effectively fight cancer within the community. “We couldn’t do this without so many dedicated partners committed to this cause and the generosity of donor support from a caring community,” said Renea A. Duffin, executive director of Mary Bird perkins’ CARe network.

MBp clinically collaborates with other health care agencies to provide screenings. In 2004, Mary Bird perkins, Woman’s Hospital and YWCA enCoReplus established regular breast cancer screenings to help fight cancer. For colorectal, skin and prostate cancer screenings, the CARe network partners with our lady of the lake, St. elizabeth Hospital in Gonzales and St. tammany parish Hospital in Covington. For breast cancer screenings, the CARe network teams up with Woman’s Hospital. this latter partnership served Mel eskridge well when she found herself desperately in need of help.

It was the morning of her 34th birthday that eskridge felt a lump in her right breast. She wasn’t even old enough for her first screening mammogram (age 40, according to American Cancer Society national screening guidelines).

Through partnerships with Woman’s Hospital, LSU HCSD and YWCA ENCOREplus, Mel Eskridge was able to participate in a free breast screening which led to her diagnosis of breast cancer. Pictured (l to r) are Eskridge and her children Rishard, Jasmine and Jada.

nor did she have a doctor. Her family, originally from new orleans, had relocated to Dallas for a year after Hurricane Katrina. now living in Baton Rouge, her fiancé and three children – Jasmine, 13; Jada, 9; and Rishard, Jr., 2 – were still getting used to life in their newly adopted city.

eskridge did the only thing she could think of. She went to Woman’s Hospital to find help.

“I thought a hospital for women would know what I should do,” she said. A nurse practitioner did a clinical breast exam and recommended that she come back for a free breast cancer screening being offered just a few days later by MBp and Woman’s Hospital.

“Our partnership with Mary Bird Perkins and the CARE Network has saved lives through earlier detection, but in breast cancer, there is no such thing as ‘too early.’”

teri G. Fontenot,president and Ceo, Woman’s Hospital

eskridge returned to have a clinical breast exam, followed by a workup that included a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound. “there definitely was something there,” she said, “but everyone seemed to think it was benign.” Surgeon Dr. Michael Hailey was consulted and ultimately performed a biopsy. unfortunately, the tumor was not benign. eskridge had breast cancer. In addition to chemotherapy and lumpectomy, she underwent removal of several lymph nodes under her arm. She then had to undergo six weeks of radiation treatment at Mary Bird perkins under the care of Dr. Renee levine.

“I see it all as heaven-sent,” eskridge said. “I went to Woman’s thinking ‘who would know better?’ and they told me about the screening coming up. then

Dr. Hailey took me as his patient. And now I’m here at Mary Bird perkins. Without all those people helping me, I wouldn’t be here. I am blessed.

“It’s not easy but there’s a reason I’m still here. I’m a survivor. I keep fighting for my kids. they’re my strength.”

For national prostate Cancer Awareness Month in September, the Cancer program of our lady of the lake and Mary Bird perkins partnered with barbershop owner King Davis to boost screening participation among African-American males. Davis permitted olol and MBp to park their mobile medical clinics directly across the street from his barbershop – a long-time neighborhood place to meet and greet while getting a haircut on a Saturday morning.

“Medical researchers aren’t sure why there’s a higher incidence of prostate cancer in black men than white men, but there is,” said Duffin. “lack of access to wellness screening and not having health insurance have long been factors in the failure to detect this cancer early enough to have options in treating it,” she explained.

the results of this particular screening were significant with double the average rate of abnormalities. on average, prostate cancer screenings result in an overall abnormal rate of 7.2% of participants needing some form of follow-up care. At this screening, the overall abnormal percentage was 17.6%. of the 74 men screened, 21 had not been screened in over 2 years and 23 had never been screened.

highly-specialized eye cancer procedure.

A new collaboration and protocol was developed in 2007 for treatment of ocular melanoma – or cancer of the eye. A rare condition, accounting for only one in every 500 cancers in the u.S. or approximately 1,800 cases per year, it can not only cause blindness but also can lead to death. Years ago the only treatment was removal of the eye. today, there is an option that can save both eyesight and a person’s life. In november 2007, the first patient was treated.

“this is one of the only life-threatening ocular tumors,” said Jeff Fuller, MD, olol ocular oncologist. “We do the treatment not just to try help preserve their eye and their vision as much as possible, but to save their lives as well.”

A gold shield, or plaque, is inserted behind the eye. the smooth side of the plaque provides a barrier to protect the brain while the radioactive ‘seeds’ inserted on the other side radiate the tumor.

John Gibbons, phD, MBp medical physicist stated, “the best thing is that patients don’t have to travel. they can stay in louisiana.”

this procedure was performed in collabo-ration with Retina & Vitreous of louisiana. Dr. Jeff Fuller, ophthalmologist and retinal specialist, olol, performed the surgery; MBp radiation oncologist Dr. Kenneth lo handled radiation treatment planning to ensure the placement and combined dose of the seeds would not harm any nearby critical structures; and Dr. John Gibbons, MBp chief of clinical physics, oversaw the handling and insertion of the radioactive seeds.

the program’s full accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Medical physics educational programs, Inc., or CAMpep, directly resulted in an influx of program applicants. As one of only twelve accredited programs in the nation, this prestigious recognition attracted 70 applications from highly qualified seniors majoring in physics and related science and engineering fields. “this is double the

number of such applicants from previous years, which we attribute to our CAMpep accreditation,” stated Dr. Kenneth Hogstrom, MBp chief of physics and professor and director of the lSu Medical physics and Health physics program. “Accepting only five or six new students into the program for fall, 2008 from the large number of applicants will make our task difficult but will continue to ensure recruitment of the highest quality students.”

the partnership also saw the lSu Board of Regents fund the remaining $400,000 of the Dr. Charles M. Smith Chair of Medical physics – a $1 million endowed chair to support cancer research. Dr. Hogstrom was appointed current holder of the chair. “It is truly an honor to be the inaugural holder of a chair intended to help fight cancer and was made possible by the benevolence of Dr. Smith and Mary Bird perkins supporters,” commented Hogstrom.

“Proceeds from the chair already support graduate students and other researchers as they explore new ways of treating cancer with radiation.”

Dr. Hogstrom

In 2007, the program reported on its research progress through an impressive 16 oral posters and presentations at the annual national meeting of the American Association of physicists in Medicine in Minneapolis, Mn. “Although results of this research are already beneficial to our patients, they will be shared worldwide as we are submitting them for publication as peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals – an important step to putting Mary Bird perkins Cancer Center research on the national and international map,” said Hogstrom.

In addition, the lSu campus added a new assistant professor and researcher, Dr. polad Shikhaliev, whose world-class research is focused on developing a new breast Ct system that will detect

breast cancer at its very early stages. And, Mary Bird perkins added two new medical physicists, bringing the number to ten medical physicists and five medical dosimetrists.

the medical physics team was a major player in the plans to open a fourth facility in Gonzales in partnership with St. elizabeth Hospital. the initial studies done by the medical physics team on “shielding design for the radiotherapy linear accelerator and Ct simulator” are important to facility design and future safety of patients, staff and visitors. prior to the projected 2008 opening of the new Center, medical physicist Angela Stam also led the implementation of a new prostate seed brachytherapy program at St. elizabeth Hospital. “the success of duplicating this program at this facility is very encouraging,” said Dr. Sheldon Johnson, MBp radiation oncologist. “I believe it predicts future successful cooperative endeavors in cancer care with St. elizabeth Hospital and its medical staff.”

the medical physics team spearheaded several important technology upgrades in 2007:

the tomotherapy Hi-Art unit has a newly commissioned jaw width which increases the ability to treat irregularly shaped tumors while sparing critical organs. “Initial clinical use and ongoing research investigation show this modality to be important for some head and neck cancers,” said MpB radiation oncologist Dr. Robert Fields.

the Ge lightSpeed Rt was upgraded to provide enhanced image capacity, allowing scans to be completed in one-fourth the time, which is particularly important for those patients receiving 4-D scans. Following acceptance testing and commissioning by medical physics staff, the system was released for patient use.

National Cancer Institute Selects the Cancer Program of Our Lady of the Lake and Mary Bird Perkins

Mid-year 2007, the Cancer program of our lady of the lake and Mary Bird perkins was recognized nationally for its excellence in cancer care. It was one of only 14 sites in the country selected by the national Cancer Institute (nCI), part of the national Institutes of Health, to participate in its Community Cancer Centers program (nCCCp) pilot. the three-year pilot was established to form a national network of community cancer centers to expand cancer research and to help further deliver the latest, most advanced cancer care to a greater number of Americans in the communities in which they live. A successful pilot will lead to the nationwide launch of the nCCCp in 2010.

the national Cancer Institute leads the nation’s efforts to discover better ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer. In its labs in Bethesda, Maryland, and throughout its network of scientists and nCI-designated Cancer Centers, nCI carries out groundbreaking research and connects patients and their families to the highest caliber, state-of-the-art care. However, nCI recognizes that the vast majority of people in our country are diagnosed and cared for in the communities where they live. In fact, nCI estimates that 85% of cancer patients in the u.S. are diagnosed at community cancer centers. Many patients are not treated at the major cancer centers because of the distance from their homes, or for other personal or economic reasons.

the nCCCp seeks to bring more Americans into a system of high-quality cancer care; increase participation in clinical trials; reduce cancer health care disparities; and improve information sharing among community cancer centers.

the network being developed through this pilot project may provide new options for the conduct of clinical trials and may speed the testing of new drugs and devices to combat cancer. With the success of the nCCCp pilot, nCI hopes to expand the number of participating hospitals to reach an even broader range of communities in the future. nCI believes it will achieve ultimate success by the number of cancers prevented or diagnosed at their earliest stages, and by the number of lives saved.

What is the Cancer Program of OLOL and MBP?

the Cancer program of our lady of the lake and Mary Bird perkins is the most comprehensive cancer program in the greater Baton Rouge region. It offers patients the convenience of receiving high-quality, advanced cancer care in one location, close to home. the Cancer program offers surgery, chemotherapy and radiation and has been accredited since 1992 by the American College of Surgeons – the gold standard for community-based cancer care. the Cancer program serves over 2,200 newly-diagnosed cancer cases each year.

“Community hospitals and private practice oncologists provide outstanding health care for millions of Americans. NCI is committed to identifying ways to integrate the latest that science has to offer into this already exceptional community-based care.”

Dr. John e. niederhuber, Director, national Cancer Institute

“It was clear at the nCCCp launch in Bethesda that we are in stellar company among the other pilot sites,” said todd Stevens, president and Ceo, Mary Bird perkins. “We look forward to sharing best practices nationally with other top community cancer programs, knowing that our work for the next three years will result in improved access to quality cancer care across the nation.”

“our lady of the lake and Mary Bird perkins have a long-standing tradition of providing the very best in cancer care to the Baton Rouge community. this prestigious selection validates the high quality of our care and the excellence of our physicians. It also means we are on the frontlines of setting the standards for care excellence benefiting thousands of cancer patients across our nation,” said Robert Davidge, former Ceo, our lady of the lake Regional Medical Center.

The official NCCCP launch was held at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. Two-Time Cancer Survivor Pledges Early Detection Partnershipthe first time Jerry Goss was diagnosed with cancer was in 1992. He was 43 years old with a wife, four young children and an investment career on the fast track with A.G. edwards & Sons, Inc. in Baton Rouge. non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma was not a part of his business plan.

Goss says he had heard of Mary Bird perkins but admittedly was not all that familiar with it. up until that point, he had no reason to be. A mass in his chest the size of a tennis ball changed that. His oncologist recommended that he receive his radiation treatment at Mary Bird perkins. Goss took his doctor’s advice.

nine months of chemotherapy and three months of radiation might have had some people down for the count, but according to Jerry’s wife Devera, a former nurse in the intensive care unit of our lady of the lake, “Jerry was such a fighter. He is not one to lie down and give up. He just cut back his 60-hour work weeks for a while.”

“While I was going through my radiation treatments under the care of Dr. Sheldon Johnson,” said Goss, “I learned that Mary Bird perkins treats all community members regardless of ability to pay. that totally piqued my interest. When I recovered, Devera and I joined the Karnival Krewe de louisiane, a Mardi Gras ball that, at the time, raised funds for Mary Bird perkins’ indigent patient care fund. Also, my good friend Bill peters

Jerry and Devera Goss were both inspired and impressed by MBP’s numerous outreach partnerships serving a 15-parish service area.

was very involved with Mary Bird perkins and encouraged me to take an active part in fundraising activities, which I did. Since that time Devera and I have increased our involvement with, and our commitment to, Mary Bird perkins Cancer Center.”

then in 2001 cancer struck again. this time it was testicular cancer. Goss came out a winner again.

“Jerry’s life was saved because his cancer was detected early,” said his wife. “It made him want to help provide early detection screenings for those who don’t have equal access to this life-saving service.”

“I learned that Louisiana doesn’t really have a higher incidence of cancer than any other state in the country. What we have is a higher mortality rate. Because people lack access to routine cancer screenings, or don’t understand the concept of ‘wellness exams,’ their cancers go undetected and untreated.”

Jerry Goss

Goss is determined to help change that. He has pledged $100,000 to cancer early detection outreach, payable over the next four years.

“I’ve always believed in giving a percentage of my income to charities and Christian missionary work,” he said. “the last ten years I’ve been trying to give more to the community. Mary Bird perkins Cancer Center helps such a large segment of the community, including those without health

insurance. that’s very impressive to me. It gave me the inclination to help.”

How does one pass this type of message along to one’s children? “You have to show them to have compassion. We’ve discussed with our children that as you prosper you ought to give a portion of your income back to those with needs. We’ve done that throughout our 27 years of marriage,” said Jerry Goss.

“time is valuable, too. perhaps you can provide a service to someone who has a need and later give financially as well. our children have been involved with several giving back activities – page with Special olympics and Downtown Development (BRAeDA); Matt and Alex with several Katrina relief efforts; and Jerry’s daughter Amanda has been on an outreach trip to Africa.”

“It’s a biblical principle to give back your first fruits,” explained Jerry. “I advocate that you give a percentage to charities, save a percentage for yourself and then live off the rest. You can get by on less than 100% of what you make. You’d be surprised.”

Jerry and Devera Goss are Rathbone Society donors to the MBp Annual Giving Campaign and members of Anna B. lipsey legacy Builders. Jerry Goss is a member of the MBp Foundation planned Giving Council and was recently invited to join the MBp Foundation board.

n the two-part smoking cessation program launched in 2006 continued to meet the needs of the Baton Rouge, Covington and Hammond communities. the program included smoking cessation classes for the community and education programs for health care professionals to equip them with the tools they need to help patients quit. Smoking cessation classes for the community resulted in a 57.8 percent quit rate for the participants.

researCh

n Mary Bird perkins has a nationally competitive medical physics program though its academic and research partnership with louisiana State university. the program recently established the Dr. Charles M. Smith Chair of Medical physics at lSu and became the 11th in the united States to achieve national higher-education accreditation status.

n Mary Bird perkins patients have access to dozens of clinical research protocols at any one time including local, regional and national trials.

n Mary Bird perkins houses and supports the Baton Rouge Regional tumor Registry, one of eight regional registries comprising the louisiana tumor Registry. the louisiana tumor Registry reports newly diagnosed cancer cases to assist in health care decision making and formation of public policy. It was selected to join the prestigious SeeR program of the national Cancer Institute.

n In 2007, the Cancer Registry departments of Mary Bird perkins and our lady of the lake streamlined operations to serve as one operational department. the integrated cancer registry, part of the Cancer program of our lady of the lake and Mary Bird perkins, will allow for more accurate and complete data to be recorded in the registry database and ultimately reported to the louisiana tumor Registry.

early deteCtion

n 4,491 people were screened at 154 free cancer screenings, including screenings for breast, colorectal, prostate and skin cancer. Screenings were held in Baton Rouge, Covington, Gonzales, Hammond and surrounding areas. A total of 25 cancers were diagnosed. through 2007, 20,589 people have been screened.

"My commitment to Mary Bird Perkins comes from two very heart-felt places. One is that my wife Terri and I both each lost a parent to this disease at very young ages. The other is that we see the important need to greatly expand the reach of cancer prevention, early detection and treatment to those least likely to have access to these life-saving measures to help make our community a better place to live for all of us."

Northshore Survivor Makes Plans for Mary Bird Perkins in His Will sAys MBp gives hOpe When Ron ness, the oldest of eight children, was born prematurely in his grandmother’s house in Minnesota, word has it the doctor said “he wouldn’t give a plug nickel for his life.” that was 63 years ago.

today ness holds an engineering degree from lSu, an MBA he earned while working as a civil engineer at Chevron and a law degree from loyola university where he became a full-time student at age 40, graduating with the class of 1992. ness said he found engineering too confining and moved into sales and marketing in the oil industry, a role that had him spending so much time with attorneys that he decided to become one.

It was during his time at Chevron that ness met his future wife Corinne Helm of new Roads, lA; also an lSu graduate and an audiologist at ochsner Hospital. the two had mutual friends in new orleans and Ron ultimately went into business with some of them in a start-up company called Matrix oil & Gas, buying oil

But We Need To Do More.

With your support, we can make sure services and new advances in cancer care are available for you, your children and your grandchildren through Mary Bird perkins Cancer Center Foundation. our mission is simple: build an endowment to fight cancer. this will ensure that patients and families have access to all the services they need - now and in the future - and that valuable cancer research continues.

Together, Ron and Corrine Ness decided to become partners in the fight against cancer by naming MBP as a beneficiary in their will.

and gas properties and growing the company. ten years later, Matrix was sold. Several of the partners joined together to create tammany oil & Gas, the company ness is associated with today.

one morning while shaving to go to work, ness noticed a lump on the right side of his neck. A consultation with his primary care doctor and ent led to a needle biopsy. the results proved positive for cancer. the chief surgeon at ochsner removed the lump and found the primary cancer site to be the right tonsil, also removed. He then suggested ness see Dr. Greg Henkelmann at Mary Bird perkins Cancer Center in Covington to discuss the radiation therapy component of his treatment. “We had already heard about Dr. Henkelmann from neighbors,” said ness. “When the surgeon recommended him too, it made it a lot easier.”

ness said it was at that meeting in Covington two weeks after his surgery that his appreciation of Mary Bird perkins began.

“So many different sources said the doctors at Mary Bird Perkins in Covington were the right people. Once you sit down with them, you know you’ve made the right decision.”

Ron ness

“Mary Bird perkins is a community resource I can’t say enough about. It’s local, they have the expertise, they’re professional and they provide an invaluable service to the people who live here. there is no compelling reason to go out of state for cancer care. Mary Bird perkins fills a big gap in cancer treatment on the northshore.

“Really, the worst part for me was the mask I had to wear to keep my head in position for every treatment. It made me claustrophobic. Dr. Henkelmann came up with the idea to help relieve my anxiety by making some adjustments to my mask. But what helped me most were the radiation therapists. My treatments were 25 minutes long, five days a week for six weeks. When you’re called into that room, you’re in there all alone. Jackie and pam would call in over the speaker to tell me I ‘was 2/3 through’, or ‘almost finished’ or to ‘just hang on for a few more minutes.’ I became so close to those people. they pull you through and are always ready with a smile. It is such a team effort.”

When asked if she accompanied Ron to his treatments, Corinne said, “He went before work and I went to church and prayed.” She said she could tell how attached he had grown to these people because halfway through he wanted to bring a nice box of desserts. She said he did the same thing when his treatments ended.

“there are a lot of worthy organizations that deserve support, and the number of people in need will only increase as the population increases,” said ness. “But when Corinne and I talked about including charitable beneficiaries in our will, Mary Bird perkins jumped to the top. It’s one of three organizations we plan to remember in our will. the northshore can’t afford to lose Mary Bird perkins.

“I thank the doctors over there every day. Mary Bird perkins gives everyone hope. It gives you a chance to be a survivor.”
