“While lung cancer kills more women than any other kind of cancer, breast cancer is the most prevalent.”

POP QUIZ TIME. What color ribbon is associated with October? Answer: Pink. What cause is the pink ribbon associated with? Answer: Breast Cancer Awareness.

Breast cancer awareness, through the pink ribbon campaign, is one of the best recognized health campaigns among the numerous disease prevention projects. The Susan Komen Foundation and other breast cancer research organizations have effectively raised public consciousness about the prevalence and risks of breast cancer using all things pink. But why should young women concern themselves with a disease that mainly affects older women? What signifi cance might “breast cancer awareness month” take with college aged students? Answer: plenty.

Health conscious students already realize that, in women, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in the U.S. The American Cancer Society estimates that one out of eight women in the United States will get breast cancer at some point in their lifetime. While lung cancer kills more women than any other kind of cancer, breast cancer is the most prevalent. College women are at the perfect age to adopt practices that support breast health.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) recommends three strategies for early detection of breast cancer: self exam, clinical exam and mammogram. By the age of 20, all women should perform breast self exams monthly. Information on how to effectively conduct self breast exams is available at University Health Center and at the Health Resource Center in the EMU. By the age of 20, women should also have a clinical breast exam every three

years and then every year after the age of 40. These exams are similar to a self exam but are performed by your medical provider and are more thorough. University Health Center physicians and nurse practitioners provide breast exams and can answer questions you may have about breast health and cancer risk. The third strategy for early detection is mammography. It is recommended by the ACS that women after age 40 have a mammogram annually.

Best estimates claim that approximately half of the cases of breast cancer are due to risk factors that are preventable. Women of any age can take an active role in preventing breast cancer by integrating healthy practices. Regular exercise, maintaining ideal weight, eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes, and limiting fat intake can go a long way in preventing many types of chronic disease. Avoiding tobacco and consuming alcohol in moderation (that’s less than one drink/day for women) can also help reduce the risk of breast cancer. For a terrifi c interactive video on breast health and cancer entitled “Anatomy of Breast Cancer-Updated” check out the Susan Komen Foundation website at http://www.komen.org. To make an appointment with a medical practitioner at the University Health Center, call 346-2770. Stop by the Health Resource Center in the EMU for general information on cancer and disease prevention. It takes more than pink ribbons to help prevent breast cancer, but getting out the pink in October is a fi ne start. ◆
