The South Dakota State University men’s swimming anddiving team returns most of its swimmers from last seasonand looks to improve on a fifth-place finish at the Mid-Continent Conference Championships.

One of the three team captains is junior Mark Garrigues,who was an all-conference honoree in the pool and in theclassroom. After setting five season bests at the Mid-ConChampionships, Garrigues will be back to concentrate onfreestyle and individual medley events.

Another captain is Cade Roberts, who will primarily swimthe breaststroke. Roberts finished the season by placing thirdin the 200-yard breaststroke and fourth in the 100 breast-stroke.

The third captain is senior Hadleigh Tyler, who was a part ofthe 200 medley relay team that broke a school record andfinished fourth at the Mid-Con Championships.Tyler is asprinter who will focus on the freestyle and the 100 butterflyevents.

Other swimmers to watch for, according to head coach BradErickson, are freshmen Andrew Arens and Andrew Martin.Erickson said that Martin “has shown very good promise” infall practice. He will compete in the distance freestyle, whichallows junior Josh Mueller to concentrate on butterfly. Arenswill be a utility man competing in a wide variety of events asneeded. In high school, Arens was part of a team that won theColorado Class 5A team title.

Another freshman who is expected to produce this season isPatrick Heyen from Lincoln, Neb., who will be the first men’sdiver on the Jackrabbit squad in quite some time. Heyen wasone of the top high school divers in Nebraska finishing third inthe 1-meter diving competition at the state meet as a juniorand placing second as a senior.

Also returning are Chris Holzwarth and Matt Josephson, whowere both part of SDSU’s record-setting 400 medley relay

team that placed second at the conference meet. Holzwarthalso swam on the 400 freestyle relay team that set a schoolrecord and placed sixth individually in the 400 individualmedley.

An associate member of the Mid-Continent Conference thelast two seasons, SDSU is now a full member of the newlynamed Summit League. In the preseason coaches’ poll, theJackrabbits were picked to finish in a tie for fifth place withIUPUI — matching their fifth-place effort at the conferencemeet last season.

The goal for this season is to move up a spot in the confer-ence standings and to continue to improve on last season’sfinish.

“The further we get into this transition to Division I, themore appealing it is for recruits to look at us,” Erickson said.

Besides making strides in the pool, SDSU had six swimmers— Garrigues, Justin Manning, Kyle Milleman, Brad Peters,Roberts, and Chad Thomsen — recognized by the Mid-Con asmembers of the academic all-conference team last season.

To prepare for the 2007-08 season, the Jackrabbits havebeen lifting weights three times a week along with time in thepool. As the season opener Oct. 26 against the University ofSouth Dakota gets closer, lifting has been cut to two days aweek and two-a-day swimming practice has started.

The Jackrabbit men’s schedule also includes competition atthe Minnesota Invitational, where they placed ninth as a teamlast year. The Jackrabbits will also face some of the samecompetitors from years past, including the University ofWisconsin-Green Bay and St. Louis (Mo). The men will finishthe season in Rochester, Mich., at the Summit LeagueChampionships Feb. 21-23.

Erickson is entering his 32nd season as the head coach ofthe swimming and diving teams for SDSU.

••SSDDSSUUSSDDSSUU SSwwiimmmmiinngg && DDiivviinngg PPrreevviieeww••22000077--0088 PPrreevviieewwSDSU’s women’s swimming and diving team is young, but still

has enough experience to be one of the top teams in the SummitLeague this season.

With 19 of the 24 women on the roster either freshmen or soph-omores, senior Chelsea Colborn and junior Mallory Onisk will becounted on to be leaders because of their experience. Onisk has hername on eight school records while Colborn is the only senior onthis year’s team.

Coach Brad Erickson said that even though the team is young,having a year more of experience should pay off at the end of theseason.

“Having more experience with college life and balancing the aca-demic and athletic side will make a difference this year,” Ericksonsaid.

Sophomore Emily Tschetter is back and will try to continue herassault on the record books. During her freshman season,Tschetterset school records in the 100-yard breaststroke, 200 breaststroke,and 400 individual medley, all of which were at the Mid-ContinentConference Championships.

Both the men’s and women’s teams have started two-a-day prac-tices three times a week recently along with reducing the days inthe weight room from three to two.They have split the practices intospecialized groups working on the swimmers’ events instead of agroup practice.

Sophomore Christina Gerometta has shown improvement and ishaving a “fantastic” fall practice so far, according to Erickson.

The Jackrabbits have set 18 school records the last two seasons,including a memorable second-place finish in the 400 medley relayat last season’s Mid-Con Championships.Tschetter, Onisk and soph-omore Rachel Musser all return from that team.

Erickson doesn’t know how long the team can keep up thatrecord-setting pace, but with good athletes coming in every yearrecords should continue to fall.

Newcomers who are expected to contribute this season includeCassie Kozar, a backstroker from British Columbia, Canada, andAlexandra Hoffman, a transfer from Minnesota, who will primarilycompete in the 100 and 200 backstroke, where she could be nearthe top in conference. Alaskan freshmen Amanda Jones and JuliaDicostanzo will also be looked at to make an early impact. Jones

will be one of the best on the team in the freestyle and but-terfly, while Dicostanzo is a sprinter who broke the staterecord in the 200 medley last season. April Peterson fromThief River Falls, Minn., is also strong in individual medleysand lettered six times in high school.

Two other swimmers who will be important additions tothe team will be freshmen Jennifer Daniels and RebeccaHempel.

Sasha Porter will be the only diver on the women’s teamthis season. Graduate assistant Amy Bouy, who was anational qualifier in college at Nebraska, will coach thedivers, giving them more one-on-one teaching. This allowsErickson to have more time to coach the swimmers andallows the divers to be coached by a former diver to perfecttheir technique. Erickson expects some diving records thathave been standing for many decades to fall this year.

The schedule is challenging since there is only one homemeet — Oct. 27 versus Iowa State.The travel schedule doestake a toll, but the younger swimmers now know what toexpect and how to handle the travel throughout the year,Erickson said.

In competition, the Jackrabbits will be headed back to theMinnesota Challenge, which will focus on individual swim-ming times, as well as the Husker Invitational.The Jacks willalso be facing some of the same dual opponents as in previ-ous seasons, including Northern Colorado, Northern Iowa,Nebraska, St. Louis University, and Wisconsin-Green Bay.

The SDSU women’s swimming and diving team will finishthe season in Rochester, Mich., at the Summit LeagueChampionships Feb. 21-23.

With a record enrollment of 11,706 students in the fall of 2007, South DakotaState University is the state’s largest institutionof higher education.

Today, students from all 50 states and morethan 40 countries attend SDSU.

More than 67,000 degrees have beengranted since the college was chartered in1881.EARLY HISTORY

Located in Brookings, SDSU was authorizedin 1881 by the Territorial Legislative Assemblyand serves as the state’s land-grant institu-tion.Territorial Council member John O’BrienScobey, failing to obtain the penitentiary forBrookings, managed to secure DakotaAgricultural College for his city.

Although allocations fell short of the actual cost, the school was able to open in thefall of 1884 because the president, GeorgeLilley, was willing to advance $500 — one-third of his salary — to finish three rooms inthe new Central Building.COLLEGES ESTABLISHED

The structure of the college became morecomplex as enrollments increased.The firstnine chairs of instruction established in 1884included agriculture, science, mathematics,English, modern languages, military tactics,veterinary science, practical business, politicaland domestic economy, and music.

By 1907, the year the name of the institu-tion was changed to South Dakota StateCollege of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts,there were 22 departments on campus.

In 1964, when “State College” wasrenamed South Dakota State University, there

were six colleges; today degrees are offeredthrough these eight colleges:

• Agricultural and Biological Sciences• Arts and Science• Education and Counseling• Engineering• Family and Consumer Sciences• General Registration• Nursing• Pharmacy• Graduate SchoolSDSU also offers degree programs through

the University Center in Sioux Falls. Evening,RDTN, Internet and off-campus courses are

coordinated through the Office of AcademicAffairs and Outreach.SDSU BY THE NUMBERS

In its 126-year history, South Dakota Statehas grown from a campus of 80 acres in 1881to a 422-acre campus with facilities worthmore than $380 million.

The University owns or leases another15,000 acres for research throughout thestate.

A University Student Union expansion andrenovation project was completed in the summer of 2005, as was Caldwell Hall, asuite-style residence hall.

Other recent building projects have includ-ed:

• Anson and Ada May Yeager Hall (formerlythe Printing and Journalism Building), whichunderwent a $2.1 million expansion and renovation project;

• Crothers Engineering Hall — $7 millionexpansion;

• Solberg Hall — multi-million dollar reno-vation;

• Performing Arts Center — $9 millionproject completed in fall of 2002.

In addition, the Enterprise Institute building,which also houses the SDSU Foundation, wascompleted in the fall of 2004.The EnterpriseInstitute is designed to facilitate SDSU andindustry resources to encourage and assist the

establishment of entrepreneurial growth enter-prises in the region.

Several other building projects are underway or in the planning stages, including:

• A $48 million, 144,000-square-footIntegrated Sciences Complex;

• Harding Hall South, a 30,000-square-footbuilding that will house an expansion withinthe College of Engineering;

• A $3.6 million equestrian center; and• A $12 million campus wellness center.More than 200 majors, minors and options

(see listing on pages 33-34) are available atSDSU with more than 2,500 different courseofferings.

Master’s degrees are offered in more than30 areas and doctorates are available in eightfields.

SDSU is accredited by the North CentralAssociation of Colleges and Secondary Schoolsand numerous departments on campus haveearned accreditation from various agencies.

More than 2,000 people are employees ofSDSU, and the University’s total operatingbudget was more than $195 million in FiscalYear 2007.

Supplementing classroom instruction are theHarding Distinguished Lecture Series, the F.O.Butler Lectures, the Lusk Lecture and theAmdahl, Schultz-Werth and Griffiths endow-ments.

Students also have the opportunity tochoose from more than 200 clubs and organi-zations active on campus.RESEARCH

SDSU has the highest percentage of under-graduates involved in research of any SouthDakota public university. SDSU is large enoughto offer competitive research opportunities, yetsmall enough to foster student-faculty learningopportunities.

In 2006, SDSU was recognized by theCarnegie Foundation for the Advancement ofTeaching as the state’s only RU/H (researchuniversity/high research activity) institution.This prestigious ranking recognizes the growthof doctoral programs, degrees granted andcompetitive funds obtained.

Major areas of research at SDSU include:• Engineering and technology research into

photovoltaic devices, nanotechnology, materialsscience, wind power, surface transportation sys-tems, signal and image processing, water treat-ment, computer sciences, software engineeringand computational science and statistics.

• Agricultural sciences research on crops,livestock and the spectrum of related issues,such as agricultural biotechnology, infectiousdiseases (animal and zoonotic), food manufac-turing, bio-based energy and products, eco-nomics and horticulture.

• Management and conservation of naturalresources, with research on soil and waterquality, soil fertility, conservation farming prac-tices, wildlife and fisheries, climate change,landscape ecology and livestock waste.

• Health sciences, nutritional sciences andwellness research programs in pharmaceuticalsciences, nutrition and exercise physiology,muscle-bone relationships, cancer prevention,nursing and infectious disesases.

• Renewable energy research is developingbio-based energy technologies, while promot-ing diversification and environmental sustain-ability of America’s agriculture.

SDSU has been selected as one of five uni-versities to serve as a regional center for theSun Grant Initiative.The Sun Grant Initiative isa concept to solve America’s energy needs andrevitalize rural communities with Land-Grantuniversity research, education and Extensionprograms on renewable energy and bio-basednon-food industries.The Sun Grant Initiativewill involve several SDSU departments, includ-ing mechanical engineering, biology andmicrobiology, the Geographic InformationScience Center of Excellence, nutrition andfood sciences, chemistry and plant science.

• The Economics Department is studying theeconomic impact of ethanol development onthe state’s economy and the logistics of usingbiomass for producing renewable fuels.

• Over the next five years, $69 million infederal funds is to be awarded to SDSU andsix other universities to serve as Vanguard cen-ters for the National Children’s Study.The NCSwill study more than 100,000 children acrossthe country from conception to age 21.

As part of the Governor’s 2010 Initiative, agoal is for South Dakota to become a recog-nized leader in research and technology devel-opment.To realize this goal, SDSU faculty areinvolved in five research centers:

• Center for Infectious Disease Researchand Vaccinology

An agreement between SDSU and ArgonneNational Laboratory will develop opportunitiesfor SDSU faculty and students working in part-nership to pursue fields of science thatadvance science and technology-driven eco-nomic development in South Dakota.MUSEUMS AND ATTRACTIONS

The educational opportunities don’t end inthe classroom or laboratory as South DakotaState University is home to several facilities,including museums and gardens, which high-light South Dakota history and heritage.

The South Dakota Art Museum houses sev-eral collections, including early Sioux Indiantribal art, the famed Harvey Dunn paintings ofpioneer life and the exclusive Vera WayMarghab linens.

The State Agricultural Heritage Museumtransformed the former Stock Judging Pavilioninto a home for exhibits that record and pre-serve the agrarian heritage of South Dakota.

The 70-acre McCrory Gardens and SouthDakota Arboretum, located south and east ofcampus, provide a beautiful setting for arearesidents and tourists to enjoy a stroll through

the radiant colors and fragrances of one of thetop 10 small ornamental gardens in thenation. It is also recognized as an All-AmericanDisplay Garden, one of only 13 in the nation.

In 1993, McCrory Gardens was designatedan All-American Judging Garden to conductresearch on annual flowers.

In 1982, the area north of the formal gar-den was dedicated to the planting and testingof ornamental trees and shrubs.The 45-acresite was designated the South Dakota StateArboretum in 1988.

Perhaps South Dakota State’s most recognizable landmark is the 165-footCoughlin Campanile, the state’s largestchimes tower. A climb of 179 steps leads to apanoramic view of the city.

The statuesque structure on the west end ofcampus was a $65,000 gift from 1909 engi-neering graduate Charles Coughlin, who laterwent on to become head of the Briggs &Stratton Corporation.

Coughlin laid the campanile’s cornerstone onJune 10, 1929. Since then, its chimes havecalled students to classes with the famousWestminster peals.

An alumni-sponsored project to restore thecampanile was completed in the summer of2001.

Adjacent to the campanile, Coolidge-SylvanTheatre has provided a restful, green haven forstudents since its dedication by PresidentCalvin Coolidge in September 1927.

Over the years the outdoor amphiteater hasbeen the site of concerts, graduations andinaugurations for university presidents.

Woodbine Cottage, the home of the universi-ty president, is a charming example of QueenAnne architecture. Built in 1887 by SouthDakota Agricultural College’s second president,Dr. Lewis McLouth, the home is crowned bymultiple roof lines.

The house also has served as a women’sdormitory, music hall and infirmary.STATE’S LARGEST LIBRARY

The Hilton M. Briggs Library, the state’slargest, was opened in 1977 and joined SouthDakota’s statewide automated library networkin 1988.Through the library, users haveaccess to holdings from all 10 of the state’slibraries, including official documents andmore than 1 million other holdings at Briggs.THE BROOKINGS COMMUNITY

Today, Brookings is a growing community ofabout 18,700 people. Located 20 miles westof the Minnesota border and 50 miles north ofSioux Falls in east-central South Dakota,Brookings is situated at the intersection of U.S.Highway 14 and Interstate 29.

The community also is home to several rec-ognizable companies including Rainbow PlaySystems, Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing(3M), Larson Manufacturing, and Daktronics, aleading manufacturer of scoreboards and dis-play systems.
